00:22Let us pray.
00:50Let us pray.
00:54And through your mercy be introduced as an adopted son into the heavenly inheritance.
01:31Let us pray.
01:37Let us pray.
01:47Let us pray.
01:49Draw me after you, that I may quickly follow.
01:53Grant that for your sake I may entirely deny, forsake and go out of myself.
01:59Give me grace to think of you alone and to find no joy except in you, my Redeemer.
02:07Grant that I may love you alone and may return love for love, may I earnestly seek after you and
02:14live to you alone.
02:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when bowed down by the weight of your cross, at
02:24length reached the place of punishment, where, quite exhausted, they offered you wine mingled with gall.
02:34May you extinguish in me all gluttonous and carnal desire, giving me grace never to consent to any impure or
02:43unlawful pleasure.
02:45But may I take my food in moderation to the glory of your name and may hunger and thirst after
02:51you alone, and find no pleasure or gladness except in you.
02:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who was stripped before the gaze of all people on Mount
03:04Calvary, and the soreness of your wounds being increased by the removal of your clothing.
03:11You did not refuse to undergo, for my sake, the most dreadful pain.
03:17Grant that I may love the spirit of poverty and never be disturbed by want or scarcity.
03:24Give me grace to bear patiently any difficulties or troubles in this life for the glory of your name.
03:31Strip my heart of every vain fancy and affection, and grant me a holy intent with pious desires, renewing within
03:41me daily a most pure love for yourself.
03:45Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who gave himself up to be extended naked upon the wood
03:53of the cross, and the joints of your most holy limbs to be wrenched apart, most cruelly nailed and fastened
04:00thereto.
04:02Then, for my sake, you suffered your most delicate hands and feet, to be most deeply wounded.
04:10Grant, O Lord, that I might remember with a faithful and grateful heart this your unspeakable charity,
04:19when you did of your own accord stretch out your hands to be bored and your feet to be pierced
04:25through.
04:26O Lord, enlarge and extend my heart by perfect love of you.
04:32Pierce it and fix it to yourself with the nail of your sweetest love,
04:36and shut up within yourself alone all my senses, all my thoughts, and all my affections.
04:44Amen.
04:48O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:01Be joyful in the Lord, holy lands, serve the Lord with gladness, and come before His presence with a song.
05:17Be sure that the Lord needs God.
05:22Be joyful in the Lord with gladness, and come before His presence with a song.
05:35Be joyful in the Lord, holy lands, and come before His presence with a song.
05:46Be thankful unto Him, and speak to the Lord of His name.
05:55For the Lord is gracious, His mercy is everlasting,
06:17Be joyful in the Lord, holy lands, and come before His presence with a song.
06:25Be joyful in the Lord, holy lands, and come before His presence with a song.
06:33Be joyful in the Lord, holy lands, and come before His presence with a song.
06:46Be joyful in the Lord, holy lands, and come before His presence with a song.
07:03Praise Him, praise Him, praise Him, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His
07:22love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His
07:33love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His
07:33love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His
07:33love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His
07:33love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His
07:33love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His
07:33love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him, all His love, praise Him
12:41One will be taken and the other left.
12:43There will be two women grinding grain together.
12:46One will be taken and the other left.
12:51Then the disciples said to him,
12:54Where, Lord?
12:56He replied,
12:58Where the dead body is,
13:00there the vultures will gather.
13:03This is the word of the Lord.
13:06Thanks be to God.
13:12The unspoken question on the lips of those who heard Jesus speaking
13:16was voiced here by a group of Pharisees.
13:19When is all this going to happen?
13:21They asked.
13:24The answer, when it gained,
13:26was not exactly what they wanted to hear.
13:29They, like Christians ever since,
13:32wanted to know the date, the time and the place.
13:36When they were told that the kingdom of God was already amongst them,
13:39they were confused and in all probability,
13:43somewhat frustrated by his obscure answer.
13:48We then have a warning to the disciples.
13:51They will long for him to return,
13:54but they should resist the calls of those who say he is coming,
13:58for they will not be true.
14:01Instead, they should wait for the evidence of their own eyes
14:04as the lightning flashes across the sky.
14:08Sadly, there are many who claim to have worked out for themselves
14:11when Christ will return.
14:14For everyone, there is a different theory
14:16and extrapolation of dates.
14:19Remember one thing.
14:21Not even Jesus knew when it would be.
14:24Mark 13.31
14:27And that only the Father knows the date and time.
14:31Let us not speculate then
14:33on when this might be,
14:35but to prepare ourselves for it.
14:40Consider that with every day that goes by,
14:42the time draws closer.
14:45Only the foolish will turn around and tell you
14:48he is not coming
14:49on the basis that he is not yet come.
14:54Remember that God has a very long time frame
14:56for the things that he does.
14:59Something that we perhaps cannot begin to fathom.
15:03But just call to mind the essential truth
15:05that his coming is now 2,000 years nearer
15:08than it was when he spoke the words
15:10in today's reading.
15:16There are a number of complex issues involved here.
15:19But I only want to focus on one of them today.
15:23And that is uncertainty.
15:26Because we do not know the point,
15:28it is imperative we are constantly
15:30in a state of preparation.
15:33We cannot say today we shall party.
15:36There will be time tomorrow
15:37to pray and ask for forgiveness.
15:39But what if there is no tomorrow?
15:42What if there is no afternoon today?
15:46As Christians,
15:48we must live every day
15:49as though it might be our last.
15:51We cannot afford to put off
15:53doing the things until tomorrow.
15:55For they may very well never get done.
16:00We are given a number of examples.
16:02From the past,
16:03we have the instance of Noah and the flood.
16:06When the world thought him stupid.
16:09And then the rain came
16:10and the waters rose
16:11and it was too late for them.
16:14From the future,
16:15we have the couple in bed sleeping.
16:17One prepared and one not.
16:19Together with the two women working.
16:22Again, one prepared and one not.
16:27Still not entirely satisfied
16:29with the answers to their questions,
16:31the disciples wanted to know where.
16:35Perhaps,
16:36if they weren't going to get
16:37a straight answer to the when,
16:38they might get an answer to the where.
16:43Again, Jesus gave them an answer
16:44which was not entirely
16:46what they wanted to hear.
16:47And we needed to consider
16:49what he meant.
16:53The point being made
16:54was that there would be
16:55no place as such.
16:58For unlike Judaism,
16:59which was focused on the temple
17:01in Jerusalem,
17:02the church would be worldwide,
17:05centred on the hearts
17:06of the faithful.
17:08However, Jesus told us
17:10to look where the dead body is,
17:12which refers us to the body
17:14of unbelief and sin
17:15that occupies most of the world.
17:19the body that is dead
17:21with sin.
17:24Always maintain
17:25a proper relationship
17:26with God.
17:27It is no good thinking
17:29that I can pray to God
17:30tomorrow
17:30or tonight,
17:32or that God can wait
17:33until I am old.
17:36Quite apart from the coming
17:37of the kingdom of heaven,
17:39our own mortality
17:40lies a short way
17:41around the corner.
17:43There may not be a tonight
17:44or tomorrow for me,
17:45so I pray now
17:47and put my relationship
17:48right today.
17:51By all means,
17:53prepare for a worldly future,
17:56for after all,
17:57it would be foolish not to.
17:59But let us not forget
18:02to be prepared
18:04for the now.
18:08We have in this text
18:10a warning of a peculiar character.
18:13We see it in the type
18:14of the just wrath of God
18:15against those who,
18:17having been once
18:18mercifully delivered,
18:20should afterwards
18:20fall back.
18:24Lot's wife was,
18:25by the election of God,
18:27and by the hands of angels,
18:29saved from the overthrow
18:30of the wicked.
18:32We, by the same deep counsel
18:33of God,
18:34have been translated
18:35from death into life.
18:37She perished
18:39in the very way
18:40of safety.
18:41Let him that thinks
18:43he stands,
18:43take he,
18:44lest he fall.
18:47Lot's wife
18:47is the type of those
18:49who fall
18:49from baptismal grace.
18:57Any measure of descent
18:59from our baptismal grace
19:00is a measure
19:01of that same decline
19:02and which the end
19:03is hopefully
19:04a fall away from God.
19:09I say it is a measure
19:10of the same movement
19:12as a day
19:12is a measure
19:13of a thousand years.
19:16It is a state
19:17and inclination of heart
19:18which differs
19:19from absolute apostasy
19:21not in kind
19:22but merely in degree.
19:26We must learn
19:26from this example
19:27that all such falls
19:29away from our baptismal grace
19:31are great provocations
19:33of God's most
19:34righteous severity.
19:37The sin of Lot's wife
19:39was not only
19:39disobedience
19:40but ingratitude.
19:43There are two things
19:44which God hates
19:45more than anything.
19:48Backsliding
19:49and lukewarmness
19:52and there are two things
19:54which he will avenge
19:56an alienated heart
19:57and a will
19:59at war with his.
20:05But if these things are so
20:06how can we hold fast
20:08to our steadfastness?
20:11There is no
20:12other sure way
20:12but only this
20:13ever to press on
20:15to a life
20:15of deeper
20:16and deeper devotion
20:18to a sharper
20:19awareness of sin
20:20and repentance
20:22and more earnestness
20:23in our prayers
20:24to a more sustained
20:26consciousness
20:27of God's
20:28continual presence
20:29and to a
20:30keener watchfulness
20:31against the first
20:32approach of temptation.
20:34But one or two
20:35plain rules
20:36is all that can
20:37now be offered
20:37in particular.
20:39First of all
20:40beware of remembering
20:42past faults
20:43without repentance.
20:46The recollection
20:47of our sins
20:48is safe
20:48only when it is
20:49a part of
20:50our self-chastisement.
20:53To look back
20:54upon them
20:55without shame
20:55or sorrow
20:56is to offend
20:57again
20:58to the same degree.
21:04Another thing
21:04to be aware of
21:05is making excuses
21:06for our present faults
21:07without making
21:09an effort
21:09to correct them.
21:11Nothing so wears
21:12down the sharpness
21:13of conscience
21:14and dulls
21:15its perception
21:16of our actual state
21:17as excusing
21:18ourselves.
21:21Be aware
21:22of these particular
21:23forms of temptation
21:24of which you have
21:28already been held
21:29in their power
21:30or sacked
21:31perhaps your better
21:31resolution.
21:36Our Lord
21:37in order to press
21:38upon us
21:38the great law
21:39of our self-determination
21:40to help us
21:41to be honest
21:42with ourselves
21:43carries us
21:44into the heart
21:44of things
21:45as if they are
21:45in startling fashion.
21:49He holds up to us
21:50three typical instances
21:51of sudden
21:52sharp and divisive
21:54separations
21:54which the crisis
21:56of his coming
21:56will produce.
21:59people that look
22:00the same now
22:00will be seen
22:01to be different.
22:02The day will
22:02declare the difference.
22:04Great occasions
22:05evolve character
22:06and create divergence.
22:08But these divergences
22:10have their roots
22:11long before
22:11in the dark places
22:13of many
22:14and many
22:15a secret determination.
22:18In the closest
22:19of friendships
22:20in the most familiar
22:21intercourse
22:22in the meeting
22:23of the same kind
22:24of circumstances
22:25divergences
22:26grow and grow.
22:28Separations
22:29are being evolved
22:30more and more
22:31decisively
22:32and infinitely.
22:34So powerless
22:35so less than nothing
22:37are circumstances
22:38so impotent
22:39to produce a result.
22:42So imperious
22:43is character
22:44so free
22:45from the control
22:45of the very circumstances
22:47which are
22:48its daily occasion.
22:51when Christ
22:52comes
22:53when he meets me
22:54then shall I
22:55know myself.
22:57Underneath us
22:57now
22:58yawns the pit
22:59of failure.
23:00Close to us
23:01is the weakness
23:02born of past
23:03indulgence.
23:04But above us
23:05and with us
23:06is God
23:06our refuge
23:08our strength
23:08after them.
23:10God
23:10who will not
23:11be trifled with
23:12who will not
23:13let us make excuses
23:14because he loves
23:16our real selves
23:17too well
23:17and sees that
23:19they will not
23:19help us.
23:21Let us turn to him
23:22who is our only hope
23:24amid the treason
23:25of our will
23:26and the disloyalty
23:27of our heart.
23:30Let us turn to him
23:31as those who have
23:32trodden the same
23:33road before us
23:34turned in their
23:36desolation.
23:39Nevertheless
23:39I am always
23:40by you.
23:41You have held me
23:43in your right hand.
23:46Thus kept
23:47and consecrated
23:48the busiest life
23:49may be the
23:50truest to God
23:51and the most
23:52monotonous
23:52occupation
23:53may be the
23:54most fruitful
23:54and the very
23:56distractions
23:56and infirmities
23:57that beset us
23:58and the memories
23:59of old sins
24:00that haunt us
24:01may drive us
24:02closer to God
24:03and we
24:05with all our
24:06consciousness
24:06of weakness
24:07and sin
24:08may be found
24:09to be his own
24:10in wish
24:10and heart
24:11and hope
24:12in that day
24:13of separation
24:14when the eagles
24:15shall be gathered
24:16together
24:16when every life
24:18shall openly
24:19declare
24:20its only true
24:21and real
24:23desire.
24:28Let us pray.
24:32Grant we beseech
24:33you merciful Lord
24:35to your faithful
24:36people
24:37pardon and peace
24:39that they may be
24:41cleansed from all
24:41their sins
24:42and serve you
24:44with a quiet mind
24:45through Jesus Christ
24:48our Lord
24:49Amen
24:55May the Lord bless us
24:57and keep us
24:58from all evil
24:59bringing us
25:00to everlasting life
25:03Amen
25:04and keep us
