00:25Wow. Sandy Baskin, I'm Jeff Phelps. Coming up here in the 11 o'clock hour, Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will
00:33chat and we'll have it for you right here on 92.3 The Fan.
00:36And, of course, all press conferences on 92.3 The Fan are brought to us by Expert Renovations, expertrenovationsllc.com.
00:45And then at noon, it'll be Todd Munkin. So get ready. It's a big day. It's a big week.
00:51Browns against the Baltimore Ravens. We're going to get back to baseball, by the way.
00:55Later in the show, Chris Rose, Baseball Today on John Boy Media.
00:58And, of course, from the NFL Network, he's going to join us at 1.
01:01Special guest tomorrow, too. I won't give it away. Maybe we'll give it away a little bit.
01:05I think you should give it away right now.
01:07Oh, no. I'll just tell you, we have another current Major League Baseball manager who's going to join us tomorrow.
01:12Current.
01:13Oh, that's good. Looking forward to that.
01:15Huh. What league is this person in?
01:18Major.
01:20Major. Major League.
01:21Major League, yes.
01:22That'll be good.
01:23Yes.
01:23All right. I look forward to that. That'll be great fun.
01:27This is huge this week.
01:29I know. It's only the sixth week of the season, which, by the way, this season is flying.
01:34Don't you think?
01:35It is.
01:35This thing's flying.
01:38I think we'll have 11 more after this.
01:39I think baseball has actually led to our minds not completely being locked in on football.
01:48And the fact that we're already in week six is like, oh, my gosh.
01:51Anyhow, they're playing the Baltimore Ravens, who are in first place.
01:55And it looks like realistic chance, according to Adam Schefter, of Lamar Jackson coming back.
02:00Oh, that's disappointing.
02:05Nothing against Lamar.
02:06I don't want him to be a quick healer.
02:08I mean.
02:10Sprained left ankle.
02:11Don't want him to be a quick healer.
02:13He's really good.
02:14I like watching that guy play football.
02:19And he's a better passer, Andy, than I think he gets credit for.
02:23He comes back this week.
02:25It's a different ballgame.
02:28I don't necessarily know that it's a bad thing if he's playing against us because he's got a sprained left
02:33ankle.
02:34I mean, it's still you go out there and you play and you're like, OK, well, he said I do.
02:41I want to.
02:41I would.
02:41I'd rather see Snoop.
02:43Yeah, I'd rather play.
02:44Although last week, you know, he he helped them beat Atlanta on Sunday night.
02:48So, yeah, he did a nice job.
02:49Yeah, he did do a nice job.
02:51I, you know, if Lamar Jackson's not 100 percent, that could be to our advantage.
02:55So.
02:57I'd rather have a an 80 percent.
03:00I'd rather have 100 percent.
03:03Tyler Huntley going against the Browns than an 80 percent Lamar Jackson.
03:06Yeah, I'll buy that.
03:07I understand that.
03:07But there's always, you know, we always we always just kind of dive into.
03:10Oh, well, he's he's coming back.
03:12He's healthy.
03:13But I mean, our guy's always truly healthy when they come back, especially this time
03:17of year.
03:17Nobody's healthy in the NFL after week one.
03:19No.
03:20So we'll see.
03:21At least it seems that way.
03:22And we'll find out.
03:23And then if he doesn't have a good game of how we rushed it, we shouldn't have brought
03:26him back so soon.
03:27Oh, that's too bad.
03:28Oh, I.
03:29And if they put him on the field, it's because they know he's good to go at this point in
03:33the season with or good enough to beat the Browns with a record of four and one and a
03:38one game lead in the division.
03:40They're not bringing him back unless they think he's healthy.
03:43I would think that they think, OK, if we have to, we can go to Cleveland.
03:47We can beat the Browns without him because the Ravens are confident.
03:50Even if they don't.
03:52Hey, even if we don't beat him, we're still in first place in the division and he'll be
03:55healthy and we're not going to mess with it.
03:57So I would think if if Schefter is right and he has a good chance to play, it's because
04:02they think he's really good to go.
04:05They won't put him on the field this early in the season.
04:08If he's I wouldn't think and jeopardize his health long term.
04:13I agree with you on that, but sometimes we rush guys rush back sometimes.
04:17So I'm not saying like if you're hanging your hat on that to get a win, you you're a little
04:23desperate.
04:23Like I'm a little desperate to say that.
04:25So again, and by the way, you know, guys, when they go to tackle him, oh, his left ankle.
04:32What does that how's that go again?
04:35Well, you know, hey, he's still might be a little bit sore in that sprain left ankle.
04:39Oh, man.
04:40Let me fall on it.
04:41Is that what you're saying?
04:42I'm not saying let me fall on it.
04:43Let me fall on his ankle.
04:44But if you happen to tackle him by his left leg, I mean, I mean, you just never know what's
04:49going to happen.
04:49Andy, Andy, Andy.
04:51It's the NFL, Jeff.
04:52Things like this happen.
04:54Things like this happen.
04:55I'm not saying deliberately try to hurt a guy, but it's the NFL.
05:00You know, isn't it amazing?
05:02And this one still amazes me.
05:04When he came out, so many teams thought, yeah, let's play him at wide receiver.
05:11And he's on the board for the Ravens to take it 32 in the first round of the draft.
05:17That's just painful.
05:18You know, that's the Baker, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen draft.
05:24And there's Lamar at 32.
05:26Is he the best of the bunch?
05:30Maybe.
05:32It's he and Josh Allen.
05:35And he was on the board at 32 and Josh Allen was on the board at seven.
05:42Look at the Browns, Jeff, for a second.
05:44Would you not be intrigued by getting Taylor Green out on the field somehow, some way?
05:50Whether he's saying hike or not.
05:53I know he wants to play quarterback.
05:56I know he doesn't play any positions.
05:58I know he doesn't want to put it in anybody's mind that he could play tight end.
06:04But, man, he's an athlete.
06:07He is an athlete.
06:08And we saw it earlier this year.
06:10I'd love to figure out a way to get him on the field, even if it's one or two plays.
06:16And if you're not getting the productivity out of your tight ends, again, I understand what you're saying about Jackson.
06:21He's not a tight end.
06:22You asked him.
06:23Yeah, I know.
06:24He said, no, I'm a quarterback.
06:26They asked him in high school if he wanted to play.
06:27Then he got mad at you and he came over and he bopped John the head.
06:30He did not get mad at me.
06:32He just said, I'm a quarterback.
06:33I thought he was very cordial about it.
06:35I just, we all watched him play during the preseason.
06:39We're like, and so I just asked the question.
06:41I'm like, hey, has any coach ever asked you to, maybe if you're not playing quarterback, would you be willing
06:47to play another position?
06:48And he was just like, I'm a quarterback.
06:50Jack, and then he said in high school, I think they asked him and he respectfully declined.
06:55I'm assuming he did.
06:57But, I mean, the guy's an athlete.
07:00I just want to get him on the field and get him in the end zone.
07:03I don't care what position he's playing.
07:04I don't.
07:06You don't what?
07:06Want to get him on the field and get him in the end zone?
07:09Here's the thing.
07:10And Mary Kay Cabot brought up the same thought on her Orange and Brown Talk podcast.
07:15Get him on the field, a package of plays for him.
07:17Yeah.
07:18I just think this.
07:21He's a sixth round draft choice.
07:22He's a rookie.
07:23And you have three quarterbacks ahead of him.
07:25And, again, he's the one quarterback on the team that intrigues the snot out of me.
07:29He's the guy I like.
07:31I just don't think he's – I guess I'd rather be protective of him and give him the opportunity to
07:41thrive.
07:42And I don't know if a package of plays will do that for him.
07:48And then –
07:49What's the alternative?
07:50No plays?
07:51Practice?
07:52Well, yes.
07:53Third string emergency quarterback.
07:55Jeff, is the guy an athlete?
07:56And that's my question.
07:57Okay, but what are you going to do with him?
07:58I'm going to put him at tight end.
08:00Why couldn't you go out there and throw it through?
08:01He's not a tight end, Andy.
08:02You're not going to put him at tight end.
08:04Why not?
08:05He's not a tight end.
08:06That's why.
08:07Jeff.
08:09All right.
08:10So what –
08:11Come on.
08:12You go to a three tight end set.
08:14He's a quarterback.
08:14He told you when you asked him.
08:16Jeff, he can –
08:17All right, so put him in a wide receiver spot and then run that silly.
08:22You've never played tight end or wide receiver, but good luck to you.
08:25Oh, no, because we've never tried to take track athletes and make them into wide receivers either.
08:30Well, not during the middle of the season.
08:32It doesn't have to –
08:33Jeff, he's been here since day one.
08:35And has he played any tight end or wide receiver?
08:38Has he played any tight end or wide receiver?
08:40Have you seen him run the ball?
08:41I've seen him run the ball in the preseason.
08:44In the one game, they let him play.
08:47They're not going to play.
08:48Did you ever watch him run the ball in college?
08:50Yes.
08:50They're not going to let him play anything other than quarterback.
08:54So the question is, are you going to give him a package of plays at quarterback?
08:58I'm not going to do that.
09:00Because that means on game day, with all these injuries you're having, you're going to have another –
09:05you're going to have three active quarterbacks.
09:07And I'll be honest.
09:08If I'm Shadur, I'm thinking, wait a minute.
09:10You're playing this guy?
09:11I guess I'm out of here.
09:13I would think if they even run a package of plays for Taylor Green –
09:16Shadur's not going anywhere.
09:17I would think if they run a package of plays for Taylor Green, it almost means he jumps Shadur Sanders
09:23on the depth chart.
09:25I just think you're putting – I think you're putting way too much into it.
09:28Here's what I think.
09:29I think if you wanted to throw Taylor Green out there, maybe you wanted to throw a wildcat play out
09:34there.
09:35So I don't –
09:36That's a different story.
09:37I don't want to jump him over Shadur Sanders.
09:39I just don't want to do that.
09:41And he doesn't have three quarterbacks in front of him.
09:44He only has two.
09:45Because your other one, if you're going to bring him out, then you've got four.
09:48But you don't have to for 21 days.
09:50Or now we're down to what?
09:51I know.
09:52Half of that.
09:52The way it's structured right now, there are three quarterbacks ahead of him, at least in the thinking of the
09:59organization.
10:02If you're not getting productivity – say, Fannin's not having a good day, Whiteheart's not having a good day,
10:06and you're not – you're hesitant on your seventh-round pick in Carson Ryan,
10:12and you've got the opportunity to put the guy in the field, a talent is talent.
10:17You're not going to play him at tight end.
10:18He's never done it.
10:19Joe's in Strongsville.
10:20What's up, Joe?
10:21Hey, Joe.
10:22Hey.
10:22What's happening, guys?
10:24Big fan of the show.
10:25Thanks for listening.
10:26Andy, I've got to give you a little pushback, brother.
10:29That's fine.
10:30So the issue that the Browns are having at tight end is they don't have a talented in-line tight
10:35end that can block.
10:36Yeah, I agree with that.
10:37Fannin's an athlete he can receive, and his numbers are bad because Deshaun's not throwing him the ball.
10:42One catch for four yards and under three targets ain't going to cut it.
10:46Now, Taylor Green has never played tight end before.
10:49Do you have any idea how insulting it is to tight ends around the NFL?
10:52That you think he's just going to walk out and play?
10:55No, I'm not saying that.
10:56But what if you hand him the ball off?
10:57Or what if you throw him at wide receiver and bring him around?
11:00I'm talking about one play during the game.
11:02I'm not talking about running him a tight end for every play.
11:06I'd like to see Blake Whitehart get a little bit more time on the field.
11:09I mean, I'd like to – but they're not – I don't think they're opposed to having a three tight
11:13end set either.
11:15Why would you be opposed to that?
11:17Ohio State does it every weekend.
11:19I mean, I see it all the time.
11:21Well, the only thing is you're downplaying the nuance of the game.
11:24There's so many just technical things that go into –
11:28I get it.
11:29I understand that.
11:30But I also understand that athletes are athletes.
11:32Joe, thank you.
11:33And if he could – I mean, if he can get you in the end zone, isn't that what you
11:36want?
11:36I understand the game's technical.
11:38I also think we overthink this game way too much sometimes.
11:41And if you hand the guy the ball, let him go.
11:43We do that to Concepcion, right?
11:46He can run.
11:47But he does that.
11:48I get it.
11:49If they put Green on the field –
11:51The problem is that Green doesn't want to do it either.
11:53So that's another problem.
11:54It would be a quarterback.
11:55It would be a quarterback.
11:55It's just very hypothetical.
11:56That's all.
11:57And very fun.
11:58Deshaun Watson is going to be playing quarterback this week.
12:01He's going to be speaking here in the 11 o'clock hour.
12:04You'll hear him right here on The Fan.
