00:23Let us pray.
00:25Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ, Son of the Living God, God Most High,
00:32who has created me and formed my soul after your own divine image and likeness,
00:39and has made me capable of everlasting happiness.
00:43Grant that I may serve you, my Lord, my God and my Father, with a faithful heart,
00:49that I may fight against my sins with a holy hatred,
00:54and that all sinful passion and affection being destroyed within me,
00:58I may be renewed in perfect innocence of life.
01:04Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:07who has given me for my use the heaven, the earth, the sea and all the things that are in
01:12them,
01:13and has granted them for my service and comfort.
01:19Permit I beseech you, O Lord, that I may never abuse your creatures,
01:24but that all the works of your hands may tell of your goodness,
01:28and may lead me to admire, to know, and to love you.
01:33Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:37who, out of your affection for me,
01:40granted me to be born in the true Christian faith,
01:43and has mercifully brought me up from the beginning of my life,
01:48supplying me with food and the other necessaries
01:50for the nourishment and support of my body.
01:54May my heart find no relish except in and through you.
01:59May you alone possess my innermost soul.
02:03May I exceedingly hunger for you,
02:06the bread of heaven,
02:07and thirst for you, the fountain of life,
02:10so that this life's exile ended,
02:13and I may deserve to be satisfied with the joys of your eternal perfection.
02:19Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
02:22who, up until this time,
02:25has preserved and delivered me from countless dangers of soul and body,
02:29even when I abused your gifts,
02:32not deserting me.
02:35Illuminate my heart, I beseech you,
02:38with the brightness of your grace,
02:41the truly perceiving your goodness to me,
02:43and my own ingratitude toward you.
02:47I may bemoan myself,
02:50I may be hateful in my own sight,
02:53but I may please you,
02:55my creator and my only redeemer,
02:58in all things.
03:01Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:04who, when I lie immersed in the most loathsome vices,
03:09and was leading a most ungodly life,
03:11in your long-suffering,
03:13bore with me for such a long time,
03:15and brought me to repentance.
03:18Grant that my acceptable contrition and holy works,
03:22I may expiate the stains of my past sin,
03:26and that from now on I may lead a life of purity,
03:30and love you above all things,
03:32with most burning love.
03:36Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:39who, when I was on the brink of the very precipice,
03:42and just within the jaws of hell,
03:45did not permit me to perish,
03:47but called me, though deaf,
03:49and trying to run from you to the way of salvation.
03:54Grant that from now on I may follow after you with humble devotion,
03:59and with a joyful heart,
04:01correspond to your holy inspirations,
04:04with from my heart farewell to all things,
04:09and may cleave inseparably to you alone.
04:15Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:18who always directed me, the vilest of sinners,
04:21has protected me,
04:23has looked upon me with the eyes of mercy,
04:25and still so fondly supports and cherishes me with your goodness.
04:30Despite my daily transgressions,
04:33as if forgetful of all others,
04:36you cared for me alone.
04:38Grant that I also may love you most ardently,
04:43leaving all transitory things for your sake,
04:46and may think of you alone,
04:48and may with a ready mind and in all places,
04:51follow and perform your holy will.
04:55Amen.
04:59O Lord, open our lips,
05:02and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:12O be joyful in the Lord,
05:16O be blessed,
05:18serve the Lord with gladness,
05:22and come in light,
05:25present,
05:26with a song,
05:28O be sure that the Lord,
05:32he is God,
05:35is he that can pray,
05:37that must be ourselves.
05:40We are his people,
05:43and the team of his master.
05:48O do we obey,
05:50to his days we have seen,
05:53and to his master,

10:13Let the words of my mouth
10:15and the meditation of my heart
10:19be only acceptable in thy sight.
10:25O Lord, my strength, and my healing.
10:35O Lord, my strength, and my healing.
11:12A reading from the Gospel according to Saint John, chapter 13.
11:19Now before the Feast of the Passover,
11:21it was clear to Jesus that the time had come for him
11:24to go away from this world to the Father.
11:29Having once had love for those in the world who were his,
11:33his love for them went on to the end.
11:36So while the meal was going on,
11:39the evil one, having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot,
11:43Simon's son, to be false to him,
11:46Jesus, being conscious that the Father had put everything into his hands,
11:51and that here he came from God and was going to God,
11:55got up from the table, put off his robe,
11:57and took a cloth and put it around him.
12:00Then he put water into a basin
12:02and washed the feet of his disciples,
12:06drying them with the cloth which was around him.
12:11When he came to Simon Peter, Peter said,
12:14Lord, are my feet to be washed by you?
12:18Jesus answering, said to him,
12:21What I do is not clear to you now,
12:23but it will be clear to you in time to come.
12:27Peter said,
12:29I will never let my feet be washed by you, never.
12:34Jesus said in reply,
12:36If I do not make you clean,
12:38you have no part with me.
12:41Simon Peter said to him,
12:43Lord, then not my feet only,
12:45but my hands and my head.
12:48Jesus said,
12:49He who has bathed has no need to have,
12:52need only to have his feet washed,
12:55and he is clean all over.
12:57You, my disciples, are clean,
13:00but not all of you.
13:02For he had knowledge of who was false to him.
13:05Which is why he said,
13:07You are not all clean.
13:11Then after washing their feet
13:13and putting on his robe again,
13:15he took his seat and said to them,
13:17Do you see what I have done for you?
13:20You give me the name of Master and Lord
13:22and you are right,
13:23for that is what I am.
13:25If then I, the Lord and Master,
13:27have made your feet clean,
13:29it is right for you
13:30to make one another's feet clean.
13:33I have given you an example,
13:35so that you may do what I have done to you.
13:39Truly I say to you,
13:40a servant is not greater than his Lord,
13:43and he who is sent
13:45is not greater than the one who sent him.
13:48If these things are clear to you,
13:50happy are you if you do them.
13:54I am not talking of all of you.
13:58I have knowledge of my true disciples,
14:00but things are as they are,
14:02so that the writings may come true.
14:06The foot of him who takes bread with me
14:08is lifted up against me.
14:11From this time forward,
14:12I give you knowledge of things
14:14before they come about,
14:15so that when they come about,
14:17you may have believed that I am he.
14:22Truly I say to you,
14:23he who takes to his heart
14:25anyone whom I send
14:26takes me to his heart,
14:29and he who so takes me
14:31takes him who sends me.
14:35When Jesus had said this,
14:37he was troubled in spirit
14:38and gave witness, saying,
14:40Truly I say to you,
14:42that one of you will be false to me.
14:46Then the eyes of the disciples
14:47turned one to another,
14:50in doubt as to whom he had in mind.
14:54There was at the table
14:55one of his disciples,
14:57the one dear to Jesus,
14:58resting his head on his breast.
15:01Making a sign to him,
15:03Simon Peter said,
15:04Who is it he is talking about?
15:08Then, resting his head on Jesus' breast,
15:11said to him,
15:12Lord, who is it?
15:17Jesus replied,
15:18It is the one to whom
15:19I will give this bit of bread,
15:21after I have put it in the vessel.
15:24Then he took the bit of bread,
15:26put it in the vessel,
15:27and gave it to Judas,
15:28the son of Simon Iscariot.
15:32When Judas took the bread,
15:34Satan went into him.
15:37Jesus said to him,
15:38Go, do quickly what you have to do.
15:42Now it was not clear to anyone at the table,
15:45why he had said this to him.
15:48Some were of the opinion,
15:49that because Judas kept the money bag,
15:51Jesus said to him,
15:53Go buy the things we have need of for the feast,
15:56or that he was to give something to the poor.
16:01Judas,
16:02having taken the bread,
16:03straight away went out,
16:04and it was night.
16:08Then, when he had gone out,
16:10Jesus said,
16:11Now is glory given to the Son of Man,
16:14and God is given glory in him.
16:17If God is given glory in him,
16:18then God will give him glory in himself,
16:21and will give him glory even now.
16:24My dear children,
16:26I am only to be with you a little longer,
16:29then you will be looking for me.
16:31And as I have said to the Jews,
16:33so I say now to you,
16:36Where I am going,
16:37you may not come.
16:39I give you a new law.
16:41Have love one for another,
16:43even as I have had love for you,
16:46so are you to love each other.
16:50By this,
16:51it will be clear to all men,
16:53that you are my disciples,
16:55if you have loved one for another.
16:59This is the word of the Lord.
17:02Thanks be to God.
17:13Although Jesus had spoken in the past,
17:15to his disciples about his betrayal,
17:18this is the first time,
17:20he tells them that it will be one of them,
17:22who will perform the deed.
17:25In the midst of those,
17:26who should be united in their support,
17:28and loyalty to him,
17:29there lay a traitor,
17:31one who was not all,
17:32that he seemed to be.
17:37If we look around at society,
17:39we can see similar things today,
17:40for in any organisation,
17:42you will find the weak link,
17:45the one who is not totally committed,
17:48the one who could desert the cause,
17:50if the going became too difficult,
17:52or dangerous.
17:56In the case of Judas,
17:58and whilst we can never be sure,
17:59what his motive was,
18:01for what he was about to do,
18:04it is quite likely,
18:05that he had begun to realise,
18:07that Jesus was heading down,
18:08a path different,
18:10to the one that he had picked,
18:12for himself.
18:15We can see the same thing,
18:17in our church fellowship,
18:19that perhaps not,
18:20with the same dangerous consequences.
18:23There can be those,
18:24who attend on a regular basis,
18:26who say and do all the right things,
18:29but who lack the same conviction,
18:31shared by the others.
18:35It is generally impossible,
18:36to tell who they are,
18:38and we should not attempt,
18:40to judge.
18:41But we should accept,
18:43that there are always,
18:44going to be those,
18:45whose motivations,
18:47are perhaps a little different,
18:48to our own.
18:50Let us remember,
18:52that even amongst the disciples,
18:54it was impossible,
18:55for them to tell,
18:56though it would be.
18:58But we will come back,
18:59to this on another occasion.
19:01We read of a wonderful truth,
19:03from our Lord.
19:05If we accept those,
19:06who are sent in his name,
19:08we accept him,
19:09and if we accept him,
19:11we accept the Father.
19:14By extension,
19:15of course,
19:16the reverse is true,
19:17for if we kneel in front of Jesus,
19:20we kneel in front of God the Father,
19:22and he welcomes us,
19:23into his kingdom.
19:28Jesus knew,
19:29of course,
19:29all about what was coming,
19:31from the who,
19:32to the what,
19:33and to the when,
19:34which would have made things,
19:36doubly hard for him.
19:40First,
19:40worst of all,
19:41he was to be betrayed,
19:43by someone he had chosen,
19:44to betray him.
19:47This surely,
19:48is the most difficult situation,
19:49we could imagine,
19:50if ever there was one.
19:52And we read today,
19:54that he carried that knowledge,
19:56with a heavy heart.
19:59Sometimes,
20:00and hopefully,
20:01not too often,
20:02we may be called upon,
20:03to do things,
20:04that are going to be,
20:05very unpleasant.
20:06The sorts of things,
20:07that will probably be,
20:09hard,
20:09to try and weasel out of,
20:11if we wanted to.
20:13When we are confronted,
20:15by this,
20:15we should remember Jesus,
20:17as he prepared,
20:18to do his father's duty,
20:20and pay the ultimate,
20:23for us.
20:25We should also remember,
20:26that God is with us,
20:28walking beside,
20:29or even on occasion,
20:30carrying us,
20:32and that whatever,
20:33the upshot will be,
20:34he will be there,
20:35with us.
20:37I cannot really imagine,
20:39that we would have to face,
20:40anything like that,
20:41faced by Jesus,
20:44that first Easter.
20:48With the departure of Judas,
20:50on his treacherous mission,
20:52Jesus remained,
20:53with his true friends,
20:54and shared with them,
20:55one final,
20:56great commandment,
20:58that we should love,
21:00one another,
21:01as he loved us.
21:04How difficult this is.
21:06Even those of us,
21:07we love as dearly,
21:08as is humanly possible,
21:11can cause us,
21:12to become upset,
21:13and irritated,
21:14from time to time.
21:16A state,
21:17which is hardly Christ like,
21:19and yet this is exactly,
21:20what we are called to do.
21:23However,
21:25it is a work in progress,
21:26for us.
21:27It is a path,
21:28we have to take,
21:29rather than merely,
21:31flipping a switch.
21:34What do I mean by this?
21:36Quite simply,
21:37we can make a decision,
21:38to follow in Christ's steps,
21:40to walk,
21:41to the best of our ability,
21:43in his path,
21:44attempting in prayer,
21:45and meditation,
21:46to get closer,
21:48and closer to him.
21:50As we draw closer,
21:51we not only become,
21:52closer spiritually,
21:54but it becomes easier,
21:55for us to think,
21:56as he thinks,
21:57and to do,
21:58as he would do,
21:59in our place.
22:01This is not something,
22:02we learn,
22:03in an instant.
22:04It is a skill,
22:06acquired,
22:07over a lifetime,
22:08and we will never,
22:10quite make,
22:10that perfection,
22:12however long,
22:13and however hard,
22:14we may try.
22:16There are no perfect saints,
22:18in the world,
22:20just saintly people.
22:22Maybe we should think,
22:24about that one,
22:24for a moment.
22:27Let us remember,
22:28also,
22:29that every one of us,
22:30falls from time to time.
22:32Even Peter,
22:33slipped,
22:33when in the company,
22:34of Gentiles,
22:36Galatians 2,
22:3711,
22:38and had to be taken,
22:38to one side,
22:39by Paul.
22:41What counts,
22:42however,
22:42is not so much,
22:44what we do,
22:45but our reaction,
22:46to what we do.
22:49We are called upon,
22:50to confess our failings,
22:51to pray for guidance,
22:54and to pray for strength,
22:55so that rather,
22:56than being failings,
22:58they become points,
23:00of strength,
23:00in our future.
23:03The amazing thing here,
23:05is that the more,
23:05we recognize,
23:06and understand,
23:07our own failings,
23:08the more,
23:09we can also understand,
23:10those of our brothers,
23:12and sisters around us.
23:14Not one of us,
23:16is perfect.
23:17And as we begin,
23:18to understand our own,
23:19imperfection,
23:20so we are better able,
23:22to love and support others,
23:23so much more effectively,
23:25and compassionately.
23:45We praise you, O God,
23:49in our truth,
23:51to be our Lord,
23:53our Lord,
23:55God bless you.
24:33God bless you.
24:55God bless you.
25:25God bless you.
26:02God bless you.
26:05God bless you.
26:21God bless you.
26:22God bless you.
26:47God bless you.
26:52God bless you.
26:54God bless you.
27:12God bless you.
27:20God bless you.
27:24God bless you.
27:29God bless you.
27:47Let us pray
27:49O Lord, we beseech you
27:51Grant your people grace
27:53To withstand the temptations of the world
27:55The flesh and the devil
27:58And with pure hearts and minds
28:00Follow you, the only God
28:02Through Jesus Christ, our Lord
28:05Amen
28:11May the Lord bless us
28:13And keep us from all evil
28:15Bringing us to everlasting life
28:19Amen
