00:00and we go out to the wise heart right we make it right call Kyle Wright hotline Greg Rosenthal
00:04NFL daily podcast joining us here on the fan Greg how you doing tonight what's going on ready for
00:10this game we're ready for this one too and it obviously comes with just a bunch of questions
00:14attached to it we played a clip from you earlier in the week and it was you discussing what you
00:20think of Deshaun Watson currently if you could spell that out for people and maybe elaborate
00:24on your thoughts on what the the current Browns quarterback has looked like
00:29much more explosive in his movements and his ability to make plays out of structure and
00:35certainly with his legs just as a runner than I ever expected him to be again I think that's been
00:39the key is a couple of those plays in terms of his accuracy and seeing the field and making plays
00:46on
00:46time it's it's still not happening a lot but I do give Todd Monken credit for getting the ball out
00:53of
00:53his hands and getting some structured plays or guys and it's a good group of young guys can make
00:58plays for Watson so I think they've taken a nice first step they're gonna need more but it's more
01:03than I expected a few games in with that said I don't I think Browns fans largely see what you
01:08see
01:09like they they understand they're not they're not under some illusion here that the quarterback play
01:13hasn't been great but it's been enough to win these last two weeks what would a win tonight over the
01:19Pittsburgh Steelers do to almost validate what we've seen from Deshaun to this point even for
01:24the Browns like validate the start of the season that they're having it it's so big for a team like
01:30the Browns who's lost so much lately I mean this this feels like a game that's going to change your
01:36season because this is easily the best defense I think that that they faced I know the Jaguars are
01:40a good defense too but if the Steelers make Watson look like he did in week one we're we're right
01:46back
01:46to all the same discussions when do we see Shader how can you stick with this guy that that is
01:51in
01:51the realm of possibilities but if he goes out there and plays like Aaron Rodgers say did last week
01:57uh you know and really improves like starts taking that step forward I think the Browns will be totally
02:03validated for for what they've done this offseason which a lot of people including myself thought was
02:07a dumb idea which was going to this season with him as your starter and so even if he just
02:12plays well
02:13and they they lose a close game I think that's important for for where they're going because
02:17it's obvious that the build on some levels is working you have good young talent on this offense
02:23around Deshaun Watson yeah and one of the things we've kind of been stressed to by the Browns and
02:27by people around the Browns is that uh that what they really care about the most Greg is that you're
02:32giving the young guys a chance you know and the young guys being Fannin and Boston and Concepcion and
02:37and Judkins and through three games even though it keeps missing Concepcion who's open for some
02:42reason uh he's giving the young guys a chance and I think that's what matters the most
02:47I think that's right that wasn't true you know week one entirely I but you're right that for the most
02:53part on the quick hitting plays and he does get rid of the ball pretty quickly you know when that
02:58first read is open he he's getting the ball out the operation again outside of week one has been
03:03pretty good and that makes sense you you do want to see him start getting to a second third read
03:09but
03:10look if if he's mostly just a a guy who can still run the ball fairly well can make some
03:16improv plays
03:17and can hit some quick hitting throws that are schemed up for him in this Todd Monk in offense
03:21like that again is probably better than we expected going into the year Greg you mentioned Deshaun as a
03:27runner he's been really the only player that could really has been able to do much in the run game
03:31at this point he's I believe leading the team in rushing just based on how he's played these first
03:35three weeks and what have you noticed about the struggles the Browns have had the run game and
03:40how can they try to get that going tonight yeah I've been surprised by that I think Judkins isn't
03:47a hundred percent back but it's definitely the blocking scheme the run game I think you know
03:53there's changes there obviously in terms of the personnel but also in terms of the scheme and on the
03:59right side you know you have Titus Howard who has not really looked great and then at center you're
04:04dealing with an injury tonight with Jenkins and so that is a concern you're seeing a lot of
04:09defenders in the backfield and Judkins unlike last year I don't think right now has the juice to make
04:15as many people miss as he did early last year I saw the Browns in person overseas last year and
04:20I mean
04:20he I am convinced that that kid is going to be a special running back but right now it seems
04:24like
04:24he's not fully recovered from that injury Greg Rosenthal NFL Daily podcast joining us here on the fan
04:29NFL Daily streams Monday through Friday six o'clock Eastern time on the NFL channel available
04:33across all major fast platforms I did want to ask you about Todd Munkin and what the perception
04:38across the NFL is I know how we feel here in Cleveland we've really and through three games
04:43again it's very early and this can change really quickly but he's just a straight shooter and he's
04:47very refreshing compared to Stefanski in a lot of ways what is the perception of the job that Munkin is
04:52doing oh he's a character a lot of respect for him as an offensive mind he's done it in so
04:59many
05:00different ways different types of quarterbacks college pro there's always been respect that he
05:07can scheme an offense and you wondered when he became a head coach would he still be the same
05:13irascible like guy who just says whatever he wants and he absolutely has been I think for Cleveland
05:18there's a couple ways that you guys could have an effective head coach this is one of them that I
05:22don't think he's going to get affected by the outside noise he he is who he is it might lead
05:27to some
05:27crazy headlines if things go south a little bit but I don't think he's going to change as far as
05:32this
05:32matchup gets concerned tonight who is Aaron Rodgers at this stage of his career he's a guy who does not
05:39want to get hit but I got to say last week's game was the best I think he's looked since
05:45he had a
05:46Packers uniform on I really mean it because he never was that guy with the Jets and the first couple
05:52games with the Steelers this season and last season I just thought it was like him wanting to get rid
05:56of
05:57the ball quickly not wanting to take a hit his average depth of target his explosive plays by far it
06:02was the most last week that he's had they are making him throw to the middle of the field like
06:07doing
06:07the things not every single down that you want to see kind of out of a modern offense play action
06:12passing in the past really with the Jets and the Steelers he was kind of doing what he wants just
06:16back there in shotgun spread formation I pick the match if I like I throw it like that just doesn't
06:20work and I thought last week was really encouraging it was one week but I it's one of the reasons
06:26I'm
06:26really curious in this game because the Browns are coming off a great defensive performance these are
06:30two teams that both could be better than people think and why on paper it didn't look great maybe
06:36going into the season as a TNF game and I think it's a really fun one tonight yeah I mean
06:40I'm
06:40fascinated by Jalen Warren tonight 176 yards from scrimmage last week are we going to expect
06:45McCarthy to just keep dialing that back up or is he going to put it more into Roger's hands and
06:50make
06:51him do the work they should rely on their running game they have a big offensive line they made two
06:56changes on the right side of their offensive line last week that really worked for them Maxi
07:00Hanachor is their first round pick he's that right tackle and then Brock Hoffman the guy who I believe
07:05he was on the Cowboys before made his first start for them last week so they benched two starters
07:09and both of them look great especially in the running game and Faltano is the first round pickup
07:13left tackle and he was effective laughing I've always thought Jalen Warren is a great player he's
07:19never had a big workload so last week was by far the biggest workload of his entire career and he
07:24looked like he was a game and now he's on a short week he's on the road I know it's
07:29a short road trip but
07:30I do wonder if that workload is going to affect him tonight we've talked so much about the the
07:34Browns rookies and and how a successful season this year kind of looks like those guys coming
07:40along as the season progresses just what has stood out to you about you know I mean maybe it's like
07:45three main guys because I think Emmanuel McNeil Warren hasn't played a ton yet but um the three guys on
07:51the offense in particular Spencer Fano, Denzo, Boston, Casey, Concepcion and what are the ceilings for
07:55those guys? Just that you take two receivers that early in the draft and they look exactly like you
08:03want them to look early I think Concepcion is a dynamic player I had him as my number two wide
08:08receiver in the draft and Boston already looks like uh he's better than him and yet I think they both
08:13are exactly who you thought they would be Concepcion's speed and ability to change direction really stands
08:18out and Boston is a ball winner and you need those and you know I'd expand that rookie class
08:23from everything I hear and and what I've seen and certainly the coaching staff trust that Austin
08:28Barber has been a great find for them so you could have two rookie offensive linemen that that are going
08:33to be playing a while for this team and you're right that is what this season is all about for
08:37them
08:37and so far to me it's off to a very good start. Greg Rosenthal, NFL Daily Podcast here on 92
08:43.3 The Fan.
08:43Is Mason Graham for real? I think so he he is proving some people like myself I will admit wrong
08:52that you know wasn't sure about his down-to-down consistency in college like you would be able
08:57to run at him but there is something about him that reminds reminds me a little bit of TJ Watt
09:02on
09:02the other side which is that like he just makes plays it's almost uncanny how he's around the ball he
09:09he has a great sense for it and he has shown that he has more than enough strength to go
09:14along
09:14with the quickness that he has on the interior so I think his best two three games of his career
09:20are
09:20the last three that's what you want to see going into your second year that he's taking a big step
09:24forward and you know we have one of my my co-workers Daniel Jeremiah talking about saying he's playing
09:29at a defensive player of the year level I don't know if I'm ready to go that far yet but
09:32he's playing
09:32at a pro bowl level that that is no question he's been an awesome player early this season.
09:36We had talked so much in the preseason about this defense taking a step back without Myles
09:41Garrett and and I think certainly it's different but um what has maybe stood out to you about the
09:47way that they've been able to maybe combat him not being there already through these first three games?
09:53Well you know week one I'm willing to throw away it's a it's a tough matchup this is a a
10:00defense last
10:01year that was so effective kind of in doing what they do you kind of knew what Jim Schwartz was
10:06got to be it wasn't going to be too complicated they they tackled they they hit you they didn't
10:11allow big plays they let their players kind of play fast and this is more of a typical off defense
10:17I
10:17think you see around the league where you know you see post snap adjustments you see a few more
10:22wrinkles a few more blitzes certainly and I think it's taken them a few games to get ready but they
10:27look better in that home opener than they did before that they're coming off a game where they had
10:31about as much pressure as any defense has had all year so that's the vision that you have four or
10:35five different pass rushers that can affect the quarterback and that's huge tonight I really
10:39am going to be watching that battle because I still do not trust Aaron Rodgers if you can get
10:44pressure on him uh Greg after tonight's game I mean that'll be four weeks in and Dylan Gabriel is
10:48expected to come off the IR uh at least we would imagine and so you'd have Dylan Gabriel Shador Sanders
10:53Taylin Green and Deshaun Watson that's that's like probably one too many quarterbacks if you're the
10:58Browns would you trade one of these quarterbacks or how would you go about doing this
11:04I just can't imagine there's a market for Dylan Gabriel I don't know how they feel about him
11:10long term as a backup whether they'd prefer him over Shador or not so sure yeah if someone wants
11:16to give you a let's say a fourth round pick for one of those two guys I think about it
11:21but I still
11:21want to see Shador I think he has a little more ceiling than Dylan Gabriel has at some point I'd
11:27like
11:27to see how he plays he could be your long-term backup or 1b type of option depending on who
11:32you
11:32get if you draft someone this year so I don't think you're getting much for him I just hold on
11:37to four
11:37of them I don't think it's that crazy quarterbacks are so valuable you like Taylor Green why not I
11:42it's it's fine if you're talking about him over like your six special team safety I think that's okay
11:47at least in the interim even amidst how Deshaun Watson's been playing what do you what will this
11:54Browns quarterback room look like next season in terms of guys that are here now and maybe
11:59somebody they're looking to add I do expect the presumptive starter for the 27 Browns is not on
12:08this roster still I think Watson's gonna have to improve a great deal it's possible but I just have
12:15not seen him play at a consistently high level in so long I need to see it before I really
12:21believe
12:21it I think should her has a chance to be like a fun type of quarterback that's in the league
12:27a long
12:27time that ends up starting a decent amount of game is never maybe the guy capital you know th easy
12:34guy
12:34but like a guy that will be in the NFL for a while so to me he makes sense to
12:38be around and you just see
12:40what you can get within the draft next year or what's available in trades it usually a quarterback or
12:47two shakes loose but the Browns might win too many games to be at the top of this draft and
12:50and teams like the Jets who have three first round draft picks will we'll try to try to beat them
12:55to
12:55it Chargers Texans Dolphins and Buccaneers all winless which Owen three team is actually screwed
13:03oh man well I mean outside of the Dolphins let's just take the Dolphins out yeah we we know they're
13:08going to the number one overall pick likely out of the three good teams that we're talking about
13:12yeah they literally have the least amount of cap space used on their players in the history
13:17of the NFL I think the Chargers are the ones that are in the most trouble of the teams that
13:22were
13:22expected to be good they they like at some point you got to believe what you see I really think
13:27they've been the second worst team in the NFL they haven't really been competitive I know they were
13:31in that game last weekend to build it's because they got five turnovers uh they cannot move the
13:35ball Justin Herbert looks lost the running game looks lost and and the reason why I put them as more
13:40lost even than the Bucs who I kind of put at the exact same level is they're not in the
13:44NFC South
13:44they have the hardest schedule in the NFL over the next six seven weeks if they win two of those
13:51games
13:51they will be two and eight whatever the record is going to be like I just don't see a world
13:56where
13:56they are contending in mid-November yeah I think we all know why Justin Herbert's a little lost right
14:01now say anything but Madison Beer and you got my attention
14:07it's Madison Beer all right
14:11what's that
14:14Mike McDaniel's a little lost out here too I was there at their training camp and they thought it
14:18was gonna be like the most fun season ever I think they are honestly stunned at what's happening right
14:23now they gotta be I mean we we spent so much of the offseason and talking about head coaches
14:27for the Browns and and he just kept coming up over and over and over again and then it was
14:31like no
14:32he's gonna take the safer route Browns are too risky he's gonna do the safer route and be a you
14:36know a Harbaugh's OC and now you look up and it just seems like nothing is going right
14:42yeah the running game is a big problem which is you can only be good for so long if you
14:48have one of
14:48the league's worst running which is another thing again bring it back to the Browns like I am watching
14:53very closely tonight because what they can't have is having Deshaun Watson have to carry the
14:59offense which frankly he's kind of had to so far I mean they haven't been great but like they need
15:04some help from the run game no question Greg you're fantastic as always we obviously always pay
15:08attention to you guys with the NFL daily podcast streaming Monday through Friday at six o'clock
