00:00From news and notes to the coaches and players for America's team, let us go Inside the Star on 105
00:08.3 The Fan.
00:11I was waiting and waiting and waiting through Monday until 6 p.m. I realized Brian Schottenheimer wasn't even talking.
00:19And then yesterday I waited and I waited and I waited until Brian Schottenheimer showed up about 17 minutes late.
00:27He manages media, press conferences like the end of the Ravens game.
00:31But he finally got up there and gave the opening answer on who and how much he messed up.
00:41Well, I didn't do very good in the last 28 seconds.
00:44I think when you talk about finishing the game, which I really think you look at our two games that
00:49we've lost.
00:50Joe, we haven't finished.
00:52And I was a big part of this one.
00:54Like I said, I talked about after the game, I felt like I overcoached Dak on third down.
01:00Kind of affected his decision making a little bit.
01:03And then I let that kind of bleed over to my decision about kicking the ball.
01:07My dad had a rule, one play at a time.
01:10He talked a lot about, because it happened to him, he made a decision on a play.
01:15It didn't go good.
01:17He was pissed off about it, and it affected another decision, and I think that's kind of what happened to
01:22me.
01:22So I'll take accountability for it.
01:25It's football and life.
01:27It's what happens.
01:28But I hurt our chance to win that game.
01:30And I'll be better.
01:33And I'm better than that.
01:34I'm better than I performed in the last 28 seconds.
01:37We'll be better.
01:38Perfect answer.
01:40Everything you'll want to hear.
01:42Also the answer you expected, right?
01:44Yeah.
01:44Like you expected him to say something to that effect.
01:47Yeah.
01:47I didn't expect him to say, I didn't expect him to step in it.
01:50You know, he knows what he's doing.
01:52He's good.
01:53He's a good orator.
01:55Yeah.
01:55I mean, but we've covered a lot of coaches around here who didn't own it like that.
02:00Jason Garrett never owned it.
02:02Mike McCarthy would own it a little bit more.
02:05But Jason was allergic to it.
02:07He was never going to sit there and be like, I screwed up.
02:09I don't recall it at all with him.
02:11Well, guys, you got behind the chains.
02:13Well, look, it only matters so much.
02:15As I'm sure every Tolo is about to text at 877-881-1053.
02:20The deeper issue is Brian Schottenheimer didn't burn one of the four things for dinner.
02:29He burned all four.
02:30Oh, yeah.
02:31Even the bread.
02:32Even the bread.
02:32So the next time I go to your house and you say you're cooking the very next time, you're
02:39telling me you're not going to burn anything of the four?
02:43You burned the kick.
02:45You burned the third down.
02:47You burned the defensive play.
02:49And you burned finishing with Javante.
02:52You messed them all up.
02:53I didn't get a Brian Broaddus cheesecake.
02:57Oh, no.
02:57You know, I didn't get one passable thing for the dinner.
03:02You burned them all.
03:03You burned everything.
03:04So my big worry is, okay, like, they're not going to happen again or something.
03:11Because it is hard to simulate all these different crazy end-of-game scenarios.
03:15You can't simulate everything.
03:19But some of these things were basic.
03:21And he said the Marty Schottenheimer thing, the carryover to the next play, screwed him.
03:27Yeah.
03:27And the thought process with the Aubrey kick.
03:30Yeah.
03:30But it goes back to what Bobby said yesterday.
03:32What is actually instilled in you?
03:33Are you just a bad cook?
03:36Because kicking and not going for it even on fourth, that just may be deeply ingrained in him.
03:43Look, it's very – I think it's very – when you grew up –
03:45Phone fades and looking at your fancy pass chart may be ingrained in him versus finishing an obvious Javante handoff.
03:53Which it was, on the final drive at least, Shotti confirmed yesterday what I know Archer had been wondering and
04:00had been thought of,
04:01which was that first and goal play with 20 seconds left.
04:04Dak moved into that.
04:06That was a run play.
04:07And so – and, like, if you watch it, they're run blocking.
04:10But he got the look of Pickens one-on-one.
04:11So, at least that first down one from the two, that first play was Dak checking into the throw.
04:16I – I – I love – I love his old man.
04:19I love Marty.
04:20I thought he was a really good coach.
04:22I think he's one of the most underrated coaches ever.
04:23He's a conservative –
04:24Yes.
04:25Coach.
04:25Marty Ball.
04:26Marty Ball.
04:26And that's –
04:27Marty Ball and then – what did you call Shotti before he got here?
04:30R2-P2.
04:31It's very hard.
04:32That stands for –
04:32A run, run, pass, punt.
04:34I mean, go look at us with our own parents.
04:36Like, our parents instilled in us certain tendencies that you just can't – that doesn't break.
04:43Yeah.
04:43You know?
04:44Except for Bobby.
04:44Except for Bobby.
04:45Except for Bobby.
04:46It doesn't break.
04:46And that's – and that's the way it is.
04:49Whatever.
04:49I mean, he's got to fight through that.
04:50But I remember when Jerry hired McCarthy, we were like, let's go Lincoln Riley or –
04:58Lincoln Riley.
04:58Or Matt Rule.
04:59And he said, I'm not – I don't want to pay somebody to learn on the job.
05:03Okay.
05:04Well, he went – this time he went with Shotti.
05:06Now, first time head coach.
05:08Yeah.
05:08So there's a learning on the job there.
05:10And then Christian Parker.
05:11But also 25 years in the game.
05:15Yeah.
05:15I was going to say, Shotti –
05:1625 years.
05:17I don't feel him, like, as learning on the job.
05:19Shotti's –
05:20But he still is, right?
05:21Yeah, he is.
05:22Shotti is – and I've used this analogy before –
05:25Shotti's Hillary Clinton.
05:27Shotti's been running for, like, that job.
05:29The real players were in the emails?
05:31Yeah.
05:32Shotti's been running for that job for 30 years.
05:35So, like, even though it's first time, he's going to be –
05:38it's like his whole life has been driven towards doing all of that.
05:41So I don't feel like it's the same rookie expectation.
05:44But he still has to make those calls.
05:47Yeah.
05:47In 28 seconds, he's got to make seven different decisions.
05:50I need to go back and look.
05:51I was just thinking of this.
05:52I need to go look at all the games that were within one score at the end of last year
05:55and look at how they handled the last two minutes
05:57and see how many times it came up where there was just complete flubs.
05:59Brian Schottenheimer on overall game management.
06:02Yeah, well, I'll take you through the whole sequence, actually, Todd.
06:04You know, I mean, so we get the P.I. penalty down there to CD.
06:08And first and goal from the two, we call a run.
06:11And we have run tags for our elite players on the outside, if they're one-on-one.
06:16We can do different things.
06:17And they played one-on-one, so we took the shot to CP.
06:22Second down, felt really good about the call.
06:24Unfortunately, we had a false start penalty, so that kind of moved us back.
06:28So we had to adjust at that point.
06:30Second down, I thought Baltimore did a really good job.
06:32They covered the concept that we had, so Dak did a nice job moving up and scrambling.
06:37We called timeout immediately because, you know,
06:39you wanted to make sure you have enough time to score.
06:41I mean, we were not trying to tie that game.
06:45You know, we wanted to try to take the victory and take the lead.
06:50Terrence Steele's on the ground, you know, so then Broderick goes in.
06:53And then third down's where I over-coach Dak,
06:55and I put him into a mindset he normally doesn't play with.
06:58So that's where I made the mistake.
07:00And then, like I said, at the end of the day, you know, when that happens,
07:04you know, you have to move on.
07:06At that point, I'm no longer the play caller.
07:08I'm now the head coach.
07:10And the communication with Nick and feeder wasn't good enough.
07:13And so that starts with me.
07:16And so take responsibility, take accountability for it.
07:19But, again, those things will not happen again.
07:24Remember there reached a point – I'm trying to remember.
07:27This would have been – I think it was under McCarthy.
07:29I don't think it was Garrett.
07:30But there reached a point where Jerry came on here,
07:32and he started asking about, like, we have 27 assistant coaches.
07:36And he was like, basically it was like considering,
07:38why do we have so many assistant coaches if this isn't going –
07:40I feel like, yes, this past weekend was a similar breaking point for him of,
07:46like, okay, hold on, what's going on with the communication?
07:48How do we communicate these late-game decisions?
07:49Because this isn't working.
07:50And to that point, players are restricted in terms of practice time.
07:54Absolutely.
07:54You can only get so much.
07:55You coaches are not.
07:59Like, how much time are they spending –
08:01someone really does need to open a football camp for fourth-quarter simulations.
08:06Someone needs to –
08:07Bill Belichick should do it when he gets run out of Carolina.
08:10Open up a camp.
08:11All these coaches go like they do for tight end weekend and learn
08:15and go through 50 different scenarios.
08:18Because you're not limited in terms of classroom time on that.
08:21They can stay in the building all day, all night.
08:24This is what you're paid to do.
08:26You know, and again, some of the basic fundamental things.
08:28And another thing.
08:29And yesterday I went off about the pass rush and the football 101 rant.
08:33And you could call me stupid on this.
08:35Michael Lombardi certainly would.
08:37Because all Lombardi did after the Malcolm Butler pick was talk about how,
08:42hey, Marshawn Lynch, like, he wasn't going to score against us.
08:46It was a run front.
08:48It was a run look.
08:49And when I hear, Bobby, you say – and I'm not attacking you because the coaches
08:53acted on it.
08:53And when I hear Schottenheimer say, we had a run, but we got one-on-ones on the outside.
09:00So we're going to go to that.
09:01That bothers me.
09:03I do think – I think that's a Dak call.
09:05I think Dak called into that.
09:06That bothers me because you're still on the two.
09:11And everyone, for the most part, is going to play you to run the football.
09:15Like, I can run against a run front, or I'd like to attempt to run against a run front
09:20versus they're showing run, so Russell Wilson had to drop back.
09:24No.
09:24I would have bet any amount of money all my life, Marshawn Lynch was going to score.
09:27I'll take that to my grave.
09:29No one can convince me otherwise.
09:30I don't care who says it.
09:32Oh, it's a run look.
09:33Okay?
09:34Yeah.
09:35That's why you play the offensive line.
09:37In Madden, when they play goal line defense, you never run the football on the one-yard line.
09:40You can throw up a fade.
09:41Like, and I'm joking there to a degree.
09:43That's why we all pass on fourth and inches.
09:44When we get fourth and inches, they're clogging the middle.
09:48And the defense knows you're going to pass, too, right?
09:49We pass it.
09:49Yeah, absolutely.
09:50Because of that.
09:50Yeah.
09:51So, there's Schottenheimer on game management.
09:54We've got to figure out after the season.
09:56Real quick.
09:57Yeah.
09:58You said he overcoached Dak.
10:00We're getting to that right here.
10:02Listen to this.
10:03There's some code where we need to figure out and find out of what this word is that sends
10:08the message to Dak, don't even make a football play.
10:11Throw it out.
10:11Orlovsky.
10:13No.
10:13No, I trust Dak.
10:14This has got nothing to do with trust.
10:16This has got to do with everything that was going on.
10:19You know, again, Terrence Steele comes out.
10:22Broderick goes in.
10:23And you're like, okay, we need the points.
10:24At that point, it's third and seven.
10:26But I trust Dak Prescott completely.
10:28So, it was the word that I chose, which I'm not going to give away.
10:31The words that we say have meaning.
10:32And when I said the word, it put him into a mindset that he doesn't play with.
10:36He doesn't play that way.
10:37He doesn't play the game that way.
10:38And so, that's what I would change.
10:41Go ahead.
10:42I've heard a lot of, and there's a fine line.
10:45I think there's a fine line between being undercoached, appropriately coached, and then
10:50overcoached.
10:51And you hear, like, these great, all-time great quarterbacks, they always say, I get
10:55mad when I'm not coached.
10:57Yeah.
10:58But I almost feel like I would rather my quarterback be undercoached than overcoached at times.
11:03Well, for the record, I do love that Schottenheimer gives the last-second reminder because these
11:09guys black out sometimes.
11:11Sure.
11:11Whether it's not having the timeouts.
11:13On the zone, yeah.
11:13Hey, if it's not there, throw it away.
11:15But whatever Schottenheimer told him was too premature to lead to the throwaway, where
11:22it wasn't even that last half-second in hesitation to see that Pickens was available at the pylon
11:29that Dak was regretful for and mad about afterwards.
11:32So whatever that word is, is like, it's not even take three steps back and abort.
11:39It was an immediate abort based upon the way the defense looked to be lining up.
11:44Yeah, and Dak said this.
11:45But I want Schottenheimer to say, if it's not there, you've got two seconds.
11:50I do, too.
11:50It's got to be out of bounds.
11:51You've got to throw it away.
11:52Because Dak has held on the football a little bit too long sometimes throughout his career.
11:55Yeah, Dak post-game similarly talked about whatever the call was, and he similarly was
12:03like, I don't want to get into what was said.
12:07So there clearly is, both of them are representing this as though whatever they said is like the
12:14secret password for their entire offense or something, the way they're talking about it.
12:18But it's to a point where I would prefer at this stage of Dak's career, you're just not
12:24in his ear at all in the final 90 seconds if it's a drive like that.
12:28Like, just go ahead and let him play it.
12:31Specifically because I think Schottenheimer does have, and we've talked about this before,
12:34he does have a tendency to pull it back.
12:39And then, again, I don't think just with Dak, he shows aggressiveness.
12:43Kicking.
12:44Yeah, he shows aggressiveness for the first 58 minutes of most football games.
12:48The final two minutes he has shown, it's Green Bay last year.
12:53Here, just go for the touchdown.
12:55Your defense isn't stopping anybody.
12:56Don't kick this field goal, and don't let Green Bay go down the field and kick another
12:59field goal to give you a tie game.
13:00You've trained him for this moment.
13:02He's ready to go.
13:03You've, you've, you've, you're, you're, your boy was playing, you know, his first year
13:07of baseball.
13:08Well.
13:08There was that one dad who was like, hey, do this, you know, keep your arms up, okay,
13:11don't swing too hard.
13:12Too much.
13:12Yeah.
13:13And it's just like, you get up to the plate, it's like, well, I, I don't know what I'm doing
13:16now.
13:16Cowboys make a signing, Bobby?
13:18Yes, they did.
13:19So they've got a, they've got a new cornerback that they've signed.
13:23Austin, who, uh, is not basically all the, all you're going to get on the free agent
13:28market right now is guys who are without jobs for a reason, three weeks into the season.
13:32But Alex Austin is a guy who did start a couple of games for the Patriots last year
13:37has played over the last three years to started six games, played in 29, 600 snaps, uh, really
13:42good length.
13:43Um, I, I watched a little bit of him last night.
13:46Last year was a struggle, but, uh, I mean, his PFF grade for what's that for what that's
13:51worth, which not much, uh, 2024 and 2023, when he played the majority of his snaps, he
13:56had a 60 grade as a corner, which is pretty much just an average player.
13:59And Juanye Thomas as well.
14:01Juanye Thomas, who, uh, put out the bat signal, right?
14:03Yeah.
14:04I can't understand why he posted an AI image of him.
14:08Like he AI'd an image of him in a Cowboys uniform.
14:10It's like, you do have pictures of you playing for the Cowboys.
14:12You don't need to AI one.
14:14And you can just post that picture of you playing.
