00:22Let us pray.
00:41Let us pray.
00:56May all arrogance be ever cast down.
00:59May all longing for the praise of men be extinguished.
01:02May all wantonness of self-conceit be quenched within me.
01:07Give me grace, O Lord, to flee any honour, to hate distinction,
01:11and to submit myself with readiness to all men for your sake.
01:17Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:20who, as a little child, did with your tender mother suffer persecution,
01:25and did not refuse to be carried as an exile fleeing into Egypt.
01:31Give me grace amidst the storms of adversity and the blasts of persecution and misfortune,
01:37to fly for refuge to you alone, to seek you, to call upon you.
01:44Grant that I may receive all things with gladness at your hands,
01:48may endure all things in meekness of heart,
01:51and may cleave with thanksgiving without wavering to you.
01:56Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:59who, when you remained behind in the temple,
02:02your mother sought for sorrowing,
02:05and at length with joy found you sitting in the midst of the doctors,
02:09hearing and asking them questions.
02:12May you so give and communicate yourself to me,
02:15that I may never be separated from you,
02:18and never be without the comfort of your blessed friendship.
02:22Drive sloth from my heart,
02:25dispel any dullness that is displeasing in your sight.
02:29Grant me perfect devotion,
02:31and such an ardent thirst after piety,
02:34that my soul may be so affected and possessed by it,
02:38as never to feel satisfied with worshipping you.
02:43Praise, honour, and glory be to you,
02:45who gave yourself up to live in concealment for thirty years,
02:50to be reputed by the Jews the son of Joseph the carpenter,
02:54and be subject to the commands of your mother and the same Joseph.
02:59May your grace, I beg you,
03:02root out and thoroughly pluck up
03:04from the innermost recesses of my heart
03:06any ambition and seeking of glory,
03:10that I may become belittled in my own eyes,
03:13and may love to be unknown and considered of no account,
03:17submitting myself to all,
03:19and obeying them for your honour.
03:22Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:25who did not refuse to come to the River Jordan,
03:28and be baptised there by your servant John.
03:33May you thoroughly cleanse me by your merits in this life,
03:38that freed from all vices and sins,
03:41I may be filled with the love of you,
03:44and long for my heavenly country.
03:47Make me, I beg you,
03:49before my soul quits this body,
03:52pleasing to you in all things,
03:54that, departing from this life,
03:56I may be for ever in heaven with you,
03:59to see you,
04:01to enjoy you,
04:02and to praise your holy name for ever and ever.
04:06Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:09who for our sake dwelt in the wilderness,
04:12amongst the wild beasts,
04:14and fasted and watched in prayer for forty days and forty nights,
04:19permitting yourself to be tempted by the devil,
04:21whom you overcame when angels came and ministered to you.
04:26Grant me grace to discipline, overcome,
04:29and bring into subjection my sinful flesh
04:32with its evil affections.
04:37Give me grace to be instant in prayer
04:39and all other spiritual exercises,
04:41and grant that with your continual help
04:45I may completely overcome sins of gluttony
04:48and may escape the snares and schemes of the devil.
04:54Let no temptations, I beg you,
04:56defile me,
04:57nor separate me from you,
04:59but may they rather purify me
05:02and unite and join me with you.
05:06Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
05:09who gave himself up to preach repentance,
05:13to call to you disciples,
05:15and from them choose the twelve apostles
05:16to be the special heralds of the faith,
05:20gathering together the children of God
05:22that was scattered abroad.
05:24Draw me after you,
05:26and powerfully excite my heart to love you.
05:30Do not permit me to neglect the grace
05:33with which you called me,
05:34but make me ready to despise the world
05:37and all perishable things,
05:39following you,
05:40taking your humility and charity as my example.
05:44Give me grace to look for you alone,
05:47and with earnest longing
05:48to sigh continually after you.
05:52Amen.
05:56O Lord, open our lips,
05:59and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:08O be joyful in the Lord,
06:13O be glad,
06:15serve the Lord with gladness,
06:19and come in light,
06:22present with a tongue.
06:25Be sure that the Lord,
06:29he is God,
06:31is he that has made us
06:34and not be ourselves,
06:37we are his people
06:40and the sheep of his master.
06:45O pray, O pray,
06:47to his peace with thy sin,
06:50and in tune in his God's great grace,
06:55be thankful unto him,
06:59and speak to the Lord of his name.
07:04O the Lord is gracious,
07:08his mercy is everlasting,
07:13and his truth and glory,
07:17and from generation to generation.
07:27Glory be to the Father,
07:31and to the Son,
07:34and to the Holy Ghost,
07:38as it was in the beginning,
07:42is now and ever shall be,
07:48world without end.
07:55Amen.
08:05O the Holy Ghost,
08:08O the Holy Ghost,
08:13and do ye judge a thing that is right,
08:18O ye sons of men,
08:21May you imagine me sitting in your heart upon the earth
08:28When your hands here live in your hands
08:34Dear God, they are proud
08:38Even from their mother's womb
08:42As soldiers they are born
08:45Because they are sick, Christ
08:50They are generous as a poison of a servant
08:56Even like the dead mannail that stalketh her days
09:03Raised with girls in the wheel of my son and child
09:09Chalking where I saw my dream
09:16Break them deep upon your house
09:20Spice the toll on the land of the Lord
09:26Let him fall in a cross and drive in a place
09:32And breathless choice that I must let him be put in love
09:38Let him consume a way of his name
09:43And be like the untimely thought of the wine
09:49And let him not see the sun
09:53For we will have lost me with us with thanks
09:59So as you can imagine, thank you
10:03We will have lost me when I shall come
10:06And let him cry
10:10Lord, I just shall rejoice when he's here in the mountains
10:16We shall watch his footsteps in the ground
10:24God, I just shall withhold
10:27Where Lord, I just shall not see
10:30talks and where the fireولton
10:31Jesus in the mountains As saved
10:34by a song For we
10:34your sight Lord,
10:45given up the valley to the river From the
10:47island of the area And let
10:48him BY And let him fly trying to什麼
10:51And let him
10:51And so the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever standing, while and ever standing.
11:07Amen.
11:22A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter 6.
11:27Jesus looked up at his disciples and said,
11:31Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God belongs to you.
11:35Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.
11:40Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
11:44Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you,
11:49and reject you as evil on account of the Son of Man.
11:54Rejoice in that day, and jump with joy, because your reward is great in heaven.
11:59For their ancestors did the same thing to the prophets.
12:04But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort already.
12:09Woe to you who are well satisfied with food now, for you will be hungry.
12:14Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
12:18Woe to you when all people speak well of you,
12:21for their ancestors did the same things to the false prophets.
12:27But I say to you who listen,
12:30love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
12:33bless those who curse you,
12:35pray for those who mistreat you,
12:38for the person who strikes you on the cheek,
12:40or for the other as well,
12:42and from the person who takes away your coat,
12:44do not withhold your tunic either.
12:48Give to everyone who asks you,
12:50and do not ask of your possessions back,
12:52from the person who takes them away.
12:56Treat others in the same way that you would want them to treat you.
13:01If you love those who love you,
13:04what credit is that to you?
13:06For even sinners love those who love them.
13:09If you do good to those who do good to you,
13:12what credit is that to you?
13:14Even sinners do the same.
13:17If you lend to those from whom you hope to be repaid,
13:20what credit is that to you?
13:22Even sinners lend to sinners,
13:25that they may be repaid in full.
13:29Love your enemies and do good and lend,
13:31expecting nothing back.
13:33Then your reward will be great,
13:35and you will be sons of the Most High,
13:38because he is kind to ungrateful and evil people.
13:43Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.
13:48Do not judge, and you will not be judged.
13:50Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.
13:53Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
13:55Give, and it will be given to you.
13:58A good measure pressed down,
14:00shaken together and running over,
14:02will be poured into your luck.
14:04For the measure you use will be the measure you receive.
14:08Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.
14:17Jesus told them a parable.
14:19Someone who is blind cannot need another who is blind, can he?
14:24Would they both fall into a pit?
14:26A disciple is not greater than his teacher,
14:29but everyone when fully trained will be like his teacher.
14:33Why do you seek the speck in your brother's eye,
14:36but fail to see the beam of wood in your own?
14:39How can you say to your brother,
14:41Brother, let me remove the speck from your eye,
14:44when you first did not you see the beam in your own?
14:48You hypocrite!
14:50First remove the beam from your own eye,
14:52and then you can clearly see,
14:55to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
15:00There is no good tree that produces rotten fruit,
15:03nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit.
15:06For each tree is known by its fruit.
15:09For people don't gather figs from thorns,
15:12nor do they gather grapes from the brummel.
15:15The good man out of the good treasure of his heart
15:18brings out that which is good,
15:20and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart
15:23brings out that which is evil.
15:26Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do the things I say?
15:36Everyone who comes to me and hears my word and does them,
15:40I will show you what he is like.
15:43He is like a man building a house,
15:45who jargoned, went deep, and laid the foundation on the rock.
15:49When a flood arose,
15:50the stream broke against that house,
15:53and could not shake it,
15:54because it was built upon the rock.
15:57But he who hears and does not do,
16:00is like a man who built a house on the earth without foundation.
16:05When the stream broke,
16:07immediately it fell,
16:08and the ruin of that house was great.
16:12This is the word of the Lord.
16:15Thanks be to God.
16:23These words of Jesus contain both warnings and promises.
16:28There is an implied warning to those who find themselves comfortable in this life.
16:32Those of us who have an abundance of money,
16:35a good job, status in society,
16:38a nice home,
16:39a house by the sea for the summer, perhaps.
16:43Jesus tells us that these people already have their reward.
16:47They've had their reward in this world,
16:49and there is nothing for them in the next.
16:52But why should this be?
16:55In Matthew 19.23,
16:57Jesus told his disciples it would be hard for a rich man
17:00to enter the kingdom of God.
17:03Hard, but not impossible,
17:05verse 26,
17:06with God's grace.
17:08The fundamental problem with being rich
17:12is that you are unlikely to set God
17:14at the centre of your life.
17:16In the previous verse,
17:18Matthew 19.22,
17:20we read that the young man who wanted to follow Jesus
17:22went away sad because he was rich.
17:25And Jesus had told him
17:26to go and give all his wealth
17:28away to the poor.
17:31He was torn
17:32between his money and Jesus.
17:34And so it can be for the majority of people,
17:39for they are sure in their own abilities,
17:42and they put their trust in their bank accounts.
17:46We are told
17:47that those who are sad
17:49will be laughing in heaven.
17:51Does this mean it is wrong
17:52for a Christian to be happy in this world?
17:57Absolutely not.
17:58For we should be happy
17:59in Christ's love for us.
18:01But we should not be happy
18:03with the things of this world.
18:07But in the joy
18:08that Christ gives us,
18:09the love he shares with us,
18:11and the salvation he has purchased for us.
18:14No, we should not go around
18:16with long faces,
18:17telling everyone
18:18what problems we have,
18:19what sadness and trials
18:21we have to carry in our lives.
18:23But radiate the love of Christ,
18:25so that others might see him in us.
18:30Be careful
18:31if we find ourselves
18:32to be popular.
18:33We should be hated
18:34and despised
18:35because we tell the truth of Jesus
18:37and believe in him
18:38and love him
18:39as the focus of our lives.
18:42But just
18:43as the prophets of old
18:44were isolated
18:45and friendless,
18:46so too
18:47can we expect to be.
18:50Again,
18:51this does not mean
18:52we will have no friends at all,
18:53but that we should not try
18:55to court popularity
18:57like false prophets,
18:58telling the people
18:59what they wanted to hear.
19:03I have often been heard
19:04to say to people
19:05in the past,
19:07Jesus never promised us
19:08an easy or a comfortable book.
19:10But he did promise us
19:12what we need
19:13and also,
19:14most important of all,
19:16the final victory
19:17over all.
19:21Jesus calls on us
19:22to be different.
19:24If we love each other,
19:25he says,
19:26we are no different
19:26from sinners
19:27who also love each other.
19:30Do something different.
19:32Love your enemy.
19:35But this can be really hard
19:37and is often mistaken
19:38by Christians
19:39as meaning
19:40that we should be a doormat
19:42whereby people
19:43allow others
19:44to walk all over them.
19:47This is not really
19:48what Jesus had in mind,
19:50but Jesus does not
19:51call upon us
19:51to give up
19:52on our self-respect.
19:53Far from it.
19:55Because a Christian
19:56has a lot of self-respect.
19:58Because we know
19:58we are made in God's image
20:00and that God loves us
20:01and stands with us.
20:05What Jesus wants
20:06is that we forgive
20:07those who have hurt
20:08or persecuted us.
20:10He wants us
20:11to perform
20:11charitable deeds
20:12for them,
20:13to heap coals
20:14upon their heads
20:15as it were,
20:16to go out of our way
20:17to single lament
20:18for special treatment.
20:19For in this way
20:21we can reach out
20:21and touch their lives.
20:27As a Christian
20:28should we even
20:30have enemies?
20:33That depends
20:34on the definition
20:35but most certainly
20:36we should not
20:37look down on anyone
20:38or consider them
20:40our enemy.
20:41They may of course
20:42consider us
20:43their enemy
20:44but that does not
20:46permit them
20:47us
20:47to treat them
20:48in the same way.
20:51For to a Christian
20:52all mankind
20:53are our friends
20:53and brothers
20:54and sisters.
20:55We should aim
20:56to treat all
20:57like that
20:58without exception.
21:01Think of Paul
21:02who for a very long time
21:04persecuted
21:05the early church.
21:08Jesus reached out
21:09to him
21:09and look at
21:10what happened next.
21:13Do not repay
21:14vindictiveness
21:15with vindictiveness
21:16spite with spite
21:17theft with theft.
21:19but with the help
21:21love and giving.
21:25Jesus has given us
21:26some very direct
21:27instructions
21:28on how we should
21:29live our lives.
21:31For some of us
21:32this is hard to take
21:33by doing good
21:34to those who help us.
21:38However
21:38unless we are prepared
21:39to put in more
21:40than we take out
21:41how can we ever
21:42make the world
21:42a better place?
21:44If we are part
21:45of a community
21:46that gives
21:47only so that
21:48can receive
21:49back
21:50how can that
21:50community
21:51ever hope to grow?
21:54If we learn
21:55to give freely
21:56then not only
21:56will we have
21:57a richer life
21:57but we will
21:59receive freely
21:59as well.
22:03Jesus tells us
22:04we should be
22:05merciful
22:05as God himself
22:07is merciful.
22:08But what does
22:09that mean?
22:12let us consider
22:13for a moment
22:14God's mercy
22:15and then we can
22:16translate that
22:16into a model
22:17for us.
22:19First of all
22:20God shows us
22:21all his mercy.
22:22It is available
22:23to those who
22:24love him
22:24and those who do not
22:25to righteous
22:26and to sinner
22:27alike
22:28because after all
22:29he sent his son
22:31into the world
22:32that he might
22:33be saved
22:34and find
22:35reconciliation
22:35with him.
22:37He did this
22:38before we
22:39turned to him
22:40in love and
22:40obedience
22:41not afterwards.
22:43If we loved him
22:44in obedience
22:45before the
22:46passion of Christ
22:46his sacrifice
22:48would have been
22:48unnecessary.
22:50No
22:50God loves us
22:52saints
22:53and
22:54especially
22:55sinners.
22:58Secondly
22:59think about
22:59what his mercy
23:00meant in
23:00practical terms.
23:03This is probably
23:04best summed up
23:05in John 3.16
23:06For this is the way
23:07God loved the world
23:08he gave his
23:10one and only
23:11son
23:11so that everyone
23:12who believed
23:13in him
23:14would not perish
23:15but have eternal life.
23:18Not only is this
23:20the most wonderful
23:21passage in the
23:21entire Bible
23:22it contains
23:23the greatest
23:24secret of all
23:25the perfection
23:26of God's love
23:27for us
23:28whilst we were
23:29still in a state
23:30of sin.
23:31This is the
23:32extent of his
23:33mercy.
23:34There is nothing
23:36that he is not
23:36prepared to do
23:37to secure
23:39our reconciliation
23:40to him.
23:42We matter
23:43to him
23:43so much
23:44that he
23:45caused his
23:45own beloved
23:46son
23:47to suffer
23:48and die
23:48for us.
23:53Surely
23:54we can never
23:55be as merciful
23:56as our father
23:56because we will
23:57never attain
23:58that perfection
23:59of love
23:59that he has
24:00for us
24:01but was a model
24:02for us
24:02to base
24:03our lives
24:03upon him.
24:05The passage
24:06continues
24:07by showing us
24:08in practical
24:08terms
24:09how we can
24:10live according
24:10to this model
24:11and how God
24:12will consider
24:13how we live.
24:16do not
24:17judge
24:17others.
24:19This is
24:20very hard
24:21because it is
24:22our nature
24:23to form opinions
24:24of other people
24:24both good
24:25than bad
24:26but more often
24:27we focus on
24:28what we consider
24:29to be wrong
24:29in others.
24:31Are we so perfect
24:32that we can
24:33sit in God's
24:34place?
24:35Do we truly
24:36know all the
24:37relevant facts
24:37and can read
24:38what is in
24:39other people's
24:39hearts?
24:42No,
24:43of course
24:43we cannot
24:44and so we
24:45should refrain
24:46from judgment
24:46because as we
24:47judge others
24:48God will
24:49judge us.
24:52Do we want
24:53God jumping
24:53to conclusions
24:54about us
24:55as we jump
24:56to conclusions
24:56about others?
25:00Remember
25:00the warning
25:01that Jesus
25:01gave in
25:02John 8
25:027
25:03when the
25:04woman
25:04causing
25:05the act
25:05of adultery
25:05was brought
25:06to him.
25:09Whoever
25:09amongst you
25:10is guiltless
25:11may be the
25:11first to
25:12throw a stone
25:12at her.
25:14What gives
25:15us the right
25:16to sit in
25:16judgment
25:16over others?
25:20Give
25:21and it
25:21will be
25:22given to you.
25:26If we
25:27are asked
25:27for something
25:28we should
25:28give willingly
25:29not only
25:30in the
25:30quantity
25:30requested
25:31but with
25:32generosity.
25:33Do not
25:34grumble
25:34but smile
25:35and ask
25:36if there
25:36is something
25:36else we
25:37can do
25:37or give
25:38at the
25:38same
25:38time.
25:40Now
25:41that is
25:41truly
25:41a tricky
25:42one
25:42for us
25:44but
25:44I am
25:45quite sure
25:47that we
25:47will manage.
25:49Let us
25:50make a
25:50start.
25:52If your
25:53neighbour
25:53asks you
25:54for a
25:54cup of
25:54flour
25:56give them
25:56a packet.
25:58If they
25:59ask for
25:59help moving
26:00something in
26:01the house
26:01why not
26:02offer
26:03while I am
26:04here
26:04is there
26:05anything else
26:05I can
26:06give you
26:06a hand
26:06with?
26:09Jesus
26:10asked if
26:10a blind
26:11man could
26:11guide another
26:12blind man
26:12without them
26:13both falling
26:14into a
26:14ditch.
26:16The answer
26:17of course
26:17was that
26:18this would
26:18be exactly
26:19what would
26:20happen.
26:23It is
26:24important for
26:24Christians
26:24not to
26:25judge others.
26:26If only
26:26for the
26:27simple reason
26:27that we
26:28are to
26:28judge
26:29non-believers
26:30it is
26:31inevitable
26:31that we
26:32will end
26:32up looking
26:32down upon
26:33them for
26:33their
26:34non-belief
26:34at the
26:35very least.
26:37If we
26:37do not
26:38look at
26:38people as
26:39equals in
26:39love then
26:40how are we
26:40ever going to
26:41reach out to
26:42them and
26:42share the
26:43love of
26:43Jesus with
26:44them?
26:46If we
26:47cannot
26:47consider
26:48non-believers
26:48as our
26:49equals why
26:50is it that
26:50we often hear
26:51people saying
26:52that we
26:53are better
26:53than they
26:54ever could
26:54be.
26:56For them
26:57this then
26:58becomes an
26:59insurmountable
27:00barrier to
27:01their believing.
27:05For us
27:05it is far
27:06better that
27:07we look to
27:07ourselves and
27:08sort out our
27:08own difficulties
27:09our problems
27:11of faith
27:11our sin
27:12our Christian
27:13family and
27:14our relationship
27:14with Christ.
27:16Then we can
27:17sit with our
27:17neighbour and
27:18they will feel
27:19the love and
27:20warmth that we
27:20have formed.
27:22After that
27:23it will be
27:24much easier
27:25for them to
27:25accept what
27:26we are saying
27:27about our
27:28faith and
27:29when we
27:29share with
27:30them.
27:32If they
27:33see us
27:33happy,
27:35relaxed and
27:36confident in
27:36Christ's love
27:37then they
27:38will wonder
27:39what it is
27:39that we have
27:40that they
27:40did not
27:41have at
27:42once and
27:42for themselves.
27:46We are
27:47all sinful
27:48let us
27:48remember that.
27:50Maybe some
27:50of us are
27:51more sinful
27:52than others
27:52but that
27:53does not
27:54make one
27:54of us
27:54better or
27:55worse than
27:55the other.
27:57At the end
27:57of the day
27:58sin is sin
27:59regardless of
27:59degree and
28:01as we read
28:01so often in
28:02the Bible
28:03what starts
28:04out as a
28:04small sin
28:05can very
28:06quickly become
28:06a big sin.
28:09Even the
28:09tiniest of
28:10sins pollutes
28:11our relationship
28:12with God.
28:15Judgment
28:15is for the
28:16one who is
28:17perfect without
28:18sin or in
28:21the judgment
28:21of others
28:22we fall
28:23into a
28:23deeper sin.
28:25Surely
28:25this was the
28:26ditch that
28:26Jesus was
28:27referring to.
28:33let us
28:34pray.
28:35O God
28:36for as much
28:38as without
28:38you we are
28:39not able to
28:40please you
28:42mercifully grant
28:43that your
28:44Holy Spirit
28:44may in all
28:46things direct
28:47and rule
28:48our hearts
28:49through Jesus
28:50Christ our
28:51Lord.
28:52Amen.
28:58May the
28:58Lord bless
28:59us and
29:00keep us
29:00from all
29:01evil
29:01bringing us
29:03to everlasting
29:04life.
29:05Amen.
