00:23Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, from the cross, looked in upon your mother, overwhelmed with
00:34grief and tears, and so truly took compassion on her sorrow, commending her to the care of your disciple John,
00:42as also you commended John, and in him, all of us, to her maternal care.
00:50Grant me to love and honour your mother, with the purest and most ardent love, that I may have her
00:57for my mother, and be worthily acknowledged by her as her son. Grant that in every necessity, and especially at
01:05the hour of my death, I may find her ever present and at hand to help me.
01:13Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, with your wounds gaping, and your head crowned with thorns,
01:21while hanging in misery upon the cross, declared that you were without any consolation.
01:29Grant that in all adversity and times of temptation and desolation, I may fly with faith to you, my most
01:37holy Father, and putting no confidence in myself, grant that I may place all my hopes in you alone, and
01:44entirely resign myself and trust in you.
01:48Wound my innermost soul, with the remembrance of your wounds, write and imprint them upon my heart, satiate me wholly
01:57with your blood, that all my intentions may be fixed in you alone, and that I may seek and find
02:03and hold you fast, possessing you for ever and ever.
02:09Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when your body was exhausted from the loss of blood,
02:16gasped for breath, and cried out on the cross that you were tormented with thirst, while you burnt with unspeakable
02:23desire for our salvation.
02:27Give me grace to thirst most ardently after your honour, and the salvation of souls, and be ready cheerfully to
02:35spend myself for them, according to your will.
02:40Grant that no love of any transitory object may possess my soul, that I may never attach myself to any
02:47creature, and that even when I am bound to love, I may love only in you.
02:53But give me grace to love you above all, and with my whole soul, and quietly to rest in you.
03:02Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were thirsty, even at the point of death,
03:09permitted a sponge filled with vinegar to be offered to you, and that by tasting this, you might make satisfaction
03:17for our gluttony, giving us an example of poverty.
03:22Grant me the grace to despise any unlawful pleasure and delight, and to avoid any excess in eating and drinking,
03:29and may I use with moderation and thanksgiving, whatever you do give me for the support of my poor body.
03:38So cleanse, I beg you, the taste of my heart, that it may relish nothing except that which is pleasing
03:44to you, and may find nothing but bitterness in whatever displeases you.
03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, you, the greatest lover of the human race, who, when you
03:58were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close, wrought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar
04:05of the cross for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works, namely, to seek your
04:17honour with an upright and sincere heart, and to desire nothing save you alone.
04:24Grant that I may never grow weary or lukewarm in your service, but a fervent spirit, always be ever renewed
04:31within me, that I may daily be more and more inflamed to love and praise you.
04:38Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who willingly underwent death, when commending yourself to your father,
04:46and bending your adorable head, you gave up the ghost, and thus, by laying down your life for your sheep,
04:54showed yourself to be the good shepherd.
05:00You are dead, only begotten son of God, you are dead, my beloved one, that I may live for ever.
05:06What hope, what confidence is laid up for me in your death and in your blood.
05:11I glorify you, I give you thanks as far as in me lies.
05:15Give me grace to die entirely, to sin, and all evil desires, and to live to you alone.
05:23May I think of you alone, may my understanding exercise.
05:26Itself in nothing except you, that, clad in your grace and with holy charity, I may soon after the close
05:35of this life come to you, the true paradise.
05:39O good Jesus, by your bitter passion and death, grant to me the living pardon and grace, and to the
05:46faithful departed rest and everlasting light.
05:50For his honour and glory be to you, O Christ, at his death the sun withdrew its light, and the
05:58veil of the temple was divided in two.
06:01May the earth quaked, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were cut, and the graves opened.
06:07May the rays of your grace never leave me, I beg you, you son of righteousness.
06:14You that are my God, may they always lighten, even the very inmost recesses of my heart, that I may
06:22joyfully serve you for ever.
06:25Tear away from me the veil of hypocrisy.
06:27Make the ground of my soul quake with saving penitence.
06:32Rend in tomb this heart of stone of mine, that, being wholly renewed within, I may despise anything perishable, and
06:41love only the things that are of heaven.
06:45Amen.
06:49O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
07:01O be joyful in the Lord, holy land, serve the Lord with gladness, and come in all his presence with
07:16your song.
07:19He is sure that the Lord, he is God.
07:24He is your worship.
07:26He is of heaven, the Lord with gladness, and love only ourselves.
07:30We are his people, and the sheep of his past.
07:37O Lord, obey his speech with his praise.
07:43And he is sure that the God's great praise.
07:47We thank God to Him and speak to the Lord of His name.
07:57For the Lord is gracious, His mercy is everlasting,
08:07and His truth and joy from generation to generation.
08:19Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
08:31as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end.
08:48Amen.

09:36All he cares, and he wants us to set up on our backs.
09:46Let's then praise the name of the Lord, for he still the word ever made.
09:56He commanded, and they were created.
10:02He had made them fast for ever and ever.
10:10He had given them a love which shall not be brought.
10:18Praise the Lord of our God, ye dragons and little kings.
10:27Fire and hail, star and ravenous, wing and stone for me is born.

12:36A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, chapters 18 and 19.
12:44He will be delivered up to the Gentiles, will be mocked, treated shamefully, and spat upon.
12:52They will scourge and kill him, and on the third day he will rise again.
12:59The disciples understood none of these things.
13:02This saying was hidden from them, and they did not understand the things that were said.
13:09It came about that when he got near to Jericho, a certain blind man was seated by the side
13:14of the road, making a request for money from those who went by.
13:19Hearing the sound of a great number of people going by, he said,
13:23What is going on?
13:25He said to him, Jesus of Nazareth is going by.
13:30So he cried out in a loud voice, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.
13:37Those who were in front made protest and said to him, Be quiet.
13:41But he said all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me.
13:49Jesus stopped and gave orders that he was to come to him.
13:52And when he came near, he said to him, What would you have me do for you?
14:00The man replied, Lord, may I be able to see again?
14:06Jesus said, See again.
14:09Your faith has made you well.
14:12And straight away he was able to see, and went after him, giving glory to God.
14:17And all the people who saw it gave praise to God.
14:25Jesus entered into Dureka, and was passing through.
14:29And a man named Zacchaeus was there.
14:31He was a chief tax collector, and was very rich.
14:35He was trying to get a look at Jesus, but being a short man,
14:39he could not see over the crowd.
14:42So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him.
14:46Because Jesus was going to pass that way.
14:51When Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said to him,
14:55Zacchaeus, come down quickly, because I am going to stay at your house today.
15:01So he came down quickly and welcomed Jesus joyfully.
15:05When the people saw it, they all complained.
15:09He has gone into the house to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.
15:16But Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord,
15:20Lord, half of my possessions I now give to the poor.
15:23And if I have cheated anyone of anything, I have paid back four times as much.
15:30Then Jesus said to him,
15:33Today salvation has come upon this household,
15:36because he too is a son of Abraham.
15:39For the son of man came to seek and to save the lost.
15:43This is the word of the Lord.
15:46Thanks be to God.
15:52The announcement by Christ of his approaching sacrifice
15:55was the announcement of the solution to the enigma
15:58which all the ages of mankind have been endeavouring to resolve.
16:06How to obtain peace with a justly offended God.
16:11The need of such a propitiation combined with a deep sense of human misery
16:17runs through all heathen religious systems.
16:21They have their legends of a bygone golden age
16:24when gods and men lived in close union.
16:28When the earth brought forth of its own accord
16:30all that could minister to man's requirement or delight
16:33and universal justice prevailed amongst mankind.
16:40All religions have since been occupied with a sense of its sin,
16:44its origin and its abolition.
16:48Under the deep sense of the need of reconciliation
16:51the heathen of old thought that they could actually, of themselves,
16:56do what would atone for their sin.
16:59We see in their sacrifices
17:01a strange mixture of what is highest and what is lowest,
17:05a miserable delusion.
17:07And yet a near guess
17:09had the true solution of the problem
17:10that they, on their own,
17:12were unable to resolve.
17:16The sacrifice of Christ
17:17had once sanctioned and abolished
17:19all the sacrificial worship that had preceded it.
17:23And as a matter of history
17:25we find that after the sacrifice of Christ
17:28animal sacrificing with the shedding of blood
17:31came suddenly to an end.
17:34While, henceforth,
17:35sacrificial terms and expressions began to group themselves
17:39around one person and one head,
17:42the lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world.
17:48This faith affords a wondrous confirmation of the death of Christ
17:52as the true atonement for all sin
17:54of all the world.
17:57We cannot understand sacrifice rightly
17:59until we survey from the height of Golgotha,
18:02until we seek to understand it from this point of view.
18:05We are like the disciples in the text
18:08who, when our Lord spoke of his approaching sacrifice,
18:12understood none of these things.
18:19We have, in this passage,
18:21two noises suggestive
18:24of the human life
18:25with which we are all so familiar.
18:28There is the tramp, tramp, tramp of feet,
18:30the swaying multitude,
18:32the din of many minds and voices,
18:34many experiences,
18:36all moving in obedience to a common impulse.
18:41Men and women,
18:43when they become male units of a crowd,
18:45forget, for a time,
18:47their personal histories.
18:48They are swept on by the current,
18:50sharing and adding to its excitement.
18:54There is nothing more unaccountable sometimes
18:56than the impulses which are communicated
18:59from person to person,
19:01passing an infection throughout the multitude.
19:04Different days have different idols.
19:06Those who are shouting themselves hoarse
19:09with their hosannas at Jericho
19:11will shout themselves hoarse
19:12with the cry,
19:14Away with him!
19:15Crucify him!
19:17in Jerusalem.
19:19Fickle popularity.
19:22The Lord knew exactly
19:23what the applause of the crowd was worth.
19:26The children crying in the temple
19:28were far more to him
19:29than the loud voice
19:30and the tremendous enthusiasm
19:32of the thousands
19:33who had swelled the triumph
19:35of the entry into the city of David.
19:38But through that tumult,
19:40in the midst of that noise,
19:41there is another
19:42which only
19:44always
19:45reaches the ears
19:46of the Lord of Sophaoth.
19:49Only one voice,
19:51maybe sometimes two or three,
19:54shrill and clamorous,
19:56the voice of misery
19:57and want
19:57and prayer.
20:00Had he not heard
20:01that same voice
20:02Christ in the highest of heaven,
20:03had it not pierced
20:05through the praises
20:05of angel and archangel,
20:07of cherubim and seraphim,
20:10the cry of a sinful
20:11and weary world.
20:13A little one only
20:15in the system of the universe,
20:17but the least in need
20:18has a special way
20:19of access
20:19to the eternal love.
20:22From afar off,
20:23the great shepherd
20:24heard the bleat
20:25of the sheep
20:26that had strayed
20:27into the wilderness.
20:29He who heard
20:30the sigh of the world
20:31from the excellent glory
20:33will not turn
20:34from the piteous pleading
20:35of the poor and bleeding.
20:38God's tenderness
20:39individualizes.
20:41The poor man cried
20:42and the Lord heard him
20:44and saved him
20:45from all his trouble.
20:49Let us think
20:50of this poor man
20:51in today's reading.
20:53And perhaps
20:54we will realize
20:55that he is
20:56our close relative.
21:01He's been sitting
21:02by the wayside
21:03begging.
21:04And what are we all
21:06but beggars
21:06at the world's wayside?
21:08Even the mind
21:09was richly endowed.
21:11The heart most wealthy
21:12in love and imagination
21:13leads
21:14for life
21:15more and fuller.
21:17Is there no begging
21:18from heaven
21:19the consciousness
21:20of the fountain
21:21of living water?
21:23This
21:25Bartimaeus
21:25taking his place
21:26day by day
21:27on the main street
21:28and asking for money
21:30is only too faithful
21:32a picture of me
21:33wanting
21:34and desiring
21:35and alas
21:37too often
21:37trying to satisfy
21:38my soul
21:39with some
21:40dole
21:40of happiness
21:41or excitement
21:42thrown to me.
21:44A beggar
21:46all the while
21:46blind.
21:50But what is this?
21:52There is a sudden
21:53unusual bustle
21:54and dim.
21:55What does it mean?
21:56We can imagine
21:57the question
21:58addressed
21:58with only
21:59a languid interest
22:00to someone
22:01at hand.
22:03A languor
22:03which vanishes
22:04when the answer
22:05is given.
22:06It's Jesus
22:07of Nazareth
22:08who is passing by.
22:10Ah
22:11the newness
22:12of crime
22:12the newness
22:13of life
22:15what and how
22:16he had heard
22:17of his Jesus
22:17we do not know
22:18but he had heard
22:20enough to open
22:20the gates
22:21of the soul.
22:22The one argument
22:23is needed
22:24the one reasoning
22:26I am here
22:27he is there
22:28son of David
22:28have mercy
22:29on me.
22:32It is the great
22:33hour of a human
22:34life
22:34when speech
22:35is begun
22:35between the soul
22:36and heaven
22:38speech
22:38arrests
22:39the love
22:39of God
22:40in the way.
22:41We enter
22:41heaven
22:42by prayer.
22:46Those
22:46around
22:47bid the one
22:48who cries
22:48hold his voice
22:50so speak
22:51the many
22:51to the one
22:52in earnest.
22:53Notice how
22:54often in the
22:55gospels
22:55the disciples
22:56are represented
22:57as keeping
22:58back from
22:58Christ
22:59instead of
23:00helping
23:00to him.
23:02They still
23:03did not
23:04understand
23:04the heart
23:05of God
23:05and men
23:06do not
23:06know it
23:07still.
23:08There is a
23:09send them
23:10away
23:10in the
23:11minds
23:11of even
23:12the
23:12well
23:12disposed.
23:14Earnestness
23:15meets
23:15discouragements
23:16where it
23:17least expects
23:18them.
23:19Cry on
23:20you who
23:21has felt
23:21the breath
23:22of the
23:22passing
23:22saviour.
23:24If those
23:25about you
23:25are unsympathetic
23:26throw yourself
23:28the more
23:29on the
23:30Lord.
23:31The more
23:31they protest
23:32the more
23:33you cry
23:33son of God
23:34they will
23:35not take
23:35me up
23:36father and
23:37mother
23:37even
23:37forsake
23:37me
23:38you
23:38are my
23:39only
23:39home
23:40do not
23:41delay
23:42my
23:42Lord
23:42God.
23:46Then
23:46there is
23:47the
23:47Christ
23:47commandment
23:49bring him
23:49to me.
23:53It is
23:53the
23:53commandment
23:54to an
23:55often
23:55misunderstanding
23:56and
23:56misinterpreting
23:57church.
23:59Christ
23:59has much
24:00to bear
24:00at the
24:00hand of
24:01the
24:01world.
24:02He
24:02has
24:02also
24:02much
24:03to
24:03bear
24:03at
24:03the
24:03hand
24:04of
24:04his
24:04church.
24:06How
24:07frequently
24:07those
24:08who are
24:08his
24:09repel
24:09rather than
24:10attract
24:10send
24:11away
24:11rather
24:11than
24:12bring.
24:14Bring!
24:15There
24:16there is
24:17no
24:17gainsaying
24:18discharge.
24:19Instantly
24:20the tone
24:21of the
24:21multitude
24:21changes.

24:24it is

25:00power.
25:01The
25:02blind,
25:02the
25:02poor
25:03bring
25:04to
25:04me.
25:06And
25:07then there
25:07is the
25:08Christ
25:08question.
25:09What
25:10would you
25:11have me
25:11do for
25:12you?
25:14the
25:14question
25:15is put
25:15when the
25:15presence
25:16is
25:16reached.
25:18The
25:18presence
25:19is the
25:19help
25:19to the
25:19answer.
25:21Now
25:22the
25:22great
25:22underlying
25:23want
25:23is
25:23expressed.
25:25Lord,
25:26that I
25:26may
25:26see.
25:30Is it
25:30not the
25:31prayer of
25:31the human
25:32heart
25:32when the
25:33quickening
25:33presence
25:33of God
25:34is
25:34realized?
25:36It
25:36is to
25:37prepare
25:37for the
25:38revelation
25:38that the
25:39will
25:39is
25:40gently
25:40besieged.
25:41He
25:42cannot
25:42force.
25:43He
25:43can only
25:44draw.
25:46Stooping
25:46to you
25:46the person
25:47you are
25:47and as
25:48you are
25:49the word
25:50of grace
25:50and truth
25:51is
25:52what do
25:54you want
25:54me to
25:54do
25:55for you?
25:59Then we
26:00have the
26:00Christ
26:00action.
26:02He
26:03touched
26:03the eyes
26:04says
26:04Saint
26:04Matthew.
26:06Receive
26:06your sight
26:07your faith
26:08has saved
26:08you
26:09says
26:09Luke.
26:11His
26:11faith
26:12has
26:12been
26:12a
26:12trust
26:13in
26:13the
26:13dark.
26:14He
26:15could
26:15not
26:15make
26:15the
26:15light
26:16but he
26:16could
26:16call
26:17for it.
26:18And he
26:18had
26:19called.
26:19He
26:19had
26:19pressed
26:20to
26:20Christ
26:20awfully
26:21in
26:21earnest
26:22abundantly
26:23confident.
26:25The
26:25faith
26:26saved
26:26through
26:27what it
26:27did.
26:28It
26:28brought
26:28him
26:29to
26:29the
26:29Lord
26:29and
26:29that
26:30is
26:30to
26:30salvation.
26:32The
26:33first
26:33use
26:33of the
26:34new
26:34sight
26:34was
26:35to
26:35see
26:35the
26:35deliverer.
26:36the
26:37first
26:37face
26:37that
26:38brought
26:38its
26:38image
26:38in
26:39his
26:39heart
26:39was
26:40the
26:40face
26:40of
26:40God
26:40in
26:41Christ.
26:43Saved
26:44whole
26:45because
26:45that
26:45face
26:46was
26:46formed
26:46in
26:46the
26:46heart
26:47of
26:47hearts
26:47never
26:48more
26:48to
26:48fade
26:49from
26:49it.
26:50I
26:51was
26:51blind
26:51and
26:51now
26:52I
26:52see.
26:54Go
26:55on
26:55your
26:55way
26:55says
26:56the
26:56Lord.
26:57No
26:57dearest
26:58master
26:58where
26:59you
26:59I
26:59will
26:59go
27:00where
27:00you
27:00dwell
27:01I
27:01will
27:01dwell
27:01your
27:02way
27:02is
27:02my
27:02way
27:03mine
27:04the
27:04new
27:04song
27:04which
27:05you
27:05have
27:05given.
27:09And
27:09then we
27:10come
27:10to
27:11the
27:11encounter
27:11with
27:12Zacchaeus
27:13a
27:14person
27:14often
27:14lost
27:15amongst
27:15Christians
27:16today.
27:18There
27:18is a
27:19large
27:19body
27:19of
27:19opinion
27:20that
27:20has
27:20forgotten
27:21the
27:21simple
27:21fact
27:22that
27:22not
27:22one
27:22of
27:22us
27:22is
27:23perfect
27:23and
27:24that
27:24furthermore
27:24Jesus
27:25came
27:25to
27:25save
27:25sinners.
27:28If
27:28we
27:28were
27:28not
27:28sinners
27:29then
27:29surely
27:30he
27:30would
27:30not
27:30have
27:30needed
27:31to
27:31have
27:31died
27:31and
27:31rise
27:32again
27:32from
27:32the
27:33dead.
27:35The
27:36simple
27:36problem
27:36with
27:36Christians
27:37is
27:38that
27:38we
27:38confuse
27:38sin
27:39and
27:40sinner.
27:41What
27:41do
27:42I
27:42mean
27:42exactly?
27:43In
27:44basic
27:44terms
27:45we
27:45should
27:46be
27:46like
27:46Christ
27:48but
27:49who
27:49loves
27:50the
27:50ones
27:50who
27:50commit
27:51them.
27:52Too
27:53often
27:53we
27:53look
27:53down
27:54on
27:54people
27:54we
27:55have
27:55heard
27:55gossip
27:55about
27:56and
27:56wonder
27:57why
27:57such
27:57wicked
27:57people
27:58are
27:58in
27:58church
27:59on
27:59a
27:59Sunday.
28:01How
28:02can
28:02it
28:02be
28:03possible
28:03that
28:04a
28:04murderer
28:04or
28:05adulterer
28:06receive
28:06communion?
28:09Could
28:10insidere
28:10some
28:11of the
28:11people
28:11that
28:11Jesus
28:12met
28:12on
28:12his
28:12travels?
28:13Some
28:14like
28:14Zacchaeus
28:15here
28:15in
28:15this
28:15account
28:16join
28:16with
28:17him
28:17and
28:17become
28:18a
28:18part
28:18of
28:18the
28:18traveling
28:19band
28:19of
28:19followers.
28:21Another
28:21like
28:22the
28:22thief
28:22on
28:22the
28:22cross
28:23join
28:24him
28:24in
28:24paradise
28:24with
28:2523
28:2643.
28:28Then
28:28we
28:28have
28:28the
28:29adulteress
28:29that
28:29Jesus
28:30forgave
28:30and
28:30told
28:30not
28:31to
28:31sin
28:31again.
28:32John
28:3218
28:33them
28:34if
28:34if
28:36Christ
28:38will
28:39not
28:39condemn
28:39us
28:42what
28:42right
28:43have
28:43others
28:43to
28:44condemn
28:44us?
28:46No.
28:47Let us
28:47leave the
28:48condemnation
28:48to our
28:49judge
28:49for he
28:50is the
28:50one who
28:50knows
28:51the
28:51facts
28:51who
28:52knows
28:52whether
28:52we
28:53are
28:53repentant
28:53or
28:53not.
28:54Let
28:55us
28:55stop
28:55looking
28:56at
28:56our
28:56other
28:57people's
28:57failings
28:58and pay
28:59more
28:59attention
28:59to
29:00our
29:00own
29:00which
29:01are
29:01many.
29:06A
29:07whole
29:07paragraph
29:07is
29:08devoted
29:08to
29:09one
29:09man's
29:09life
29:10while
29:10so
29:11many
29:11great
29:11subjects
29:11are
29:12hardly
29:12touched
29:12upon
29:13in
29:13the
29:13great
29:13Christian
29:14scriptures.
29:15Yet
29:16let us
29:16not
29:16complain
29:17of what
29:17looks
29:17to us
29:18like
29:18capriciousness
29:19and
29:19the
29:20incompleteness
29:21of
29:21divine
29:21revelation.
29:23For
29:23in
29:24these
29:24portrayals
29:25of
29:25individuals
29:26we
29:26have
29:26not
29:26only
29:26the
29:27most
29:27practical
29:27aspects
29:28of
29:28the
29:28Christian
29:28faith
29:29but
29:30we
29:30get
29:30nearer
29:30to
29:30God
29:31than
29:31would
29:31otherwise
29:32have
29:32been
29:32possible.
29:36Zacchaeus
29:37sought to
29:38see
29:38Jesus
29:38through
29:39natural
29:39curiosity
29:41and yet
29:42such
29:42curiosity
29:43may be
29:44turned
29:44to the
29:44highest
29:45of
29:45uses.
29:46Zacchaeus
29:47only sought
29:48to see
29:48the man
29:49but in
29:50the end
29:50he sought
29:50a
29:50sapien.
29:51He desired
29:52to see
29:52a wonder
29:53but in
29:54the end
29:54he was
29:55made
29:55into a
29:56wonder
29:56himself.
30:02Let us
30:03pray.
30:06Grant
30:06we beseech
30:07you
30:08merciful
30:08Lord
30:08to your
30:10faithful
30:10people
30:11pardon
30:12and peace
30:13that they
30:14may be
30:14cleansed
30:15from all
30:15their sins
30:16and serve
30:17you
30:18with a
30:18quiet
30:19mind.
30:20Through
30:21Jesus
30:21Christ
30:22our
30:22Lord.
30:23Amen.
30:29May the
30:30Lord bless
30:31us
30:31and keep
30:31us
30:32from
30:32all
30:32evil
30:33bringing
30:34us
30:34to
30:35everlasting
30:35life.
30:36Amen.
