00:00This is a question Ira Winderman got in the Sun Sentinel.
00:02We talked about it at the beginning of the show.
00:05Ira, it felt like a one-man team.
00:07Giannis Antetokounmpo and average players at best.
00:11What happened to elite defense?
00:13Bam Adebayo is extremely overrated.
00:16That last sentence was an opinion, not a question.
00:20I think it's a little overblown as well.
00:23Although, I told you at the beginning of the show,
00:24Bam got a lot of criticism today from Kendrick Perkins
00:27and from Stephen A. Smith on ESPN.
00:30This is what Ira said.
00:32From the get-go, the question was whether building around the interior
00:37was asking too much in today's perimeter-oriented NBA.
00:41So the opener wasn't about what Bam Adebayo is or isn't.
00:46It was about finding a way to make this roster work
00:49or finding a way to a roster that works.
00:54Bam is not an average player. He is above that.
00:56But is he the perfect complement to Giannis Antetokounmpo?
01:01That's what we have to figure out.
01:04That's what Eric Spolstra has to find out.
01:06Remember, Spolstra went through an either-or season
01:10with Dwayne Wade and LeBron James before figuring that out.
01:14The question is whether time can be on his side.
01:24The stars, the Batman and Robin thought.
01:27That's what people want to see.
01:29How good is this Robin?
01:30Because you look at the East, there's some Batmans
01:31and there's some Hellified Robins.
01:34We're going to have to play the phlegm montage on that one.
01:39That one is just too rough.
01:41Pardon us for a moment here while we celebrate Crowder's Fun.
01:45I'll just drink some coffee.
01:49He hasn't cleared his throat in 22 years.
01:53And every coach, he can still.
01:55Uh-oh.
01:56I mean,
01:57Remember, they have to be doing his thing lately.
01:59How's your phlegm?
02:01Alfredo sauce is his mouthwash of choice.
02:05Jack Daniels has always made whiskey,
02:07and if they have it their way, they always will.
02:10Uh-oh.
02:10And who cares if Tua goes home and...
02:12Uh-oh.
02:13Uh-oh.
02:13Legend has it, his phlegm is more dangerous than hot lava from a volcano.
02:18We were blaming it on injury.
02:20Oh, my goodness.
02:21I mean, that is...
02:22I mean, is someone waterboarding you?
02:25I almost died.
02:27Channing Crowder is the phlegmiest man in the world.
02:32And some of those...
02:34That was rough.
02:36I don't know where it came from.
02:38When you say you drank coffee just now, just the grounds?
02:43No.
02:44I drank a good Arabica Publish brand.
02:50Oh, look at you.
02:51Yeah.
02:52But today, all I had was air-fried lemon pepper wings, Twizzlers, salsa and chips.
02:58That's not phlegmy food.
03:00What kind of day is that?
03:03It's 4.06 in the afternoon.
03:05You had lemon pepper wings, Twizzlers, salsa and chips.
03:11Yeah.
03:12And coffee.
03:13Yeah.
03:14Yeah.
03:16That's what I'm just thinking about.
03:17What I consumed today, they created the phlegm.
03:19Those aren't food for phlegm.
03:23Wild menu.
03:24Throw in a couple zins, and he's like a frat boy.
03:27Right?
03:28Like, slept in, missed algebra today, had some chips.
03:32The throwback Natty Light with Ron Zook at about 1230.
03:37When I drop the kids off, come back, and Asia's still in the bed, you know, on her computer,
03:43working or whatever, and I get into bed at 9.06 a.m. with salsa and chips, she looks at
03:48me funny.
03:49Are you kidding me?
03:51Yeah.
03:51You got into bed at 9 this morning with salsa and chips?
03:55First of all, to eat salsa and chips in bed is, like, that's serial killer stuff.
04:01That's legitimately grounds for divorce.
04:04I don't even like eating salsa and chips at the table because it's so messy.
04:08I prefer to do it either at a restaurant or a ball game.
04:12Like, salsa and chips in bed?
04:15Yeah, because I didn't want to, because, like, breakfast food is normally, you know, high in fat.
04:20It's real fatty.
04:21Eggs are fatty.
04:22You know, bread, toast, pancakes.
04:24Breakfast food is fatty.
04:26Avocado toast is fatty.
04:29I had the blue corn organic chips, low-calorie.
04:34Salsa basically has no calories.
04:36That was a delicious low-calorie meal I ate for breakfast.
04:39It's fried, first of all.
04:40The chips are fried.
04:41No, no, they're baked.
04:43The organic brown, what is it, blue?
04:47Those blue chips are not baked.
04:49They are not baked.
04:50No, it's this brand I get.
04:52I get the blue corn chips.
04:54Go get it.
04:54I'll give you time.
04:55Go get them out of the pantry.
04:56In the mat bag?
04:58The one in the mat bag.
04:59Those are not baked.
05:01Aside from that, Ohak, as somebody who you know counts as macros, Crowder, it's low-calorie,
05:08but the serving size is five chips.
05:10And I know your fat ass didn't eat five chips.
05:13You ate 17 chips.
05:14He ate the bag.
05:1520 chips.
05:16No.
05:16You just put down 7,000 calories in chips.
05:19No, I eat salsa like soup, and I just use the chips as crackers.
05:23Do you keep the salsa in the salsa dish, or do you put it in a larger bowl?
05:28Oh, salsa.
05:29The holder.
05:31Just whatever it came in.
05:32The restaurant.
05:33Yeah.
05:33I mean, the store.
05:35Yeah.
05:35Why would I waste dishes to eat salsa?
05:37It's just only because it creates more crumbs.
05:39Like, I know, trying to fit the chip into the salsa, and then you're trying to get it
05:43to your mind.
05:44Like, oh, I can only imagine what your bed looked like this morning.
05:47Oh, I'm going to vomit.
05:50Nothing in the bed.
05:51There might have been some salsa streaks down my shirt, but I could just take a shirt off
05:55and change.
05:56Salsa and chips in bed at 9 in the morning is just, like, crazy weird, man.
06:04It's a life everybody wants to live.
06:06Yeah.
06:06Like, I was just thinking about the crumbs, Hawk, but he's, like, from the point where
06:11you dip the chip into the salsa, it runs.
06:14Yes.
06:14So now you've got to bring it up to your mouth.
06:16Yes.
06:16You're sitting in bed.
06:18I mean.
06:18There's stains all over his bed.
06:21What are you?
06:22Y'all's wrist shakes like an infant baby?
06:25I do have a shaky wrist when it comes to salsa and chips.
06:29I have noticed that.
06:30Salsa and chips, specifically.
06:32I have a very shaky wrist.
06:33You sit in my bed.
06:35I find myself getting the salsa and the chip, and then I bring my mouth in it instead of
06:40bringing it to my mouth.
06:42You know what?
06:43I have more body control than y'all.
06:45That's probably what it is.
06:47Get in the bed, bag of chips, and you still have the plastic container that it comes from
06:53the store, the salsa.
06:54You sit down back to the headboard so you're in an upright position.
06:58Bag of chips between your legs, right there by the crotch.
07:02A cup of salsa in your hand, right under your chin.
07:06Bag, salsa, bag, salsa, smooth sin.
07:11But then you get the salt on your fingers, and you want to kind of like do that with the
07:14salt that ends up in the bed.
07:16Oh, you lick your fingers.
07:18No, that's even worse.
07:20That is no good.
07:23No good.
07:23No good.
07:24What's greasier in the Crowder household, the frying pan or the remote control?
07:32Oh, you speak of that black thing with buttons on it?
07:36I haven't touched one of those in 18 years.
07:40Alana's the Taco Bell empanada plug around here.
07:43I just saw Paul walk in.
07:46Paul told me that Jimmy, because you know Paul's son, he's our sales manager, Paul's son plays
07:52football for St. Thomas.
07:54And they had a long rain delay this weekend.
07:59Now, you know, Jimmy is he's sports fan up and down and a huge St.
08:05Thomas fan.
08:06Paul told me the rain delay was past two hours.
08:12He stayed because his son plays for the team.
08:16And he goes, the game starts up again.
08:19There's Jimmy in the stands watching the game.
08:22Damn right.
08:23You waited out an over two hour rain delay, Jimmy.
08:26I did.
08:27Look at you.
08:27That's a real fan.
08:29That is.
08:29That's a real fan.
08:30I had time before the UM game, so I was good.
08:34No, listen.
08:35I mean, you're a supporter of your team.
08:37I love to see my school.
08:38I love to see it.
08:39Man, if UF has a two hour rain delay, I would be fed, drunk and sleep by the time that
08:44game
08:44started.
08:45I wouldn't even stick around watching that TV on my couch.
08:48I would be halfway into the house made and I'm not turning that off.
08:54Anyway, I was saying that I were wondering and said about the heat and, you know, people
09:01jumping on Bam today, like he's saying, hey, suppose figured this out before.
09:06Give him a chance to figure it out again.
09:08The question is, does he have the kind of time this time?
09:11He knew that they had a long time with LeBron.
09:15You thought LeBron and everyone was going to be here for a lot, even a lot longer than
09:20four seasons.
09:21There's some question about whether Giannis is here for more than one season.
09:26So that's the, that's going to be an overriding narrative throughout the season.
09:32And one thing too, quick, Solana, we, the offense was, we knew what happened with the
09:36offense.
09:36Bam, they couldn't score.
09:37We were eight for 33 from behind the line.
09:39So we understood the offense struggled.
09:41How the hell we let somebody score 130?
09:43Cause we're supposed to be this defensive juggernaut.
09:45That's crazy.
09:47Well, that's why I'm taking issue with people talking about Bam out of bio, Kendrick Perkins,
09:51Stephen A. Smith.
09:52I get it.
09:52By the way, that's the easy thing to do after yesterday.
09:55Hey, it was supposed to be Giannis and Bam.
09:57Bam didn't look like a number two.
09:59I understand that, but really that was not the defense that was promised yesterday.
10:03And if you noticed some of those threes, Lamello got, and some of those threes, Anthony Edwards
10:08got Bam and Giannis were playing drop coverage.
10:10So the screen is being set on those guys.
10:13Chris Finch figured it out and they're dropping on Ant and Lamello.
10:17They're not coming up to contest the shot.
10:19You're letting them take wide open threes.
10:21And if you have the two arguably best defenders in the NBA in terms of versatility, you can
10:26switch on to anybody.
10:27What the hell are you doing?
10:30Dropping in coverage, let Bam and Giannis come out and defend these guys one-on-one.
10:35That was the biggest concern.
10:37And if you think back to the last two years, Bam has had slow starts.
10:42Then in January, February starts to pick it up and the numbers start getting better and
10:46better.
10:46He doesn't have that time this year.
10:49You don't have the time to have a bad October, a bad November, an okay December, and then
10:54you pick it up in January.
10:56The East is too good this year, where if you suck in the first part of the season, you're
11:01going to end up in the playing tournament.
11:03So they've got to figure it out, man.
11:04I know it's one game, but they've got to figure that out.
11:07Defensively, that can't happen.
11:09That was absurd.
11:10And there's something in high school basketball or youth sports, if you're going to play like
11:16the number three guy in the nation, show out.
11:19Because there are going to be people there to see him, and you jump off the court, now
11:22your name's going to be on their list.
11:25Bam hasn't played with a MVP before.
11:28So people are coming to watch Giannis, and then they're going to see a Bam that's a good
11:32Bam or a bad Bam.
11:33The people that watched Bam last night, Giannis' Robin to his Batman, was not impressed by
11:38Bam's performance.
11:39Solana, I understand the sheet filler and the pick-and-roll defender.
11:43That is not impressive to a lot of people that casually watch basketball.
11:47Well, bottom line is Giannis had a great game, and he got no support anywhere, really.
11:52So you could do the context, well, this person needs to do that.
11:55Bam's not cut out for that.
11:56Like, if you're just looking at it generally, it's like, hey, where was Giannis' help?
12:01He did his part.
12:02Where was his help?
12:03And he just didn't get it last night.
12:05But my point is, Crowder, I understand what Kendrick Perkins and Stephen A. are doing.
12:10Those are the easy takes.
12:11Yeah.
12:12You look at the box score.
12:13It's correct.
12:14It's the take for someone who doesn't watch 48 minutes of every game, and the training
12:20camp, and the press conferences, and the media availabilities.
12:24But that's how most people watch basketball.
12:27Agreed.
12:27So that's how your opinions are formed.
12:30Agreed.
12:30And I get it because, you know, I don't watch the 76ers every game.
12:36And if I'm looking at the box score, they lose five straight.
12:39LeBron and Tyrese Maxey struggle.
12:41You say, hey, who's handling the ball over there?
12:43What's going on?
12:44When really there's more to it.
12:45Correct.
12:46My point is, defensively, that's where everything started yesterday.
12:49Because you're not able to run because they're not missing shots.
12:53And then you're basically just relying on Giannis in the half court to be Giannis onto the
12:57kumbo, and nobody else was knocking down shots.
13:00If they can actually not play drop coverage, contest those shots, they get those stops.
13:06Now Giannis is running with a full head of steam.
13:07I guarantee the offense, the process just looks better yesterday, and it didn't.
13:12There was a point in the post-game press conference where Spoh said, yeah, like, we were walking
13:16the ball up the floor, and at one point, guys are looking at me to call plays.
13:20What?
13:20Like, we didn't do that in preseason.
13:21We didn't do that all of last year.
13:23Why are you looking for me now to call?
13:24Like, go!
13:25What?
13:25Like, how could it look that bad, and it comes down to defensively, that team was not the
13:31team that they were supposed to be.
