00:00Residents of Fairfield Housing Development are expressing concerns after vandals broke into the community's sewage treatment plant and stole critical
00:09electrical cables.
00:11Phase 2 resident Kevin Fraser says he responded after being alerted to suspicious activity at the facility.
00:18So when I was notified of what was happening, I personally visited the site where I met with an agency
00:27employee who indicated to me.
00:30I met him in the roadway and he was a bit traumatized, saying that, you know, there may be men
00:34on the compound.
00:36So I told him, you know, let's venture in and see what's happening.
00:42So we went in. We saw that the locks were broken. We saw that the gates were open wide.
00:48We saw a hole in the fence and then further investigation revealed that several of the cables that powers the
00:55plant were cut and removed from site.
00:58Fraser says the damage has left residents worried about the plant's ability to function properly.
01:05He says an employee of HDC warned that without the necessary repairs, the system could fail, creating a serious health
01:12risk in the community.
01:14He indicated to me that that now would affect the plant's ability to effectively manage the waste in the development.
01:25And if it's not rectified within a period of time, then it could be catastrophic where sewage could be backing
01:33up into the streets and in the worst cases into people's homes.
01:37He says this is the latest in the series of attacks on the community infrastructure.
01:43Fraser notes that TNT cables were also vandalized just a few weeks ago, resulting in a prolonged power outage.
01:51Now residents are appealing for increased security and police intervention.
01:55We have been rallying, myself along with a few other community members, have been rallying to try to get the
02:03different protective service agencies to aid us in enhancing the security in the community.
02:10As you could probably recall, sometime back, probably a few weeks ago, they just vandalized T and tech tables, which
02:18caused an outage for a considerable amount of time in the community.
02:44Residents are urging authorities to act swiftly to repair the damage and strengthen security before the situation escalates further.
