Willard and Dibs react to something Dave 'Softy' Mahler told them yesterday about Kyle Shanahan and Mike Macdonald. Would you rather have the league's best offensive mind or best defensive mind leading your team?
Transcript
00:00One other thing I want to hop into with you, with everybody, 888-957-9570.
00:06Look, we told you yesterday, our friend, air quotes, Softie Mahler, from KJR in Seattle,
00:14he's really just coming on to talk bleep, and we were going to talk bleep back at him,
00:18and he did, and we did, and then we moved on with our day.
00:21There's a little bit of a tongue-in-cheek nature, obviously, to the entire conversation,
00:25but he did make one point that I wanted to circle back and talk about today.
00:31Take a listen. Softie Mahler, KJR professional, Seattle bleep talker.
00:37Over Shanahan, because I always want the defense. Always, always, always, always.
00:42I wanted the defense, not to make a college analogy, but I'll do it anyway.
00:45I wanted the Michigan defense against Washington with Pennix and those guys at Dunes A in 2023,
00:52but I couldn't have it because I had the offense, and the offense got shut down.
00:572013 NFC Championship game. Guys, I swear to God, one of the greatest throws I've ever seen a quarterback make
01:03was Colin Kaepernick rolling to his right, jumping up in the air, both feet off the ground,
01:08and hits Anquan Bolden for that touchdown. You guys remember that play?
01:11Of course.
01:11Against the Seahawks? Phenomenal. Phenomenal.
01:14But it was the defense that won the day as well in that game.
01:17I will always, always want the great defense of mine over the great offense of mine.
01:23Okay. Raises hand and fully, passionately disagrees.
01:30Now, let me think about this. I know in professional sports, college sports too,
01:36historically, when there's a great defense that plays a great offense, what happens?
01:40The defense tends to more often than not, not always, the defense tends to more often than not win.
01:47But that wasn't the question, nor was it the answer.
01:51He said he wanted Mike McDonald over Kyle Shanahan because he wanted the defensive mind over the offensive mind.
01:58No, no, no, no, no. Disagree.
02:01So, Seattle might have the best defense in the league again.
02:04I think that's still developing.
02:06They may win this football game on Sunday.
02:08But if you look around the league and, in general, ask yourself,
02:13would you rather have an offensive-minded head coach or a defensive-minded head coach,
02:20to me, there's no question about it.
02:23Who do we love around the league?
02:24We love McVay.
02:26We love...
02:29Andy Reid.
02:30Andy Reid.
02:31Why Ben...
02:32Ben Johnson.
02:33I don't know why the hell I...
02:34It's a Friday, yeah.
02:36So, we love Kevin O'Connell.
02:39Or O'Connell.
02:40Or Ben Johnson.
02:40Or whatever.
02:42We love Sean Payton.
02:43We love Liam Cohen.
02:45What do all of them have in common?
02:47These are offensive dudes.
02:49Now, what do we got on the defensive side of the ball?
02:52Sure, there's Mike McDonald.
02:54He heads up the group.
02:55We got Mike Vrabel.
02:56He won coach of the year.
02:58That was a joke.
02:59And then in the offseason...
03:00He's won it twice.
03:01Took his team on a ride.
03:02He's got Spagnuolo with Andy Reid.
03:04Right, but Spagnuolo is not a head coach.
03:07Right.
03:07Again, I'm talking head coaches.
03:09I get what you're saying.
03:09How's Robert Sala doing?
03:11Maybe that's not fair.
03:12Maybe he's...
03:13D'Amico Ryans.
03:13D'Amico Ryans.
03:14Look, these are good coaches.
03:15I'm not saying you can't be a good coach.
03:17Aaron Glenn.
03:18But if you look around the league at what tends to succeed from the head position,
03:24have a great defensive coordinator,
03:27but have a great offensive mind that runs your team,
03:32and the re...
03:33Like, that is clear to me around the league that it leans offense.
03:37And for McDonald and the Seahawks,
03:39it is my concern for them in this game.
03:42It has nothing to do with the fact that your defense is awesome.
03:46I don't think your offense is very good.
03:48I think the Niners have a huge advantage when their defense is on the field in this game.
03:53I don't like their offensive line.
03:55I hate their run game.
03:56And their quarterback is solid, but more circumstantial than Brock, in my opinion.
04:03And that's how I see this one.
04:05Do the Seahawks have an advantage on the Niner offense?
04:08Maybe.
04:08Maybe.
04:09But I think the Niner defense has a massive advantage on the Seahawks offense.
04:12And I think that when we look at this topic and we start to pick our way through,
04:16I do think that it becomes more of a complimentary football conversation
04:20because Spagnuolo and Andy Reid's a great example where Spag's defense has been awesome,
04:26and Andy Reid's offense has been usually good.
04:29It's been mostly good.
04:30And at times, the defense is better, and you get to the big games.
04:34And Spagnuolo is a coach who's had Shanahan's number in the Super Bowl
04:37to the extent that they've held him under 30,
04:40and that's been the McDonald blueprint.
04:42And now you turn to Brian Fleury, who is their new offensive coordinator
04:46because Kubiak got the Raider job.
04:47And so is he learning on the fly?
04:50And are they, as an offense, still trying to find their way?
04:53I think that's fair.
04:54But also, you lost your top one, two, three running backs.
04:58Walker left for free agency.
05:00Charbonnet has been hurt.
05:02And your highly drafted kid out of Notre Dame is now hurt as well.
05:05And so they're hamstrung in ways that kind of mirror what the 49ers have gone through.
05:10And so when we have these conversations about offensive-minded this or defensive-minded that,
05:16I think about the Detroit Lions where Dan Campbell's a defensive guy primarily,
05:21and he's out there biting kneecaps.
05:23And when he had a great offensive coordinator, then they were a phenomenal team.
05:27But now that they don't have that, they're not nearly as good.
05:30And so I think about this in terms of complimentary football.
05:34And for the Niners right now, you've got a former head coach in Raheem Morris whose scheme,
05:40Raskeem Morris, it's been phenomenal.
05:42And I think that they're in a great spot because of that.
05:45Yeah, not saying a defensive mind can't be a good head coach.
05:48I'd lean offense, though, for my head coach.
05:50I would lean offense when picking a head coach.
05:53I think you look around today's NFL, and you can see that.
05:57Let's go to Skills in Vallejo.
05:59Skills, thanks for calling in.
06:00What do you have?
06:03Hello, Willard, and hello, Dibs.

06:44Then the guy who signs checks, tried to buy some sex.
06:46Now the bench disappeared.
06:48Oh, boy.

07:51If Seattle more hell.
07:54You knock the O-line flat.
07:55That big thorn will go splat like an egg that fell.
07:58I'll close the prediction.
08:00Spoken with conviction.
08:0249ers will win 31-2-10.
08:04The true pain infliction.

08:07Word.
08:08Yeah, Skills.
