South African lawyer and former judge Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her contributions to human rights, peace, and international justice, leaving US President Donald Trump's hopes of receiving the prestigious award unfulfilled.

According to reports, Pillay has played an important role in defending human rights and promoting international law throughout her career. Early in her professional life, she defended Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists during South Africa's struggle against racial discrimination. She later served as a judge in significant international legal cases.

Pillay also headed a United Nations Commission of Inquiry investigating the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Last year, the commission concluded that Israel was responsible for genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Israel rejected the findings, describing the report as reprehensible.

Donald Trump's Nobel Peace Prize Ambitions

The announcement has renewed attention on US President Donald Trump's long-standing ambition to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump has repeatedly claimed that his achievements in international diplomacy make him deserving of the prestigious honor.

Speaking to reporters at the White House two days before the announcement, Trump said that no one in world history deserved the Nobel Peace Prize more than he did. He also claimed to have ended eight wars during his time in office.

However, Trump expressed doubts about whether the Nobel Committee would recognize his efforts, suggesting that the committee might not award the prize to someone like him.

Maria Corina Machado's Support for Trump

Trump has also received praise from Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025. Machado reportedly presented Trump with a medal associated with her award in January as she sought to secure American support for her political struggle in Venezuela.

Her gesture further highlighted Trump's efforts to gain international recognition for his claimed contributions to peace and diplomacy.

Pakistan and Other Countries Nominated Trump

Pakistan was among the countries that nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, alongside Cambodia and Israel. Azerbaijan and Armenia also reportedly joined the list of countries supporting his nomination.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has praised Trump on several occasions for his diplomatic efforts and initiatives aimed at establishing lasting peace around the world. Sharif has also expressed support for the view that Trump deserves consideration for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Despite these endorsements, the 2026 award announcement has once again left Trump's ambition of winning the prestigious international honor unfulfilled.
