00:00Okay, I'd like to welcome everybody here on behalf of our organization, CAFE OC, which is Compassion and Peace Association
00:09of Canada, in conjunction with Living Rock.
00:15We have gathered today on this 10th anniversary of World Suicide Prevention Day.
00:23That actually is on Monday, but we decided to do it on Saturday, but we do have events in Hamilton
00:29on Monday.
00:31This is an annual event sponsored by the International Association of Suicide Prevention in collaboration with the World Health Organization.
00:41It is a day to promote community commitment and action to prevent suicide.
00:48Hey everyone, how are you all doing? Blake Bliss here.
00:50And so this is, we're just doing a quick shot for SBF.
00:54I know we haven't been doing some stuff for this, but I've had some ideas and this was one of
00:58them.
00:59Definitely suicide is a heavy topic and one that a lot of people don't want to discuss and don't want
01:06to have to commit to.
01:07But today we do want to commemorate the people who have lost their lives to this.
01:12And it's very tragic. I've myself lost two of my very, very dearest friends to suicide.
01:20So we've gathered here and we have doves that are going to be released into the air.
01:27And I hope that you enjoy the presentation and I'll show you what they look like.
01:33They're really cute.
01:35Now, as it goes, these little guys are trained to fly at least as far as Niagara Falls.
01:40But I have one little bird who I call my miracle bird.
01:44This little bird was actually weaned from his parents at the first week of July, which means he was only
01:51about eight to nine weeks at that time.
01:53My boss brought him to Cremor, which is a hundred kilometers away.
01:57And he said, well, he'll live here now.
02:00Okay.
02:01Generally takes about two weeks to associate a baby.
02:03Not a big deal.
02:05He didn't like that idea.
02:06He flew back to Toronto.
02:08So a hundred kilometers, no training.
02:10So it is surprising what these little guys can accomplish if just given the chance.
02:15And I think that kind of goes for a lot of us.
02:17If we just give ourselves a chance, I think we'd be able to accomplish a lot.
02:22Okay?
02:23Yeah.
02:24All right.
02:27You're like, okay, I have a bird.
02:28Now what?
02:30You're like, and bird.
02:33I'm going to get you to stand right here, just with your hip against this because it does have a
02:37tendency to open.
02:39For you, my big strong man.
02:41Look at the camera.
02:43Yes.
02:44And you're going to curl your thumb up on the line.
02:45That's perfect.
02:58So today is the, um, for me to commemorate the people I lost in my life and to suicide.
03:07Um, my best friend, Michelle, my very dear friend growing up, Nathan, meant a lot to me.
03:15And, uh, this is definitely a significant point in my life to release this and have this happen.
03:23And so I'm very grateful for this opportunity.
03:26It's the happening.
03:28Hey, hey, hey.
03:29Ladies and gentlemen, for thousands of years, the white dove has been a symbol of peace, hope, devotion, friendship, and
03:38goodwill.
03:39But above all, it is a symbol of love.
03:43Doves are well regarded by every culture and have been throughout history.
03:48Well before 2000 B.C. to the present day, doves were often depicted in various forms of art, mosaics, carvings,
03:57and engravings.
03:58Many of those are dating back over 4,000 years.
04:02Through these depictions, doves have also come to symbolize forgiveness, deliverance, and the renewal of life, as well as may
04:11you rest in peace.
04:12Today, as we remember our friends, our neighbors, our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and all of those who we have
04:22lost,
04:23we release first a single white dove to symbolize their souls passing from this world to the next.
04:32Whenever you're ready, just open your hands.
04:42We follow that with these white doves to represent the love of family guiding that soul.
04:48Whenever you're ready, just open your hands.
05:01Our remaining flock represents all the lives touched by the loss of that single soul.
05:12So you're ready to have your hands together.
05:36I feel not good enough
05:38And it's hard at the end of the day
05:43I need some destruction
05:46Oh, you will release
05:50Memories see through my veins
05:55Let me be empty
05:58I will wait this time, baby
06:02We'll find some peace tonight
06:07In the arms of the angels
06:13Fly away to fear
06:17From this terrible time
06:22And the endlessness that you fear
06:28You and my heart come with me
06:34I'll be celebrating
06:38We're in the arms of the angels
06:44May you buy some property
06:54So we're doing the dedication now for the tree
06:57And we've got a really incredible group of people here
07:01To dedicate and commemorate those who've lost
07:04So I'll show you guys the dedication
07:09Eckhart Tolle once wrote
07:11We depend on nature
07:13Not only for our physical survival
07:16We also need nature to show us the way home
07:19The way out of the prison of our minds
07:23We got lost in doing, thinking, remembering, anticipating
07:27Lost in maze of complexity
07:29And a world of problems
07:32I invite you to come
07:34And sit under the shade of this tree
07:36And use the opportunity
07:38To find your way home
07:40And to bask in the loving memories
07:42And thoughts of your friends and loved ones
07:46I would like for you to now think of a happy thought
07:48Or a moment that you cherish
07:51And Juna will share some ribbons
07:55For you to share those thoughts upon
07:58And we will tie those ribbons around this old oak tree
08:01And find blessings in it all
08:04Thank you
08:13The doves help me a lot
08:17Having people around you helps the most
08:21So I share with you this poem
08:25It's called I Am Still With You
08:28If it seems that I am far away
08:30On this empty and solemn day
08:33Just open your heart
08:34And know it's true
08:36That I am still right here with you
08:39If during the day things are going wrong
08:41Please don't feel sad and alone
08:44Just open your heart
08:45And know it's true
08:47I am still right here with you
08:50When night time falls
08:51And the day is done
08:53If you feel alone
08:55And sleep won't come
08:56Just open your heart
08:58And know it's true
08:59I am still right here with you
09:03Close your eyes
09:04Feel the warm embrace
09:06Sleep peacefully in these wings of grace
09:09If sadness you find in the morning light
09:12Don't feel alone
09:14And don't give up the fight
09:16Hold these words close
09:18And know it's true
09:20That we are always here for you
09:29We have some ribbon cut in there
09:32While my son Blake
09:35Who is the founder of our organisation
09:38Who he himself suffered from depression for 10 years
09:41He is going to be playing
09:43And maybe go inside
09:45Or bring some ribbon out here
09:47And please write something to a loved one
10:07And I wonder if my demons do watch me sleep
10:14The future past now is so dear
10:18Oh yeah, it sounds good
10:20Never doubt the wreck in my time light
10:28When shadows cast, we walk alone
10:32Maybe now that I met you
10:36I will be okay
10:41Perhaps the dream is dreaming us away
10:49I lost my very close friend
10:51Very dear friend
10:54My best friend actually in 2008
10:56And I wrote a song
10:58And I've never been able to play it
10:59And I probably won't be able to play it today
11:00But I'm just going to strung the chords
11:02Just to commemorate her
11:04And she told me a lot of very interesting things
11:06About my life
11:07And about my path
11:08And she definitely put me on a definitive path
11:10To helping others
11:12And to working to help others
11:13And from there I started
11:15I had a sense of purpose
11:16But now I really felt like I had a purpose
11:18And then she took her life
11:24She took her life in 2008
11:26She said that there wasn't going to be any trace of her left
11:29That I wasn't going to have any pictures
11:30Or anything like that
11:31And I had all these pictures
11:33And I didn't know how they were going to randomly be deleted
11:35But sure enough
11:37In the same way that she entered my life
11:38She left
11:39And I don't have a picture
11:41I don't have an audio recording
11:44Anything of her
11:45I have absolutely no trace of this individual
11:47I couldn't put a picture up on the tree
11:50Or anything like that
11:51So it's literally just devoid of all attachment
11:54And I wrote this song
11:57And I just called it Michelle
11:58We don't make it out of life alive
12:00And ultimately this life is an experience
12:03For all of us to embrace
12:04And to cherish
12:05And I feel a lot of us
12:07As in company excluded
12:10Take life for granted
12:11And some of the beauty that life has to offer
12:14And I feel that
12:17I don't take life for granted anymore
12:19Because of this experience
12:22And I just want to be part of the solution
12:24And not part of the problem
12:26So I've just now
12:28I feel like I've just dedicated my life
12:30To helping and serving others
12:34I feel like losing her was one of the best things
12:38And one of the worst things ever happened to me
12:40On one side of the fence
12:41It presented me with a whole new life
12:44And on the other side of the fence
12:45I lost the best thing that ever happened to me
12:47So it's like a double-edged sword
12:51But she always told me that
12:52That love was the essence of an apple
12:55And it was one of the last things she said
12:58Before she took her life
12:59And I just
13:03Yeah, I just
13:07I just really
13:08I really loved her
13:09A lot
13:09And she meant a lot to me
13:13And
13:13You know
13:13And
13:16I'm just glad that I was able to start
13:18And gather here with all you guys today
13:21And I apologize for not being able to finish the song
13:23But
13:25I wrote that song
13:26After she passed away
13:28And I've never actually been able to play it all the way through
13:30And I hope one day that I can
13:31But
13:33Maybe today's not the day for that
13:34And I want to do it justice
13:36But
13:37I
13:43Anyway
13:44I
13:45Just want to say
13:46Thanks a lot for being here
13:48And for supporting this
13:49Incredible event
13:50And
13:53You know
13:54We've all
13:55We've all been touched today
13:58I think the presentation with the dubs was
14:00Was incredible
14:01And
14:03I just wanted to
14:04Say that
14:05To anybody out there
14:06Who's
14:06Who's lost a loved one
14:07To
14:08To suicide
14:09Or
14:13Hopefully this video will help you with this
14:15And
14:15It may bring you some comfort
14:18Thanks very much
14:19Love you guys
