02:54Welcome to this episode of the Fro Wrestling Podcast.
02:57I am Dr. Fro.
02:58If you've got questions, comments, something you want me to touch on in the future episode,
03:02the best way to get those questions, comments, or concerns, or whatever it is, to me is through
03:06the Fro Wrestling Sound Offline.
03:09267-642-1160.
03:10I will get to those in a future episode.
03:12But tonight, we're covering two major topics.
03:15One, the cuts in NXT.
03:17Let's start there.
03:18Now, listen.
03:18Here's the thing.
03:19I understand that the process that is being brought out in the media is that WWE reevaluates
03:26their talent every 30 to 60 days, depending on what report you listen to.
03:31Some say six months.
03:33Some say 90 days every three months.
03:36Whatever it is, there's an evaluation period where they look at their talent, especially
03:40at the developmental level, and determine if they're progressing at a satisfactory rate
03:44to someday make it to television.
03:46I understand all that.
03:48I really, really do.
03:49And if you have somebody who's just not making enough gain, then I guess at some point you
03:55have to cut bait, move on, and whatnot.
03:57I need to be clear, though.
03:59It has been said in various media outlets that these cuts are not an indication that a
04:04talent does not show promise, doesn't have serious potential.
04:08They're just not progressing as fast as WWE would like them to be.
04:13And right now, when you look at all the talent that is assigned to a WWE contract, be that
04:18a regular contract, a main roster, an NXT contract, or the NIL deals, or anything like
04:23that, there are so many talents under contract.
04:26And the goal is to always produce top-level, television-ready talents.
04:31So some of these people have been in the system for a while.
04:34Some of them not as long.
04:35But the reality is, some of them don't surprise me.
04:37Some, I'll be honest, are really shocking to me.
04:41So let's run through it.
04:42First off, some that, let's be honest, really never got a footing in WWE.
04:47Marcus Brown, Braxton Cole, Ellen Aikison.
04:51Those people didn't really have a prominent role on any form of WWE television.
04:57Spot appearances for some on Evolve and stuff like that, but nothing of real substance.
05:02And some of these people have been there for a year or whatnot.
05:05So, you know, if they're not making progress, they're not even getting on Evolve, then maybe
05:11it's time for WWE to move on, find themselves some new recruits.
05:13They do these training sessions all the time, tryouts.
05:17They're just looking for some fresh blood and people who are going to latch on quickly.
05:20Now, some of the other ones kind of surprised me.
05:23Anya Roon was beginning, I felt like, to make a name for herself and, you know, do some things.
05:30And kind of surprised, especially with the look, kind of surprised to see her moving on.
05:35One of the ones that really shocked me is Xena Sterling.
05:38If you watched any seasons of LFG, especially the first season, Bully Ray was in such favor of this young
05:44lady.
05:45Really thought she was ready to move to NXT and get started.
05:49And she's had some matches.
05:51She's apparently had about 60 matches in different various WWE programming, how shows evolve, stuff like that.
05:58But hasn't apparently made enough progress to move to the NXT roster.
06:02And that one really strikes me because that first season of LFG, she looked like she was a breakout star
06:08of the future.
06:09And now, two short years later, and she's not even going to be on the roster.
06:12And that seems to be a common thread with several of these people who really did a great job in
06:18NXT's, or I'm sorry, in LFG, and just never made it in NXT.
06:23And we had cuts earlier this year where they had the same kind of situation.
06:26Some of these LFG kids being let go, who on that show, and I get it, not everybody watches that
06:31show.
06:31I did.
06:32And I thought some of these people really were talented, and they're just gone.
06:36So Xena joins that list.
06:38Another one who's from LFG, PJ Vassa, PNasty.
06:43She was a stud season one, season two.
06:46Legitimate threat every time she stepped in the ring.
06:49I am absolutely shocked that she is not in a more prominent position.
06:54It hasn't made it to a real television presence.
06:56Again, has appearances, just not at the level WWE is looking for.
07:02Adriana Rizzo, very shocking just because she has experience with Tony D and everything else.
07:09You really thought that she was set up well to get the rub from that faction and move on to
07:15bigger things.
07:16And that just hasn't happened.
07:18And I guess for whatever reason, they're not satisfied with her work.
07:22And that brings me to the two that shocked me the most.
07:26First off, Wendy Chu.
07:27Now, I get it.
07:27Wendy Chu's a little bit older than some of these other talents.
07:30But she's such a unique presence.
07:32She has that spooky, eerie character.
07:34She's done a lot of things with TNA in the past.
07:37Has done a ton with Evolve.
07:40And instead, she's just gone out of the company.
07:43I really thought she never got a great opportunity to really be a part of any major programs.
07:48Now, is that simply because of her wrestling skill?
07:51Is it because of her age?
07:52Is it the number of years she's been in WWE and not made it further on the roster?
07:56And if that's the case, this is one of the things I have to wonder.
07:59Look at the main roster, okay?
08:02And I'll give you a great example right now.
08:03Jordan Grace is a world beater talent.
08:06She's incredible.
08:07People, the reactions she got the first time she showed up to Royal Rumble, her appearances
08:11after that have all been super, super positive.
08:14And they can't even figure out what to do with her.
08:15Yet, you're going to bring Lola Vice up to the main roster where you already don't have
08:19enough time for the people you have on the main roster.
08:22And you could keep cultivating all the talent you want.
08:25But I almost feel like NXT needs to become like what SmackDown used to be.
08:30SmackDown needs to become what Raw used to be.
08:32Raw needs to continue to ascend.
08:34And Evolve needs to become what NXT was.
08:36And they need a new brand, maybe LFG, to be a legit brand because they have so freaking
08:42many people under contract.
08:44Instead, their approach is, instead of building more programs and getting more television time,
08:48and you know they're looking for a television deal for AAA, that would be another outlet to
08:52be able to showcase talent.
08:54Instead of just letting people go, and a lot of them, again, like PJ Vassa, like Zena Sterling,
09:01our LFG kids being let go, Wendy Chu, somebody who really could have contributed somewhere.
09:04I thought she was doing some really phenomenal work in Evolve, but she's gone.
09:09But I'm going to be honest, the one that really strikes me the most is Jasper Troy.
09:13This guy won season one on Booker T's team.
09:17This guy is a lights-out stud.
09:19Came to the main roster.
09:20Had a feud with Obafemi.
09:23And really got over in that feud with Obafemi.
09:26Went on to win the Speed Championship.
09:28Like, he's done some things of value on the NXT programming.
09:33I would have thought he was safe.
09:35I really would have.
09:36Him and a few others.
09:38And I'm just shocked of all the people that were released, Jasper Troy being a part of that.
09:43I really felt like he has the build.
09:46He looks great.
09:47He's somebody you could see on the main roster, really making waves.
09:50I always thought that, like, a year down the line, maybe you pair him up with Trick Williams,
09:55Carmelo, some other talents coming up from NXT, and really create a faction there.
10:00Maybe Stax, somebody like that.
10:02And instead, that's not going to happen.
10:04He's gone.
10:05Now, he's one of the people, when they say that this doesn't mean that it's an indictment
10:08on their talent or anything like that, I buy that because I think he's worldly talented.
10:12I'm a huge fan.
10:13And he's just gone now.
10:15Now, I don't know.
10:15These guys, apparently, all of them have a 30-day no-compete clause in their contract.
10:19Not the standard 90 that WWE has for main roster talents.
10:23Jasper Troy actually put online on X that, you know, basically got a countdown for 30 days,
10:29making it very clear that he can't wait until free agency.
10:31I hope somebody picks him up.
10:33And I get it.
10:34He could always work the indies.
10:35But it seems like a lot of these talents who are not on the main roster, many of them
10:39stop wrestling.
10:41They go into other endeavors and do other things professionally.
10:45And I really don't want to see that for Jasper Troy, for Xena, for P Nasty, for any of those
10:49people.
10:50I want all of those people, and if not more, to get a much better opportunity to continue this craft
10:58that they have, you know, the path that they've gone down for this craft, rather than, you know, potentially turning
11:04the page on it.
11:05Because I think they have a lot to offer.
11:07We'll have to wait and see where their next moves are.
11:09And obviously, people always jump to things.
11:12AEW can't keep signing everybody that WWE lets go.
11:15They have a huge bloated roster, too, where people can't get on TV.
11:18And TNA, maybe it's a great opportunity for TNA to get a mass influx of talent, because I really feel
11:24like they could benefit from that.
11:25Some of their shows get a little monotonous.
11:27But we're going to have to wait and see where these people end up.
11:30I'm excited if they get a good opportunity.
11:32I don't want to see them give up on the profession, or just be running indies for forever and a
11:38day, and never really get an opportunity to showcase on a bigger stage.
11:41I think some of these people are really, really, really talented.
11:44We're going to get into SmackDown, my reactions.
11:47I mean, look, SmackDown has been pretty solid as of late.
11:50A little bit of unpredictability recently, but this show, and I'm going to get into why, I felt like it
11:56was a little too much.
11:57I really do.
11:58This one was a little more predictable, and some things make me leave my head scratching a little bit.
12:01The show started with Gunther calling out Sami Zayn.
12:05He's angry with him and all his involvement in the World Championship picture recently.
12:09Zayn comes out.
12:11He's retreating through the crowd.
12:12Finn Balor appears, and it's clear that Balor is also upset with Zayn.
12:17Zayn tries to run away, going up the rampway.
12:20KO's music hits, and now KO's getting involved.
12:22It is obvious that we are headed towards another multi-person match for number one contendership to the World Heavyweight
12:29Championship.
12:30I should say the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
12:34But here's the problem, right?
12:36We had this match.
12:37We had it at SummerSlam, one of the biggest stages of the year.
12:40Why are all four of these people still competing at this level and with the same importance as they had
12:47prior to SummerSlam?
12:48I understand SummerSlam wasn't announced, and this will be, but I don't know, man.
12:52It just seems so repetitive, and I'm not a fan of not getting new, fresh matchups along the way.
12:57I think there's so much more that can be done, and we're going to get a little bit of that.
13:01We'll get to that in a little bit, but I certainly think there's certainly some meat on the bones still
13:06of some of these feuds if you went in one-on-one opportunities that we're not really getting right now,
13:11whether that's Balor going against Gunther or Balor and Zayn or KO and Gunther or whatever, some matches we've never
13:17seen before, and I feel like they're dropping the ball with this.
13:20Now, we get to another segment in the back.
13:22Nick Aldis talking to CM Punk, talking about World Championship matches that night, and Punk has an idea.
13:26He goes over to a planking Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae, and he basically talks up Gargano quite a bit
13:33and wants to put the championship on the line against Johnny Gargano.
13:37Now, I don't know if this was WWE's way of saying this storyline with Gargano planking is not working.
13:41The report's coming out last week that Gargano may be leaving the company.
13:44Maybe they were premature.
13:45Sure, this looks like this was the way they were going to wake Johnny Gargano up and get him into
13:51a meaningful match here for the first time in a very significant amount of time.
13:55I actually, from that moment on, was looking forward to this.
13:57I really wanted to see Punk and Gargano because Punk is a fan of Gargano, and I really thought he
14:02would give him a great match and make him look great.
14:05And, you know, we'll get to that a little bit later, but at least they held some promise and made
14:08me excited for the end of the show,
14:10despite the fact that you know darn well Gargano's not winning.
14:12From there, Fatal Influence taking on Charlotte Flair and Tatum Paxley.
14:17This is one that leaves my head scratching.
14:19You have Charlotte and Paxley win.
14:22Charlotte and Paxley aren't a tag team.
14:24Charlotte and Alexa are a tag team.
14:26Paxley's filling in because Alexa's injured.
14:28I don't want to see Charlotte and Paxley in that spot because now you pretty much have to give them
14:34a tag team championship opportunity,
14:35but where does Alexa fit into all this?
14:37And she's so injured, she doesn't appear tonight.
14:41And you have Charlotte and Paxley win, and then you have Jade, Cargill, B-Fab, and Meecheng come out.
14:45Now it's like five on two.
14:47They're getting laid out.
14:49This is just not a great look.
14:51And I just don't understand what they're doing at this point and why Charlotte and Tatum Paxley don't have any
14:58backup.
14:59If Alexa Bliss really is so injured she can't go, then I understand why she's not there, but you've got
15:04to put somebody else into the equation.
15:06Five on two doesn't work.
15:08It just doesn't work.
15:10If you're building towards something bigger in a couple months at Survivor Series, maybe I understand,
15:15but you still have to flirt and tease with some kind of a union or alliance of sorts with these
15:19people, with somebody, and that's simply not happening.
15:23I thought this was just a head scratcher.
15:24I would have had Fatal Influence win.
15:26I really would have.
15:26From there, we get a backstage segment with Paige and Nikki Bella.
15:30I hated the hustle, loyalty, and respect line that was used, referencing basically a callback to Nikki's relationship with John
15:36Cena.
15:36I think that's kind of stuff that's like old news.
15:39We don't need to see that.
15:40She and Cena get along.
15:41They're friendly.
15:41They're on good terms.
15:42But I'm sure it still brings back some questionable memories.
15:45I don't know why they feel the need to do this to the fans.
15:48Move on.
15:49And you've got to wonder how frustrated Creative is that they really had a beautiful opportunity for the Bellas versus
15:55Paige and AJ Lee.
15:56And now everything's just at a standstill because of Brie Bella's injury.
16:00I can't wait for this to get over their wrestling next week.
16:02Let's get it out of the way.
16:03Be done with it.
16:04From there, Nick Aldis, Chelsea Green in the ring for a segment basically with a doctor making it clear that
16:10if Chelsea Green wears a face mask, she is cleared to compete in the ring.
16:14Unfortunately, this is going to bring out the irresistible forces, Nia Jax, Lash Legend.
16:20They come out.
16:22And when it looks intimidating and like Chelsea Green is in trouble, here comes Tiffany Stratton.
16:27And we end up getting a match.
16:29We find out that next week, Nia Jax will get a shot at the interim women's championship currently held by
16:36Chelsea Green.
16:36And that that night, Nia Jax was going to face Tiffany Stratton, who she eventually defeats after some interference by
16:43Lash Legend.
16:44And then, of course, we have a situation where Chelsea Green has her mask ripped off by Nia.
16:49She won't give it back.
16:51I guess this works for me to a degree.
16:53I don't like seeing somebody who is so undefeatable like Tiffany Stratton suddenly becomes a jobber to the stars.
16:59I don't really like that.
16:59I don't understand that booking.
17:01They had her book like such a force previously, and this is, it kind of makes her look weak.
17:06It makes it look like she belongs in the mid card, and she used to be your top card attraction.
17:10So, I don't know.
17:10I just questioned some of that booking decision.
17:13Cody Rhodes and Corey Graves are in the back for an interview.
17:16Randy Orton ends up coming out, interrupting.
17:19We know that there is a stipulation that they can't make contact, you know, before their match at Sunday night's
17:25main event.
17:25And this is obviously Randy Orton trying to goad him in, and it doesn't work.
17:30It's just, it's so repetitive.
17:33So repetitive.
17:34You know, I said earlier, this show wasn't, you know, has been on fire lately.
17:37This week, if you can't tell from my reaction, this is not the week where they're on fire.
17:42There's some cool things, but a lot of this felt just so lazy in terms of booking.
17:47They really could have done so much more.
17:49And instead, this whole like keeping your hands off your opponent nonsense, why don't you do that for every match?
17:54We don't want these two to hit each other, beat each other up, and neither one of them is the
17:57champion.
17:58So why not?
17:59They're just talents.
18:00You know what I mean?
18:01Why doesn't Adam Pearce say to Royce Keys and his faction, OTM, that they can't put their hands on Solo
18:09or Jacob or anybody else?
18:11Why isn't that just a thing?
18:12No.
18:13WWE books these ridiculously stupid storylines where like, oh, we're going to stop these two from beating each other up.
18:18But at the same time, only a few minutes later, we got Blake Monroe and Julia going at it in
18:23the back.
18:24And that's just okay.
18:25Why is it okay for some and not everybody?
18:27Why do we keep having these like stupid sidebars that are not really serving a purpose when it makes everything
18:33so convoluted and stupid and non-uniform across the board?
18:36Your company can't have a rule set that only works for, you know, the important people because you really make
18:42the other people look like trash.
18:43You know, I don't know.
18:44I just think this is terrible, terrible planning on WWE's part.
18:48Now, the first really exciting thing we get to this night, Kiyoki Shinsuke Nakamura taking on Kit Wilson and The
18:55Miz.
18:56I'm thrilled for the debut of Hiromu Takahashi.
19:00They look fantastic in the ring.
19:02Of course they pick up the win.
19:03I feel bad for The Miz because this week is like his 25th anniversary in WWE and, you know, John
19:09Cena tweeted him out congratulations and he was online saying, oh, you know, the best is yet to come kind
19:14of stuff or I'm not finished yet or all that stuff.
19:16And then you come out and you're getting jobbed, you know, what do you have left?
19:21How great can you be?
19:22You almost never win.
19:23And what happened to like the Dan Housen thing?
19:26We haven't seen Dan Housen in weeks, really.
19:28And now all of a sudden it went from where like you were Frankenstein's monster with Dan Housen to you're
19:32just regular wrestlers again.
19:33Did we just drop that storyline?
19:35Did people get so frustrated with seeing so much of Dan Housen?
19:38We're just not going to use him anymore.
19:39Like it's a little bit crazy, if you ask me, the way they're booking this little, little shocking.
19:45From there, after the match, when, of course, Nakamura and Kiyoki win, the MFTs with Haku come to the ring.
19:51There is a stare down.
19:52It's obvious where this is headed.
19:53But then after that, we get a really exciting segment in the back.
19:56Damian Priest and R-Truth talking to the War Raiders about their championship opportunity next week for the AAA Tag
20:02Team Championship.
20:03Now, look, I'll be honest.
20:04I don't expect Priest and Truth to win.
20:06I expect the War Raiders to retain.
20:09I hate to say it, but I really feel like Damian Priest is going heel here.
20:14He'll probably turn on R-Truth.
20:15I understand it if you're trying to revitalize his character.
20:18I just don't think he needs it.
20:20I feel like we've got a good spread of good and bad at the top of the card.
20:23But whatever it takes to get him back in the World Championship picture, I'm on board for.
20:27R-Truth, I just feel bad because he looked so amazing when he was doing that angry character when he
20:32first came back after that crazy contract lapsing experience.
20:37And ever since then, he's back to being just a purely a comedic character.
20:39And I just don't like it.
20:40It makes him look weaker than it needs to.
20:42I'm thrilled he got another Tag Team Championship run out of everything.
20:45But I just feel like they could do so much more.
20:49After that's when we had the Blake Monroe-Julia thing.
20:51More physicality in the back that doesn't make any sense when you factor in everything that happened earlier in the
20:55show.
20:56I'm kind of bored to death with the Blake Monroe-Julia stuff.
20:58I like seeing Julia in a prominent role, but I want to see Blake Monroe actually have a match in
21:02WWE, and we aren't seeing that.
21:04It's kind of ridiculous at this point.
21:06She's been called up since WrestleMania.
21:08You know, we're talking months and months and months.
21:10It's weird to me.
21:11It all feels just wrong.
21:12There's a backstage segment with Sami Zayn and Johnny Gargano.
21:15Zayn really talking up how happy he is for Gargano.
21:18Really offering his support.
21:20You know it's disingenuous.
21:22You know it's not going to really lead to anything positive.
21:24But the fact that after so many months of Gargano just planking and doing nothing, him having a prominent role,
21:33is pretty exciting.
21:35I'm glad that he's finally getting to do something.
21:36We then lead into the match.
21:38CM Punk and Johnny Gargano.
21:40Solid match top to bottom.
21:42A lot of near-fall stuff.
21:43And then at some point, Sami Zayn comes out.
21:46He's trying to get involved.
21:47There's a spot where Candice LeRae ends up taking out CM Punk with a Hurricanrana.
21:54Gargano hits a finishing move, which Punk kicks out.
21:57We end up having Kevin Owens appear and take out Sami Zayn, which is very strange.
22:04We go from there to Gunther coming out and taking out Kevin Owens, which leads to Finn Balor coming out
22:09and taking out Gunther.
22:11It's just a total non-stop melee.
22:14I'm not really sure how I feel about all this.
22:18It's just a little much.
22:19It's a little much for me.
22:21I don't think we needed all this.
22:24You have Aldis coming out and forcing people to go to the back.
22:28And Sami Zayn is up on the ramp in the ring.
22:30Um, there's, there's a GTS on Gargano and Punk wins the match.
22:36Um, and then, you know, Punk wants a match next week.
22:40He wants to have he and Sami Zayn for the WWE Undisputed Championship and Nick Owens grants that.
22:47So, you know, I, I don't, I don't know.
22:50I don't love it.
22:51I really don't love it.
22:53Um, I wish it was a little more cut and dry.
22:55I, I'm thrilled that Johnny Gargano got to do something of meaning and hopefully he'll stop planking now and actually
23:01become part of the active roster.
23:03I like Nick Aldis's interactions here.
23:05I just wish we were getting more physicality from Nick Aldis.
23:08Um, not thrilled with, you know, Punk and Sami Zayn yet again, but I guess we can go there, give
23:15him this one-on-one match that they've been postponing for forever in a day.
23:18But on a regular SmackDown episode is weird for me.
23:21That could have easily been added to Sunday night's main event.
23:23Um, but I don't know.
23:25We'll have to wait and see.
23:25Now, of course, lately, as you guys who tune in every week know, I've been starting to give like these
23:30star ratings, one to five stars.
23:31This show, I'm going to be honest.
23:33I was, there was very little that I was excited about.
23:36There was a lot more that I was frustrated with.
23:38So instead of giving it a great rating, I'm looking at this, I'm going out of five stars.
23:43I'm looking at this and saying, uh, two and three quarter.
23:47Really?
23:47You know, cause I don't understand some of the booking.
23:49I don't like some of the decisions.
23:50So I'm going two and three quarter stars for SmackDown this week.
23:53I don't know.
23:54You tell me in the comments, how you feel.
23:56And listen, I'm available on every social media platform you can dream of pretty much.
