00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when standing before Pilate, kept silent at all the unjust
00:34accusations and slanders of the Jews, and as a gentle lamb that did not open its mouth, did not contradict
00:42them when they brought forward their charges against you.
00:46Give me grace never to be disturbed by the false accusations of others, but may I overcome every injury by
00:53silence and meekness.
00:55Give me the grace of perfect humility, so that I may never desire praise nor refuse any measure of contempt.
01:04Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, you, lamb without spot, against whom the pious Pharisees and scribes
01:14raged with obstinate hatred.
01:17For although Pilate testified that he found no cause of death in you, yet they would not be satisfied with
01:24anything except your death.
01:28Grant me grace to imitate your innocence and patience, that I may both lead a godly life, and for so
01:36doing, if I am spoken of evenly, that I may remain at rest in you, giving way to no indignation,
01:45but giving thanks to you in all adversity.
01:50Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who will lead in the greatest of indignity, in the manner
01:59of a wicked criminal, through the middle of the city, from one judgment seat to another, and from Pilate to
02:06Herod and back again, amidst the noise and shouts of the people.
02:11Give me grace never, nor to be exasperated by slander, nor to be exasperated by slander, may I never feel
02:20any false shame at being despised, but may I receive everything in meekness, and endure all things in silence for
02:28your honor, that, by the assistance of your grace, I may in patience possess my soul.
02:36Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when Herod asked you many vain and foolish questions, and
02:44when you were falsely wounded in different ways by priest and scribe, humbly kept a meet and becoming silence.
02:53Give me grace to restrain my tongue in a manner well-pleasing to you, do not permit me to utter
03:00hurtful words, do not permit me to be taken up with fruitless stories, but give me grace to say what
03:07is right, profitable, and honest, according to your will.
03:12May I behold the sin of evil speaking, and be always glad to think and speak well of any man.
03:23Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who condemned by your silence the foolish curiosity of Herod, and
03:31who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of any miracle, because he did not have his own
03:39salvation at heart,
03:40and did there in this way teach us to avoid all ostentation before the great ones of this world, pour
03:50into my heart a spirit of deep humility, mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory.
03:58Grant that I may never do anything in order to gain praise of man, but may always act with a
04:04single eye upon the glory of your most holy name, and may come before you day by day in a
04:11true spirit of humility and meekness.
04:17Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who did not refuse to be set to nothing by Herod
04:24and his men of war, nor to be clothed in a white garment, and to be mocked and laughed at
04:29as though a fool and a madman.
04:32Give me grace, O Lord, to choose rather to be an outcast with you than to be glorious in the
04:38world.
04:39May I think it better and more honorable to suffer reproach for your name than to prosper in the vain
04:46honors of the world.
04:49Give me grace that, truly acknowledging my own sins and my own unworthiness, I may be as nothing in my
04:56own sight, but may always despise and accuse myself and daily lament over my own weakness and wretchedness.
05:06Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who was sent back with shame, clothed in a false garment,
05:12from Herod the Pilate, and in all things obeyed your enemies going backwards and forwards according to their pleasure.
05:20Grant that I may not shrink from being despised, nor refuse obedience even to those who wish nothing but bad
05:29for me.
05:31Give me grace to have no feelings for the things of this world, but to think of and care for
05:36and love you alone.
05:39May you alone be my honor, my delight, my love, my glory, and my joy. Amen.
05:50O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:02O be joyful in the Lord, O be joyful in the Lord, O be joyful in the Lord, O be
06:09joyful in the Lord, O be joyful in the Lord.
06:09Turn the Lord with gladness, and come in all his presence with your song.
06:19Be sure that the Lord, he is God.
06:25O Lord, we will sing your praise.
06:31O God, O be you shall be joyful in the Lord, is lovingly humph RED Iプ.
06:38O do your way to this beat with thanksgiving, and into this God's great praise.
06:49We thank God to him and speak to the Lord of his name.
06:58For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting.
07:20Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning,
07:35is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
08:02Amen.
08:03Amen.
08:04Amen.
08:13Amen.
08:14Amen.
08:23Amen.
08:25Amen.
08:29Amen.
09:00And my heart within me is desperate, yet do I remember the time past, I use upon all my wounds.
09:17May I exercise myself in the words of my hands.
09:27I stretch forth my hands unto thee.
09:33My soul gaspeth unto thee, as of thusly land.
09:41Hear me, O Lord, and that soon, draw my spirit waxed plate.
09:51Hide not thy face from me, lest I be lying unto them that go down into the pit.
10:02O let me hear thy lovingkindness be tight in the morning, for in thee is my trust.
10:15Show thou me the way that I should hold him, for I lift up my soul unto thee.
10:27Give me the way, O Lord, from my heaven is, for I lean unto thee to hide me.
10:44Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth me, for thou art my God.
10:52Let thy loving spirit lead me forth, into the land of righteousness.
11:03Quicken me, O Lord, for thy name's sake, and for thy righteousness' sake.
11:12Bring me, bring my soul out of trouble, and of thy goodness' sake, my heaven is.
11:23And destroy all them that bears my soul, for I am thine servant.
11:39Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning,
11:55His love and ever shall be, world without ever shall come.
12:28A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, chapter 16.
12:34Jesus said to his disciples,
12:36There was a rich man who was informed of accusations that his manager was wasting his assets.
12:43So he called the manager in and said to him,
12:46What is this I hear about you?
12:48Turn in the account of your administration,
12:51because you can no longer be my manager.
12:56Then the manager said to himself,
12:58What should I do, since my master is taking my position away from me?
13:03I'm not strong enough to dig, and I'm too ashamed to beg.
13:08I know what to do, so that when I'm put out of management,
13:13people will welcome me into their homes.
13:17So he contacted his master's debtors one by one.
13:20He asked the first,
13:22How much do you owe, my master?
13:24The man replied,
13:25One hundred measures of olive oil.
13:29The manager said to him,
13:31Take your bill, sit down quickly and write fifty.
13:35Then he said to another,
13:37And how much do you owe?
13:39The man replied,
13:41A hundred measures of wheat.
13:44The manager said to him,
13:45Take your bill and write eighty.
13:50The master commended the dishonest manager,
13:52because he acted shrewdly.
13:54For the people of this world
13:56are more shrewd in dealing with their contemporaries
13:58than people of the night.
14:01I tell you,
14:02make friends for yourselves
14:04by how you use your worldly wealth,
14:06so that when it runs out,
14:08you will be welcomed into the eternal home.
14:12The one who is faithful in a little
14:14is also faithful in much.
14:16And the one who is dishonest in a little
14:18is dishonest in much.
14:21If then you haven't been trustworthy
14:23in handling worldly wealth,
14:25who will entrust you with true riches?
14:29If you haven't been trustworthy
14:31with someone else's property,
14:33who will give you your own?
14:36No servant can serve two masters,
14:39for either he will hate the one
14:41and love the other,
14:42or he will be devoted to one
14:44and despise the other.
14:45You cannot serve God and money.
14:50The Pharisees,
14:52who loved money,
14:53heard all this and ridiculed him,
14:55but Jesus said to them,
14:57You are the ones who justify yourselves
14:59in men's eyes,
15:00but God knows your hearts.
15:02For what is highly prized among men
15:04is utterly detestable in God's sight.
15:08There was a rich man
15:10who dressed in purple and fine linen,
15:12and who feasted sumptuously every day.
15:16But at his gate
15:17lay a poor man named Lazarus,
15:19whose body was covered with sores,
15:21who longed to eat
15:22what fell from the rich man's table.
15:25In addition,
15:26dogs came and licked his sores.
15:30Now the poor man died
15:31and was carried by the angels
15:32to Abraham's side.
15:35The rich man also died
15:37and was buried
15:37in hell as he was in torment.
15:40He looked up
15:41and saw Abraham far off
15:42with Lazarus at his side.
15:44And so he called out,
15:46Father Abraham,
15:48have mercy on me
15:49and send Lazarus
15:50to dip the tip of his finger
15:53in water
15:53and cool my tongue,
15:55because I am in anguish
15:57in this fire.
15:59But Abraham said,
16:02Child,
16:02remember that in your lifetime
16:04you received your good things
16:06and Lazarus likewise bad things.
16:09But now he is comforted here
16:11and you are in anguish.
16:15Besides all this,
16:16a great chasm
16:17has been fixed between us,
16:19so that those who want
16:20to cross over from here
16:21to you cannot do so,
16:23and no one can cross over
16:24from there to us.
16:27So the rich man said,
16:29Then I beg you,
16:30Father,
16:31send Lazarus
16:33to my father's house,
16:34for I have five brothers
16:35to warn them
16:37so that they don't come
16:38to this place of torment.
16:40But Abraham said,
16:42They have Moses
16:43and the prophets,
16:44they must respond to them.
16:47Then the rich man said,
16:49No, Father Abraham,
16:51but if someone from the dead
16:52goes to them,
16:52they will repent.
16:54He replied to them,
16:56If they do not respond
16:58to Moses and the prophets,
16:59they will not be convinced
17:01even if someone
17:02rises from the dead.
17:05This is the word of the Lord.
17:08Thanks be to God.
17:14On the surface,
17:16this appears to be
17:17a fairly simple parable,
17:19but there is a depth here
17:22which is useful for us
17:23to consider.
17:25It concerns a steward
17:27who was interested
17:28with managing
17:28his master's business,
17:30and it is necessary
17:31for us to compare
17:33his position
17:33with that of our own,
17:35for we are also stewards
17:37of our master's business,
17:39the world in which we live.
17:42The word had reached
17:44the master
17:44that his steward
17:45was not acting
17:46in the way he should
17:47in the discharge
17:48of his responsibilities.
17:51We do not know
17:52if this was fraudulent,
17:54but the implication here
17:55is that he was lazy.
17:58In any event,
17:59he was losing
18:00his master's money steadily,
18:02and he had been fanned out.
18:05Mankind,
18:06the steward of God
18:07on earth,
18:08is both fraudulent
18:09and disobedient.
18:11We like to line
18:13our pockets
18:13at God's expense,
18:15perhaps not intentionally,
18:17but we look for ways
18:18to enrich ourselves
18:19at the expense
18:20of others,
18:21and we squander
18:22things that we have
18:23been given.
18:25As a result
18:26of this discovery,
18:27the steward
18:28was given notice,
18:29his employment terminated,
18:30and he was called
18:32to give an account
18:33of himself.
18:36Likewise,
18:37our criminality,
18:38and there's no better
18:39way of putting it,
18:41has come to God's notice,
18:42and we have all
18:43had our contracts
18:44terminated.
18:46We are all on notice
18:47of dismissal
18:48by death,
18:49following the sin
18:50of Adam and Eve.
18:54We then know
18:55a little of the nature
18:56of this man,
18:57and again,
18:57he is much like us.
18:59He does not know
18:59what he can do.
19:02He claims he cannot
19:03dig,
19:04and he is too
19:04proud to beg.
19:07If his master
19:08had put him to dig,
19:09then most certainly
19:10he would have done.
19:12He was just too lazy
19:13to break a sweat
19:14at anything.
19:16If,
19:17through God's workings,
19:18we find ourselves
19:19in poverty,
19:20why should we
19:21be ashamed to beg?
19:24If we brought
19:25the situation
19:25upon ourselves,
19:26why are we so clever
19:28that we cannot beg?
19:32God is teaching us
19:33humility,
19:34there is nothing
19:35to be ashamed of.
19:38The result was
19:40that,
19:40for the first time
19:41in a long time,
19:42the man went off
19:43and used his talents
19:44to order,
19:44in order to make
19:45some money
19:46for his food.
19:48In the same way,
19:49when we are on notice
19:50of the termination
19:51of our worldly contracts,
19:52we ought to be making
19:53the best of our remaining
19:54time here
19:55to better
19:56our spiritual situation.
19:59We need to remember
20:00that it is never too late
20:01until the bell
20:03strikes the hour.
20:05Any little thing
20:06we can scrape through
20:07before that time
20:08will make our situation
20:09that much better.
20:13We are told
20:14that we are called upon
20:15to give a good
20:15account of the things
20:16that we have been
20:17given in this world,
20:18to earn the respect
20:19of others
20:20through our husbandry,
20:22not by being mean
20:24and uncharitable,
20:25but through kindness
20:26and the use of
20:27common sense.
20:30It is one thing
20:31to give a hundred
20:31pounds to charity,
20:33and something
20:33completely different
20:34to throw away
20:35a thousand pounds
20:36on something
20:36of no benefit
20:37to anyone.
20:41If we can earn
20:41the trust of people
20:42in the little things
20:43in this life,
20:44then we will earn
20:45trust in the bigger
20:46things of the next.
20:49We are reminded
20:50that regardless
20:51of how much
20:52or little
20:52we may have
20:53in this world,
20:54we may only serve
20:55our Lord God.
20:57What we have
20:58is His,
20:58and is given to us
20:59to use wisely
21:00on His behalf.
21:02We must love Him
21:03and not the things
21:04He has chosen
21:04to give us.
21:06We must remember
21:07that the things
21:07we have in our
21:08position are not
21:09ours,
21:10but belong to
21:11our Master,
21:12who has made us
21:13responsible for them.
21:15Let us then
21:16be true stewards
21:17of God.
21:22Then we come
21:22to the account
21:23of the rich man
21:24who died
21:24and went to hell,
21:25and the miserable
21:26beggar Lazarus
21:27who went to heaven.
21:30Enduring his
21:31torture in hell,
21:32the rich man
21:32sees Lazarus
21:33resting with Abraham
21:35in heaven,
21:35and begs that
21:36Lazarus
21:37be allowed
21:37to give him
21:38a tiny drop
21:39of water.
21:40Such is
21:41his sufferer.
21:43You get the impression
21:45that Lazarus
21:45was known
21:46to the rich man.
21:48Perhaps he used
21:48to beg at his door.
21:50But it is clear
21:51that the rich man
21:52did nothing for the beggar,
21:53for he lived
21:54on whatever scraps
21:55he could find.
21:57There is no evidence
21:59at all
21:59that the rich man
22:00never showed a job
22:01of compassion
22:01for Lazarus.
22:03But now
22:04with the tables
22:04turned,
22:05he wants Lazarus
22:06to come
22:06and wait
22:07upon him.
22:10Abraham
22:11rebuked
22:11the rich man,
22:12telling him
22:13that he had
22:14had his time
22:14of pleasure
22:15when he was
22:15on the earth.
22:17He had wealth,
22:18and all the trappings
22:19that money could buy,
22:21never giving a thought
22:22for those
22:22who had nothing.
22:24Now that he had
22:25nothing,
22:28Lazarus,
22:29on the other hand,
22:30had lived
22:30the life
22:30of destitution,
22:32having nothing
22:33and living
22:33from one scrap
22:34to another.
22:36Now he had
22:37everything.
22:39So what was
22:39so unfair
22:40about this situation?
22:45Again,
22:45the rich man
22:46begs Abraham
22:47to send Lazarus
22:48to warn his brothers
22:49to mend their way.
22:52Abraham pointed out
22:54that the scriptures
22:55were full of prophets,
22:56doing just that,
22:57and they were ignored.
22:59Even if they saw
23:00a dead man
23:00come back to warn them,
23:02they would ignore him.
23:07This is a potent message
23:08for us today.
23:10We have it all.
23:12Do we not have food
23:13at home?
23:15Many of us
23:16jet off around the world
23:18on holiday.
23:20However,
23:21there are so many of us
23:22here
23:22who have nothing at all.
23:25How often do we
23:26spare them
23:26even a thought,
23:27let alone anything else?
23:29Just as the rich man
23:31was caught up
23:31in his selfishness,
23:33so are we
23:34with our own
23:34little worlds.
23:36We have no time
23:37for God
23:37and his inconvenient
23:38message of love
23:40for our neighbour,
23:41our fellow man,
23:42the broken,
23:43bleeding man
23:44at the side
23:45of the road
23:45left for them.
23:48Why not set aside
23:50this year
23:51the money
23:52that we would spend
23:53on our holiday
23:54and give it
23:55to the poor?
23:58It will not cost us
23:59anything,
24:00for we have
24:01what we need,
24:03but the poor
24:04never have
24:05what they need.
24:08Let us remember
24:09to have compassion
24:10for the unfortunate
24:11as well as our friends,
24:13so that Christ
24:14may have compassion
24:16for us.
24:21Let us pray.
24:25Grant, we beseech you,
24:27merciful Lord,
24:29to your faithful people
24:30pardon and peace,
24:33that they may be
24:34cleansed from all
24:35their sins
24:35and serve you
24:37with a quiet mind.
24:39Through Jesus Christ,
24:41our Lord.
24:43Amen.
24:48May the Lord bless us
24:50and keep us
24:51from all evil.
24:53bringing us
24:54to everlasting life.
24:56Amen.
