03:59they intend uh to get their freedom and that the reason the whole situation is taking a turn towards

04:06violence because uh the government uh is not being responsive to uh the legitimate demands of black

04:16people jones attempted to negotiate for his commune to resettle in the soviet union in october 1978 feodor

04:25timofaev soviet consul to guyana visited jonestown for two days and gave a speech jim jones stated

04:34beforehand quote for many years after we've let our sympathies be quite publicly known that the united

04:41states government was not our mother but that the soviet union was our spiritual motherland

04:48timofaev declared jonestown in quote harmony of theory with marx angles lenin and the practical

04:55implementation of some fundamental features of this theory unquote and personally thanked jones

05:05that you made comments to others that you knew the next thing you knew that i was going to take all

05:10these tape recorders away from people i believe i wrote you a note that i know i didn't know no i

05:18hear no note i got a second hand which i didn't like that unless somebody took your note and didn't pass it

05:48fearful of a government raid on the commune concerned the community would not be able to resist an attack

05:56he began holding drills to test their readiness he called the drills white knights jones would call

06:04alert alert alert alert over the community loudspeaker to call the community together in the central

06:10pavilion armed guards with guns and crossbows surrounded the pavilion the community members

06:18would remain at the pavilion throughout the drill in which jones told them that their community had been

06:24surrounded by agents who were about to destroy them jones led them in prayers chanting and singing

06:32to ward off the impending attack sometimes he would have his guards hide in the forest and shoot their

06:39firearms to simulate an attack jones's terrified followers were only told they were participating in a

06:47drill when the event was over one drill in september 1977 lasted for six days known as the six day siege

06:58the ordeal was used thereafter by jones as a symbol of the community's indomitable spirit

07:05the drills served to keep the members of jonestown fearful of venturing outside of the commune

07:12following two visits by united states embassy personnel to check on the situation at jonestown

07:19and an irs investigation in early 1978 jones became increasingly convinced that the attack he feared

07:27was imminent in one 1978 white knight drill jones told his followers he was going to distribute poison for

07:36everyone to drink in an act of suicide a batch of fruit punch was served to everyone in the pavilion

07:44who sat by weeping and waiting for their death after some time passed jones informed his followers that

07:51it was only a drill and there was not any poison in their drink through the white knights jones convinced

07:59his followers that the cia was actively working to destroy their community and condition them to accept

08:05suicide as a means of escape on at least two occasions during white knights after a revolutionary

08:14suicide vote was reached a simulated mass suicide was rehearsed temple defector deborah layton described

08:23the event in an affidavit quote everyone including the children was told to line up as we passed through

08:31the line we were given a small glass of red liquid to drink we were told that the liquid contained poison

08:38and that we would die within 45 minutes we all did as we were told when the time came when we should

08:46have dropped dead reverend jones explained that the poison was not real and that we had just been

08:51through a loyalty test he warned us that the time was not far off when it would become necessary for us to

09:00die by our own hands so let him account where all those guns are that's his damn problem right

09:10i wanted i want the authorities to ask him where all the guns are what tim still do with all of our

11:43jonestown and sermons were played on a constant loop for the entire community to listen to jones

11:50began to propagate his belief in what he termed translation once his followers settled in jonestown

11:57claiming that he and his followers would all die and live blissfully together in the afterlife

12:04jones's orders were increasingly erratic he was seen staggering and urinating in public but this

12:11was due to prostatitis for a short time towards the end of jonestown he found it difficult to walk

12:18without assistance around this time but it cleared up by ryan's visit after learning that he might have

12:25a lung infection in 1978 jones told his followers that he actually had lung cancer in an effort to gain

12:33their compassion and increase their level of support jones was said to be abusing valium quaaludes stimulants and barbiturates

12:44audio recordings of meetings held in jonestown in 1978 attest to the commune leaders deteriorating health
