00:01Well, it is quite a joy to see Allie and Addie and Sister Pam. She's back. Let's give the Lord
00:09a hand. Thank you Lord.
00:13We are Yael. Lord Willy will be here with us soon enough, but today we are Yael. We greet you
00:18virtually in my room for the lights.
00:21Well, today I don't have really anything in terms of an illustration for y'all except to ask a question.
00:30Have any of you cooked something at home that, I don't know, maybe left a smell inside the house?
00:38Or maybe your parents do. They cook something and it needs a smell, right?
00:43What's one of the ways that you get rid of the smell?
00:50Open the window. Open the window. Yeah, that's a good one. What else?
00:58I just go somewhere else. That's a great one too. Just go somewhere else. Straight up leave the premises and
01:05let the smell kind of dissipate on itself, right?
01:09Okay. But how about you, Addie? Did your parents ever make something where they began a smell? What do they
01:15do?
01:16They open the back of the window.
01:22The back of the window. The back yard. The back yard. And there's also the exhaust.
01:30Yeah, I hear your mom say they're going to make sauce. Okay. Well, I'll tell you what. There's another way.
01:36Those are all really good ways.
01:37But if ever, just, you know, this is not an ad, so please don't take this as an ad. But,
01:45Ali, tell them what the smell of this, first off, what is this?
01:49A candle. A candle, yes. Now, what is the scent of this candle? Hot fudge drizzle.
01:55Hot fudge drizzle. Go ahead and I'll open it up. Just kind of smell it, pass it around, pass it
02:02to everybody else.
02:03Does it actually smell like hot fudge drizzle? Do you want to eat the candle, maybe? Yeah? Yeah, it kind
02:10of smells like something that you would want to eat.
02:12Smells good? Everybody? Yeah? Oh, and just like so-so. Okay. Yeah. Well, thank you for humoring me with an
02:20illustration.
02:21This is the only one I can find really quick. That wasn't being used. We won't actually light it up
02:26today.
02:27But I want us to think of the idea of a smell filling up. In this case, if we were
02:33to, you know, use that to cover the smell of, say, like cooking and whatever else.
02:39It would fill the whole house. Could be one. But, uh, it wasn't on the screen.
02:43So let's all say the verse together. Begin with John 12, 3. We'll say the verse, then we'll say John
02:4712, 3 again.
02:48Together. John 12, 3. The sweet smell of the perfume filled the whole house. John 12, 3.
02:57Now, the story behind this is not that there was a smell in the house that they needed to have
03:03the sweet perfume going around, but there was a woman.
03:06Her name was Mary. Say Mary.
03:09Mary.
03:10This Mary was not the same Mary as Jesus' mom, but this is who we now know as Mary of
03:17Bethany. Say Bethany.
03:19Bethany was a city that was the hometown of Mary, of her sister Martha, and their brother's name, Lazarus.
03:29The same Lazarus that Jesus said, Lazarus, come forth, and he, you know, rose again from the dead.
03:35The most important thing about this story, though, is that Mary of Bethany understood what Jesus came to do.
03:43That he was not just a good man, not just a good teacher, but that he was the King of
03:48Kings, the Lord of Lords, God in the flesh.
03:52And when Mary saw that, Jesus was there dining and reclining with all the people, kind of like the people
03:58you see here.
03:59She took this really expensive bottle of perfume, broke that bottle, and poured it all over Jesus' head and down
04:07to his feet and anointed him that very day.
04:10Guess what? The sweet smell of the perfume filled the entire house.
04:15The same way, whenever we, as followers of Jesus, are around others, there should be a smell, not a real
04:24smell, of course, but a figurative smell that we are different and that we fill every place we go with
04:32the perfume, if you may, of Jesus, with the light of Jesus, and with the love of Jesus.
04:38Hopefully the candle and hopefully the story will remind us of just that.
04:43Now, one more time, John 12, 3, the verse in John 12, 3 together.
04:47John 12, 3. The sweet smell of the perfume filled the whole house. John 12, 3.
04:56Let's hold our hands, bow our hands, close our eyes, and let's pray together.
05:00Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, who was not only a good man, only a good
05:13teacher.
05:14But most of all, he was, as is the Son of God, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords.
05:25Help me, by your Spirit, to offer my life as a sweet, smelly perfume unto you and the world around
05:38you.
05:39In Jesus' name. Amen.
