00:03Lots going on in Detroit sports, the biggest story of which is, of course,
00:06the Dylan Larkin saga with the Detroit Red Wings,
00:10in which it already was looking like it was going to be an offseason
00:14that might have some movement.
00:16And then the Red Wings' best player, or arguably their best player,
00:19certainly one of their best players, goes out and says,
00:23tells Steve Eisenman he wants to be traded.
00:25And the news cycle spins and spins and spins,
00:27and we've taken all the information we could find today.
00:30We put it in one place.
00:31We call it the Red Wing Trade Center, spelled C-E-N-T-R-E, news aggregate thingy.
00:38All right, Scott, we'll start with a rumor about somebody other than Dylan Larkin,
00:43Sebastian Kosa, NHL rumor report, quotes Elliott Friedman, saying, quote,
00:50I think Edmonton has some interest, and maybe it does happen,
00:53but this morning I was told it's nowhere near to as far along as being portrayed.
00:57Meanwhile, Kevin Weeks, per sources, says, quote,
01:01I'm told Kosa would be on the move to Utah amongst interested clubs,
01:08also maybe the Rangers or Senators, quoted in that tweet.
01:13Scott, what do you make of the possibility of Kosa?
01:16Because the rumors got out there that it was a done deal to Edmonton.
01:20That was going around social media.
01:22I mean, I've said for months that I think Sebastian Kosa is going to be traded.
01:25I think the second that Postova got the nod over him in the playoffs,
01:31you've got to think, okay, that's the end for Sebastian Kosa,
01:34and they have to make their decision on him because he's getting close to a free agent time here.
01:40So I think it makes sense.
01:42They have plenty of depth with goaltending prospects, with Postova and Augustine,
01:48and they've got a couple other guys that have fared pretty well at the lower levels.
01:52So it makes sense to move him.
01:54Does it make sense to move him on a separate deal from Dylan Larkin?
01:59I'm not sure.
02:00It depends what teams you're looking at.
02:03But he played, Kosa played his minor league hockey at Edmonton.
02:09So I guess that's why the rumor is going to get started there.
02:11But these other teams have, they're deep in prospects, particularly the Mammoth.
02:17They've got a lot.
02:18So I definitely would expect him to get moved.
02:21I'm just not sure if it's going to be moved separate from Larkin or with Larkin.
02:24So the one thing I wonder about when a rumor starts around that it's a done deal,
02:28it makes me think that here's what's possible.
02:33Edmonton has a trade package that Detroit would accept,
02:37but Eisenman's going to keep shopping.
02:39So I always wonder when I see rumors that something is a done deal,
02:45that that might be just a misinterpretation of,
02:49well, Detroit would accept what Edmonton's offering,
02:51but they're not going to take it just yet.
02:53They're going to keep looking and see if they can get more.
02:55So I'm kind of intrigued by this a little bit,
02:57because Kosa's a name that's been floating around for a long time
03:00and is considered still a reasonably good goalie prospect.
03:03All right, next up, NHL rumor report,
03:05quoting Chris Johnson on his radio show, the Athletics Hockey Insider,
03:10I don't see Steve Eisenman making a bad deal
03:12just for the sake of having the problem disappear.
03:16I think he's willing to dig in.
03:19What do you make of this?
03:21I agree with that 100%.
03:22I don't think Eisenman is looking at this situation and going,
03:26oh, no, I have to move him.
03:28My back's against the wall.
03:30Dylan Larkin signed for five more years at a very reasonable price.
03:35And, you know, even for what the Red Wings are looking at,
03:38they've already paid him the majority of the money on the contract
03:41because it was front-loaded.
03:43Now, for teams that want to deal with him,
03:44it's still the annual 8.75 or whatever it is
03:48that they're going to have to go against the cap.
03:50But from a Red Wings money standpoint,
03:52he's already gotten paid a decent amount of this.
03:54So I don't think there's any reason for Steve Eisenman to panic
03:58or feel like he's being rushed into making a move.
04:02I think he should get full value or what he deems full value for Dylan Larkin.
04:06And the worst-case scenario is that they don't make a trade this summer
04:10and Dylan Larkin has to come back to the Wings.
04:13Now, part of that's going to be a negotiating thing, right?
04:16Because you're trying to get Larkin to open up how many teams he's willing to go to.
04:21So we'll see how this plays out.
04:23But, you know, I can't imagine that Eisenman was too happy when,
04:27okay, what teams are you looking at?
04:28And here come three names, and they're all, you know, top contenders.
04:32Good luck with that.
04:34There have been two high-profile cases when Steve Eisenman was in Tampa
04:38of trade requests.
04:41One of them was Jonathan Druin.
04:44Yeah.
04:45He requested the trade in November of 2015.
04:50Do you know when he got traded?
04:52Was it a year later?
04:54It was June of 2017.
04:55Yeah, because I remember he had to come back to the team,
04:58and he came back, and he was an improved player.
05:01Yeah.
05:01Like, it was an attitude adjustment type thing, but he was also a lot younger.
05:05The point being, Eisenman has dug in in the past
05:08and hasn't sold his player for what he deemed the right value.
05:15At least he did it in Tampa.
05:17Now, it feels like everything he did in Tampa worked better
05:20than everything he's doing in Detroit,
05:21but there's an example of what he had a similar challenge in the past,
05:25which brings us to the second part of this.
05:28Pierre Lebrun says,
05:30my prediction, and it hasn't happened yet,
05:32Steve Eisenman will go back to Dylan,
05:34if it hasn't happened yet, excuse me,
05:35Steve Eisenman will go back to Dylan Larkin
05:37and extend that trade list.
05:40There's no question in my mind,
05:41if it hasn't already happened, it will.
05:44Which brings us to the second time he had a player that requested a trade.
05:47And Martin St. Louis,
05:49do you know how deep his list was when he told Steve Eisenman he wanted me?
05:53I do not.
05:53It was one team.
05:54Was it Montreal?
05:55It was one team, and it was the New York Rangers.
05:58And he ended up spinning Martin St. Louis
06:03into two first-round picks,
06:05because one was a second-round pick
06:06that could become a first-round pick.
06:09And that, at the time, the Rangers capped him, Ryan Callahan.
06:12That is a great trade for Tampa,
06:16given that they traded a 38-year-old,
06:18and the list was one team.
06:21So Eisenman's been faced with short lists before,
06:24and he pulled off a great trade in that particular instance.
06:27But I agree with Pierre LeBron.
06:28If he hasn't already asked him to expand the list,
06:30he will,
06:31because the hockey world
06:33is kind of making fun of Larkin's list.
06:36Not Detroit people.
06:37Right.
06:37Everybody is making fun of this list.
06:39Yeah, I think he's getting lit up right now,
06:40and rightfully so.
06:41But again, I keep going back to this.
06:43It's a negotiation.
06:45You know, if you're going to ask me,
06:47hey, I'm asking for a trade.
06:50So, okay, where do you want to go?
06:52Well, here's my first choice,
06:53my second choice, my third choice.
06:55And that's where I'd like to go.
06:57And then, okay, present that.
06:59And after maybe,
07:01I don't know how many seconds it took,
07:02but I imagine Steve Eisenman was like,
07:03great, yeah, we'll work on this.
07:05Where else?
07:07All right, and final note here.
07:09Of the teams on the list,
07:12which are Vegas, Florida, and Minnesota,
07:14there was a trade proposal
07:15from the Minnesota Wild
07:16that was printed on The Athletic
07:18where the Red Wings get goalie
07:20Jesper Volstead,
07:23forward Danili Uroff,
07:24and forward Charlie Strammel
07:26from Michigan State,
07:28Minnesota against Larkin,
07:29and Sebastian Kosa.
07:31How would you feel about this return?
07:34Because this seems to be the one
07:35that has the most traction
07:37as a possible deal.
07:40Strammel went to Michigan State,
07:42played a year there.
07:43I think he also played at Wisconsin,
07:46and was 44 points in 37 games
07:49for the Spartans last year.
07:50He was really good last year.
07:51He's a good player.
07:51He's a really, really nice player.
07:53Physical player.
07:55And I like him.
07:56And Wolstead is,
07:58I mean, he was the guy
07:59that was taken after Sebastian Kosa
08:01in the draft,
08:01but he's made it to the NHL,
08:03and he's very highly regarded
08:04as a goaltender.
08:07But they already have a goaltender
08:08in Minnesota,
08:09so that's why he's on the trade block.
08:11The Red Wings don't need one.
08:13So, you know, trading for,
08:16trading Kosa as part of it
08:17to get, I just,
08:18this doesn't seem like the right deal.
08:20This sounds like,
08:21okay, we're desperately trying
08:22to find a way to get Dylan
08:23to one of his places he wants to go,
08:25and I'm not willing to help him out.
08:27I don't think that works for me.
08:28Nobody likes his trade.
08:29Let me just say that.
08:31It seems to be the one
08:31that has the most traction
08:32of the athletic trades,
08:33but nobody seems to think
08:35that this would be
08:35a good trade for Detroit.
08:37I'm not as worried
08:38about getting Wolstead,
08:39and the reason is
08:41because the Red Wings,
08:43yes, they're loaded
08:44with young goalies.
08:45Then they start trading
08:46those guys off for players.
08:48Like, you can then trade,
08:50you know,
08:51move Augustine.
08:52I bet Augustine
08:53would get you something good.
08:54Well, this is why
08:55I've also said
08:56that I think if you're looking
08:57at a team like Minnesota,
08:58I think you're going to have
08:59to get a third team involved.
09:00You might.
09:00Because it's going to involve
09:02goaltenders,
09:02and if you're doing that,
09:04then let's get somebody else involved
09:06to get even more assets
09:07for Detroit to make it make sense.
09:08But going straight Detroit-Minnesota
09:10for that package,
09:11and the Red Wings giving up
09:12COSA too,
09:12that doesn't work.
09:14Yeah, I like it because
09:15they have a guy
09:15who's NHL-ready
09:16and who's considered
09:17better than COSA
09:18at this point.
09:19It would take a
09:21bitter pill of swallow
09:22because you could have
09:22drafted him.
09:23Instead, they took COSA.
09:25And then watch.
09:25Watch COSA have a back.
09:26Well, yeah,
09:27COSA actually played
09:28outstanding last year.
09:29He just got outplayed
09:30at the end
09:31and Postova got the chance
09:33to play in a playoff.
09:33Between Postova,
09:34Augustine,
09:35and COSA,
09:35they have a wealth
09:37of goalie riches
09:39and you could start
09:41moving guys.
09:42You just start moving guys
09:43and trading in those assets
09:45for assets on the blue line.
09:47They got a fourth too.
09:48There's this guy,
09:48Rudy Guamond,
09:49there's another one
09:50who's awful good.
09:51Awfully good.
09:51All right,
09:52there you go.
09:53That is the very latest
09:54on the Dylan Larkin trade front.
09:55Also,
09:56Sebastian COSA
09:57will continue to monitor it
09:58and, of course,
09:59be updating it
09:59moving forward.
