New South Wales police could be armed with higher powered firearms at major events like New Years' Eve as the premier warns nothing is off the table to keep the Jewish community safe. Chris Minns is even considering calling in the army to protect synagogues in the wake of the Bondi terror attack.

00:00These are not the sorts of guns New South Wales residents are used to seeing.
00:07But the state government is taking no chances this New Year's Eve.
00:10New South Wales police will be out in massive numbers,
00:14in some cases carrying firearms and weapons that you haven't seen before,
00:18but we judge is absolutely necessary.
00:21New Year's Eve celebrations in Bondi have been cancelled
00:24after the attack on Jewish Australians two weeks ago.
00:28But thousands of people will cram the Opera House forecourt
00:32to watch Sydney's world famous fireworks.
00:35I have spoken to a lot of parents and they would feel far more comfortable
00:39if there was a major police presence
00:41and that includes with the firepower that's required.
00:44It would be better but maybe children are scared about that.
00:51With a big gun, for me it's a bit too much.
00:57And it's not just police.
00:59The Premier's considering calling for troops to help guard Jewish synagogues and schools
01:04and arming the community's own security service, the CSG.
01:09Nothing's off the table, nothing's off the table.
01:11Despite the obvious police presence still at Bondi Beach,
01:15the government doesn't want people to be scared,
01:17calling on locals and tourists to come back to the beach and spend their money.
01:22Our local businesses were there for our community when we needed them.
01:27Now it is our turn to back our local businesses.
