00:22Weird night at the rink last night.
00:24Good morning, 97.1.
00:25Jim Costa, John Jansen, Heather Park,
00:27Gov and Greg behind the glass.
00:29Good morning.
00:30Good morning.
00:31Going to be a lot of weird nights at the rink.
00:33No kidding.
00:34It's a Wednesday.
00:35We've got the power surge coming up at 635.
00:37John's top teams in the NFL.
00:39Got a fanfare or foul that comes from
00:43people here in the city of Detroit
00:45when it comes to going to Lions games.
00:47Is this a problem?
00:48We'll get to that.
00:49Let's start with what happened at the rink last night.
00:52Dylan Larkins booed when he touches the puck,
00:55cheered when he scores a goal.
00:57He's not sure if he should celebrate or not.
00:59And then he's the first star of the game and gets cheered.
01:04All in front of about 14 people.
01:07The get-in price was a nickel and they couldn't even pass the flag around pre-game.
01:12It was a very weird night at the hockey rink.
01:17Can we just continue to say the word dysfunctional?
01:21It was disorganized, dysfunctional from...
01:25And I'm not calling the fans dysfunctional,
01:28but they're in this dysfunctional, disorganized space
01:34where, yes, you are booing Dylan Larkin
01:38because he demanded the trade.
01:39The sea has been ripped off his jersey.
01:43But he goes out there and it's...
01:46You start 0-2.
01:47No Dylan Larkin.
01:48I think we've all said...
01:50And I think even if you are never going to be a Dylan Larkin fan again,
01:55he is dead to you.
01:58You have to at least admit that this team is better
02:03with Dylan Larkin on the ice than without.
02:08He's their only quality NHL center.
02:11And he is a very good NHL center.
02:13I think sometimes people in this city have forgotten
02:15because they don't like the trade request
02:17that he's coming off a career high in goals,
02:20kills penalties, wins face-offs,
02:23scores on the power play.
02:25He's a good hockey player.
02:26And if you are in that dressing room,
02:29you want to win hockey games, right, John?
02:31If you go to work every day as a professional athlete,
02:33you don't want to go 0-2 to start the season.
02:36You don't want to be staring down 50 losses.
02:39You want to win hockey games.
02:41And Larkin will help them win hockey games
02:43so guys will buy in.
02:44It also helps that he's sticking up for guys.
02:47Big moment at the end of the second period,
02:49he's jumping to DeBrinckit's defense,
02:51getting in the fray.
02:52You know, I think he's trying to ingratiate himself
02:55by playing well and sticking up for his teammates.
02:59So I don't know if that matters to the fans.
03:02Like, where do you stand with Dylan Larkin?
03:05Has he paid the price, took the booze,
03:07says, I'll be a man about it?
03:10I think there's conflicted feelings.
03:11So what we want to do this morning
03:13is talk to Red Wing fans about it.
03:152-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
03:17John, I'm not conflicted.
03:19Dylan Larkin has every right to request
03:21a trade out of this mess.
03:24He's a good hockey player.
03:25And you should want him to play well
03:27for his trade value and for his teammates
03:29and for any semblance of being competitive.
03:33Is there any world where people have said,
03:38I don't want him to play good for his trade value.
03:40I just want him to play good for us.
03:42And that they want him to still be here.
03:45I think that's where there's this very disorganized.
03:48Like, as fans, this is your chance to speak.
03:52Like, what is it you want
03:54out of the Dylan Larkin situation?
03:59I would like him to be here
04:01because they don't have enough good hockey players.
04:02And I don't think you're going to get
04:05a commensurate return.
04:06No.
04:07Now or in the offseason.
04:09I just don't believe it.
04:11Yeah, like, I don't want to trade Edmondson.
04:13I don't want to trade Larkin.
04:13I don't want to trade Debrinkin.
04:14I want to add good players to the roster
04:16and be competitive.
04:17And I don't mean that he doesn't have value,
04:20but his value is going to be in future picks.
04:22And I don't want any part of that.
04:24And it's like, you know, they keep saying,
04:27well, we're not going to go through a rebuild.
04:30And if they're not going to go through a rebuild,
04:32I don't see a world where Dylan's not a part of the future.
04:37Look, there may be a world where they stall out
04:39and they have to rebuild, right?
04:44Yeah.
04:45In which case, Larkin would be a very attractive trade piece.
04:49Okay, so if that were to happen,
04:51say the trade request never came.
04:53And if they were to stall out now,
04:55moving on from Iserman and you've got an interim GM,
04:59even if they get to a regular GM at any point,
05:03who knows,
05:06if they were to stall out
05:07and have to eventually admit the fact that,
05:10hey, this build isn't working,
05:11we're going to have to go through a rebuild,
05:14then Dabrinkit, Larkin,
05:16all of the marketable players
05:18would be sold off for pieces.
05:20I think that's part of the issue, John,
05:22is you asked me what I want.
05:23I want them to be better than they are.
05:25Like, I want to keep Larkin and Dabrinkit
05:26and I want to keep this and that.
05:28They threw it off season away.
05:30They don't have a general manager.
05:31The reality of this,
05:32and that might be part of the conflict,
05:34the reality of this might be
05:35what you want doesn't matter.
05:36They're going for a rebuild.
05:37Whether Sean Horkoff or Chris Illich
05:38wants to acknowledge it,
05:39this hockey team's going to rebuild.
05:42They threw it away.
05:42You know what I'm saying?
05:43They don't have anybody running the show.
05:44They're not going to make the playoffs again.
05:45What do we call it at that point?
05:47But in that world,
05:48I want Larkin to increase his trade value.
05:50Yeah.
05:50So I want him to play well.
05:52I'm certainly not upset
05:53that he had two points last night.
05:54I just don't want to admit that
05:56that's the path that they probably have to go.
05:59Yeah, they've done it to themselves.
06:01Don't want to live in another three years
06:04of no postseason.
06:06Trust me.
06:08Or relevant hockey.
06:09And so then you get back to,
06:11I know it's one game with Dylan Larkin,
06:14but we've got many more to look back on.
06:19And there's a history,
06:20but in this very short season so far,
06:25they didn't score a goal
06:26in the first game against the Rangers.
06:29They didn't score,
06:30or they scored two against Winnipeg.
06:32Now they have an offensive explosion of five.
06:35I don't expect five a game,
06:36but I do expect that you are going to score more goals
06:40with Dylan Larkin than without.
06:43Reminder, without Dylan Larkin,
06:44Andrew Kopp was the team's number one center.
06:47It's a tough look.
06:49Yeah.
06:49So look, by all accounts,
06:52he still wants to be traded.
06:54He did not rescind the trade request.
06:56Nobody has indicated that.
06:58If he wants to be traded,
07:00fans are going to feel a certain way about him.
07:03I think he has every right to want out.
07:05And if he's going to put his head down
07:08and work until then,
07:09I'm not going to be mad at him.
07:11And I am curious with everything
07:14that's happened since then,
07:16with Steve Iserman being relieved of duty,
07:20and then not having a general manager,
07:23but having an interim one,
07:24and then Simon Edmondson,
07:26which seems to be an obvious choice
07:28to be able to give him a contract
07:30that he's earned.
07:31You're not giving it to him.
07:32He's earned a contract.
07:34With all of that dysfunction going on,
07:38how are people still mad at Dylan Larkin?
07:41He obviously saw a lot of this going on
07:44behind the scenes,
07:45and now we're getting a glimpse
07:47as to what is going on.
07:49Right.
07:50That's why I say I don't blame him.
07:51I'll read you some of the texts.
07:52We got open lines.
07:53248-539-9797.
07:56I'm embarrassed by the booze for Larkin.
07:58After everything that's happened lately
08:00with the Wings,
08:01it's an S show in the front office.
08:02Who wouldn't want out?
08:04Bob and Rochester.
08:05Very next text says,
08:07Screw Larkin.
08:07Ready for him to go.
08:08Trade his ass.
08:10Another says,
08:10If he's so good,
08:12why doesn't the rest of the league want him?
08:16Guys,
08:16every single hockey team
08:18would take Dylan Larkin.
08:19Yes.
08:20Every single one.
08:21On his contract especially.
08:23The reason he hasn't been traded is
08:24he has a no-trade clause
08:26that can limit the pool of teams
08:28and the Red Wings
08:29don't want futures back.
08:30Well,
08:31what do you think
08:31the good teams are going to offer?
08:34They're not going to say,
08:35Well,
08:36yeah,
08:36here's our top line center
08:37for your top line center.
08:38There you go.
08:38Let's just move mashed potatoes
08:40on the plate.
08:41Tech says,
08:42He needs to go.
08:42He started this mess.
08:44Oh,
08:45buddy.
08:45How do I break it to you?
08:48This mess is much bigger
08:49than Dylan Larkin
08:50and he didn't start it.
08:51So,
08:51they can't sign
08:52Simon Evanson
08:53because of Dylan Larkin?
08:54Yep.
08:55they can't get
08:57another GM
08:57because of Dylan Larkin?
08:59Yep.
09:01That's what I'm supposed to believe.
09:02I'm disappointed
09:03Larkin wanted a trade
09:04but I understand
09:05why he wanted to.
09:06I'm more upset
09:06at the Wings
09:07not making moves
09:08to improve this team.
09:09So,
09:10I think that is
09:11a very legitimate text.
09:13You can be disappointed
09:14that
09:15the guy that was
09:16born and raised here
09:18went to school here
09:19has been here
09:21for so long
09:21wore the sea.
09:23You can be disappointed
09:25that he
09:26requested a trade
09:28but I think
09:28you have to have
09:29enough
09:30awareness
09:31because there is
09:32more insight
09:33into the dysfunction
09:34that is the
09:35Wings right now.
09:36Yeah.
09:36I mean,
09:37again,
09:37get in price last night
09:38with fees.
09:40Seven bucks.
09:41Seven dollars.
09:42It's a great time
09:43to take the family down.
09:45Sure.
09:47Most didn't
09:48but yeah.
09:49No,
09:49but I mean,
09:49it's,
09:49you know,
09:50if you're looking
09:50for something
09:51to do on a
09:51Tuesday night,
09:53it just speaks
09:54to dissatisfaction
09:55school night.
09:56It speaks
09:57to a dissatisfaction.
09:58So,
09:59we have a little bit
10:00of Larkin audio
10:00we can mix in
10:01this morning
10:02because he did speak
10:03and he didn't sound
10:04like the sad robot
10:05that he normally
10:05sounds like.
10:07He was with
10:08Daniela Bruce.
10:08Greg,
10:08can we play
10:09him talking
10:10about the emotions
10:11of skating last night?
10:13Yeah.
10:16Yeah.
10:30Goal
10:30and assist
10:32mixing it up
10:33a little
10:33to defend
10:34his teammates
10:35and a win.
10:36Their first win
10:36of the season,
10:37not a coincidence
10:38comes with 71
10:39back in the lineup.
10:40He addressed
10:41the booze.
10:42Why don't we
10:42get to that next?
10:44Dylan Larkin
10:45talking about
10:45getting booed
10:46and how this reception
10:47is going to be
10:48for him this year.
10:49We'll play that
10:49coming up next.
10:50It's 97.1.
