A Flydubai passenger flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on September 30 after a serious incident reportedly occurred inside the cockpit.

The Boeing 737 flight, identified as Flydubai Flight FZ1073, was carrying around 170 passengers when the emergency unfolded. According to reports, the aircraft had been cruising at approximately 33,000–34,000 feet before making a rapid descent to around 17,000 feet. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft losing thousands of feet in a very short period before diverting toward northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Cockpit Altercation Triggered Emergency

Initial information from Flydubai and aviation authorities described the incident as an altercation between the captain and co-pilot. Later reports, citing Israeli officials and other sources, said the confrontation became violent and that one pilot allegedly stabbed the other with a knife.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain and appeared to attempt to crash the aircraft. However, the precise circumstances, motive and sequence of events remain subject to investigation.

During the struggle, the aircraft experienced a dramatic loss of altitude. Reports indicate that passengers and crew members became aware that something was seriously wrong after hearing disturbances from the cockpit and noticing the aircraft's unusual movement.

Passengers and Crew Helped Regain Control

As the situation developed, passengers people managed to gain access to the cockpit and help overpower the pilot involved in the confrontation.

Additional Flydubai crew members who were traveling on the aircraft also reportedly assisted in stabilizing the situation and helping the aircraft reach a safe landing.

Emergency Landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia

The aircraft requested an emergency landing from Saudi air traffic controllers and was diverted to Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk.

Tabuk Airport said it received the distress call at approximately 8:44 a.m. local time and prepared emergency services. The aircraft landed safely at around 9:45 a.m. All passengers were reported safe and accounted for following the landing.

The diversion was particularly notable because t Saudi Arabia do not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

Israeli Fighter Jets Were Reportedly Scrambled

The emergency signals also prompted heightened security concerns in Israel. Israeli military aircraft were reportedly scrambled while authorities assessed whether the incident could involve a hijacking or another security threat.

The aircraft had transmitted multiple emergency signals, including a code associated with possible unlawful interference.

Investigation Underway

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Israel are investigating the incident.
