00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ,
00:28who your faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were
00:34persecuting you and conspiring against your life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart all evil love
00:42of any creature. Grant that I may never prefer anything to you. May I always show the most
00:51perfect charity towards all men, especially those who trouble me. Pardon me, my Holy Redeemer,
00:59for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you, and for having, for the sake of
01:05vile pleasures, turned myself from you. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ,
01:12who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem, according to the commandments of
01:18the law, giving them an example of humility and holy love, by kneeling down on the ground and
01:24washing their feet, wiping them with a linen cloth. I pray that this your example may penetrate my soul,
01:33destroying thoroughly any haughtiness and pride within me. Give me, O Lord, the deepest humility
01:40that I may, without delay, perform the lowest ministry to all men. Give me perfect obedience,
01:48that I may, with complete diligence, observe as your commandments, whatever your appointed
01:54representatives may decide. Give me the most fervent charity, that I may sincerely love all mankind.
02:05Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ, who out of your unspeakable love, gave us the sacrament of
02:12the Eucharist, and in it given yourself to us with wondrous liberality, so that you might remain with us
02:20even bodily unto the end of the world. Grant me, I beg you O Lord, an earnest longing,
02:28and in kindle in my innermost soul, an intense hunger for this adorable sacrament. Grant that when
02:37I go to the table of life, I may receive you with chaste affection, complete humility, and perfect purity
02:44of heart. May my soul so thirst for you now, and so languish in your love, that I may one
02:51day be found
02:53suitable to enjoy the delights of your eternal kingdom, to the glory everlasting of your name.
03:00Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ, who when you were about to leave the world,
03:06commanded and comforted with words of unspeakable sweetness your disciples, and most earnestly
03:14commended them in prayer to your Father, most plainly showing how tenderly you loved them and us,
03:22who were to believe through their word. Grant that my heart may evermore relish your word,
03:30and that I may find your words sweeter than honey to my taste.
03:36O that the spirit of that burning exhortation may so glide into my heart, that I may be wholly
03:42transformed into your love. So direct all my ways, O Lord my God, that your holy will may be done
03:50in
03:50and by me for ever and ever.
03:55Praise and honour and glory be to you O Christ, who went out with your disciples across the Kedron
04:01Brook, and came into the garden which you knew would be where you would be taken.
04:08May I entirely give up my will, and always follow and love yours. May I for your honour and for
04:15the
04:15salvation of my brothers and sisters, boldly endure any adversity, and be willing even to lay down my
04:22life, if your divine providence should so ordain it.
04:28Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ, who as your passion drew nigh,
04:33began to be sorrowful and sad, with a heavy heart, and so that by transferring the weakness of all your
04:41members to yourself, you might be able to console and strengthen them, when they were in their time of
04:47fear at the approach of death. By this, your own weakness which you have willingly taken upon you.
04:56Preserve me, I beg you, both from the immoderate sorrow and from foolish gladness.
05:03Grant that the grief which I have thus far endured may be for your glory and for the remission of
05:09my
05:09sins. Remove mercifully from me all distrust and unnecessary weakness, and confirm and establish my soul
05:19whole in you. Praise and honour and glory be to you O Christ, who fell prostrate on the ground and
05:27prayed
05:27to your Holy Father, humbly offering your whole self to him, saying, Your will be done. Give me grace in
05:37every necessity and trouble to fly to you in prayer, and freely to resign and myself give myself up to
05:45your
05:45will. May I never unduly endeavour to escape from trouble, but receive all things from your hand with a
05:54quiet mind, and may I endure everything in meekness of spirit for your love. Amen.
06:05O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:12O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:17O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:19O be joyful in the Lord, O be joyful in the Lord, O be joyful in the Lord, O be
06:23damned,
06:24serve the Lord with gladness, and come in voice, present, with a tongue.
06:34Be sure that the Lord, he is God.
06:40O God, O be bold behavior, soom in the Lord, o Son of God, is He's God.
06:46O Lord, the Lord, we are his people and the sheep of his Son.
06:53O Lord, do your way into His case of faith?

13:42that the Lord is among them
13:46as in the holy place of Simon.
13:53Thou art on open high,
13:58thou hast let captivity practice
14:01and received gifts from them.
14:13Thou art on open high,
14:37He is the God,
14:40even the God of the kingdom of salvation.
14:47God is the Lord by whom we escape death.
14:54God shall hold the head of his enemies,
15:00that the heaven is come of such a war as
15:05no air on sea in his enemies.
15:09God shall hold the head of his enemies,
15:11my Lord has said,
15:15I am bring my people again as I did from creation.
15:23My Lord will I bring the men as I did sometime
15:29from the earth in the sea.
15:34As I first may be teaching the love of my memories,
15:40and that the sum of my daughters may be breathed through the same.
15:51It is one scene, O God,
15:55how thou callest,
15:59how thou my God and King,
16:02who hast been a sanctuary,
16:08as he must go before,
16:11and his trance for all of us,
16:18in the midst of the dancers playing with the difference.
16:26In thanks of Israel unto God,
16:31O Lord,
16:32in my congregations,
16:36from my ground on the heart.
16:43There is a little mention in their home,
16:49and the princess of children they can't.
16:56The princess of Slymulo,
17:00and the princess of Mectar.
17:06My God has said to us thank for thee,
17:12establish something for God that love has brought in us.
17:22So we sing, we sing,
17:25as Jerusalem,
17:28so shall he be present unto thee.

21:39Did not he who made the outside in the same way make the inside?
21:44If you give to the poor such things as you were able,
21:47then all things are clean to you.
21:51But woe to you, you Pharisees!
21:54You give a tenth of your mint, rue and every herb,
21:57and yet you neglect justice and love for God.
22:00But you should have done these things without neglecting the others.
22:04Woe to you, you Pharisees!
22:07You love the best seats in the synagogues,
22:10and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces.
22:14Woe to you, you are like unmarked graves,
22:17and people walk over them without realising it.
22:22One of the experts in religious law said to him,
22:26Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us too.
22:30Jesus replied,
22:32Woe to you experts in religious law as well!
22:35You load people down with burdens difficult to bear,
22:38and yet you yourselves refuse to touch the burdens with even one of your fingers.
22:44Woe to you!
22:46You build the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors killed.
22:50You testify that you approve of the deeds of your ancestors,
22:53because they killed the prophets and you build their tombs.
22:57For this reason also the wisdom of God said,
23:00I will send them prophets and apostles,
23:02some of whom they will kill and persecute,
23:05so that this generation may be held accountable for the blood of all the prophets
23:09that has been shed since the beginning of time,
23:13from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah,
23:16who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary.
23:19Yes, I tell you,
23:20it will be charged against this generation.
23:24Woe to you, you experts in religious law!
23:27You have taken away the keys to knowledge.
23:30You did not go in yourselves,
23:32and you have hindered those who were going in.
23:36When he went out from there,
23:37the experts in the law and the Pharisees began to oppose him bitterly,
23:41and ask him hostile questions about many things,
23:45plotting against him to catch him in something he might say.
23:50This is the word of the law.
23:53Thanks be to God.
24:00Jesus criticized the crowd,
24:02because it was looking for a sign,
24:05why was this wrong?
24:07Surely there is nothing wrong with wanting confirmation from God,
24:10by way of some sort of a sign.
24:14No, there is nothing wrong with asking God for a sign,
24:18but in the instance,
24:20in particular,
24:21today,
24:22the people were not looking for the sort of sign that we might look for.
24:26They were looking for a spectacle.
24:28They were interested to see what miracle would be performed next,
24:32so that they could go home and gossip about it.
24:36Whilst we might ask for confirmation of some spiritual matter that we have been praying over,
24:43they were not the least interested in their spiritual state,
24:46their sinful nature and their need for forgiveness.
24:50And that is why Jesus referred to them as a wicked generation.
24:56The reference to Jonah is interesting,
24:59for of course,
25:00he was inside the quail for three days before being ejected,
25:03and there is a clear parallel with Jesus.
25:06But the fundamental difference is that the people of Nineveh listened to Jonah,
25:11and were saved.
25:13Whereas here was a crowd of people looking for a circus act.
25:16They were not remotely interested in what Jesus had to say.
25:23Likewise,
25:23in 1 Kings 10,
25:25we read that the Queen of Sheba,
25:26who came to visit Solomon to hear his wisdom,
25:29and to learn of what he had to say.
25:33Now the people had something far greater than Jonah,
25:36or even Solomon,
25:38but they were truly not interested.
25:43Jesus promised one more sign,
25:45a sign based on the story of Jonah,
25:48namely his resurrection,
25:50which would be preached to the world at large
25:52after his ascension into heaven.
25:55This would be the last chance for the Jewish people.
25:58If they would,
25:59but at last listen,
26:00then they could be saved from destruction.
26:03But if not,
26:04then the anger of the Lord would find them.
26:07Yes,
26:08the people would get their sign,
26:09the greatest sign there could ever be in history.
26:13But they would not be looking for it,
26:14and they would not see it.
26:19Jesus tells us a few home truths,
26:21and made plenty of enemies in the process.
26:26The law of the Old Testament was full of ritual,
26:28and there was a process for sitting down to eat,
26:31for the washing of hands.
26:34Jesus set them to eat,
26:36with regard to the ritual,
26:38and is challenged.
26:40But the point that Jesus made is simple.
26:43The outside of our bodies is not more important than what lies inside.
26:48What is to be gained from the ritual cleansing of the outside,
26:51if our heart is full of broken thoughts and deeds?
26:55The Pharisees were full of their importance and status in society.
27:00They are deferred to in the street.
27:02They get the best seats in the synagogues,
27:04and enjoy many other privileges.
27:07They go through all the motions of the law,
27:10but their hearts are greedy and corrupt.
27:14So let us be on our guard,
27:16that we do not become full of our self-importance,
27:19whatever our status in life.
27:22Remember, we are all equal before God,
27:24we are all sinful,
27:26and we are all dependent on the grace of Jesus for our salvation.
27:30Without that which God has given us,
27:33we would be nothing and would have nothing.
27:35Let the Lord God teach us genuine humility and blood for our neighbours.
27:43Jesus can be seen to be highly critical of the religious establishment,
27:47both Pharisee and scribe religious lawyers.
27:53These were people who maintained all the outward trappings of the law,
27:57but whose hearts were as far away from the law as they could be.
28:01They were like maggot-infested apples,
28:04shiny and red on the outside, but rotten in the core.
28:08They loved to show how they were obedient in all the detail of the law.
28:14But they failed to grasp the principles of the law,
28:16and apply it to their lives.
28:21This would have been a group of people who were horrified
28:24by the two great commandments given to the people by Jesus.
28:28For him, the point of the law in its entirety
28:30was summarised in these two simple and all-embracing laws.
28:34To love, honour and worship God above everything else,
28:37and to love our neighbours as we love ourselves.
28:42You can imagine the indignation.
28:44But what about this law or that law?
28:48No, the whole of the law is summarised in these two laws,
28:51so perfect they are.
28:53And they said the law in its proper context.
28:57If you live a life which abides by the laws of Jesus,
29:00you automatically live a life in obedience to the law.
29:04But it does not work the other way around,
29:07as Jesus was trying to explain to these people.
29:12The simple truth was that over the centuries,
29:15the interpretation of the once simple law of Moses
29:18had become so burdensome as to be impossible.
29:22By their litigious attitude,
29:25they condemned the people by their own words,
29:28regardless of the fact that the ones they condemned
29:30might be nearer to their truth by far than they were themselves.
29:37This, sadly, is something we also need to consider today.
29:41For in many ways the church,
29:43of whichever branch you choose to consider,
29:46has become litigious.
29:48It has become bogged down in rules
29:51to the exclusion of the love and mercy that Jesus once taught us.
29:55Thus it is, for example,
29:57that someone who was divorced a generation ago
30:00remains ostracised by the church
30:02and unable to play the role he ought, for example.
30:06The church that preaches forgiveness of sin
30:09finds itself unable to forgive certain sins.
30:15Is this a contradiction?
30:19On a more serious note,
30:21it is necessary for the church to remember
30:24that we should hate sin,
30:26whilst at the same time loving and forgiving sinners.
30:29Remember, Jesus went to dinner with the sinner.
30:32As opposed to the high priest.
30:34Which is not to say that the high priest was not a sinner,
30:37for of course he was.
30:38For we have all fallen short in sin.
30:41Romans 3.23
30:43And are unworthy of his love.
30:47Jesus criticised the Pharisees
30:49for their double standards,
30:50and in this passage,
30:52gives an example of their duplicity.
30:55On the one hand,
30:56they built tombs and monuments
30:58to commemorate the prophets
30:59who had gone before in the past.
31:01But on the other hand,
31:03they continued to venerate those who persecuted them.
31:06And as in the case of Zechariah,
31:08who was stoned to death in the temple,
31:10Jude Chronicles 24,
31:12and killed them.
31:15Now that one of whom
31:17so much had been prophesied
31:19was with them,
31:21they showed the same anxiety
31:22to persecution and murder
31:24as their ancestors.
31:26The message of the prophets
31:28had been vindicated
31:29so many times in the past,
31:30before the exile,
31:32during the exile,
31:33and after the return.
31:35There was this specific reference
31:37to King Cyrus of Persia in Isaiah,
31:40some 100 years before the event.
31:43Isaiah 44, 28, for example.
31:46If there was any doubt
31:47as to the authenticity of these prophets,
31:50which was not at all disputed
31:52by the Pharisees at the time of Jesus,
31:55they only needed to consult the facts.
31:59However,
32:00only lip service was paid to the prophets.
32:03In their hearts,
32:04the Pharisees and the scribes
32:06had a vested interest
32:07in maintaining the status quo,
32:09the order of things
32:10that permitted them
32:11to have such an authority
32:12in religious matters,
32:14almost to the point
32:15of making the priests irrelevant.
32:18As suggested in the closing verses
32:20of this passage,
32:22the enemies of Jesus
32:23began to close ranks in opposition,
32:26fearful that he might just upset
32:28their comfortable lifestyles,
32:30that the negative things
32:31he said against them
32:32might be turned against them
32:33by the people.
32:36Surely, it was high time
32:38that something was done
32:39about this Jesus of Nazareth.
33:02O God's name's name because of all that
33:05wonderful to the Him
33:07God bless you.
33:48God bless you.
34:07God bless you.
34:37God bless you.

37:28and keep us from all evil, bringing us to everlasting life. Amen.
