00:01Police stations like this one in Penrith in Western Sydney will start receiving firearms
00:06as part of the buyback from next Monday. Police stations at Sutherland, Norellon, Griffith,
00:12Grafton and also Dubbo, they'll all start receiving them as well from next Monday and
00:17they're taking bookings. This buyback is part of the response to the Bondi Beach terrorist attack
00:22with the Federal and State Governments arguing that the fewer guns there are out in the community
00:27the less chance that they could fall into the wrong hands. Now New South Wales Police are
00:31coordinating this buyback. They say they don't want people just randomly bringing weapons into
00:36police stations, they say they need prior warning. We've wanted to work through the process very
00:41clearly to make sure that when people are surrendering it's a smooth process for them as well.
00:45The reason that we have to have people go on the gun safe is so they can make a booking
00:50so that we
00:50can actually time them coming to the police station. There's then a process where we render the
00:54firearms that are surrendered safe, put them through a technology program that we have
00:59so we can confirm that the firearms that are being surrendered are actually registered to the
01:02person and then we have a fulsome destruction process as well.
01:07This buyback works hand in hand with proposed regulations that would limit most licence holders
01:12to four firearms and also give sporting shooters and farmers up to ten firearms.
01:18These plans have been quite unpopular with primary producers and some sporting shooters.
01:22Well now the state government says that people in those categories, sporting shooters
01:27and farmers, may be able to apply to police to keep more firearms if they have a genuine
01:33reason to do so. But the police minister denies this is any sort of back down.
01:38Absolutely not. This has been a very sensible approach, a very sensible way of responding to
01:45the worst terrorist attack that we have seen on our streets in this country.
01:52From early December up to 40 police stations will start receiving guns as part of this buyback.
01:57The state government thinks it could bring in more than 270,000 firearms.
