00:25You see this pretty much all the time at the house. What is this first and foremost? Because I know
00:29they probably all can't see it.
00:31But what is this describing for the people? It's a candle. It's a candle. Is it just any kind of
00:37candle? What's special about this candle?
00:41It's scented and it's colored. It's scented and colored. What's the scent? Chocolate or a hot fudge drizzle.
00:50Hot fudge drizzle. When would you turn on such a candle? You said it's scented, but why would you want
00:58a scented candle?
01:00To make the house smell good. Yes, to make the house smell good.
01:07Now, let's get a sample of it. We're not going to turn it on, of course, for safety purposes, but
01:13go ahead and smell it.
01:16How does that smell?
01:17It smells good.
01:19It smells good. Like you want to eat it? Yeah.
01:23If you want to come and smell this later on, you're free to do so.
01:27It does smell pretty good, even to me.
01:29Now, that illustrates our verse, Kenzie.
01:32The verse for today.
01:35If you look at our belt, you can put it up for a squeeze.

01:39The sweet smell of the perfume filled the whole house.
01:45Well, do you know the story here?
01:51Have we gone over this? Maybe we haven't.
01:53But there is a woman whose name is Mary.
01:57Say Mary.
01:58That's not the same Mary as in the mother of Jesus.
02:01That's not the same Mary as in Mary Magdalene, which we'll meet later on in John.
02:07But this is Mary of Bethany.
02:10She's the sister of Lazarus.
02:12Remember Lazarus?
02:13Right?
02:14So, Lazarus' sister, Mary, was the one who, in this story, took a very expensive jar of what's called nard.
02:24Say nard.
02:26Wow.
02:26Nard is a fragrant, a very sweet-smelling kind of oil.
02:32And when Mary broke the jar, she put it on Jesus' head to anoint him.
02:38And that went all the way down to his feet.
02:41And she also anointed his feet.
02:43And even wiped the feet of Jesus with her long hair.
02:48Now, what's important here is that it says that the sweet smell of that perfume filled the entire house.
02:56In the same way that a scented candle can fill a house, a home, anywhere, a room, with that scent.
03:05That beautiful, sweet-smelling scent.
03:08The importance here, Kenzie, is not just because of the senses that we're learning about here, the smell in this
03:16case.
03:17But why this is important?
03:19Because Mary of Bethany did this as an act of faith and as an act of worship.
03:25She knew who Jesus was.
03:27Because he wasn't just a good man.
03:29He was and is the God man.
03:32He wasn't just one who had nice words to say to the people.
03:37He was and is the word of God.
03:40And because Jesus was and is who he was and is.
03:46Mary's act of worship and faith is memorialized, if you may, by this sweet smell of the perfume filling the
03:55whole house.
03:55And it even says in the Bible that the Lord, when he accepts an act of worship, it is like
04:03a sweet-smelling offering to him.
04:07That's the same exact concept here.
04:09Once again, let's read together.
