00:00These four people have never met before but by working as a team they have the
00:04chance to win thousands of pounds. There's just one thing standing in their
00:07way. The chase up. The chase is on.
00:19Hello and welcome to The Chase. Today's team of four total strangers believe they
00:23have what it takes to beat one of Britain's finest quiz brains and take
00:26home thousands of pounds. Let's meet the team. I'm Paul. I'm 40. I'm an emergency
00:32call operator from Lancashire. I'm Mark. I'm 47. I'm a charter surveyor from
00:36Worcestershire. I'm Maria. I'm 49. I'm an administration and training manager from
00:42Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I'm Robert. I'm 59. I'm a part-time
00:45copywriter from Surrey. So there's the team. Now one by one they'll bring as much
00:50money as they can down the table and into the team prize fund but hunting them
00:55down. Every step of the way as always is the chaser. Anyone who gets caught loses
00:59their money and is out of the game. Make it back safely though and they will go
01:02through to the final chase with a chance to win an equal share of that total prize
01:06fund. First to face the chaser it's Paul.

03:26frighten me. And I've got a King Charles Spaniel which frightens me more than Sean. Really? Yeah.
03:30Right. Let's find out. It's time to bring on the chaser.
03:38Oh. That's what you wanted. The governess. It's cuddly and hectic. Never heard a call back
03:45before. Hello Paul. Hi Anne. Elvis impersonator. I'm going to do my own Elvis cover. It's called
03:55In the Gatto. Right then. Let's put some money on the table Paul. There you go. There is
04:02your £4,000. If you want to take a step closer to home the chaser will offer you. A number
04:07you're familiar with. £999. I see what you did there. However if you wish to take a step
04:13closer to the chaser she will offer you. £18,000. Have a chat with your team who are nodding in
04:19agreement. They like the sound of £18,000. Paul I think you've done the hard bit so I'd
04:24go for the £18,000 if I was you. Definitely. Maria what do you think? Well I think Anne's
04:28looking particularly benevolent today so I would go for the £18,000. You caught with £999 stress
04:33all day long dealing with a past her best school teacher. She'd be a doddle for you. Thank
04:38you very much team. Did you just say a past her best school teacher? I may have done. Right.
04:45It's your choice Paul. What will it be? I think I might just want to take a little bit
04:49of money back into the team for the final chase. So I'm going to stick for the £4,000.
04:54Alright. Take the other two sums away. Thank you. Chaser. I'm never benevolent. And I've
05:00got my eye on you now Robert. That's you done for mate. Right. It's Elvis versus the governess.
05:08For £4,000 the chase is on.
05:15Here we go. Good luck mate. Here comes the first question.
05:21Ant and Dec earned their highest chart placing with which song? A. When I fall in love. B. Shout
05:29or C. We're on the ball. You've put. We're on the ball. I don't even remember that. Do you remember?
05:40Welcome song I think. Alright. Very good. Correct answer is. Well played. Step close to the home.
05:48The chaser has put. Oh you knew it. I've mercifully wiped most of them from my memory but I did
05:56know that. Here's your next question. Which of these canals is longest? A. Suez. B. Panama. C. Caledonia.
06:08Yeah. You've put. Right. Suez. I think it's either Suez or the Panama. Right. I think it's not.
06:18There's not a lot in it really. I don't think. So you saw the two and plumped for one quite
06:20quickly. Yeah. Putting the chaser under pressure because it looked like a hand couldn't quite
06:24work out which was which. Alright. Okay. Correct answer is. Well played. Step close to the home.
06:30And the chaser has put. Has you been under pressure? And gets it wrong. Come on. Great tactic.

06:41The Rio Carnival officially finishes on which day? A. Mardi Gras. B. Midsummer's Eve.
06:51Or C. Michaelmas. You've put. Mardi Gras. I know that phrase is associated with carnivals.
07:01The other two more of a druids festival or that sort of thing so it's just an educated guess.
07:06Correct answer is. Oh yes. Mardi Gras. Now I'd have thought that was the red herring oddly enough.
07:13I thought that was too easy. Alright. The chaser has put. Yeah. Mardi Gras.
07:20Yes. Carnival literally means goodbye to meat. Carnival. Carnet Valet. Just before the beginning
07:26of Lent when you're supposed to give up meat for 40 days. Ah. That's what Mardi Gras means.
07:31No. Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday where you're eating up all the fat and grease and meat. Ah. Mardi Gras.
07:37Eat up the meat. Carnival. Goodbye to me. Indeed. Do you know what hallo meat is?
07:42Carnet Ave. There's no such phrase. Carnet Ave.

07:55Was it A. Sharjah Gabor? B. Joan Rivers? Or C. Elizabeth Taylor?
08:03You put. Joan Rivers.
08:05Yeah. It's either A or B for me. But Joan Rivers has that sort of rapier wit.
08:10Correct answer is.
08:13Unlucky. Staying where we are.
08:15The chaser has put.
08:18Yeah. Sharjah Gabor.

09:01Not really my sort of literature.
09:03No.
09:04Well, nonetheless, there we are.
09:05All of a sudden, we have a three-step gap between the two players.
09:10Ruining the fact that you didn't go for the 18,000, Paul.
09:12Yeah, I am a bit Bradley now, yeah.
09:13Yeah, yeah.
09:14Bit more confidence. You've got to have a bit more confidence.
09:17Here's what I'm hoping is going to be your last question, Paul.
09:18That means you've got it right and you're going through to the final chase.
09:20Here we go.
09:21Which of these countries is a kingdom?
09:25A. Laos.
09:27B. Nepal.

10:01Well, there's only one thing to say to the chaser.
10:03Oh.
10:04Paul, you've been to the final chase.
10:06Go and take your seat, mate.
10:06Thank you, Bradley.
10:07Well done.
10:08Well, I hope that some of them will now have the courage to go for the high offer,
10:12especially if they think I'm having a bad day.
10:13Well, will anyone go for the big money?
10:16Find out after the break on the chase.
10:17See you in a minute.
10:20Welcome back.
10:21Next to Face the Chaser, it's Mark.
10:23Welcome.
10:25Now then, did you know all Paul's questions?

10:31So knows the answer, yeah.
10:31So you wouldn't have gone for the 18, then?
10:33I might have gone for the 18 out of pure stupidity,
10:35but I might well have regretted it.
10:38Right.
10:38Are you a competitive man yourself?
10:40You could say that, yes.
10:41Why?
10:41Oh, well, I've done crazy things like when my boss challenged me to an arm wrestle.
10:46I actually beat him and then beat him again, but I've still got the job, so...
10:50Yeah, yeah.
10:50So what do you do?
10:51I negotiate property deals.
10:53So hopefully I'll be able to negotiate on that board.

20:19Well, Anne, I'm so happy to see you happy because normally, when we watch you from home,
20:24you've normally got a face like a smack backside.
20:26But...
20:26I want to stick with a 7, brother.
20:28Stick with a 7.
20:29You are?
20:29Okay, that's fine.
20:30We'll take the other two amounts away.
20:31Chase, I'm not going to look happy anymore.
20:33Come on, let's do it.
20:35For 7,000 pounds, the chase is on.
20:42Good luck.
20:43Here comes the first question.
20:46What medal did Torval and Dean win at the 1994 Lilyhammer Winter Olympics?
20:51Was it A, gold, B, silver, C, bronze?
20:58You've put...
20:58Gold.
21:01Happy with that?
21:02Absolutely.
21:03100%.
21:04Yes.
21:05Correct.
21:05Answer is...
21:08Bronze, 1994.
21:12Ah.
21:14Got to stay where we are.
21:14The chase has put...
21:18All right, bronze and nose, immediately comes onto the table.
21:21I'm afraid it was in 1984 in Sarajevo that they won the gold.
21:26Come on, Maria, we've got to do it.
21:28Here's your next question.
21:29Which of these websites was launched first?
21:34A, Facebook, B, Twitter, C, Wikipedia.
21:40You've put Wikipedia.
21:40You've put Wikipedia.
21:45Well, I can remember Wikipedia back in the day when computers weren't as flash as the word,
21:49things like this.
21:50Really?
21:50I hope so.
21:52So I think it was Wikipedia.
21:53Right.
21:54Correct answer is...
21:56Oh, well played, Maria.
21:59Terrific.
22:00Step close to the home.
22:01The chase has put...
22:03Yeah.
22:04Do you Twitter, Anne?
22:06I don't Twitter.
22:07I follow...
22:08I watch other people Twitter.
22:09Tweet.
22:10Listen, I mean, let's be serious.
22:12Isn't that a bit of a waste of time, though?
22:14Tweet, tweeting, twittering?
22:15No.
22:16Certainly when the chase is on, it's terribly useful.
22:19Is it?
22:19You can actually see what people are saying at the time.
22:22And when the game is developing in a really exciting way,
22:25then people start tweeting about it and telling their friends,
22:28watch this, watch this now.
22:29Really?
22:30Yeah.
22:31I didn't know that.
22:31Yeah.
22:32Here's the next question.
22:34Dolores O'Riordan is lead singer of what band?
22:40Is it A, the Cranberries, B, Catatonia, C, Garbage?
22:48You've put...
22:49Garbage.
22:53I just had this feeling it wasn't Catatonia or the Cranberries for some reason.
22:58Something was just...
22:59It was just jumping out at me.
23:00Correct answer is...
23:02The Cranberries.
23:04The Cranberries.
23:05I know that's good for you if you've got cystitis.
23:07But you're not never ready to have that, though.
23:09I don't know.
23:10You've got to stay where you're put.
23:12The Chaser's put.
23:14Yeah, the Cranberries, and comes a step behind us.
23:20Right.
23:20Come on, Maria.
23:21We've got to start getting these right.
23:22We are four from home.
23:23Let's do it.
23:24Here's your next question.
23:25The characters, Rusty Ryan, Linus Caldwell, and Bashatar, are members of what movie group?
23:34A, The Magnificent Seven.
23:37B, The Dirty Dozen.
23:38C, Ocean's Eleven.
23:40C, Ocean's Eleven.
23:44You have put.
23:47The Dirty Dozen.
23:49I love the films, and I remember the people in them, but I can't remember the names of the characters, so I'm just hoping that that's right.
23:56To stay in the game of £7,000, correct answer is.
24:03It's Ocean's Eleven.
24:05We've got to stay where we are.
24:06Has The Chaser got it right and put us out?
24:09We'll find out after the break.
24:13Oh, welcome back to The Chase.
24:16Now, Maria here is four from home, and we're clinging on.
24:19Before the break, I asked Maria the question.
24:22The characters, Rusty Ryan, Linus Caldwell, and Bashatar, are members of which movie group?
24:27Now, Maria got it wrong.
24:28Correct answer was Ocean's Eleven.
24:30If the governess has got it right, we are going out.
24:33If she's got it wrong, we are staying in.
24:35The Chaser has put.
24:40Ouch.
24:41Oh, right.
24:43Ocean's Eleven.
24:46Sorry, I'm extremely familiar with The Dirty Dozen in particular.
24:49Yeah.
24:49So I would have expected to see names like Victor Franco or Archer Maggot up there.
24:53However, I'm sorry, Maria, you have been caught.
24:55A few of the chase is over.
24:58Bye-bye.
25:00Well, fabulous top.
25:03Yeah.
25:03Same colour as the table when I beat her.
25:05Absolutely.
25:06However, your nemesis is on his way.
25:09Oh, yeah.
25:09Oh, this is going to be a match.
25:12Last up, it's Robert.
25:16Welcome.
25:18Hello.
25:19The Calm Before the Storm.
25:22Favourite subject, Robert?
25:24Probably literature.
25:25Least favourite?
25:26Popular culture.
25:27I was just about to say, I bet popular culture is a sticking point.
25:30Anyway, right now, let's see if we can take some big money to the table.
25:34Shall we?
25:34Quickfire questions against the clock, Robert.
25:36I wish you luck.
25:37Your time starts now.

26:43£6,000, Robert.
26:45Not enough.
26:45You don't think so?
26:46No.
26:47Well, you might get dealt up big numbers, though.
26:50I think she'd like to get closer to you just so she can slap you.
26:54It's time to face the chaser.
27:09Hello, Robert.
27:11Hello, Anne.
27:12You were being very rude about me back there.
27:15Oh, in honesty, it's sometimes confused with rudeness.
27:18You're being unnecessarily cheeky to a member of the Scotland quizzing team.
27:22Don't you want us to win the Nations Cup next time?
27:24Frightly, my dear, I don't give a damn.
27:26This is going to be great.
27:28Here's your £6,000.
27:29£6,000.
27:29Three steps ahead of the governess.
27:31Now, if you wish to take a step closer to home, Robert, the chaser will offer you...
27:34You look rather scared.
27:35I'll give you a get-out clause.
27:37£2,000.
27:38That's generous.
27:39If you wish to take a step closer to the chaser, she will offer you...
27:43I don't believe for a moment you have the nerve, but £36,000.
27:47Oh, that would rack it up to £40,000.
27:50Have a chat with Paul.
27:51Your team mate.
27:52Last man standing.
27:54£36,000.
27:55Wow, I really need a partner, though, back here.
27:58I wouldn't blame you at all if you went for the two.
28:01Thank you, Paul.
28:02Very magnanimous.
28:03Robert, your decision obviously is bad enough for him to beat a lady.
28:07To rub her nose and it would be completely ungallant.
28:10So, in fairness to her and to support my colleague, I should perhaps go for £6,000.
28:14But there again, we'll be wimping out.
28:16So what we'll do is we'll toss him back to a coin and go for the £36,000.
28:22Excellent.
28:23Right, take the other two sums away.
28:26Johannes.
28:27All right, you have more nerves than I thought you did.
28:30Now we're rocking and rolling.
28:32Robert, for £36,000, the chase is on.
28:39Great stuff.
28:41Good luck.
28:41Let's do it.
28:42Come on, we can get away with it.
28:43Here's your first question.
28:46Native to India, what is a gharial?
28:49Is it A, a gibbon?
28:51A B, crocodile?
28:53Or C, stork?
29:00Oh, you should be very casual with your buttons there, Robert.
29:03I have to say, I thought you wasn't going to take your hands out of your pockets.
29:05No, it's easy when you know them.
29:07You've put...
29:08stork?
29:10The gharial stork.
29:11It's nice with a bit of roasted butter.
29:13Correct answer is...
29:16Yes, it's a crocodile.
29:21Got to stay where we are.
29:23The chaser's put.
29:26Yeah, and knows that, and immediately ends up a step behind us.
29:30It's the one with the very long, thin snout.
29:34It's a cousin of the Hegarty.
29:36Yes, it is.
29:37Come on, Robert.
29:38Got to start getting these right.
29:39Here's your next question.
29:40Doncaster Sheffield Airport is named after which legendary character?
29:47Is it A, King Arthur, B, Lady Godiva, or C, Robin Hood?
29:53You've put.
29:59Robin Hood.
30:01Well, that's what it's called.
30:02It is?
30:03It is.
30:03Correct answer is...
30:05Oh, it is right.
30:07That's good.
30:08Chase has put.
30:11The only connection I can think of is that there is a Robin Hood's Bay in Yorkshire,
30:15but it's not particularly nearby.
30:17No.
30:18Thank you for that.
30:19Here's your next question.
30:19Which of these Saturday morning TV shows ran for the longest time?
30:25Is it A, Tiswas, B, Saturday Superstore, or C, SMTV Live?
30:37You have put.
30:39Saturday Superstore.
30:41This one is a guess, sadly.
30:43Correct answer is...
30:45Come on, Robert.
30:47Tiswas.
30:48That was my second choice.
30:49Really?
30:49Got to stay where we are.
30:51Any regrets of going for the £36,000?
30:54Well, if I hadn't got it right, yes, of course.
30:57Do you think she'll get it right?
30:59Yes.
31:00Okay.
31:01The chaser has put...
31:03B-Rong.
31:10Oh, also go Saturday Superstore.
31:13All right, look, that's a reprieve.
31:14Got to get them right.
31:15Come on, Robert.
31:15Here's your next question.
31:16Which brand was the first to appear in neon lights in Piccadilly Circus?
31:23A, Bass.
31:24B, Bovril.
31:26Or C, Branston.
31:28You've put...
31:32You've put...
31:33B, Bovril.
31:34It seems a reasonable answer.
31:36Yeah.
31:37Do you remember this?
31:39No, no, reasonable in terms of it's a total guess.
31:41Oh, I see.
31:43All right.
31:43Correct answer is...
31:45Well played, Bovril it is.
31:48The chaser has put...
31:51Yeah, Bovril knows that.
31:53And closes that gap.
31:55Here's the next question.
31:58The song, Fly Me to the Moon, mentions Jupiter and which other planet?
32:03A, Venus.
32:04B, Mars.

32:18Let me see what life is like on Jupiter and Mars.
32:22Is it rhymes with stars?
32:23Correct answer is...
32:26Very good.
32:28On our way home, we have three to go.
32:30The chaser has put...
32:31Yeah, brilliant stuff and stays the one step behind us.
32:36Great tune.
32:37Dreadful singing, but quite right.
32:39Right, here's the next question.
32:43Which Bond actor bought Ian Fleming's typewriter for £52,800?
32:49A, Pierce Brosnan.
32:51B, Sean Connery.
32:53C, Roger Moore.
32:58You put...
33:00Pierce Brosnan.
33:01I reckon Sean Connery probably can't type.
33:04Roger Moore.
33:06Just, he's not the sort of thing they would do.
33:09Pierce Brosnan probably collects things.
33:11This is all very speculative, I have to say.
33:15Well, I'd work on what little I've got.
33:17To stay in the game with 36, please let this be right.
33:20The correct answer is...
33:21Well, two from home, it's great, well done.
33:27The chaser has put...
33:29Been wrong.

33:37He was sort of rather too frivolous to spend money on something as sentimental as that.
33:42Yeah, brilliant.
33:43But that gives us a lovely little cushion.
33:46Here's the next question.
33:47Come on, let's get these two right and get home.
33:50Which sport involves jumping at and sticking to a Velcro-covered wall while wearing a Velcro suit?

34:06You've put...

34:13All right, correct answer is...
34:15Come on, be right.
34:16Yeah, get in one from home.
34:19The chaser has put...
34:22Yeah, also bar flight jumping.
34:25Invented where, do you know?
34:26I haven't the faintest idea.
34:27Yeah, mad, but...
34:28Hey, fun nonetheless, I guess.
34:30Here's what I'm hoping is going to be your last question.
34:33Because you've got it right.
34:34You've got through with 36 grand.
34:36This has been a great chase, Robert.
34:39Rude is another name for what?
34:42A, cross.
34:44B, altar.
34:46C, church.
34:50You know this, and I know you know this.
34:52No, no, it's a guess, a guess.

35:00Edinburgh, Hollywood host.
35:01I don't know what to do now.
35:02You've put.

35:07The correct answer is for 36 grand.
35:09Come on, Robert.
35:10Yes, absolutely on the button.
35:14Brilliant.
35:15With room to spare.

35:22I am looking forward to this.
35:25Brilliant stuff.
35:25Go and take your place in the final chase.

35:44Welcome back.
35:44Paul and Robert have made it through to the final chase.
35:47There's £40,000 in the total prize fund.
35:51Now on the buzzer and against the clock, the team must answer as many questions as they can.
35:56Each right answer puts them a step further away from the chaser.
35:59Then the chaser has the same amount of time to try and catch the team.
36:02If she does, they go home with nothing.
36:04If Anne fails, the boys go home with £40,000, £20,000 each.
36:09That would be nice, wouldn't it, lads?
36:11Lovely.
36:11Yeah.
36:12You're playing the governess Anne Hegarty in the final chase.
36:15She has lost £40,000 before.
36:19And she lost to two players.
36:20So it's the worst combo.
36:22So I don't know if that's an omen.
36:23However, two of you have made it through to the final chase.
36:26Therefore, you get an automatic two-step head start on our chaser.
36:30I wish you luck.
