00:19What does your, as the chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, think of this and how has this campaign-like activity by the president and his supporters domestically and internationally affected the deliberations and the thinking in the committee?
00:36In the long history of the Nobel Peace Prize, I think this committee has seen any type of campaign, media attention.
00:45We receive thousands and thousands of letters every year of people wanting to say what for them leads to peace.
00:52This committee sits in a room filled with the portraits of all laureates and that room is filled with both courage and integrity.
01:01So we base only our decision on the work and the will of Alfred Nobel.
01:15We were able to reach Machado just before the announcement.
01:27It came as a surprise, but she also stated that this is a surprise for the entire opposition and the movement in Venezuela who stood up against the dictatorship in the elections of 2024.
01:40Last year, the opposition in Venezuela and Maria Corina Machado did a tremendous job of standing up to the dictatorship in the country.
01:53And by using the elections, they were giving hope to a new generation in the country that once, one time in the future, they can make that peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
