00:00From news and notes to the coaches and players for America's team, let us go Inside the Star on 105
00:07.3 The Fan.
00:11Is this the worst thing, the biggest mistake that Jerry Jones has ever said on this show in our 15
00:18years of doing it?
00:20Sean Treve, RJ Choppy, Cowboys insider Bobby Bell, thanks for being a TOLO, y'all.
00:24That stands for Turn It On, Leave It On.
00:26Your home of the Mavericks, Rangers, and Cowboys, Nick Harris, Chuck Cooperstein, and Nick Eatman on today, across the 20s,
00:34show of Wales, the Hump Day Edition.
00:38Jerry Jones yesterday, when we asked him about the notion and thought that he's not willing to pay head coaches
00:47top-of-the-market, big-time money.
00:50In the NFL, this is after years of looking at all the teams and all the coaches.
00:57There is no, there is zero correlation between how much you pay a coach or how many coaches you have
01:06as to winning.
01:08There is no correlation.
01:10And that's a random sample of years and all 32 teams involved.
01:15So, put that in your hopper and smoke it.
01:17But the point is that you can be pretty creative in hiring your coaches.
01:28You can be creative sometime when you don't even know you're hiring the coaches.
01:32And so, I've had some good experience of hiring people who have never been in the NFL.
01:39I've had some experience of hiring young coaches, older coaches.
01:43And so, and of course, you constantly remind me, as you should, of what my record is.
01:52And I understand that.
01:53But I also know that the next time you throw the pick, if you were the old California gold miner,
02:01you may hit the Comstock load.
02:04Then it is glory-ho.
02:06So, yeah, big fan of the Comstock load.
02:08Put that in your hopper and smoke it.
02:10That was a good load.
02:12If you just want to talk about from how quality was that answer from either a heel perspective or whatever,
02:18I was knocking it out of the park with just about every single thing.
02:22Yeah, he had, let's see, he had there.
02:23Gia Fala was a little jealous.
02:24He's like, I've never smoked out of a hopper.
02:27Yeah, so he had smoked out of a hopper.
02:29What is a hopper?
02:30That's what Eric wanted to know.
02:32The hopper is where you put, like, all your ideas of this hopper, and then you spin it.
02:38Yeah, I know that.
02:39I didn't know if there was a smoking apparati.
02:41He said it right.
02:42There was a new vape.
02:43Yeah, no, let's put that in your pipe and smoke it.
02:44Yeah.
02:45He got the two phrases mixed up.
02:46Yeah.
02:47And then he goes all glory-hole on us.
02:49Yep.
02:49And then he talks about the Comstock load.
02:51The what?
02:51Which was the Comstock load.
02:53The Comstock load, yeah.
02:54That's what I said.
02:56Well, you don't say a commercial.
02:57You call it a commercial.
02:59Okay, yep.
02:59Right, C-O-M, Comstock load.
03:01Yep.
03:01And that's a big silver discovery in Nevada back in the 1800s.
03:07And he's also, that's who he's connected with is Comstock resources.
03:11This statement obviously blew up the rest of the day.
03:14I have not had as many Jerry texts and tweets since the incident a couple of years ago with
03:20the threat and the fire and whatever you want to call it.
03:25This, this, this, this is so bad, in my opinion, for him to basically, and who's conducting
03:33the studies over there?
03:34It's like when Jerry goes, we got the six most wins over this, yada, yada, yada.
03:37And we're like, I don't know if it's the six.
03:39It's so, he had these numbers done.
03:43We have reached, look, George Steinberg did the same thing, because the Yankees had the
03:48most wins of any team in the 80s.
03:50They never went to the, they only went to the playoffs once.
03:52They never won, they never won anything.
03:54And George was like, oh, we had the most wins in the 1980s.
03:56Yeah.
03:57I don't know why I went Mike Fisher there.
03:58Yeah, that was Mike Fisher.
04:00But Jerry has reached that part of his life.
04:04You can pick it apart, as Bobby was the first to do, right there in the moment when he goes,
04:09well, are these guys getting paid after they win big?
04:13Because everyone, you're going to see it on every television screen today, everyone with
04:16their highest paid coaches chart, and the championships next to it.
04:20Andy Reid, 20 million, three titles.
04:22John Harbaugh, 20 million, one title.
04:25Sean Payton, 20 million, one title.
04:28Sean McVay, 19 million, one championship.
04:31Shanahan, 19.
04:32And then you can go and really dissect it and say, all right, what were they making?
04:37And who actually won before getting rewarded with it?
04:42So maybe, Jerry, none of that's going to matter to the public.
04:45None of that is going to matter to the Cowboy fan base.
04:48You just said that you're not going to, you don't believe in acquiring the best to coach
04:55your football operation and team.
04:58And it is almost impossible, and maybe impossible, to truly believe that your team can go ahead
05:07and win it all and win big when that is the mentality of your owner and your general manager
05:12who, for years, has said over and over and over again, I'll write the biggest check there
05:18is it doesn't matter.
05:20And in the one area where he can write.
05:24The biggest check he wants.
05:25The biggest check that he wants.
05:26As Tolo Aaron says, the one area where Jerry could money whip the rest of the league is also
05:32the one he values the least.
05:34And he said it out loud.
05:36And that is a tremendous indictment, in my opinion.
05:41A big, big mistake.
05:42The, um, he said the same, he had the same energy, uh, I can have any, find any one of
05:48500 men to coach this team.
05:49He always lives in the 90s.
05:51Everything he does lives in the 90s with that.
05:53This oil field mentality haunts all of us.
05:59Yeah.
05:59We all have to pay the price for that damn final oil.
06:03And I know, because I'm re-watching The Gambler, and damn, it's good all over again.
06:06But that damn final hole that hit, that's how he, that's how he lives.
06:12That's how he lives everything.
06:13Yeah.
06:14Yeah.
06:14I mean, he, as Fantax just said, he holds coaches in contempt because of Jimmy.
06:18And listen, if he had said, if he had said, uh, why would I, he does the numbers game
06:28with the GM thing too.
06:29How many GMs have they had until they got it right?
06:31Why would I want to go through four or five?
06:32Yeah.
06:32Why would I want to cycle through?
06:33And then spend all that extra money too.
06:35It's Jerry Math.
06:35All he had to say was, no coach has ever won a title at two places.
06:40Why would I go find a retread coach to pay them $20 million?
06:44My issue is not that.
06:45My issue is not trying to refuse to even interview Ben Johnson.
06:51You know, that's your issue.
06:53That's not your issue.
06:53That's my issue.
06:54I don't care about trying to recreate what Sean Payton had in New Orleans or recreate
07:01what this guy had here or this guy had there.
07:04Well, why not?
07:05Why would you not want to go get Phil Jackson or like Belichick?
07:08I think it's, I think it's, Phil Jackson is, is first of all, is a different sort of situation.
07:12He had all time greats.
07:14Okay.
07:15All right.
07:16You can't recreate Bill Belichick because you can't recreate Tom Brady.
07:20You can't recreate Sean Payton in New Orleans because you can't recreate Drew Brees.
07:24Like to me, the coach or the quarterback tandem, they have to mesh.
07:27And the problem is they oftentimes don't mesh in multiple spots.
07:30They also didn't refuse to, I've said it before, they did not refuse to interview Ben Johnson.
07:34Like that was not happening.
07:35Did they interview Ben Johnson?
07:36He was not going to interview here.
07:37Did they ask?
07:38They knew he was not going to interview here.
07:40I'm telling you, you can sit here and say this all you want.
07:42Like I'm saying, if we want to be like direct and if we want to have legit criticisms, let's
07:46have him saying the Ben Johnson one we got to stop saying.
07:48It wasn't going to happen.
07:49He wasn't coming here.
07:49Well, put it like this.
07:50I think we can all agree.
07:52If and when Brian Schottenheimer is fired, they probably won't talk to all of the top
08:00candidates out there.
08:00We can all agree on that.
08:02They're not going to, and they're not going to talk, now I'll say.
08:05And now it's in the back of the mind.
08:07First, when it was just like credit and some people threw out money, now the thing that
08:12will lead with is Jerry Jones is too cheap to pay that dude to come here and win.
08:18Because there were coaches, like just use Ben Johnson for example, Ben wasn't going to
08:24coach for $4 or $5 million a year.
08:26He was going to take upwards of $15, $10 million.
08:31That was a minimum.
08:32And this team just wasn't going to pay it.
08:34That's a problem to me.
08:35That's a problem.
08:36And whether he was going to come here or not, I do think that the good sign is they brought
08:43Christian Parker in and he was an outside-the-box, young, up-and-coming candidate.
08:50Everybody's mad about that too, though.
08:52We're mad about that now.
08:53But the process, the plan, the idea was a good idea.
08:58And he has paid, right, for the most coaches on a staff at one point in time.
09:04He's had the most coaches on the staff.
09:06Which I assume would lead to the highest money spent on coaches?
09:12Probably not if you weigh the head coach versus others.
09:16This head coach has paid more than has been reported.
09:19He's not at $5 million.
09:21He's not?
09:22No.
09:23McCarthy, Garrett, I was just assuming Jason 5-6.
09:26McCarthy was not 5 when he left here.
09:28When McCarthy left here, he was making 8.
09:29Okay.
09:30And so, that's the other danger about this.
09:33I don't, I can't say with certainty what it is.
09:35I know McCarthy was 8.
09:37I can't say with certainty what it is.
09:38I know Schottenheimer is above 5.
09:40I've been told definitively it's above 5.
09:41Okay.
09:42I don't know with certainty what the number is.
09:43Like, I've heard what a number is, but I haven't been told.
09:47The problem with the head coach and sellers too is, like, nobody makes them public.
09:50Yeah.
09:51So, like, even if we're saying, let's say Brian Schottenheimer's making 10, which I don't
09:56know, but I'm just, let's say he's making 10.
09:58And that could be way high up.
09:59You can go, oh, look, that's higher up in the list of skills here.
10:01It's like, well, none of the other sellers are reported either.
10:03All the other coaches could be making 11 for all we know, and he could still be 32nd because
10:07nobody has a handle on what the salaries are.
10:09Jane Slater reacting.
10:11Of course, Jane had to, you know, interject herself and make it about me.
10:15I called the agent of a veteran coach to see if Jerry had even picked up the phone and poked
10:21around on him during the Schottenheimer hiring cycle.
10:24And he laughed and said, Jerry won't pay 13 million and up.
10:28And that's the starting point.
10:29It's well-known and well-documented.
10:32Just surprised he actually finally said it on record.
10:36RJ Ochoa reacting.
10:38Jerry probably wasn't thinking about this whatsoever.
10:40Think about what you kind of did to Brian Schottenheimer.
10:45When he steps to the podium, if he's even asked about this, I text to Bobby.
10:49I was like, please tell me that I don't have to go listen to this press conference.
10:52He said, no, they talked today, Wednesday.
10:54I was like, thank God.
10:55But it's basically like, hey, you are the, you're the day-old donuts, as Mike Bassick
11:02would say.
11:03Yeah.
11:03How do you feel like, you know, we know that you're the second, third rate in terms of
11:07what you're worth.
11:08You're the only guy that would accept the salary.
11:10Yeah.
11:11To that degree.
11:12Yeah.
11:12You know?
11:13You think it was bad, Bobby, or overblown?
11:16No, it was, it's, it came off way, it came off way too, the fan base is not going to
11:22forget this.
11:22It came off way too defiant.
11:25Like, like, just like, there was, that was not a PR answer.
11:29That was more just like, F it, I'll spend even less, almost.
11:32Like, that was kind of the energy that was behind it.
11:35Yeah, he doesn't, and then this is, it would make sense why Garrett spent a decade here
11:43with everything that he did, and McCarthy was given five years and everything else.
11:46He just doesn't think coaches are that important.
11:48That's what, he doesn't think they should be paid that much.
11:50He doesn't think they impact the game nearly as much as just players do, which is the same
11:53thing.
11:54He thought, he thinks those Super Bowls they won, he's like, it wasn't Jimmy, it was
11:57players, and, you know, that's what was responsible there.
12:00Hell, I brought Switzer in here off the couch, and he won a Super Bowl immediately.
12:04Well, they don't matter that much.
12:05The difference that is, is that.
12:07That's why he does value Will McClay, and will pay Will McClay, I think, closer to what the
12:12top of the market is.
12:13Yeah, I mean, it was also a different world.
12:15There was no salary cap when Jimmy won.
12:18You could stockpile a team.
12:19They got so, so lucky that Minnesota just completely disrespected the draft process.
12:26Didn't read the fine print.
12:28Didn't read the fine print.
12:29Didn't believe the fine print.
12:30Right.
12:30So, they're never going to cut all these guys.
12:32They've got to fill their roster.
12:33They're not going to do that with rookies.
12:34Right.
12:35So, like, that would never happen again.
12:38Which is, that is the, if you made that trade today, everybody's, they're cutting everybody.
12:42Like, you're assuming they're cutting everybody.
12:45Minnesota, that is just, you're very fortunate they were dumb about that.
12:49All right.
12:49So, there it is.
12:50Jerry getting destroyed locally, nationally, everywhere for saying the quiet part out loud.
12:58Jerry getting destroyed locally, nationally, everywhere for saying the quiet part out loud.
12:58So, there it is.
