00:00On this day in space. On April 25th, 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope was
00:06deployed. Hubble is famous for taking some of the most amazing deep space
00:10photos ever. It hitched a ride to space on the space shuttle Discovery with
00:14mission STS-31. Also on board were astronauts Charles Bolden, Lauren Shriver,
00:20Bruce McCandless, Stephen Hawley, and Katherine Sullivan. The crew used a
00:24Canadian-built robotic arm to deploy Hubble from the shuttle's cargo bay
00:27while they were orbiting 332 nautical miles above the Earth. No one knew it at
00:32the time, but Hubble wouldn't be taking any pretty pictures anytime soon. When
00:36Hubble took its first photos almost a month after it was deployed, the pictures
00:40were out of focus because of the flaw in its mirror. Thankfully the problem was
00:44fixable, and astronauts successfully repaired it in 1993. And that's what
00:48happened on this day in space.
