00:00You see this across all sports.
00:02This is not specific to the NFL, but it happens in the NFL,
00:06where leadership knows things are going bad,
00:09and they make a move just to make it look better.
00:12It is not an attempt at chasing a type.
00:16To me, the trade deadline should generally be used for two things.
00:20You're a good team.
00:22You think one player can make you a great team.
00:24We saw the Bears just do that with Jeffrey Simmons.
00:27The most famous example,
00:28I think when the NFL trade deadline really kind of hit the turbo button,
00:32when things started to change,
00:34November 1st, 2021,
00:36the Rams sent a second and a third to Denver to acquire Von Miller.
00:41Three months after that, Von Miller had two sacks and a Super Bowl win.
00:45That's the trade deadline.
00:46We think we're good.
00:47We're going to go get this guy to win a ring.
00:50That's what the Bears just did.
00:51That's what the Niners did in some capacity with Buckner,
00:54even if it's like what the Seahawks did to acquire Quentin Nelson.
00:58Those are teams that think they are real contenders that are adding pieces
01:02to help them chase rings.
01:04That's what the trade deadline should function as.
01:06The other side of that coin,
01:08especially with them moving it back a week,
01:10if you know you're bad, be bad.
01:13Send those guys away.
01:14Build for the future.
01:16In between those extremes,
01:18it's a lot harder to validate a ton of movement.
01:22And Adam Peters, to his credit this morning,
01:24said we can't be reactionary to what happened Sunday.
