02:46On June 11, 2016, Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, was hosting Latin Night, a weekly
03:06Saturday night event drawing a primarily Latino crowd.
03:13RuPaul's Drag Race contestant and drag queen, Kenya Michaels, is recorded to have been performing
03:21right as the shooting began.
03:23Michaels survived the shooting.
03:28About 320 people were still inside the club, which was serving last-call drinks at around
03:352 a.m. EDT on June 12.
03:42At around the same time, Omar Mateen arrived at the club via rental van, parking it in
03:49the parking lot of a neighboring car shop.
03:53He got out and walked toward the building armed with a Sig Sauer MCX semi-automatic rifle and
04:019mm Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol.
04:07He was wearing a green, blue, and white plaid dress shirt, a white t-shirt underneath, and
04:13tan cargo pants.
04:15At 2 a.m.
04:17At 2 a.m., Mateen bypassed Officer Adam Grueler, a uniformed, off-duty Orlando Police Department
04:25officer working extra duty as a security guard, entered the building through its southern entrance
04:33and began shooting patrons.
04:39Dozens were killed or severely injured inside the crowded nightclub, either directly or by
04:46ricochets.
04:51Grueler took cover and called in a signal for assistance.
04:57He told a post-incident police foundation assessment team that he had immediately recognized that
05:04his handgun would be severely disadvantaged against the rifle Mateen was using.
05:11When he witnessed Mateen shooting two patrons attempting to escape through an emergency exit,
05:18Grueler fired shots at him.
05:21In response, Mateen withdrew back into the nightclub and continued shooting victims as
05:28he traversed through the building, sometimes firing into bodies without checking whether
05:34they were already dead.
05:43When additional officers arrived at the nightclub beginning at 2 a.m., Grueler shouted, the gunman's
05:50hands in the patio, and resumed firing at Mateen a minute later.
05:56Two officers joined Grueler in engaging Mateen, who then retreated farther into the nightclub
06:04and, quote, began a hostage situation, unquote, in one of the bathrooms.
06:13In less than five minutes, Mateen had fired approximately 200 rounds, pausing only to reload.
06:19Oh, my God, people are getting shot, dude.
06:26Oh, my God, dude.
06:28You guys firing off shots.
06:30Oh.
06:31Oh, my God.
06:32Oh, my God.

08:45body after body
08:50Guys! Run, Jordan! Get out this door!
09:20Guys, I'm shooting more people in there.
09:48Guys!
10:18Right out there, I'll see you.
10:25Guys, I'm shooting more people in there.
10:35Guys, I'm shooting more people in there.
10:40After the shooting, some of the people trapped inside the club sought help by calling or sending text messages to friends and relatives.
10:51Initially, some of them thought the gunshots were firecrackers or part of the music.
10:57Imran Youssef, a recently discharged Marine Corps veteran working as a nightclub bouncer, immediately recognized the sounds as gunfire, which he described as high caliber, and jumped over a locked door behind which dozens of people were hidden and paralyzed by fear.
11:17Then opened a latched door behind them, allowing approximately 70 people to escape.
11:24Many described a scene of panic and confusion caused by the loud music and darkness.
11:32One person shielded herself by hiding inside a bathroom and covering herself with bodies.
11:49A bartender said she took cover beneath the glass bar.
11:56At least one patron tried to help those who were hit.
12:00This grainy cell phone video captures the horror from inside the women's bathroom as Omar Mateen went on a shooting rampage nearby.
12:12It was recorded while more than a dozen people squeezed into one stall, some of them already shy, sharing a glass of water, trying to keep each other calm and quiet so they would not be heard by the gunmen.
12:25Miguel Leyva filmed this video.
12:27We had to be quiet because everybody whose phone was ringing and any noise he heard, he was going in that direction and just shooting people and killing them.
12:34They huddled for three hours, refusing Mateen's orders to step out.
12:39It was really hot in there. The smell of blood and just dead bodies everywhere.
12:45According to a man trapped inside a bathroom with 15 other patrons, Mateen fired 16 times into a bathroom.
12:55Through the closed door, killing at least two and wounding several others.
13:02According to one of the hostages, Mateen entered a bathroom in the nightclub's northwest side and opened fire on the people hiding there, wounding several.
13:14The hostage, who had taken cover inside a stall with others, was injured by two bullets and struck with flying pieces of a wall hit by stray bullets.
13:29Shortly after entering the women's restroom, Mateen's rifle jammed.
13:33He then discarded the rifle and switched to his Glock 17 pistol.
13:40Two survivors quoted Mateen as saying, I don't have a problem with black people.
13:45And after that, he even spoke to us directly in the bathroom.
13:52He said, are there any black people in here?
13:55I was too afraid to answer.
13:57But there was an African-American male in this stall where most of my body was, majority of my body was, had answered.
14:04And he said, yes, there are about six or seven of us.
14:07And the gunman responded back to him saying that, you know, I don't have a problem with black people.
14:12This is about my country.
14:16How many people are with you?
14:21And that he, quote, wouldn't stop his assault until America stopped bombing his country.
14:27It was a wide ranging speech about U.S. counterterrorism policy in which he also addressed the legality of drone strikes and the controversy surrounding them.
14:37America's actions are legal.
14:39So this is a just war.
14:44Well, I mean, look, if the U.S. claims that these are not illegal, unlawful strikes, give us the evidence.
14:49Give us the legal explanation for how you justify killing a grandmother in front of her grandchildren.
14:54How do you explain killing a young 14-year-old boy who himself in such a poor village had to be a laborer in a mine at that age?
15:02How do you explain those killings?
15:03Jeremy, when U.S. troops kill civilians, presumably accidentally in Afghanistan or Iraq,
15:10there's a process under which these individuals can be compensated to a degree.
15:15I think one of the points that is being made here is because the justification for these drone strikes is kept top secret,
15:21there's no way for these people to seek any sort of redress for their grievance.
15:26Let me see your hands now!
15:33Let me see your hands!
15:34Come out with your hands, brother, you will talk!
15:36He doesn't have gloves, so we can check this one's pulse.
15:38Did anybody check this one?
15:39No.
15:40No.
15:41Go up, go up!
15:44I've got no pulse.
15:45Alright.
15:46Good try, bro!
15:48Oh my God!
15:49We're here!
15:50Don't get down!
15:51Oh my...
15:52Mike's it!
15:53Mike's it!
15:54That's it, brother!
15:55It's terrorism in Orlando.
15:56Huh?
15:57Terrorism in Orlando.
15:58Pledges something to the Islamic State.
16:00Deputies working the incident, or officers working the incident, okay?
16:03I have to answer other calls, but keep the phone with you,
16:06stay where you are if you feel safe there, okay?
16:09No, he's gonna kill us.
16:11Alright, I'm with somebody who's texting,
16:13with someone in the bathroom.
16:14The suspect is advised he's gonna attach four vests to 15,
16:19or to four people in 15 to 20 minutes,
16:22um, in the different, uh, directionals of the close.
16:29I wanna let you know I'm in Orlando,
16:32and I did the shooting.
16:34Tell me what's going on right now, Omar.
16:37What's going on is that the airstrikes need to stop.
16:43Yeah.
16:44And then based on his conversations,
16:46uh, pretty quickly he realized that we were dealing with someone
16:49who is self-radicalized, uh, and a terrorist.
16:53Hi there, this is Orlando Police.
16:55Who am I speaking with, please?
16:57You're speaking with the person who placed his allegiance
17:00to the Islamic State.
17:01I do think I was like a daddy.
17:02I can hold you up.
17:03Okay.
17:04Um, can you tell me where you are right now,
17:07so I can get you some help?
17:09No.
17:10Because you have to tell America to stop bombing Syria and Iraq.
17:15They're killing a lot of innocent people.
17:18So what am I to do here when my people are getting killed over there?
17:22You get what I'm saying?
17:23I do.
17:24I completely get what you're saying.
17:25What I'm trying to do is prevent anybody else from getting in.
17:27So we need to stop the U.S. airstrikes.
17:30Other survivors heard Martin claim he had explosives,
17:35as well as snipers stationed around the club.
17:39Patrons trapped inside called or texted 911
17:44to warn of the possible presence of explosives.
17:48So we need to help the U.S. airstrikes.
17:49Just one to quench.
17:51Take him out of the window!
17:54Come here!
17:55Put the fucking window!
17:570-41, Duke.
17:58Use the district to find me a state and area.

19:08Aning School out in the right they hide.
19:09Boop!
19:10Hey!
19:11Over the next 45 minutes, about 100 officers from the OPD
19:30in the Orange County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene.
19:35Among the earliest first responders to arrive were a firefighter crew
19:39from Fire Station 5 and two supporting firefighter paramedics from Fire Station 7.
19:4680 fire and emergency medical services personnel from the Orlando Fire Department
19:52were deployed during the shooting.
19:56At 2.09 a.m., several minutes after the gunfire began,
20:00the club posted on its Facebook page,
20:03Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running!
20:05At 2.22 a.m., Mateen placed a 911 call,
20:12during which he mentioned the Boston Marathon Bombers.

21:13Oh, you are so dumb.
21:15You are really dumb.
21:16Korea.
21:18The man got away leaving behind evidence.
21:20I was attacked by some idiot in the project.
21:23It made a reference to Moner Mohamed Abu Salha, an American citizen who died in a suicide
21:32bombing in Syria in 2014.
21:42I made my angel with only $20 in my pocket.
21:46$20 in my pocket.
21:47Only enough to buy a visa to come inside Istanbul.
21:59From there, I had no money.
22:02I didn't have nobody to even help me to get to Syria.
22:06I came to Istanbul looking for the Mujahideen.
22:08Because it's very hard for where I come from.
22:12I want all the ikhwah to understand this and listen to my story.
22:17How can you say this is a suicide?
22:19There's nothing but suicide.
22:21But when the kafir kills himself because he's in grief of the dunya that he's in,
22:29he says, may Allah have mercy on his soul.
22:32Astaghfirullah.
22:34How can you say to this kafir, may Allah have mercy on his soul.
22:37But when the Mujahideen exposes himself for the sake of Allah's logic,
22:40they take out the kufa.
22:41Islam is Islam on the day.
22:43You live this banner of Islam on the day.
22:44You say this is a suicide?
22:45How dare you?
22:46And you will see who are the true successors on the yom al-qayyama.
22:54I love you, mom.
22:59Stay strong for Allah.
23:02Everything I have told you about Jannah.
23:05Shahada.
23:07Shahada.
23:08Matin said he was inspired by Abu Salha's death for the al-Nusra front,
23:19targeting Syrian government troops,
23:22a mutual enemy of the two Salafist groups,
23:25despite their history of violence with each other,
23:28and swore allegiance to IS leader al-Baghdadi.
23:32The FBI said that Matin and Abu Salha had attended the same mosque
23:39and knew each other, quote, casually.
23:41You know, I was a casual acquaintance with this one guy.
23:45He used to go to the local...
23:47Masjidon.
23:47The mosque.
23:48This guy...
23:49Oh, mosque.
23:50He had season ticket seats next to me,
23:52and we were friendly enough,
23:54and I went over to his place once just to hang on.
23:58Could this get more awkward?
24:00Matin made two other 911 calls during the shooting.
24:04Numerous 911 calls were made by the patrons
24:09inside the nightclub around this time.
24:13After the initial rounds of gunfire between Matin and Grueler,
24:17six officers shot out a large glass window
24:20and followed the sound of shooting to the bathroom area.
24:24Come on.
24:25Come on.
24:25Come on.
24:26Come on.
24:26Come on.
24:26This bathroom's here.
24:28All over.
24:29Where do you need me?
24:30Just, uh, just hang out.
24:32Just hang out right here for now.
24:33Friendlies are coming in and out.
24:35Hey, you know there's an opening up there, right?
24:36We'll cover that.
24:37Yeah, don't worry.
24:38Do you have the one up there?
24:39Yes.
24:39We'll cover that.
24:40All right.
24:42When Matin stuck his head out from one of the bathrooms,
24:46at least two officers shot at him.
24:49After the gunfire stopped,
24:51they were ordered to hold position
24:53instead of storming the bathroom,
24:55according to one of the officers.
24:58After about 15 to 20 minutes,
25:00SWAT arrived
25:01and had the officers withdraw
25:03as the officers were, quote,
25:05not really in tactical gear.
25:08I'm running this monkey farm now, Frankenstein!
25:11SWAT then took over the operation.
25:15When asked why the officers didn't proceed
25:18to the bathroom and engage Matin,
25:22Orlando Police Chief John Mina
25:24said it was because Matin, quote,
25:27went from an active shooter
25:29to a barricaded gunman
25:31and had hostages.
25:34Now, where have I heard that one before?
25:37Thechemist's
25:41The
25:56This is crazy, this is crazy, this is crazy, this is crazy, this is crazy, this is crazy.
26:05No, they're in school shooting.
26:09I don't understand all these situations my dad taught me when I was a little girl.
26:18Just send help, one of my teachers left their whole life at their shop.
26:213-20, go ahead with that shop, information remain.
26:25So our child is advising, he is in the room full of victims, full of victims at this moment.
26:55He also noted, quote, if he had continued shooting, our officers would have went in there.
27:01Insert Uvalde's school shooting clip here.
27:05The room is full of victims.
27:08Following that call, 30 minutes passed before the shooter was killed, and six months later...
27:13He cowered out one more time.
27:15The family is still frustrated.
27:17Pargas hasn't shown his face as county commissioner since the shooting.
27:21I'm thinking I'm just talking to a chair.
27:23An empty chair with an empty person in there.
27:25Even if he was there, he was probably empty.
27:26To learn more details about the massacre in Orlando, many are asking why did it take police three hours to end the bloody siege?
27:34Christine Linenen lost her son in the shooting.
27:37I don't understand why the police took so long to get in there while our kids were in there.
27:44After the Columbine tragedy in 1999, law enforcement changed tactics, deciding shooters had to be taken down immediately rather than wait for SWAT teams to assemble.
27:55The last shot by Martine was fired between 2.10 a.m. and 2.18 a.m.
28:02Rescues of people trapped inside the nightclub commenced and continued throughout the night.
28:11Because so many people were lying on the dance floor, one rescuing officer demanded,
28:17If you're alive, raise your hand.
28:20By 2.35 a.m., police had managed to extract nearly all of the injured from the nightclub.
28:27Those who remained included the hostages held by Martine in the bathroom,
28:32as well as a dozen people who were hiding inside dressing rooms.
28:37What am I to do here when my people are getting killed over there? You get what I'm saying?
28:41Martine then tells the negotiator that there are cars outside with bombs inside them.
28:46Your people are going to get it, and I'm going to ignite it if they try to do anything stupid.
28:51Okay, I understand that, and I'll pass that along. Can you tell me what vehicle?
28:55Because I don't want to see anybody get hurt.
28:58No.
29:00But I'll tell you this, it can take out a whole city block for me.
29:05We just found an update and have more kinds of events run on.
29:13That bathroom to the left is cleared!
29:14We're on air unit update.
