Do the Patriots and/or Mike Vrabel prioritize D-Line over other positions? Do they prioritize D-Line over Corners? Does that factor into the Christian Gonzalez contract discussions?
Mike Vrabel discusses position priority
Transcript
00:00Adam Schefter had floated this notion that this week that you prioritize the linemen and getting pressure over corners.
00:09Is that accurate?
00:12I mean, I listen, I love defensive football players and I don't want to sit there and say I value
00:23one over the other.
00:24I don't.
00:25You know, I mean, I think that you have to affect a quarterback.
00:27And I've said this numerous and multiple times.
00:30There's multiple ways to do it.
00:33You can rush them.
00:34You can be able to, you know, whatever we have to do, whether that's the coverage to intercept the football,
00:41to have pass breakups, to tip the ball at the line of scrimmage and have somebody intercept it, to whether
00:49you're playing man coverage or zone coverage and reroute.
00:52Like, at the end of the day, we have to identify guys that can affect the quarterback.
00:57And that's either through the pass rush or guys in coverage that can take guys away or turn the ball
01:05over, intercept it, ball production, linebackers, and people that can hammer the football out and create turnovers.
01:12That, that's what wins.
01:14And so anybody on our defense that can do those things, that's what I value.
01:21With regard to Christian, your longtime teammate, Rodney Harrison, says that if this deal doesn't get done, it sends a
01:30bad message to free agents about coming to play here.
01:33Is there any concern on your part about that?
01:39I mean, everybody's entitled to their opinion.
01:41We've seen that, you know.
01:43So, again, I think that we've been able to identify guys and bring them in that want to be here.
01:51That's the most important thing.
01:53We're not going to please everybody in this business.
01:57But, you know, I mean, the guys that we've tried to target and bring in, you know, in free agency,
02:02we have.
02:03And then we have to continue to draft good football players and develop them and then retain them.
02:08Some interesting things from the coach as they get ready to open the season on Wednesday with or without Christian
02:19Gonzalez.
02:20Why did they build the roster this way then?
02:22They have no pass rush.
02:25Yeah, I mean, I guess maybe they misjudged what he was going to be looking for.
02:31And maybe Mike Vrabel's okay with $90 million guaranteed when it comes to the future of the defense and how
02:39he wants to build it.
02:40Maybe he's not.
02:41I don't.
02:42But, like, if you think there's other ways you can impact it, then you should at least be prepared to
02:47impact it.
02:47Like, because what's if Gonzalez gets hurt?
02:49He's gotten hurt.
02:50Like, you have, like, Wiggy's been talking about the pass rush since the season ended.
02:53Yeah, I think it's more of what you said prior or you just said, Greg.
03:00I think it's more of like, all right, we'll give you 90, 95, whatever that number may be, my opinion.
03:05We'll give you that.
03:07And they're probably thinking heading into this before the Trent McDuffie deal gets done.
03:12Like, that's what we think you're worth.
03:15And that's the biggest thing, like, in any negotiation, right, is I know everybody wants to play chicken and that
03:21kind of thing.
03:22Players always feel like, here's what I believe I'm worth.
03:26And the organization is going, no, we don't believe you're worth that.
03:30Then you have this framework of contracts that lay out your position and the value that it's worth.
03:36And you feel like, oh, I'm worth what those guys make.
03:40But they don't value your position like Seattle values it or like the Rams value the position of the cornerback
03:49to give that type of money.
03:50Is there any way they played, like, chicken with Trey Hendrickson in the offseason and were thinking they were going
03:56to be able to get him below market because there was a period of time where it took him a
04:00while to sign.
04:01But then the Ravens came in and scooped him up because they were able to nix the deal they originally
04:05did with Max Crosby.
04:06Like, do you think there's any chance that something like that happened?
04:09And that's why they have no pass rush on a team where a guy, the coach clearly, clearly values it.
04:16But I also think the Trey Hendrickson thing, though, is it is about value in a position, but it's also
04:22about valuing a player, right?
04:24So if you look at the Trey Hendrick situation, he got four years, $112 million, right?
04:31And out of that, 60 of it was or 80 of it was fully guaranteed.
04:36Like, that's nowhere near what Micah Parsons or a Will Anderson Jr. gets.
04:42So, but maybe they felt like, well, that's too rich for our blood for that type of play.
04:46He's what, 32 years old or 31 years old?
04:49Yeah.
04:49You know, so it's like, that's the thing about these things.
04:52And if you're an organization that had Brady who always took less, you don't think that they go there and
04:58say.
04:59Yeah, but if Christian Gonzalez believes that Mike Rabel doesn't think that he's worth what he's asking,
05:03then that would fracture a relationship, I would imagine.
05:05So if Rabel's saying everything's cool between them two, but to separate himself from Elliott Wolfe and the Crafts,
05:12do you think it lies on Mike Rabel that he values him a certain type of way?
05:16Like, in my opinion, the way in which he answered that question, Mike Rabel thinks he should get that money.
05:21And it falls on the Crafts and Elliott Wolfe that don't.
05:24Hmm.
