00:00Tommy Yarsh on the Fan Cam, Twitch, and YouTube, brought to you by the Winstar World Casino and Resort.
00:05Proud to be the casino of the Dallas Cowboys.
00:07Please game responsibly.
00:09What did you think of that game last night?
00:11Wow, yeah, I was a little bit surprised.
00:14I didn't think that, you know, third-string quarterback, 38 years old, no offense to Case Keenum,
00:20he hadn't started a game, I think it was like 1,000 days, the broadcast said.
00:24And, you know, the Bears have been so lenient on their run game for success,
00:29they weren't able to get that going, and Keenum was just dealing.
00:32So that was good, it was fun to watch.
00:35And, yeah, I think what it told me the most, though, is that I think the NFC East is still
00:39pretty open.
00:40And I think it's good news for Cowboys fans to, you know, after a loss like they had on Sunday,
00:46there's, you know, nothing that can take away the pain from that, I'm sure.
00:50But I think that tells you that, hey, this division is still very much winnable for anybody,
00:55and Dallas is included in that.
00:57I'm sure Philadelphia will bounce back, too.
00:59But, you know, with Washington and New York are dealing with right now,
01:04I think the Cowboys still have a shot to win it.
01:06I guess we're in the minority.
01:07We like the J.J. McCarthy trade for the New York Giants, giving up a fifth-round pick.
01:12What do you think of it?
01:14I think it's low-risk, high-reward potential.
01:17You know, it's really going to put a test on Matt Nagy and all the guys that are over there,
01:22Brian Callahan, that, you know, hey, how good can you develop a quarterback, right?
01:27And, you know, this is a guy in McCarthy who's coming from one of the best quarterback developers,
01:32I feel like, in the NFL, in Kevin O'Connell.
01:35And for whatever reason, it just didn't work out there.
01:38So is there something different in their teaching style that maybe can click better with McCarthy in this system?
01:46Or is it something where they can find a way to maybe tap into what worked for him so well
01:52at Michigan
01:53and just really make the game easy for him?
01:56So I think that that's what you're looking at there for the Giants.
01:59We'll see how it ends up working out.
02:00I'm sure if it does, it'll take a couple weeks because you naturally just have to pick up a new
02:04scheme,
02:04a new playbook, and things like that.
02:06But, you know, this is a Giants team that's very physical, that they're leaning in on the front,
02:11and, you know, sometimes a quarterback doesn't really have to do a lot.
02:14And it's not a, you know, to say, hey, McCarthy's not good or he can't be good,
02:19but it can, you know, be a quarterback-friendly system for a guy like him.
02:23Did you take anything from Jerry?
02:25Yeah, I did.
02:26I think especially the end of that where you guys asked about a player that I can't talk about,
02:31but just the general overall, you know, temperature of the trade market,
02:35the fact that the Cowboys are feeling it out.
02:37You know, it's interesting to think about because there's kind of the double-edged sword, right,
02:43of you're so banged up in the secondary and you're down so many guys only three weeks into the season.
02:49You've got a couple of guys who are looking at multi-week injuries, and that's difficult.
02:53And then on the other side of the coin, you've got four draft picks next year.
02:57So, you know, you wonder how much capital you want to give up for any player at any position,
03:03not just limiting it to the secondary.
03:06But no surprise that, you know, there are conversations being had about potential moves,
03:11whether it be in the secondary or elsewhere, because, you know,
03:16I think this defense could still use some help.
03:19And even when guys come back healthy, I think they could still use some help.
03:22So we'll see if anything heats up here in the next couple of weeks about that.
03:26Dang, Tommy, you already got the article up at dallascowboys.com with Jerry talking about the trade market,
03:33and you put the radio station in, unlike Nick Eatman.
03:36Oh, that's good.
03:37Appreciate it.
03:38You're welcome.
03:39So you mentioned the lack of picks.
03:42Would you be more willing to overspend on future picks then to get somebody for this year?
03:51I would say it depends.
03:52Well, first of all, you never want to overspend on anything.
03:56I think you're always looking for the right kind of deal.
04:00But I think the better way to put it is how much wiggle room do you want to give yourself
04:04on?
04:05Or how long of a leash do you want to give yourself on?
04:07Okay, this is worth it because we feel like X player can win us X more games, right?
04:14I think that's ultimately the equation that it comes down to.
04:17But I think I would be willing to spend future capital if this team, they really feel like this is
04:25a competitive team.
04:26And I think that when you look at the way the division stacks out, and we just talked about it
04:30earlier,
04:30you might have a shot to win the division.
04:32So if you feel like, hey, we're in the division and when we get to the postseason, if we get
04:37healthy, we can maybe go on a run here.
04:39Then, yeah, I think that's when you could see some of those conversations heat up a little bit more.
04:44But depending on the player, yes, I would be willing to spend for someone that can help this year and
04:51beyond.
04:51Tommy Arsh from DallasGowboys.com joining us here on 105.3 The Fan.
04:55Tommy, I guess your overall thoughts on what was an insane just final 30 seconds of that game in Rio.
05:05Yeah, I'm scratching my head a lot.
05:08And, you know, I'm not a – there's a reason why this team does not pay me as much as
05:13they pay Brian Schottenheimer.
05:14So, you know, I may have my own opinions.
05:17A lot.
05:19A lot.
05:21But there's – and rightfully so.
05:23But there's a – you know, there's some choices that I maybe personally disagree with.
05:29Like, you know, I think first and goal from the two-yard line with the way that Javante Williams and
05:33the offensive line were playing,
05:34I thought the offensive line had – for the most part, there were a couple stuffs here and there,
05:38but for the most part they were leaning on the Ravens a little bit.
05:41All the momentum's going your way.
05:43I think you run the football on first and goal from the two.
05:46And, you know, if you let the clock run down a little bit, that's fine.
05:50You can keep the time out in your back pocket still.
05:52I think there was enough time to still do that.
05:56But there was just so many different things that you could have done there.
06:00I think, you know, the explanation, as frustrating as it may be from both sides, I think makes sense for
06:07the third and goal play.
06:08And from the one side of Brian Schottenheimer saying, yeah, I probably overcoached Prescott on that play
06:13and Dak saying, yeah, I should have waited half a tick longer to, you know, wait for Pickens to break
06:17for that pylon and make the throw.
06:20So, again, a lot of decisions that I'm sure Brian Schottenheimer – and he said it too, you know, he
06:25wants back and everybody wants back.
06:28But for it to happen that, you know, consecutively and then, of course, for defense to go the other way,
06:32that's just something that can't happen, and I think everybody in the building knows that.
06:36And the kick.
06:39And the kick out of bounds, yeah.
06:41That was another one where, you know, yeah, he's had the two dirty balls that end up taking a bad
06:48bounce.
06:48I think sometimes you just have to live with that.
06:51Of course, RJ just immediately smiles as soon as I say that.
06:54Two of them.
06:54Yeah, two of them.
06:56Like a longhorn.
06:58Yeah, sometimes you – yeah, hook them, by the way.
07:01Yeah.
07:02That's not the celebration you do for that.
07:04Nope, I'm not doing the other one.
07:06Yeah, which one?
07:08I'm leaving that up to whoever else wants to get penalized for it.
07:12But, no, I think that you sometimes just live with the bad bounces, right?
07:16But for it to happen twice in crucial situations, I don't think that prevented you from just,
07:23hey, we're going to treat this like a normal kickoff, boot it a mile in the air,
07:26but make sure it doesn't go into the back of the end zone and try to make him, you know,
07:30take it out so that we can run a couple more seconds off the clock.
07:34I think you heard what Minner said, too.
07:36I was listening to you guys earlier.
07:37Did he say that they might have just taken a knee if it was –
07:40Jesse Minner told Albert Breer that if they would have had to have returned the kick
07:43and run some time off, then they would have just knelt the ball.
07:46Okay, yeah.
07:47So, again, this is all easy to, you know, talk about in retrospect because, you know,
07:53for all we know in a different universe, they take the over route that Flowers ran
07:58and let the other route, you know, run the clock out.
08:00But still a very difficult, fortunate event to process for sure.
08:04Tommy Yarshtaus, Cowboys.com.
08:05I would like to know – I would like to hear Schottenheimer explain the Nick Sorensen discussion
08:10because there's zero doubt that Sorensen – like, they interacted with each other
08:16over what type of kickoff they're at the end.
08:19I would assume it's Schottenheimer, Feeder, and Sorensen that are involved in that kind of a discussion.
08:25I'd like to hear the operation of that discussion in terms of did Sorensen say,
08:29hey, let's this, let's that.
08:31Were they all on the same page?
08:32Who weighed in for what?
08:33How does it work?
08:34Did Schottenheimer immediately say, end zone, end zone?
08:37Did you make up your mind after Aubrey went out of bounds in the second one?
08:43Yeah, and Tommy, that's one of the things I'm curious about, too, with what you just said
08:47a few minutes ago.
08:47You said, I'm sure there are some of these decisions Brian Schottenheimer would like back.
08:51Obviously, in retrospect, with the way the game ended, you feel that way.
08:54But, I mean, are a lot of these things things that you think he's going to shift on
08:58or are they philosophical?
08:59Like, he's going to think they should throw the ball out of bounds most of the time.
09:03On that George Pickens route.
09:05He's going to think that they should approach play call in a certain way.
09:08Like, when we say we want him back, do we mean like he wants them back moving forward
09:13and it'll change his view of how to approach those situations?
09:16Or just in the moment, he obviously sees it didn't work?
09:20That's a good question.
09:21I think it's somewhere in the middle.
09:23All right.
09:24I think it's somewhere in the middle there.
09:27I don't know if this is going to have the long-term impact of saying, you know, first
09:33and goal from the two, Brian Schottenheimer is never going to throw the ball ever again.
09:37Like, the goal line fade route as, you know, people are on different sides of the fence
09:40of it.
09:40When you get in the red zone, do you do it?
09:42Do you not do it?
09:43I'll say that they worked on that play a bunch in training camp to Pickens, and he had some
09:46of his best plays in training camp off of that kind of play when they would do red zone work.
09:50So, I understand why he tried it in that situation.
09:53And, you know, so I'm not saying it's just a, you know, horrific decision.
09:57I don't think it is.
09:59But when it comes to the, maybe tweak the timing a little bit on that third and goal play
10:04of, hey, how immediate do you want to get rid of the ball here?
10:08Because they had, what, seven seconds, I think, on that last play or so, or maybe 14.
10:12So, you don't, you know, if the ball goes out of bounds, that's fine.
10:15Dak Prescott knows not to take a sack in that situation.
10:19So, you know, you can trust him to make the right decision.
10:22I'm not saying that Brian Schottheimer doesn't trust him.
10:24I think that would be ridiculous to say he doesn't.
10:28But I think you would see maybe small tweaks.
10:31I don't know if you would see a long-term, like, philosophical change of, you know, hey,
10:36we're never going to throw the ball again when we get into the goal-to-go scenario from
10:40the two-yard line.
10:41And then you've got two elite receivers, so you can absolutely do that.
10:44But I say they want some back just because, yeah, it's, like every game, you're going
10:49to have a couple of those that you want back.
10:51And you just make the tweaks going forward and see if they can work.
10:55What did you think about the field when you were inspecting it?
10:57Of course, that's every social media content creator dream is getting that field video
11:02that's going to blow up everywhere.
11:04And how was the rest of the trip?
11:06Was it like, were you glad to be back?
11:09Like, couldn't wait to get out of there?
11:10Or mind-blowing?
11:13Well, to start with the grass, I'm so glad that my field expert career is over, and I
11:18hope I never have to go through that again.
11:20But, yeah, I mean, look, it was okay.
11:24I wouldn't say it was great.
11:26It was okay.
11:28And I don't think it's...
11:29It's obviously unfortunate that so many players suffered injuries from it.
11:33And, you know, that's why you want to see better.
11:36And I'm not completely blaming that on the field.
11:38We don't...
11:39You know, you can't just definitively say that that's what caused everything.
11:42But you saw some guys slip here and there.
11:44So that's what, you know, didn't make it a great field.
11:49And I think that that is what it is.
11:51But I don't know if it had a...
11:55Like, I don't know if there was a game-changing, like, the field-ruined-it-for-everybody type
12:00of deal, but it certainly wasn't the best field that you could play on, and I think
12:04everybody would agree with that.
12:05As far as the trip itself, it was great.
12:07I really enjoyed it.
12:09It's a beautiful city, Rio de Janeiro.
12:11We didn't get to go out, of course, and that's fine.
12:13But, you know, the hotel we stayed at was great.
12:16Cowboys Operations did a really good job of taking care of us and making sure that everybody
12:20was, you know, doing everything that they needed to do and treated correctly.
12:24And the folks in Brazil were very kind and accommodating to us.
12:27So it was a really good time.
12:29And I slept on the flight.
12:31I was happy about that.
12:31I slept, and all of my neck pillows and weighted eye masks worked.
12:36So it all worked.
12:37Did Schottenheimer get you a better seat on the way back than you had going?
12:41He did not, and that's fine.
12:43Thank you, Thomas.
12:43We'll talk Thursday.
12:45All right, guys.
