Brad Holmes needs to make a move to bolster the Lions defense but how bold does he need to be?
Transcript
00:03Good morning. Thanks for getting up with us. We're talking trades. Clock is ticking for
00:08Brad Holmes. Got two weeks till the deadline and you already see a moves made around the
00:13NFL. So we've circled corner and we've started circling some names. I think knowing they
00:19were in on Joey Porter Jr. and I'm still frustrated they didn't make that move, but knowing they
00:24were in on him says they agree with us that corner is their big need and specifically what I look
00:30to
00:30see from the corner they bring in is someone they can put one-on-one. Someone who has to be
00:36able to
00:36play man coverage. That's why I circled Rick Wallen at 6-4 Super Bowl champ. Not going to cost an
00:43arm
00:43and a leg. Brad doesn't have to hurt too much to make that deal. It's the one I circled, but
00:50he's
00:50not the only name out there and John's done a good job throwing different names out. Cooper DeGene,
00:55Zion McCollum, those are guys on multi-year deals that may appeal in a different way.
00:59We got one text that says I would rather add a player with a multi-year deal. I don't want
01:04a
01:04rental. This would just be a need again next year. Get somebody and extend them if necessary.
01:09Go out and get somebody and then says after that get someone to back up Gibbs. Well, and that's why
01:14the trade value that you've got to give up is greater for guys even though the player not might not
01:20be
01:20as good, but the what you give up may have to be more because you're going to have multiple years
01:28of control. Cooper DeGene, I may change my jeans.
01:34You're getting people excited this morning, John.
01:36What would you give up for DeGene? Whatever it is, I'm not sure Brad would do it, but I'd love
01:40to have
01:40him.
01:43We need a corner bad. Joey Porter Jr. will be far and away the best DB moved to the deadline
01:47and we could have had him at a reasonable price. Brad messed up big time.
01:51I do think he'll be the best corner moved. I said it at the time. I'm bummed about it, but
01:55I could just replay the show from a month ago for you or we could try to move forward. I
01:59think they
02:00do need to still address it as best they can. Rick Wallen has been bad for years. DeGene is a
02:05nickel slash safety, which we don't need hard pass on both. Okay. Corner play can be really tough and
02:11tricky. Rick Wallen grades out 17th among all corners on PFF. I'm not telling you their gospel.
02:17If you've watched him, there is some boom and bust, but I don't think it's fair to say that
02:21he's been quote really bad for years. No.
02:25I want Brad to be bolder than Z'Darrius Smith.
02:28I don't look forward to his presser when he mocks us like he did when he drafted an edge
02:32Josh in St. Clair Shores.
02:36By the way, that edge hasn't really done much this season. Not a
02:41pressing concern because they've gotten more than enough from their pass rush,
02:44but Derek Moore has been very quiet. Oh, yeah.
02:46I mean, it's almost non-existent. Yeah. Guys, the answer is Dante Jackson from the
02:51Chargers. I'm not thrilled bringing in a 30-year-old shorter corner, but that's the
02:54move I expect, Tom and Flatrock. I think they will do something. It may underwhelm us,
02:58but I do think maybe it's what Tom says. That's the move. Could be. There's another
03:04one, but I'm from the Chargers. I'm not going to steal it because Robert wants to
03:08bring the next guy up. Look at you. Robert and Dearborn, you did not have your
03:14thunder stolen. Okay. Very nice. I'm glad. Yeah. Last year at this time, I was screaming
03:21from the rafters to get Roger McCreary, and Los Angeles took him late for adding. But this
03:32year, it's going to be Cam Hart. It's your tall corner. He's on a rookie contract for a year and
03:37a
03:37half. You give up what Dallas gave for Porter. He's just as good as Porter. So what do you think?
03:486'2", 210 pounds, 25-year-old guy. His coverage grade, he grates out in the 18 of 103
04:00cornerbacks in his coverage grade. Multi-year, right? This year and next? Yeah, on a rookie
04:07contract. He's a player the Chargers probably don't want to trade. Well, they don't want to,
04:13but he's not their best corner, and they want to keep their best corner, which is, I believe,
04:18still? Was it? Yeah, he's also on a multi-year deal. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Yeah. So they want to
04:23keep still, so they're going to want to do something and get more collateral to, you know,
04:29so, you know, if you give up a second and a fifth, you know, they might do it. Well,
04:35there it is, Robert. That's what I wanted to get at. I'm not trying to put you down or
04:39the name, because I think it would make sense. I say he's going to be a guy they don't want
04:43to trade, which is code for Brad Holmes is going to have to pay. Right. And you said a second
04:48and a fifth. I don't know that the Lions are comfortable making that deal based on the fact
04:51they didn't do it for Joey Porter Jr. Now, maybe there's a bit of a buyer's remorse.
04:55Only for this year. Yeah. Only for this year. Yeah. And like you said, Cam Hart grades out
05:01just as well as Porter does, and he's a tall corner, and you have for a year and a half
05:07on a rookie deal. I hadn't heard the name, but I don't hate the suggestion at all.
05:13He's got two interceptions so far this year. Yeah. Came out of Notre Dame. They're becoming
05:17kind of a corner factory. It seems like it. Yeah. So the thing with Rick Woolen, he's
05:2319th right now overall PFF. I think you might have said 17. Oh, yeah. Okay. Sorry. And we're
05:28just splitting here, but it's only I wanted to put something together here. Okay. So
05:31DJ Reed is 16th right now. Yeah. He's played well the last call it three weeks, two weeks.
05:37Yeah. Especially last week. His PFF grade just in the game was 84. Now, is that the branch
05:43effect? Well, but he played well against Arizona too. Yeah. But much better offense
05:48with Green Bay. Yes. And respectable QB who had been on fire. Just something to watch
05:54here in terms of Reed improving with Branch being on the field now. I thought about that
06:00and then I wondered, are we targeting the wrong spot in the secondary? If you love the
06:04impact Branch has made, but you don't think Joseph's going to return, should they add
06:07another safety? Well, that's why DeGene playing safety for you or other safeties that
06:12are out there like Buda Baker. Buda Baker, if that's the, if he's available, he's my
06:16number one target. I just don't think he's available. So just maybe Brad's got is kind
06:20of waiting to just see how this looks one more week with Branch on the field, a linebacker
06:26upgrade potentially. You know, there's a lot to think about here. The problem Brad Holmes
06:32is facing right now is he's got these things that he needs to figure this out right now because
06:37you need to be proactive in this trade market. It's starting early. Yep.
06:42You got fire sale teams, you know, and there's going to be more like I don't need to go get
06:47what you need to identify and go get what you think helps this defense the most before
06:52sitting there until November 10th and half the market's gone. Right. You don't want to
06:57get Joey Porter jr. Because other GM saw what happened yesterday and they're like, OK, I
07:02better start jumping on this now. And so instead of waiting until, you know, three fifty nine
07:07twenty like Scott Harris would. Yeah, you got to scoot up in the chair. Every other
07:12GM is scooting up in their chair right now thinking, OK, yeah, I mean, phone calls are
07:16being exchanged as we speak. The market's more active early than normal and with bigger
07:22name players and more impact players like I don't need to see how they look against Minnesota
07:29to pull the trigger on a trade. Right. If they lose the game, I'm going to go. Great.
07:37Let's not let this slip away. Let's make an addition. And if they win the game, I'm going
07:41to go, boy, we're chasing a Super Bowl contender status now. Right. Let's cement it.
07:47Are the Texans sellers? Who would they be willing to sell a minor move that some people want
07:53is a backup running back. Would you dare throw a seventh back at the Texans and bring back Montgomery?
07:58Montgomery. These are the things that you need to look at. You're not the first person
08:02to mention it is is is I know he was out with an injury for a little bit. Is he
08:07a hundred
08:08percent healthy? He might not be. It's not like he's grabbed that backfield, which was
08:14the whole point of a week one. And since then, it's been silence. What he marks is the back
08:19down. Yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, yeah, there are there are a lot of options and we've already
08:25seen two interior linemen moved. We've seen a defensive lineman moved. We've seen we've
08:31seen a corner moved like it's and it's only going to from here until November 10. It's
08:38only going to continue to intensify yet. You and I are circling corner at the same time
08:42if it was off ball linebacker and they just wanted to focus on that and say our improved
08:47play from branch can help us. There's the back seven of the defense needs to be addressed.
08:52That's number one. Number two would be, as I've said, a linebacker and number three would
08:59be a help for Jameer Gibbs so that he doesn't have to carry the load. He had 34 touches this
09:06past weekend against Green Bay. Yeah, it would be like it's an insurance policy. So quickly
09:11the Texans are on a buy this week. He could be back Montgomery as soon as the next week,
09:15but the Texans are OK. They're on a buy. They're sitting back and they're analyzing. Are we throwing
09:21in the towel? We buried Texan Tom. I don't know why they stay in the home. Now their
09:26reasoning still is potentially the division. They did beat Jacksonville. And because of
09:31that, they're not that far back. I don't know if they would sell yet. I think they play week
09:36nine and see what they look like and go from there. Week nine is right before the trade deadline.
09:40The Lions will play two games. We're all focused on this week. They're going to play Minnesota.
09:44They'll also play Miami. Then they'll hit the buy. And then here's the other reason to get
09:47a deal done sooner. Then they go to Germany the week of the deadline. That deadline's
09:52Tuesday and they're in Germany on Sunday. Like, let's get somebody in before we have
09:56to throw them on a plane and fly them halfway across the globe. Have they talked about when
09:59they're leaving for Germany? I don't know that we have those details. They're leaving Thursday.
10:04So yeah, anybody they trade for that Tuesday is going to have a lot of travel on a freaking
10:10flyer miles. Bring all your clothes with you. Just a giant. Yeah. Tell your family. You'll be
10:15home in about three months. All right. Clearly the deadline has come early and we'll talk
10:22more about it throughout the show. Michigan fans. Is there an undercurrent to go back
10:27to Bryce? We'll get to that at 735. Halloween candy draft is next. It's 97 one.
