00:01Just a day before the federal government's deadline for states to adopt tighter gun laws,
00:07the Tasmanian government has revealed the changes it'll make.
00:10This is an important suite of reforms.
00:13It's all about getting the balance right,
00:15ensuring that we can get firearms out of the hands of terrorists and criminals.
00:19The Tasmanian government will introduce stronger penalties for firearms theft,
00:24restrict firearms licences to Australian citizens in most cases,
00:28and reclassify some firearms so there are more restrictions on owning them.
00:33It'll also conduct a buyback scheme, paying above market value for the reclassified firearms.
00:39In Tasmania, our firearms laws are already stronger than most states.
00:44Many of the changes that are being made in some of the other states are already law here in Tasmania.
00:50The reforms are generally in line with those proposed by the federal government
00:54in the wake of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.
00:56Only Tasmania won't have a limit on how many firearms a person can own.
01:01Tasmania have turned their back on that recommendation.
01:06They've ignored the public safety risk of allowing every firearm owner in Tasmania
01:12to have as many firearms as they want.
01:15We call upon the government to reconsider that and to introduce caps in line with what's happening in other states.
01:23I'm happy that a cap wasn't included because it would have achieved absolutely nothing.
01:28The test of any legitimate firearm owner is that they're a fit and proper person.
01:35Independent MP Peter George says he'll move in Parliament to introduce a cap.
01:39It's a ridiculous idea that people or an individual can own any number of guns.
01:45People don't need that many guns, not even if you're a firearms lover.
01:49The state government says it'll progress the law changes in Parliament this year.
01:53Yet, you know that theست of activity is somewhere out and out.
01:53I don't think of it as that.
