Should Jameson Williams be included in this list?
Transcript
00:00All right, so we found a list, a prediction of who the top 100 players
00:03are going to be in the NFL this year.
00:07I gave you six names from the Lions.
00:10One of them was left off out of the top 100.
00:14Jameer Gibbs, Amon Ross St. Brown, Jamison Williams,
00:17Penny Sewell, Jared Goff, or Aiden Hutchinson.
00:22Who do you think it is?
00:24So two names come to mind for me,
00:27because I think anybody would have Penny Sewell off this list
00:31or Aiden Hutchinson off this list or Jameer Gibbs off this list is a fool.
00:35Amon Ross St. Brown is clearly one of the top five receivers
00:37in the National Football League.
00:39You'd be a fool not to have him there.
00:42Jared Goff is, as much as I think he flat out belongs on that list,
00:50I can see how people would leave him off.
00:53We know that even fans here are a little bit, he's not polarizing.
00:58But there are opposite opinions.
01:00It's just that it's not that big of a percentage group.
01:03I don't think it's him.
01:04I would imagine it's Jamison Williams.
01:07Jamo has put up back-to-back seasons where he's been very good,
01:111,000 yards each of the last couple of years.
01:13They're almost identical seasons that he's had.
01:15And though I expect him to have a big year this year
01:18and really improve on that,
01:20because it sounds like he's doing everything right in training camp
01:24and in the offseason,
01:26I can see where people would say no,
01:28because there are so many really good receivers
01:30in the National Football League that, okay,
01:33if they're a dime a dozen,
01:34are there 20 that are better than Jamo?
01:37Are there 30 better than Jamo?
01:39I don't know.
01:40I like Jamo a lot,
01:42and I might have him on my top 100 list,
01:44but I could see that he would be left off by others.
01:47So I'm going to say it's Jamison Williams is not on this list.
01:51Kang, who do you think would be left off?
01:53You said top 100 players for 2026?
01:57Yeah, these are going to be the top 100 players.
01:59So after doing this, like you, Gator,
02:02and I came down to obviously Jared Goff
02:04and Jamison Williams as well.
02:06The other four are just too good
02:08to not be on anyone's top 100 list.
02:10So between Jared Goff and Jamison Williams,
02:13I thought, yes, I think Jared Goff is vastly underrated,
02:17especially here locally too,
02:19how good he is and how valuable he is
02:20as a player in this league, on this team.
02:23Jamison Williams, I think he hasn't hit his potential yet
02:28and hit his ceiling yet.
02:30And because the list is for 2026,
02:32I think he's going to make the list.
02:34And Jared Goff is not,
02:35because a lot of people think
02:37we've already seen maybe the best of Jared Goff.
02:40You know what I'm saying?
02:41So my rationale is Jared Goff is not on the list
02:44and Jamison Williams is
02:45because they expect big things from him.
02:46Okay, here is the Lions and where they rank.
02:49I did not include Jack Campbell in that grouping
02:52because I think everybody would have guessed Jack Campbell
02:55because they're suspicious that the only reason
02:57I'm bringing it up is because my beloved,
02:58middle linebacker didn't make the list.
03:00He did make the list.
03:02He's in at number 92.
03:03Boy, you did that.
03:04You know what, Don?
03:05What?
03:05It's very big of you.
03:07Yep.
03:07You took an opportunity where you anticipated
03:09everybody would say, oh, he's off the list,
03:11which would have given you the big opportunity to say, F you.
03:15But you took the high road.
03:16I did.
03:17All right.
03:18He is at number 92.
03:20At number 77, Jared Goff.
03:27Then we go all the way up to number 22, Amon Ross St. Brown,
03:31number 18, Jameer Gibbs, number 16, Aiden Hutchinson,
03:38number 12, Penny Sewell.
03:4012.
03:41Highest ranked Detroit Lions.
03:44So J-Mo is the correct answer.
03:46J-Mo did not make this list.
03:49And I have such high expectations for the kind of season he's going to have.
03:55I think, I totally think he'll be on this list when the year is done.
04:00Now, remember, this is not what they've done.
04:02This is ESPN put it together, 12 NFL analysts and reporters,
04:07to rank the players based on expected performance for the 2026 season.
04:12But, I mean, am I wrong?
04:14A monster season loading for Jameis and Williams?
04:18Well, understand that there are every other position group is out there.
04:23It's not just wide receivers.
04:25So are there some rookies coming into the league that they feel are going to take
04:29from day one will be better?
04:31Maybe.
04:32Are there players last year they feel could leapfrog them?
04:35Maybe.
04:37But it's every other position.
04:39You start getting to the minutiae of it.
04:41I mean, there's so many good players in the league.
04:44But for the Lions to have, they have six on this list,
04:50and what could be a seventh, I think speaks volumes to where this team is at
04:55right now, particularly when they have the cluster of players inside the top 25
04:58or whatever.
04:59It's interesting.
05:00But to your point, and also more so to Kane's point,
05:03because Kane really brought this up about what the expectation is
05:08for Jameau this year coming into it,
05:10it does seem a little odd because everybody is raving about Jameis and Williams.
05:14Did nobody talk to Detroit media about Jameis and Williams in training camp this year?
05:20I don't know.
05:22No, he was out there.
05:23And first of all, kudos to you, Gator, good call.
05:25Secondly, I'm glad Jared Goff is getting some praise.
05:28I just feel like people just sleep on him because he's just not an exciting,
05:31quote-unquote, you know, he doesn't make those plays with his feet, obviously.
05:35He's got a good arm, but it's not a cannon arm, right, and all that stuff.
05:39So I'm glad they recognize that he's really good.
05:42The Jameson Williams thing is, what might hurt him in this list, Doug,
05:45is maybe the wide receiver position.
05:47It's a crowded position.
05:48I mean, there's a lot of people that make a lot of catches.
05:50It's a passing league, right?
05:51People, if you play fantasy football, you realize a lot of guys are expected
05:55to put up some decent numbers.
05:56He's one of those people.
05:57So maybe he just missed it by just being on the outside of that 100.
06:01Yeah, the Goff thing is we talk about this here in Detroit.
06:07People in sports love bright, shiny things.
06:12And Jared Goff in the 1970s in the National Football League
06:16would have been a bright, shiny thing
06:20because he could throw, he could make throws
06:24that not a lot of quarterbacks were making,
06:26and he wouldn't get downgraded for not being mobile.
06:29Right.
06:29Because almost nobody was mobile.
06:32No, when you get in the 70s and the 80s
06:34when you get Dan Fouts and Dan Marino out there.
06:38Yeah.
06:39But in this era, the addition of mobility is a useful skill set.
06:44I've talked about this on the air forever.
06:46For the quarterback position,
06:48it's way down the list of traits that I want for my quarterback.
06:51Do I want it?
06:52Yes.
06:53Do I want other things more?
06:55Yes.
06:56Ability to process information quickly,
06:58arm strength, accuracy,
07:01you know, all kinds of leadership skills, work ethic.
07:05You know, eventually I'll get down to mobility.
07:08But there's an underrated portion of mobility,
07:11and that's being mobile while keeping your eyes down the field.
07:13Like, I'm keeping this play alive,
07:15and I'm moving around in the pocket,
07:18and I can feel the pressure around me,
07:20and I'm creating another half second or second for myself
07:24because I've got a good feel for the pocket
07:26and can move around in the pocket
07:27while keeping my eyes downfield and keep a play alive
07:30to eventually make a throw.
07:32Other guys head down, take off.
07:34Fifteen yards later, everybody's going nuts.
07:37But Goff gets downgraded because he is not,
07:40he's not a bright, shiny thing.
07:42He's not flashy.
07:44And the throws that he can make,
07:48I mean, all the great quarterbacks can.
07:50And what he is really good at is processing information.
07:55I tweeted that thing out from The Athletic,
07:57him describing, he did a deep dive interview
07:59with a writer from The Athletic on YouTube.
08:02It was fascinating to listen to him look back at plays
08:05and how much he manipulates defenses
08:09with his eyes, with his first read,
08:13and the things he does pre-snap
08:15to get the play, to get them into a successful play call.
08:19Yeah, I suspect that most of the really good quarterbacks
08:22in the National Football League,
08:23that's exactly what they do, and they have to do that.
08:25And he probably learned that from somebody else.
08:27And it's great to have that.
08:29What I love about Goff is between his ears.
08:31I think he's a cerebral assassin,
08:34one of the smartest quarterbacks in the league.
08:36And when you can back that up with a talented arm,
08:39you're in great shape.
08:422, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
08:45Okay, there's more on this list I want to talk about.
08:47We will get to that today at 1231.
08:49Also coming up a little bit later,
08:50Gator, another edition of Are You Going to Eat That?
08:52It is Carson Anderson here on 97.1.
