00:00We eventually got to it with the media asking Brian Schottenheimer,
00:05uh, you good?
00:06A little bit short.
00:08Not acting like yourself after the win against Philadelphia.
00:12Are you okay?
00:13Are you mad at the media?
00:15I'll be honest.
00:15I really do a good job of blocking you guys out.
00:19You know, I think, you know, it's a big game for us.
00:23You know, we're motivated as a football team.
00:26I'm motivated as a head coach to get our guys playing to the standard that I know they're capable of
00:31playing.
00:32You know, intense game against a real rival.
00:38But, no, at the end of the day, in this business, you get paid to deal with the criticism and
00:44things that comes with the job.
00:45And that never, I mean, remember you're talking to a guy that grew up for 25 years in a household
00:50with a head coach in the NFL.
00:52So, no, it was more just, um, my focus was getting the team to be focused and motivated.
00:59And I think you saw that last night.
01:00So, I'm proud of our group.
01:02Not buying it whatsoever.
01:04Uh, he's either, what's LeBron do when he shuts down social media?
01:08What do we call that before the playoffs start?
01:10He goes into dark mode, right?
01:12This is either Schottenheimer dark mode mentality for the Philadelphia game, where I'm just shutting off the rest of the
01:19world.
01:19I'm so intensely focused.
01:21Or, he's BSing everyone a little bit, which I believe he is.
01:26And we'll ask him more about it on Friday.
01:28But the rest of his answers he gave, he gave his usual pretty good explanations.
01:32Doesn't have the same zest, the same energy.
01:34He still looked very tired.
01:35I get that.
01:37But that was his explanation for the post.
01:39Yeah, I don't think he, he doesn't look like a guy who just loves coming to work every day.
01:44Like, he looks like it's a job.
01:46That's what I'll say.
01:47Most of the time, he's looked like, I'm living my dream.
01:50I don't know that he even looks, a couple times he has, but I don't even know that for the
01:54most part of the last couple weeks that he's looked like just, I hate it.
01:57He just looks like he has to work now.
02:00Like, it's actual work.
02:01And nobody's excited to be at work all the time.
02:03He's lost his innocence in the job.
02:08You know, he's lost his innocence a little bit in the job.
02:10I compare it to the nosebleeds, right?
02:12Like, the first year that the nosebleeds were on the afternoon show, they were like, we get to be on
02:16the radio and we get to talk and this is so much fun.
02:19And then they realized, like, oh, we got to go into contract negotiations.
02:22We don't love, we don't love this all the time.
02:24And then they were a little more, they were just a little more measured, is what it was.
02:28Yeah, it's like, you know, you see your kids and your kids are innocent and then they, something happens where
02:34they're like, oh, this is real life, you know, real world.
02:36And now it's, not as innocent anymore.
02:38And he sees this and he goes through a bad streak.
02:41And we don't love him.
02:42We're starting to question him a little bit.
02:43A lot of bit.
02:44A lot of bit.
02:45You know, the honeymoon's over and that's what happens.
02:47There were three times in a week where he probably had to have a conversation with PR about, is that
02:52the response that you want to have?
02:54Yeah.
02:54That's, that's going to wear you out.
02:56Yeah.
02:56And I would imagine the next time you step up to the podium, you're going to feel like, I don't
02:59want to say anything at all.
03:00Yep.
03:00Like, you're telling me I can't skip.
03:02So you're telling me I have to do this, which I don't feel like maybe I have to.
03:05And then you're getting on me for the way I answer.
03:07Okay, fine.
03:07Well, then I'm just going to give short answers.
03:09Does not present the best for a five-year run as Jerry normally locks coaches into.
03:16You knew you were getting Mike for five.
03:19Jason, double that.
03:20You'd think Schottenheimer, three to five.
03:24But worn out this early, when we sat down with him for lunch, well, in his office, he did.
03:30I remember him talking about needing a reset and how Dan Quinn kind of helped him with his perspective.
03:36You know, he'd been doing this a long time.
03:38He maybe became a little bit jaded.
03:39So it made me think of that when he needed, like, a little bit of an optimistic reset on coaching
03:46or how he was going about doing things.
03:48But, look, I get being irritated.
03:50You've been kicked in the nuts nonstop.
03:53Everyone wants you out of here, wanted you out of here before the Philadelphia game.
03:57And you've been doing your best to accommodate the fan base and the media with your answers for a year
04:03and a half.
04:04He's gone above and beyond.
04:09The who does Petten answer to answer, the talking about Pickens and the way that he, his effort.
04:16Play calling.
04:17The I'm an elite play caller.
04:19Game management.
04:20All of those things were things that drew attention recently to, like, did he answer that the right way?
04:26And, look, PR is there to not even, like, hey, you can't say that, but to give you guidance on
04:34here's how to say it maybe.
04:36You can say the same thing.
04:36Let's maybe say it this way or, like, let's cut it this way.
04:39And I'm sure he just was getting a lot of feedback over the course of a week.
04:43And it was a little bit exhausting.
04:45Like, can I just focus on football?
04:47Do I have to worry about these sort of things?
04:48But if you want the greatest culture of all time, you've got to be able to withstand back-to-back
04:52losses.
04:53And, look, there's a lot of listeners who are okay with it.
04:56And they're like, we don't give a crap what he says.
04:58You guys care about it.
04:59Go ahead and win.
05:00We can get 17 more of those, like Bill Belichick executed while he was in New England.
05:05So, good.
05:07We don't need to hear you talking as much.
05:09I like hearing it, but there's some listeners who don't care.
05:12Now, for the game management decisions.
05:14Nice job by the media.
05:16Took a while to get to.
05:18And I was like, oh, are we not doing this?
05:19And then everyone started covering all the bases.
05:23Let's start off with the end of half.
05:27CeeDee Lamb catch.
05:28You kept one time out in your pocket.
05:31You did not attempt a third down to score the touchdown.
05:35Instead, you settled for the field goal.
05:37Any regret over that?
05:39Ryan Schottenheimer.
05:40We got the ball backed up.
05:42Our mindset was kind of, hey, let's move the ball.
05:43Let's go ensure we get some points.
05:45We want to end the half with some points and maybe, or end the game, end it with the ball.
05:52We hit the short pass to CeeDee.
05:54We like to stay on the ball, Todd.
05:55That's kind of our deal.
05:56Why?
05:56You want to kind of put the onus on the defense.
05:59But we were a little slow getting that play executed, just getting lined up and getting it snapped.
06:05But that's one of the reasons why we were able to, you know, get the big play to CeeDee is
06:09they don't have time to talk about, hey, alert, double moves and things like that.
06:12So we hit CeeDee on the double move.
06:13And, you know, I think we could have executed that play a little bit quicker.
06:17But we still got two shots at the end zone.
06:19And when you look at it, come away with points, you know, starting on the 14-yard line.
06:22I was pleased.
06:24I think I found a shot.
06:25He's burner.
06:26Who's?
06:27The people that were arguing me in the middle of the game.
06:29Is the person also following Andrew Tate?
06:32Is that?
06:34I don't know that I picked up on this one.
06:37They gave him cell phones again?
06:38No, someone, like, sent a screenshot of, like, we should have known this about Schottenheimer.
06:43He follows Andrew Tate.
06:45So he has Schottenheimer following him.
06:48Because that was almost verbatim the explanation of why it was the right thing to do in the moment.
06:55Now you set off Bobby's tism to where he's going to go look for this like he did the George
06:59Pickens possibility.
07:00No, I found the play.
07:01I've seen the play.
07:02That's not true.
07:03They did not get that double move because they couldn't change personnel.
07:07Requel and Tripp.
07:08No, I was saying you're going to go look up and see if it's the burner account.
07:11It's definitely not.
07:12It's a guy that we've known.
07:14That's argued with us for a long time.
07:16But it was almost the same exact commentary.
07:20It was they got him in the look.
07:22They didn't want them a chance to reset.
07:24They went out there and they kept pressure on him.
07:26And that's a play that doesn't happen.
07:28And I'm like, guys, you cannot predict he was going to fall.
07:32Explain that, Bob.
07:32This is a straight trip.
07:34Yeah.
07:34He tripped.
07:35This is what Seth Joyner went off about, like, over one of the technique things.
07:39And Brian Boldinger did as well.
07:40He's like, what are you doing?
07:41Where's your technique?
07:42You can't fall down.
07:43And it's like Deron Bland out there.
07:45It was Tariq Wollin out there.
07:47Like, Tariq Wollin was playing.
07:48If they stop and call a timeout, Tariq Wollin's not coming off the field.
07:52But, I mean, they were like, look, he's a straight trip.
07:56He trips on his heels.
07:58That's not they got him in a look.
07:59Right.
07:59If they call timeout, Reek would have had time to tell his feet to stay upright.
08:03Yeah.
08:04That's true.
08:04I don't love the answer.
08:05Look, to me, let's not overcomplicate it.
08:08If you don't get off a third down play there, it's a failure.
08:11Now, the overall drive, good.
08:14You came up with points.
08:16That was nice.
08:16But you still get a...
08:20What would be the grade for the drive?
08:23I think any drive you come away with points, it's a B+.
08:29Okay.
08:30Yeah, I got to put it above a C.
08:32Any drive you come away with points to me is at least a B.
08:34But this is like...
08:34Well, not any drive.
08:35You get the ball on the 5 or the 10.
08:37Well, yeah, okay, but like, you know...
08:39You get the ball on the, you know, 30.
08:41Right, yeah.
08:42But when you start on your own 13 or whatever it is...
08:44Last year, they were one of the best teams in the NFL at getting the ball with under
08:48two minutes in the first half and going down and scoring a touchdown.
08:51Like, they were doing it...
08:51They did it in a few different games last year where they would get the ball with a
08:54minute 10 left, 80 yards to go, and they would be able to move down the field and
08:58score a touchdown.
08:58They should have done it there, too.
09:01They left points on the board and they went into halftime with an extra timeout in their
09:04pocket that they didn't need.
09:05My major issue with this is, why did it...
09:08He said it took a while to get the play in.
09:10Why?
09:11Why did it take a while to get set?
09:13That's another issue.
09:14These are professionals.
09:15Like, these guys, you're in two-minute offense.
09:18Not even, really.
09:19You're in fashion with a two-minute offense.
09:20Aaron Rodgers would have cussed McCarthy out for that.
09:23Like, you know, that's...
09:25Dak can handle the play call.
09:26You should know what play call to have.
09:28And if someone's feeding him, you know, analytical information in the background...
09:33Should not take 16 seconds from the tackle to getting up and snapping the ball from what
09:37they would do.
09:38That took too long to get going regardless.
09:41Take 12 to 13.
09:42And it also was like, you had a timeout.
09:44You could have said, like, when the tackle happened, you were saving 15, 16 seconds if
09:48you call timeout.
09:49So, that is Schottenheimer on end of half.
09:53Schottenheimer already said he was pleased.
09:55End of half.
09:56Even though he saved the timeout.
09:58Didn't get a touchdown opportunity off on third down.
10:02Would you like to hear about the Lipke run or running it instead of Dak throwing it backed
10:09up on their own goal line, giving Philadelphia the ball at midfield?
10:14I think the Lipke one got the most passes from people out of the three.
10:18So, probably the...
10:19Not the most passes?
10:20Like, people were most okay with it?
10:22Yeah, because people were like, go ahead, like, just get out of here and get the two
10:26possession lead.
10:27Like, I saw a lot of people who were like, oh, you're just trying to not turn the ball
10:30over and kick a field goal and go out by two possessions.
10:32The other one was just, that was, you were still in a dogfight.
10:36Like, do something.
10:37All right, let's do the Lipke one.
10:38Um, cause, I think because it was Hunter Lipke, I got a lot of backlash, uh, that I saw on
10:44it with the decision.
10:46Uh, here is, uh, Schottenheimer.
10:48Chop, you want to reset the situation?
10:50Do you have that?
10:51This is to go up two scores, field goal, but we're just like, throw it on third and eight,
10:58third and nine.
10:59Instead of Lipke running it.
11:02That was, I think, start of the fourth quarter.
11:03Yeah, I'll pull it up real quick.
11:04When they ended up going up two scores.
11:06Here's Schottenheimer.
11:07Yeah, there was.
11:08Again, I think the score, uh, I don't remember the exact score, but I knew the field goal
11:11was really important at that point.
11:13Um, and I really liked the call.
11:14Uh, he just kind of got his feet tangled up a little bit.
11:17I thought I had a chance just like the quarterback draw did, uh, against the light box.
11:21So he compared it to the Dak two point light box, like the look, feet got tangled up.
11:26Doesn't sound like there was any regret there.
11:28Yeah, there was, there was 10 minutes to go in the game.
11:30Yeah, Hunter Lipke's going to get his feet tangled up, by the way.
11:32That's how he plays football.
11:34Like that kind of thing is going to happen with Hunter Lipke.
11:36Uh, yeah, there's 10 minutes to go in the game.
11:38It's a seven point lead.
11:39Like we're way past.
11:41Just 10.
11:42We're way past being.
11:44Yeah, I want the two possession, but like there's two things to it.
11:48Two things.
11:49I can still get the field goal with a sack or an incomplete pass.
11:55Yes, I can throw a pick.
11:58Yes, I can have a sack fumble.
12:00I can even have a penalty and I'm well within, I'm good to go with a 10 point lead.
12:04So I can accomplish a 10 point lead.
12:06I'm just really narrowing my chance to make it a 14 point lead because I'm not throwing it with my
12:14$60 million quarterback.
12:15It's not like you're at the 35 and a holding penalty brings you back and now you're looking at a
12:2358 to 60.
12:24It's that you're at the 10 yard line, right?
12:28You know, you're in the red zone.
12:29Like you're not missing that field goal.
12:31I mean, right.
12:32I think it is more a turn the ball over thing where it's they've been, you know, the week before
12:37they did have a turnover in the red zone.
12:39There, Dak has historically had more problems with Fangio than anybody else in terms of disguising things.
12:46So I think more is just about like, let's not put the ball in harm's way against a Fangio defense
12:50here trying to like trick you into doing something.
12:52Which I still don't accept as good enough explanation.
12:55No, I don't either.
12:56Yeah, like that's, if this is JJ McCarthy, if this is a rookie quarterback, this guy's been in the league
13:05a dozen years.
13:06He should, you know, like, yeah, again, I think it is the concept of passing in the red zone to
13:12him.
13:12Well, so we have a divide.
13:15Choppy, you spoke to it last night about trusting the quarterback.
13:19And that's something I've been saying, but I'm willing to subscribe to Bobby's theory and argument.
13:24It's either not fully trusting the offense or Marty ball.
13:29It's the genes of Marty ball where it's let's just make sure we get it.
13:34Let's be old school.
13:35It's not me insulting Dak.
13:38It's just getting the absolute sure thing.
13:40And I think that's what you think this is more of, Bob.
13:42Yeah, it's it's that I think is just philosophically 30 years in the NFL thinking.
13:50Which, by the way, for everyone who wants Troy to take over as general manager here, Troy would absolutely subscribe
13:56with what Schottenheimer did.
13:58I think more often than not, he says, kick it too many coaches leaving points on the board and too
14:04many people are going for it.
14:06You know, he was critical on the other one.
14:08Yeah.
14:08Right.
14:08Where it was like when they were backed up with their own zone.
14:11Yes.
14:11Like, you know, just try to try to get a first down here.
14:13Yes.
14:13Give up.
14:13Yeah.
14:14Yeah.
14:15I mean, like this, you know, this is it's pretty simple.
14:20Like, do you believe that you're and if you have a defense that's above average, this is another discussion.
14:29But in four plays, the other team's likely to score a touchdown on you.
14:33Pretty much.
14:35Yeah.
14:35Like they did to open the game.
14:36To open the game.
14:38You've got to you've got to be able to to determine that.
14:41Hey, you know, my quarterback is it's pretty good with the football.
14:45He's not going to throw a ton of picks.
14:46Yeah.
14:47It's OK.
14:48Are the San Francisco 49ers in that same position not going to let Brock Purdy throw it?
14:54You know, like, yeah, are the Lions and the Packers and the Bears.
15:00Now, maybe not again, maybe not a rookie quarterback.
15:03Maybe Kellen Moore, but the Saints isn't going to trust Tyler Shuck in that same situation.
15:09This is I mean, Dak Prescott has been around the league.
15:12He is a good enough player.
15:14He's paid more than enough to tell you that that's a moment.
15:19Put the ball in his hands.
15:20Let him make a play.
15:21This next one I had the least problem with.
15:24I knew that they were just when when they snuck it with Dak, I was like, all right, they're just
15:28they're just trying to get punting room here.
15:30But still, I can get a possible first down and not just give the ball.
15:35I give myself a chance to have a new set of downs and burn more clock and not have Philadelphia
15:41get it at midfield with a field goal before halftime.
15:45Instead, they ran it.
15:47I believe it was third and eight.
15:48So here's Schottenheimer on not throwing it while backed up.
15:52You know, when you're down there on the one or two yard line, you want to create space.
15:56That was the first down play.
15:57The second down play, we actually had a run called and there was an opportunity to throw the ball to
16:01GP versus a heavy box.
16:03I thought, you know, Quinion Mitchell made a great play.
16:05And then, you know, as the play caller and head coach, you really got to decide at that point, you
16:09know, what's the risk reward.
16:10I was okay at that point, punting the football.
16:13That's why we called that play.
16:14There it is.
16:15Three for three.
16:16No regret.
16:18Which does scare me a lot a bit moving forward.
16:21If there was just one, he was going to say, we screwed that up.
16:24I want that back.
16:25Which one would you want?
16:26The before half with the timeout.
16:28Yeah.
16:29That, to me, is the worst.
16:31Yeah.
16:32Probably that one.
16:33It's not to go up there and defend something that you just took from the booth, though.
16:36Now you got Tolo saying, hey, it's all for naught if Dak makes the right throw.
16:42If Dak doesn't screw up the throw, Lamb's in the end zone and we're not talking about this.
16:46Yeah, we're not talking about it, but because that all happened, you exposed yourself to mismanaging the timeouts in the
16:53game situation.
16:54And then he just sat right back down yesterday and said, nope, three for three.
16:57I was expecting one.
16:59I was expecting a one out of three.
17:00Well, even if he hit them in stride, they score.
17:03We may not be talking about it, but they ought to be talking about it in the building, why it
17:07did take so long to get the play in and to get set up.
17:11And I would hope that because every team is doing that.
17:14They're doing a complete audit of the game.
