00:00It's Dan Campbell talking about their penalties, the lack of discipline.
00:04Good morning, 97-1.
00:05I guess I should just say morning.
00:07Tech says it's the worst sports weekend in at least a decade.
00:10I don't believe it's because Costa jinxed anything, but he really is a jackass.
00:15So, thank you.
00:16We are getting plenty of that this morning.
00:18Tech says, can they leave Calvin Shepard in Carolina?
00:20And another says, I was ready to pull a Colorado State.
00:23They fired their D.C. mid-game.
00:26Yeah.
00:27Walked right off the field.
00:29Done.
00:30Let's get to Pete and Warren.
00:31Pete, good morning.
00:33First of all, Cookies, you didn't have nothing to do with these losses, brother.
00:38So, don't take any blame from these idiots that say that.
00:41Oh, no.
00:41I'm going to tell them.
00:42Come on, man.
00:43We've got to put it where it lies the most.
00:45That's with Costa.
00:47Oh, come on, John.
00:49You've got to be nicer than that.
00:50That's your partner there.
00:51Be a nice boy.
00:52I know you lost this weekend, and I love seeing that, by the way, because I'm a Spartan fan.
00:56Well, hey, how's your team doing?
01:00Listen, the part that upsets me, guys, and I'm going to get passionate here with you, and I promise you
01:05I won't cuss, okay?
01:07When I'm watching the press conference with Dan Campbell, and he's talking about the defense, okay?
01:14And he says, first conference, he's like, well, you know, we've really got to have turnovers.
01:19We have to have turnovers.
01:20And I'm thinking to myself, wait a minute.
01:22The concept of defense is you have to play good defense first.
01:27You've got to stop the run.
01:28You've got to be in position.
01:30You've got to make it difficult for the receivers to get the ball.
01:33You've got to put pressure on the quarterback.
01:35And then the dessert of the whole thing is getting the turnovers.
01:39His philosophy is, oh, no, our defense has to be that we have to get turnovers every game, and we
01:46get a few sacks, and that's going to let us win.
01:49I'm here to tell you if that's his thought process, him and Brad Holmes need to take the long train
01:55out of this town because that's garbage.
01:59That is not how defenses go.
02:00You have to play good defense first before you can get the turnovers.
02:06That's my opinion.
02:07I'd love to know your guys' opinion.
02:09Oh, you're not wrong.
02:10I mean, you do have to play defense.
02:11You've got to play the basics first.
02:14And, I mean, we've been talking a lot about things during the break and before the show.
02:21It's such a simple defense right now.
02:24And it feels like now it's you always feel like you have simple answers.
02:29You line up in man and you run man.
02:31You line up in zone, you run zone.
02:34There's no disguise.
02:35There's no trying to confuse a quarterback.
02:38There's no nothing to try and trick somebody into making a bad decision and creating one of those turnovers.
02:46If that's what your emphasis is, you've got to create some confusion.
02:50There's none of that.
02:52And then on top of it is you're not calling defenses that your team can actually execute.
03:01I always reference the 0-9 Saints because that's the Saints team that won a Super Bowl.
03:07Dan Campbell is still playing.
03:09I think it was his final year as a player.
03:12Sean Payton is his mentor.
03:13That team was offense-led, defense no good, but they were number two in takeaways and they won the Super
03:20Bowl.
03:20That's not a consistent formula to win.
03:23If you're constantly praying to the football gods to get a bounce with the oblong ball, that's because you're not
03:30playing good defense.
03:30You're looking for bailouts, right?
03:34You can't rely on turnovers.
03:36You can't rely on turnovers, but why was Chicago's defense so good last year?
03:40Well, they had a ton of turnovers, but you know that's not going to sustain year over year.
03:44What have they done so far this year?
03:45They've actually played just better defense this season.
03:47And they've been getting turnovers.
03:48That's a huge part of being successful defensively, but you've got to put yourself in position to even get those.
03:54If you're not covering receivers, who's there to get the turnover?
03:59No one's getting a punch out.
04:00You're not tipping a pass.
04:01Yeah.
04:032-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
04:05Another says, I don't care how much anyone likes him.
04:07It's clear Shep is not the guy.
04:08Make a change.
04:09Don't wait.
04:09Ridiculous.
04:10Donnie in for Myers.
04:12And I'll just say this.
04:14I don't disagree, but who are you going to put in that position?
04:19Who's going to be your defensive play caller?
04:21And maybe it's just anybody could do what is being done now.
04:25It's just making the statement.
04:27Well, yeah, you gave the stat.
04:30They are on pace to give up the most points in NFL history.
04:32Yes.
04:33So can it really get worse if someone else is running the defense?
04:37I would say not.
04:39I mean, it can always be worse, just probably not a lot worse.
04:46First caller who mentions Joey Porter Jr., I'll throw my radio out the window.
04:50An army of Joey Porters couldn't save this team, John and Lake Orion.
04:54Look, I'm not saying Joey Porter makes that game an auto win, but you do need better coverage,
04:59people, right?
05:00If it's Joey Porter Jr., who, by the way, was really good in Dallas over the weekend,
05:04if he's the guy on Tett McMillan, does that neutralize their best target, the guy that
05:09was killing you and breaking your back all day?
05:11Does that change the way you can scheme your defense?
05:13No, they just throw it to the tight ends.
05:14Okay, fine.
05:15I mean, look, you can say JPJ, and he had a good game yesterday, actually.
05:18That defense gave up 30 points.
05:20I'm just glad he's healthy.
05:22Back healed up quick.
05:27So I'm taking my strays, but this one's for you, John.
05:30Oh, do you feel like you misdiagnosed last week's performance now?
05:34You and TJ lit into Costa for being negative, but it feels like that read is closer to reality.
05:41Well, they didn't give up a double-digit lead this time.
05:45They didn't have a double-digit lead.
05:48Get to the phones.
05:49It's a bad defense.
05:50It is.
05:51Let's go to Steven Taylor.
05:52Steve, good morning.
05:54Good morning, gentlemen.
05:55How are you?
05:56Ah, well, it's a Monday.
05:57Yeah, I don't need to ask that question.
06:00There's so much to start with.
06:02Originally, I just said fire them all, but I know that's not realistic, but it's just
06:08embarrassing to watch this team.
06:11From Brad Holmes, who can't do his job right, and one of the callers gave him credit for
06:19his picks.
06:19Okay, he had some picks early on, but let's look at the last few years of the picks.
06:25Not that good so far.
06:27That's a problem.
06:29You got a coach that, without two great coordinators, is really showing his ineptness.
06:35I don't know about how you think about it, but fourth and 20, I'm screaming at the TV,
06:41it's not realistic.
06:42Take the three points.
06:44Now, they didn't drive on the last drive, but it could have made a difference if they
06:48only needed three instead of seven.
06:50I don't know, but just the whole thing, the defensive coordinator, the offense is, again,
06:57you can't blame them, because I do agree that it's demoralizing to watch what's happening
07:01on the other side of the ball.
07:02But these slow starts are killing us.
07:05And so the offensive coordinator is questionable.
07:08So, I don't know, you got to blow this whole thing up.
07:11I just don't know.
07:12It's just really embarrassing.
07:17So, the fourth and 20, they end up trying to run the little razzle-dazzle hook and ladder,
07:21because what do you have in your playbook to get 20 yards that close to the end zone?
07:25The bigger issue is, why was it fourth and 20?
07:27Like, it's got to have its spot.
07:29It's fourth and 10, and they don't even get lined up to run the play in time, and it's
07:32a delay of game.
07:34And then you go, oh my God.
07:36Like, Dan wanted to save his three timeouts.
07:38Well, it's even at the beginning of the game, you don't have enough guys on the field to
07:41kick a field goal.
07:41Yeah, you're right about that, too.
07:43But I'm saying, you take your initial penalty to make it fourth and 15, and you're going,
07:46that's, you can't take a dumb penalty like that.
07:49You're killing your team.
07:50And then you take another penalty, another five-yard penalty to make it fourth and 20.
07:54Like, that's when I invoke those letters S-O-L.
07:57It's because that's the stuff that dumb, same-old Lions used to do.
08:03Can't get stops, Patricia-level defense, 0-16-level defense, and you're taking those penalties
08:08in key moments?
08:09Yeah.
08:09So, 248-539-9797.
08:13Let's get to, let's get to a break.
08:16I see, Greg.
08:17I'm going to keep us on time today.
08:19248-539-9797.
08:20Knock out as many calls as we can to wrap the hour next, 97.1.
08:23Now there's no condä¾›shop.
08:23Let's go.
