00:00Chairman of the Pinaldebe Regional Corporation, Gwautam Maharaj, says residents have every right to be frustrated,
00:08admitting that several roads and communities have been neglected for years.
00:13Definitely there are craters existing for a very long time.
00:17Yes, people are upset. I, being a resident also of this region, is also upset.
00:23So I stand on the side of the people, understanding that for 10 years nothing has been done.
00:29When you have an asset, whether it's machinery, whether it's a road, it needs attention, it needs life cycle care.
00:37If nothing has been done to a particular road, as is the case, not only that road, many roads.
00:44Maharaj tells the TV6 Morning Edition the corporation is now working with the ministry, the area's MP and other stakeholders
00:52to address the worst affected roads,
00:55adding that remedial works are already underway in several communities.
01:00We are tackling this. We are taking it.
01:03This is a shared area between the Pinaldebe Regional Corporation, a border of the Pinaldebe Regional Corporation and asset of
01:10the Ministry of Works.
01:11And definitely I can say that collaboratively we have been doing some things and we will continue to do.
01:17Of course, with this particular area, like other areas, we will be working with the residents, which we have been
01:23doing,
01:24to be able to bring some measure of temporary relief, some measure of relief that will allow them to continue
01:30to traverse the area,
01:32to be able to drop children to school and all of that.
01:35He insists the corporation is committed to improving road conditions, while he notes funding remains a challenge.
01:43So that it's tied into, from a governance perspective, from managing, it is tied into many other elements.
01:50It is tied into the major element of funds availability, of which there is no doubt.
01:56As they say, the figures tell a story, figures don't lie per se.
02:00There is no doubt that the inheriting of very, very low funds of what we call an empty treasury
02:06is a key component in terms of how deliveries are made.
