00:24that we'll find Wes Goldberg.
00:26Always appreciate when Wes makes time for us.
00:28What's going on, buddy? How are you?
00:30I'm good. Happy end of the regular season and start of whatever's next.
00:34We made it again.
00:36We made it again, and now we're back in our traditional spot.
00:39We are all set for another visit to the plane.
00:44I guess we'll start here.
00:45What do you think you'll take from this season?
00:48Because people will say, hey, they're back in the same spot,
00:52the same spot, which is true.
00:54They finished with a better record than last year.
00:56There was obviously less chaos from a drama standpoint than last year.
01:01What do you think is going to be just, if you had to already write the old bit
01:05on this season today, what do you think you'll remember about this year the most?
01:11I think the general theme of this season is how the East has basically passed the Miami Heat by in
01:17total, right?
01:18We all know that stat that went around after the trade deadline that the Miami Heat were the only team
01:22to not make a trade in the Eastern Conference.
01:24But you look around the East, and you could actually say that every team in the East
01:29has a better outlook after this season than the Miami Heat.
01:33Maybe the only exception might be the Milwaukee Bucks, but we've got to see what they get for Giannis, right?
01:38But even their play-in peers, like Atlanta and Chicago, they have at least chosen a direction.
01:45Chicago taking a step back.
01:47Atlanta, what you could have argued maybe was a step back in trading Trae Young,
01:50actually took a step forward and looks like they put a real roster,
01:53and they're building something there.
01:55And you look at the rest of the league, or the rest of the conference, rather,
01:58and everybody kind of has that clear direction of where it is that they're going.
02:03And the Miami Heat, meanwhile, it's their fourth straight year in the play-in tournament.
02:08And to me, I just think that you're out of excuses if you're the Heat, right?
02:14Like, in years past, you could point to a Jimmy Butler injury against Philadelphia,
02:18or the Jimmy Butler trade last year, or injuries to top scorers during the regular season
02:24as to reason why you're in the play-in instead of an automatic bid to the playoffs.
02:27But four years is a really large sample size.
02:32And frankly, it's a larger sample size than the finals run in 2023 over a couple months in the playoffs.
02:38This is what this team is and has been, regardless of some of these moving parts and excuses.
02:43And I'll be really interested to see how Pat Riley characterizes this
02:48and kind of answers the same question you asked me at the end of this season,
02:51during his end-of-season press conference, because the excuses just have to stop.
02:55By the way, I think this team had a reason to think,
02:59Jimmy Butler thing behind us, let's build something, let's see what we're all about.
03:03This is what they're all about. They're all about the play-in.
03:06Yeah, I think the other thing that's odd about it, too, is you look back at this year,
03:10and I think that there were...
03:12I give them credit for doing some things differently.
03:17Like, I do say, all right, you knew the offense stunk,
03:20so you tried something a little gimmicky.
03:23I think there's probably a reason why teams don't play like this,
03:25because it seemed like it burned them out pretty quickly.
03:28And then they just had a foundational build problem,
03:32because Tyler and Norm just don't work.
03:35And they're both on personal goal timelines
03:39that don't necessarily help even the timeline of the Heat.
03:43So I'm curious to know what that decision is going to be from them.
03:48If they even both...
03:49Do you picture a world where either one of them are back next year?
03:54I can see them both coming back next year,
03:57which sounds crazy, but I mean,
04:00that's what this front office has done time and time again.
04:02And for the record,
04:03if you get Tyler Hero back on a manageable extension,
04:07and Norm Powell's also willing to take a manageable extension.
04:12At some point, you just say,
04:13well, these are two really good deals
04:15for the players that they are in a vacuum.
04:17I guess we'll just figure this out later.
04:18There's a way that you can kind of go about that.
04:20But ultimately, the Heat don't want to do that.
04:22That might be plan B, C, D, E.
04:25I don't know.
04:26I just wouldn't rule it out.
04:27In terms of the offense,
04:29look, they finished 12th in offense this year.
04:31It's the first time that they've been out of the bottom 10
04:33in offensive rating at the end of the season in four years.
04:36There is zero question that this gimmick offense worked.
04:40There's also zero question that it's a gimmick
04:42and it fizzled out towards the end of the season.
04:44And it never impacted them offensively.
04:46They finished over the last 20 games,
04:47they were top five in offensive rating in the league.
04:50They were one of the best teams in the league
04:52for a big portion of the season,
04:55one of the best scoring teams in the league.
04:56The problem is that their defense slipped to 25th
04:59over the last 20 games of the season,
05:00which if you're the Heat's front office
05:02and you're an exposter,
05:03you know that number and you're like,
05:04I don't care if we're first in offensive rating.
05:07We cannot be 25th in defense.
05:09That is not acceptable for the Miami Heat.
05:11And so I do think that we'll probably see
05:14a different kind of offense next year.
05:15Maybe there's elements of this,
05:17but you can't do this.
05:18They're the only team, Tobin,
05:20that consistently cracked five miles per hour
05:22on offense this season.
05:24NBA is tracking data.
05:27They keep track of how fast every team runs
05:30in the league on offense and on defense.
05:32And the Heat were the only team
05:34at the end of the regular season
05:35to average more than five miles per hour.
05:37That's how fast they run on offense.
05:40So that just means they were running faster
05:42than everybody else.
05:43And a lot of that is because of transition
05:44and stuff like that.
05:45They get in the open court.
05:46And then no team in the league outside of Indiana
05:50ran more miles than them all season long.
05:53And Indiana stinks.
05:54So it's not exactly like you could point to that stat
05:57and just be like, well, that's a winning stat.
05:58No, no, no, that's a losing stat.
06:00They're working too hard to do the same thing
06:02that these other teams are doing.
06:03And that's been the bigger problem,
06:04not just for the season,
06:05but in general for the Heat for a very long time.
06:07What did you think was the downfall these last weeks?
06:10I think back to a couple of games ago
06:13when Spoh was basically like,
06:16I've never been part of a defense like this
06:18because it was strange.
06:20Like they had that seven game win streak,
06:22middle of June.
06:23Feels like maybe all the possibilities are in front of them.
06:26Like just don't get embarrassed.
06:27And then like, they just,
06:29it was such an unraveling of the team.
06:32What the hell happened to the defense the last three weeks?
06:35I think you go back to that stat that I just pointed.
06:38I think they ran out of gas.
06:39I mean, you know, you and I watch every,
06:41every possession of these games.
06:42They were just getting blown by, right?
06:44It wasn't a schematic thing.
06:46It wasn't like the zone just stopped working
06:48or they weren't running it enough
06:50or they were running it too much.
06:51And, you know, Eric Spolstra,
06:53what was the quote that he said
06:54after one of those Toronto losses?
06:55He's like, we're plugging holes in a dam.
06:56And that's exactly what it was.
06:58I mean, the fact that they couldn't find
07:00a viable defensive lineup
07:02for a quarter of the season
07:05is very telling of where this roster is.
07:08Like the answers weren't on that roster.
07:10We could debate Kahlil Ware,
07:11start, bench, whatever, playing too much.
07:13Like the answers weren't on the roster.
07:15And eventually he did come to the conclusion that,
07:17okay, we have to start Kahlil Ware
07:18just because we need some size out there.
07:19We need some sort of defensive advantage.
07:21We have to stagger Hero and Powell
07:24like as if they're not even teammates.
07:26Like they'll never swear at the court together whatsoever
07:27because we can't afford a minute
07:29with those guys on the court together defensively.
07:31And so they came to some realizations
07:33by the end of the year
07:34and we'll see what it looks like
07:35in the playing tournament,
07:35maybe even in the playoffs,
07:36depending on how things play out.
07:38But in terms of why they got so bad defensively,
07:41all I could point to is
07:43I'm watching these games
07:44and they just look tired.
07:46The closeouts aren't as crisp.
07:47They're not closing out as quickly.
07:49They're getting blown by.
07:51And that's just,
07:52those are marks of tired teams.
07:54Yeah, it was interesting
07:55seeing everybody just root for a day off
07:57yesterday in the locker room.
07:58It was, wasn't it?
07:59Like that was one of the more,
08:00that was one of the craziest scenes
08:02and more entertaining scenes
08:02that I've been a part of in a locker room
08:04where everybody's just,
08:05it doesn't matter about the,
08:06it's the same opponent no matter what.
08:08It's just like, can we get
08:09after 82 grueling five months
08:11of this regular season,
08:13just one extra day off?
08:15Because remember, this was the team
08:16that wanted the entire week off
08:17and they couldn't even get that.
08:18So to try to get a day off
08:20and now they can't even get that,
08:21it's, it's gutting.
08:23Do you think when we,
08:24when they suit up tomorrow night
08:27or two or yeah, tomorrow night,
08:29do you think that Kalil well starts?
08:32Because Spoh had this whole thing
08:33about how important it is
08:34after the Wizards game
08:36that they want him more engaged.
08:38I thought he was fine yesterday.
08:39I didn't think like it was
08:40his greatest showing ever.
08:41He had the, he had the three ball going,
08:43but it was a bit of a weird game anyway.
08:44It doesn't matter.
08:45Um, but do you feel like
08:47they go into this however long
08:48the playoffs are with Kalil starting?
08:52I think so.
08:54I do think that this team
08:55has to understand
08:57what its ceiling is, right?
08:58Like, it's interesting to hear
09:00Steve Kerr talk about
09:01his Warriors team
09:02that's in the same spot
09:03in the Western Conference,
09:04the 10th seed in the play-in
09:05and just be like, yeah,
09:06we're still going to minutes limit
09:07Steph and Horford and Porzingis.
09:08Like, they just know,
09:09like, we're not,
09:10we're going to go out there
09:11and we're going to compete,
09:11but we're not going to,
09:12we're not going to do something
09:14bespoke for these games.
09:16And if Eric Spolstra
09:17and this front office
09:18believe that getting Kalil
09:20in that starting lineup
09:21for however many more games
09:22we have left here
09:23is important,
09:24then I think you do it
09:25no matter what the matchup is.
09:27And by the way,
09:28you could talk yourself
09:28into starting Kalil.
09:29I know people will look
09:30at Charlotte and say,
09:31hey, the size,
09:32the speed of the game
09:32might not be beneficial for Kalil.
09:34The Hornets are also
09:35number two in the league
09:36in defensive rebounding rate.
09:38Like, this is a really elite
09:39defensive rebounding team.
09:40And if you want to try
09:41to close in on that
09:42rebounding margin,
09:43which is going to be
09:44really important,
09:44then having Kalil out there
09:45does make some sense
09:46as a starter.
09:47Do you feel like
09:50this matchup against Charlotte,
09:51they've had success
09:52against them this year.
09:53I think the only game
09:53they lost was with them out,
09:56but they did have to
09:57shoot pretty crazy
09:57in that game where,
09:59you know,
09:59Charlotte was really rolling.
10:01How good do you feel
10:02about their opportunity
10:03to get out of the play?
10:05And do you,
10:05are you,
10:06is it a,
10:06what's your confidence level?
10:08So the Heat are three
10:09and one against the Hornets
10:10this season,
10:11but they're only one
10:12and one against these Hornets
10:13this season
10:14because two of those wins
10:15came in the first three weeks
10:16of the season
10:16before the Hornets
10:17figured out that they're good.
10:19And the Hornets
10:20over the second half
10:21of the season,
10:21like this is a real stretch.
10:22This is not just some team
10:23that's a hot shooting team
10:24over the last 15 games.
10:25No, no, they are,
10:26they are this team.
10:27They're not the team
10:28from the beginning of the year.
10:28And that's why I think
10:29Charles Lee deserves
10:30to be in the coach
10:30of the year conversation.
10:31Different topic.
10:34So one and one
10:35against this team,
10:35you mentioned the hot shoot.
10:36Tyler Hero had to go
10:37eight for 10
10:38from three point range
10:39in that win that they had.
10:40Now that's not,
10:41like it's Tyler Hero.
10:42We see that happen.
10:43Like that's totally
10:44within the cards,
10:45you know,
10:45in their own possibility.
10:46Whether Hero
10:47or Norm Powell,
10:48I think one of those guys
10:49is going to have to have
10:50that kind of shooting game
10:51and it's going to have to be
10:52a monster two-way BAM game.
10:53And when I say monster game,
10:54it doesn't mean
10:5530 points necessarily.
10:56It just means
10:5720 points,
10:5914 rebounds,
11:00a couple assists,
11:01maybe a block
11:02and just,
11:02you know,
11:02the total two-way
11:03masterpiece stuff
11:04that we see from BAM.
11:06And then obviously
11:07some contributions
11:07from other players,
11:08but confidence level,
11:10I mean,
11:12this Hornets team
11:12is playing really well.
11:14It's already the team
11:14that the Pistons
11:16don't want to see,
11:17you know what I mean,
11:17in that first round.
11:19On the road,
11:20I'll give the Heat
11:21a 36.2% chance.
11:26That's not great, dude.
11:28Feels like it should be better.
11:29For a team that
11:30owns the play-in tournament,
11:31the play-in Kings, right?
11:32Isn't that what Tyler Hero
11:33called them the other day?
11:34Well, I believe he stole that from me.
11:36I called them the play-in Kings.
11:37It's a play-in-ville all season.
11:38But if, you know,
11:39if Tyler Hero wants to take it,
11:40I'll allow him to take it
11:41because it is true.
11:45But, yeah,
11:46it's one of these things
11:47and I kind of understand
11:48where everybody's at.
11:49Like, you know,
11:50Spoh even kind of went
11:52into maniac mode yesterday
11:53where he's like,
11:53it makes you feel alive.
11:54I'm like, does it?
11:55You know, like,
11:56you remember how, like,
11:57they felt last year
11:58he was doing that whole thing
11:59after, like,
11:59you should have been
12:00on that plane ride
12:00back from us winning the play-in
12:02and then you got your heads
12:04lopped off by the Cavaliers.
12:06Even if they win two,
12:07like, are they going to get,
12:08they're going to get destroyed
12:09by Detroit?
12:10Or do you,
12:10are you like one of these,
12:11like, Detroit's kind of vulnerable?
12:13I've been on the,
12:14no, I've been higher on Detroit
12:16than most people all season long,
12:17not even knowing that
12:18this could have been
12:18a potential playoff matchup.
12:19I just think that that team
12:20is tough as nails
12:21and we can nitpick
12:22every team in the,
12:23in the East
12:23and people tend to nitpick
12:25Detroit more.
12:26I guess maybe it's just
12:26because we haven't seen them
12:27in the playoffs as much,
12:28even though they,
12:28they got to the second round
12:30last year against,
12:30they played well last year.
12:32So, first round,
12:33first round,
12:34thank you, Vlad.
12:34But they played,
12:35they pushed the Knicks,
12:36almost made it to the second round.
12:39But, you know,
12:40their defense is awesome.
12:42They're turning teams over
12:43at a rate that is equivalent
12:44to what the Thunder
12:45turned teams over at last year.
12:47And yet,
12:47we always talked about
12:48how you can't get the ball
12:49across the half court
12:49against the Thunder.
12:50The Pistons are doing
12:51that same thing
12:52and that helps power
12:53their offense.
12:54They're a really good
12:54rebounding team.
12:55And with Cade
12:56having missed some time,
12:58they were getting
12:58real contributions
12:59from guys like
13:00Dennis Jenkins.
13:00Our friend Duncan Robinson
13:01was unlocked as a playmaker
13:03a little bit more for them.
13:04Jalen Duren is going to be
13:05an all-NBA guy
13:06and deserves it, right?
13:08Like, he's not just a
13:10rim-rolling big guy.
13:12He is a rim-rolling big guy,
13:13but he also has a face-up game
13:14and actually has some
13:15dribble handoff chemistry
13:16with Duncan,
13:16which makes Heat fans
13:17jealous probably.
13:18But, yeah,
13:20that's a legitimate team
13:21is my point.
13:22And we can nitpick
13:23some of the shooting stuff
13:24with them,
13:24but like I said,
13:25every team in the East
13:26has something that you can nitpick.
13:27And one thing I know
13:28about the Pistons
13:28is they're going to come out
13:29and they're going to be
13:30more physical
13:31than everybody else.
13:32And that includes
13:33the Miami Heat,
13:33who we just talked about
13:35don't seem to have
13:35their legs under them
13:37right now.
13:37So you feel like
13:38the best thing,
13:39honestly,
13:39for the long term
13:40is probably just like
13:42get your asses kicked
13:43and then that really
13:45will force them
13:45into evaluating
13:47the organization
13:48and maybe actually
13:49doing some wholesale stuff
13:51around 601 Biscayne Boulevard.
13:54Yeah,
13:54this is kind of a topic
13:56that we keep
13:57circling back to
13:58on Locked on Heat
13:58is sort of like
13:59what's the best result
14:01of the season.
14:01Like,
14:02look,
14:04it's the Miami Heat.
14:05If you want to root
14:05for a playoff
14:07showing appearance,
14:08like,
14:09I get it, man.
14:09Like,
14:10that's,
14:10the Heat make the playoffs.
14:11If you want to extend
14:12your season,
14:12you're not ready
14:13for off-season content,
14:14you're not ready
14:14to start talking about it,
14:15I get it.
14:16The NBA playoffs
14:16are long
14:17and to not be a part
14:18of it at all
14:19is a drag.
14:20It's a total drag.
14:21But,
14:23you make the playoffs,
14:24you don't have a chance
14:24at the lottery,
14:25right?
14:25The odds of
14:27lightning striking
14:28twice in two years
14:30and kind of having
14:31that Cooper flag thing
14:31happen where Dallas
14:32moved up from 11 to 1,
14:34it's a long shot,
14:35but,
14:36you know,
14:36you lose in the play
14:37and you end up
14:37with a 7% or a 5% chance
14:38depending on where
14:39things fall
14:40at a top 4 pick.
14:42That's not nothing,
14:44right?
14:44And if you make
14:44the playoffs,
14:45it is nothing.
14:45So,
14:46maybe you can traffic
14:47and hope a little bit
14:48if you're a Heat fan
14:48in that until the lottery
14:50actually happens
14:50and then at that point,
14:52I don't know,
14:52you're talking about
14:52a little bit of a better
14:53draft pick if that's
14:54what you want to do.
14:55But to me,
14:56I come back to what
14:57you just said,
14:57Tobin,
14:58it's if you make
14:59the playoffs again,
15:01does this front office
15:01be like,
15:02or one bounce away
15:03from blah,
15:04blah, blah,
15:04whatever?
15:05I almost feel like
15:06this team needs
15:07to be embarrassed
15:07to the point
15:08where they change
15:09their behavior
15:09because we've heard
15:10time and time again,
15:11they're not going
15:12to make change
15:12for change's sake.
15:13Well,
15:13sometimes you do need
15:14to make change
15:14for change's sake
15:15and maybe just sort of
15:17mixing up the snow globe
15:18here and seeing
15:18if things fall
15:19a different way
15:20in the offseason
15:21might be the right way
15:21to approach things,
15:23but it just feels like
15:24there has to be
15:25some sort of
15:26different kind of result
15:27to elicit
15:27different behavior.
15:29One more before
15:30I get you out of here,
15:30we got talking
15:31to Wes Goldberg,
15:32host of Locked on Heat,
15:33Locked on NBA as well
15:34and Real GM Radio.
15:35You guys can catch
15:36a lot of his coverage
15:37this entire playoffs as well,
15:39even if the Heat
15:39do get their asses
15:40kicked early
15:40and he'll be there
15:42through the offseason
15:42as well.
15:43But one thing
15:45I am keeping my eye
15:46and I am intrigued by
15:47is what is Bam's
15:48reaction to all this?
15:49He has had one of his
15:50best individual seasons,
15:52obviously,
15:52the 83-point game,
15:54but he is going
15:55to be 30 this offseason
15:56and he is looking
15:59at all of his peers
16:00and thinking that
16:01they've had more success,
16:02but he is Mr. Heat.
16:03I think he's 50 or so
16:04rebounds from passing
16:05Udonis Haslam.
16:07Do you think
16:08there's any chance
16:09that he makes us
16:09think this offseason
16:10and thinks about
16:11other options?
16:12No,
16:13but I was really curious
16:15about his postgame
16:17presser last night
16:18and sometimes
16:19I don't stick around
16:20for Bam's comments
16:21because he takes his time
16:22postgame, right?
16:23He gets all his body
16:24work done.
16:24He just really takes
16:25his time.
16:25Sometimes I just
16:26I'm going to go record
16:27the show.
16:27I got to get this thing
16:28out.
16:28But last night I made
16:29sure to stick around
16:30because I did wonder
16:31is there is he going
16:32to pull a Dwayne Wade
16:33type of I'm sick of this.
16:34I don't want to do
16:35this anymore type of
16:35moment and he didn't
16:37do that.
16:37He kept things focused
16:39on the play in tournament
16:39which I understand.
16:40It's totally the Bam
16:41thing to do.
16:42We'll see what that
16:43postgame press conference
16:44looks like if and when
16:45they're eliminated,
16:46right?
16:46Like well,
16:46maybe that's the right
16:47time to tune into that
16:48but I did have my
16:50antennas up.
16:50He didn't do any of that
16:52but I do wonder like Bam
16:53is close friends with
16:55Jason Tatum and Tatum
16:56misses three-fourths of
16:58the season comes back
17:00to a team that's second
17:00in the East and I just
17:01you know Bam is thinking
17:03in some part of his
17:04body not to speak for
17:05him but like he knows
17:07if he leaves for 10
17:09games Miami season is
17:11over and he's probably
17:13looking at his buddy
17:13Tatum is like look at
17:14your supporting cast.
17:15They were able to carry
17:16you and Britain and and
17:18and make sure that the
17:19team was viable for
17:20when you came back and
17:21now that is a team that
17:22has a legitimate chance
17:23to make the NBA finals
17:24despite the fact that
17:25Tatum missed as much
17:26time as he did.
17:26He definitely looks
17:27around the league looks
17:28at what his peers are
17:29dealing with and he
17:31should and I do wonder
17:32if like I don't think
17:34he's gonna cause a stink
17:35in the terms of get me
17:36out of here but he has
17:38earned enough respect in
17:42that building at this
17:43point where he could go
17:44to the front office and
17:45say something's got to
17:47change like it's you
17:49didn't get my guy Damian
17:50Lillard you didn't get my
17:51guy Donovan Mitchell even
17:52though Donovan Mitchell
17:52depending on how the
17:53playoffs he might be an
17:54option again this summer
17:55he's extension eligible
17:55we'll see DVD but go get
17:58me a guy man like come
17:59on I scored 83 points in
18:02a game I know that was
18:04like where's my pal
18:05Gasol the only thing
18:06good on the on the
18:07tombstone of the season
18:08was that night against
18:09the Wizards does it feel
18:11a little less than like
18:15wouldn't it have been
18:17better and more impactful
18:18had that kind of sparked
18:20this great run into the
18:22playoffs and the here
18:23sitting here as a five
18:24seed I think it would
18:25have if I didn't know
18:27that it wasn't on him
18:29and I you know I just
18:30think that the the the
18:31mess of hero and pal
18:33just not working and
18:34just being a disaster
18:35because that's what it
18:36was you know that's not
18:38intentionally like look I
18:39appreciate them going to
18:40get Norman Powell he was
18:41an all-star this year but
18:42that just didn't it just
18:43didn't work and they they
18:48went through this entire
18:49thing like trying to make
18:50feelings good for them and
18:52then seemingly pissed off
18:54Norman Powell by the end of
18:55it so that didn't even
18:55work so it was just such
18:57a disaster between them
18:58both I'm never going to
18:59take away from the year
19:00that this was an
19:01incredible out of bio
19:02season that crashed and
19:04burned but I don't I
19:05don't put it on him I
19:07know like I'm sure he has
19:08to wear it because he's
19:09the max guy and that's
19:09the responsibility but
19:10let's be real like that's
19:12it we know why that
19:13happened you know it's
19:15starting to feel like
19:15those two years before
19:16the big three for Dwayne
19:18where he was just like
19:19trudging along and even
19:20that last year was a 48
19:21win heat team this one is
19:23so 43 listen is stuff if
19:25not for the playing
19:26tournament we're talking
19:26about the end of the
19:27season last night yeah and
19:29over 13 against three
19:30teams in the east like
19:31it's there are some
19:33embarrassing things on it
19:34for sure but even with
19:36band kid there 83 is 83
19:38you know 83 is 83
19:39100% I'll always have that
19:41that's the only thing I
19:42have it's the only flickering
19:43light I have on the season
19:44was that and a top four
19:46pick in this draft right
19:47that'd be good I would like
19:48that all right buddy go
19:50follow us Goldberg's work
19:51locked on heat locked on
19:52NBA he does a fantastic
19:54job and always appreciate
19:56when it makes time for us
19:56thank you buddy thanks
19:57guys
