00:01From defending Nelson Mandela to leading a panel that found genocide in Gaza,
00:06South African-born jurist Navi Pillai has won the Nobel Peace Prize for championing international law.
00:14So I think the fact that they recognize Navi Pillai is incredibly important and incredibly symbolically relevant.
00:20She has a lifetime of service in international law and human rights law.
00:23She spent the last 30 years working on various cases on Rwanda, on Palestine.
00:30She is currently also engaged as a judge here at the International Court of Justice.
00:34So by recognizing her and her individual massive contribution,
00:37I think this is also a symbolic sign that there are people in the world who care about international law.
00:43Hours after Pillai won the Nobel Peace Prize, the U.S. announced sanctions targeting the International Criminal Court.
00:51It is devastating because it's undermining some of the basics of law.
00:58That is that you make a separation between those who are administering a country,
01:05the administration, and the legislative power, and the judicial power.
01:12These three should stay apart.
01:14It should not be that the administration can dictate what the judges should do in what cases.
01:22And that's a real threat to, I would say, basic democratic values.
01:30Pillai's Nobel win could be seen as a rebuke to Trump and Netanyahu,
01:35both critics of her commission's genocide findings on Gaza.
