00:31Good afternoon, good afternoon, and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34On the very day just one year ago, that great city of Harbin in China was brought to a grinding
00:40halt.
00:41Why so? Smog. It absolutely closed the city down.
00:45The schools were closed, the roads were closed, the airports were closed.
00:48And the city authorities put this down to firing up the city's central heating system.
00:55Can you imagine? It was a particularly cold day.
00:58Everybody said, oh, it's a bit chilly, I'll switch on the central heating.
01:01Boom. The fumes came out and down came the smog.
01:04And I remember when I was on a mountain.
01:08You might be able to follow this if you listen closely.
01:11I found myself in a blizzard, which in a sense was a bit like smog.
01:14And it's terrifying because I was in a blizzard on my own.
01:18And the thing is, you become completely disorientated.
01:20You don't know where you are.
01:22It was actually very frightening.
01:24But enough about me.
01:25What about your foggy story?
01:27Well, you don't notice it until...
01:29Have you been to L.A.?
01:31Mmm...
01:31Sort of once for about an hour.
01:33Oh, I was in L.A. and you don't notice how smoggy it is.
01:35But I drove towards the coast.
01:37And there's a moment, just on the road, where you can suddenly breathe.
01:41And that's when you realise how smoggy it is there.
01:42Because you suddenly get fresh air and you can suddenly smell the sea and the flowers.
01:46But just L.A. is just a city of smog.
01:50Yeah, actually, I'm glad you've mentioned that.
01:52Because I do, I have been in a pea soupa.
01:55May I offer you Calcutta?
01:58Why, thank you.
01:59It's got like a yellow cloud over it.
02:03So that's what I like about...
02:03Calcutta's very, very polluted.
02:05Southend on sea.
02:06You get nice, fresh sea air.
02:07It's lovely.
02:07Everybody go.
02:08Let's all go to Southend.
02:09Leave Calcutta, go to Southend.
02:11Exactly.
02:12Now we've got to go down to business.
02:13We've got with us today Johnny Rye, a student from Loughborough, studying politics and French at Southampton.
02:19Keen cricketer.
02:20Is that right, Johnny?
02:21Very.
02:21From Southampton University Cricket Club.
02:23And he's a big fan of Friends.
02:25You've watched every episode?
02:27Yeah, I love it.
02:27It's brilliant.
02:28Good for you.
02:29Now you're joined today by Richard Cowling.
02:31Comes just down the road from Rochdale.
02:33Full-time dad to daughter Emma and son Samuel.
02:36Rugby league match official.
02:38And I'm told, Richard, that you officiated in the 2009 Challenge Cup final at Wembley.
02:43Yeah, phenomenal experience.
02:45And what was your role there?
02:47I was the reserve touch judge, so I didn't get to be on the pitch, but just to be involved
02:51in the game and such a big occasion.
02:53It was fantastic.
02:54Well, next time maybe.
02:55Let's have a big round of applause then for Richard and Johnny Rye.
03:04APPLAUSE
03:05Now, what about Susie?
03:06Have you got any little foggy stories for us?
03:09I haven't really got a foggy story.
03:10Although fog on the river when you're out rowing is not very nice.
03:14Especially if you're sculling, you have to look backwards as it is.
03:16And if it's foggy, you can hit a tree.
03:20It sounds funny, but it's not fun, I can tell you that.
03:22But an early morning mist on the river, what could be better?
03:25Absolutely beautiful mist, yeah.
03:27And next to you, of course, today we have the wonderful Dave Myers.
03:30He's a biker, he's hairy, and he's just brought out a new book.
03:34Dave, I want to talk to you about this later on.
03:36Yep.
03:36Called The Hairy Dieters.
03:39Yes, it's just good eating, Nick.
03:41Indeed.
03:42Now then, Johnny, take us away on the wonderful Countdown Letters game.
03:47Hi, Rachel.
03:48Hi, Johnny.
03:48Can I have a consonant, please?
03:50Start today with T.
03:52And another one, please.

04:19And here's the Countdown Clock.
04:21And a Noel.
04:22And a fourth.
04:24And a tenth.
04:50Also, have a timed elf.
04:52Yes, Johnny?
04:53Seven.
04:54A seven. How about Richard?
04:55A seven.
04:56Two sevens, Johnny?
04:57Nappies.
04:58Thank you, Richard.
04:59I've come for panties.
05:01Well, that's a little closely connected there.
05:04Panties and nappies.
05:06Anything else there?
05:09Dave?
05:09Well, we got quite excited, didn't we?
05:10Because we thought we had an eight that was totally Dave.
05:13Appetise.
05:14What could be better coming from you?
05:16No, but apparently Susan said it's not allowed.
05:18Appetiser or appetite, but not appetise, unfortunately.
05:21We can talk about appetising, obviously.
05:23Yeah.
05:23So there is a seven sapient from us.
05:27Very good.
05:27All right, so seven points apiece.
05:30Richard's on now then.
05:32Richard.
05:32Hi, Rachel.
05:33Hi, Richard.
05:34Can I have a consonant, please?

06:53Yeah, I know, yeah, I know.
06:54Unfortunately.

06:57Yeah, we've got two more sixes.
06:58We've got studio.
07:00Yes.
07:00And sodded.
07:01Very good.
07:02That's it?
07:03We have toddy as well, if you want something nice and warmly.

08:16Lovely, 493.
08:18And Richard?
08:18Just have us all slightly different.
08:2050 times 10 is 500.

13:59that before 82 yeah
14:01well done well done gives you a bit of a cushion there Johnny 42 to 31 but now let's turn
14:08to Dave
14:09Dave Myers before you became one of the wonderful hairy bikers enthralling us with your cooking tips
14:16and writing books you were in a very different profession yes I've worked still in film and
14:23television but I was a makeup designer and I used to do a lot of special effects makeup and you
14:28know
14:28I was responsible for the look of people in films but one of the nicest things was meeting some of
14:33my heroes you know as the years went on I was very very lucky I mean I work with Roger
14:38Moore for
14:38instance but I think for me the highlight was I did a film in South Africa with Dennis Hopper and
14:44he nearly got me the sack he turned up one night he was like two days from shooting and he
14:50had the
14:50most wonderful kind of Hollywood haircut and ever since the days of born to be wild I was in awe
14:55of
14:56him and he said he wanted to shave his head so I said well I I haven't heard this Dennis
15:02I sort of
15:03I think we better check that with the producers went no no no no you need to shave my head
15:07and I
15:08thought well what do I do you know because I was in South Africa I thought to get sacked and
15:12so anyway
15:13I Dennis Hopper asked you to shave his head so I shaved his head and when he did that like
15:19the reveal to
15:20the producers of the show and tell Dennis of course he's bald as a coot which wasn't what he hired
15:25but
15:26um and I nearly got the sack but I think one of the nicest parts we were filming in the
15:30Great Carew for
15:31three weeks and we camped out there for the three weeks on Saturday nights a band would come up from
15:36Cape Town and everybody would party around a bonfire and about two o'clock in the morning I was sitting
15:42there with Dennis Hopper and we were watching shooting stars together and I thought that's not
15:46bad for a lad from Barrow In Furnace really brilliant story but tell me this because he was a bit
15:53of a
15:53character wasn't he oh yeah so he waltzed in said I want it shaved and what did the producer say
15:59did he
15:59go nobody didn't tell him he didn't want to tell the producers when the producer eventually saw this
16:04oh I got the blame for it and then Dennis said no no no I want it like this extraordinary
16:10just as well he
16:11said look I told him oh yes otherwise you would have been in I'd have asked for a signature somewhere
16:16he was he was lovely to just sit and talk with you know aside from all the wild stuff he
16:21was a great
16:21art collector had a great eye for the art and he left because he's dead now poor old chap yeah
16:26good man too
16:27he was he was fine but I mean when when I knew him he was he was very much a
16:31Perrier water drinking golf
16:33player he used to play golf with Alice Cooper and he went back to America for for his Christmas
16:39holidays I stayed in South Africa and they said there's a certain brand of aftershave that Dennis
16:44Hopper used to wear and he left all his suits all his luggage in my room and his golf clubs
16:49and so
16:49my room smelled of Dennis Hopper and it's so funny whenever I I smell that particular cologne which is
16:56a really popular one yeah I think it's Dennis Hopper and I can't tell anybody to just think I'll be
17:01a
17:01Wally really I tell you something Dennis Hopper wasn't wearing that aftershave whatever it was
17:07in apocalypse now do you remember that when he was a wild photographer no I was mad crazy energy
17:13crazy crazy great to talk to you great to talk to you so 42 to 31 Johnny in the lead
17:19Johnny's back
17:20with a letter's game can I have a consonant thank you Johnny J and another one please L and another

21:12906.
21:12So, Johnny.
21:13Nine times 100.

21:20Very good.

21:23Let's have a tea time teaser, which is Cabin Boy.

21:31The Cabin Boy enjoyed a nice hot drink.
21:51Welcome back.
21:52I left with the clue, the Cabin Boy enjoyed a nice hot drink.
21:55And the answer is a Babycino.
21:59Babycino.
22:00What is this Babycino-cino?
22:02Babycino.
22:02What is it?
22:03So, it's a baby version of a cappuccino.
22:05So, if you take your child into a popular coffee shop, you can get, it's just a cup of frothed
22:11milk.
22:12So, they can sort of copy you and drink a cup of something frothy.
22:16For sophisticated toddlers?
22:18Sophisticated toddlers.
22:19How much are they charged for this?

24:04There's melting.
24:06And also, you'd probably prefer a gimlet to a babycino.
24:10It's a cocktail.
24:12A gimlet?
24:12Oh, it is, isn't it?
24:14But it's also a little skewer thing, isn't it?
24:16It is at all as well.
24:17Yeah.

25:28A seven.
25:29Richard?
25:30Just a six.
25:31Sir Richard?
25:33Quotes.
25:34And Johnny?
25:35Outages.
25:36Outages.
25:37Our old friend, the outage.
25:39Yes, the power cuts.
25:40Absolutely, in North America.
25:41What else have we got there?
25:43Dave?
25:43Another seven.
25:45We've got foulest.
25:46Yes.
25:46Anything else?
25:47That was better, actually.
25:47No, outages and foulest are two sevens.
25:49All right.
25:5079 plays, 54.
25:51But now we're back with Susie.
25:54Susie's origins of words.
25:56Well, Nick, I had a nice email from Andy Davies in Ipswich in Suffolk.
26:01And he asked where the expression passing the buck comes from.
26:04And he says, I assume it's origins lie across the Atlantic.
26:08And he's absolutely right.
26:09It is American.
26:11But the original buck was not the American slang term for a dollar.
26:15But it was an article that was used in the game of poker.
26:18And that really took off in the second half of the 19th century.
26:21And to avoid any dirty dealing by players, the deal in a poker game changes hands in the course of
26:26a session.
26:27And the person next in line, if you like, to deal would traditionally be given a marker of some kind.
26:32And that marker was very often a knife.
26:35And it wasn't just any old knife.
26:36It was a knife that was made of buck's horn.
26:39And so originally would pass the knife.
26:42And then eventually it got shortened to buck.
26:44So they would literally pass the buck on from one player to the next.
26:48And actually, that might well be a little bit later on the origin of the American buck that is a
26:52dollar.
26:53Because for some time, apparently, they used to use silver dollars as the marker for the dealer in a game.
26:58But the British obviously loved poker.
27:00Because when you delve into the idioms that come from card playing or the poker game, it's unbelievable how many
27:07you come across.
27:07Just to give you a few, you can have your card stacked against you.
27:10You can call someone's bluff.
27:11You can cash in your chips, unfortunately.
27:13Come up trumps.
27:14Be dealt a bad hand for someone's hand.
27:17Hold all the cards.
27:18You can be the joker in the pack.
27:20Lay your cards on the table.
27:21Load the dice.
27:23And play your cards close to the chest.
27:25And there are literally hundreds of them.
27:26So I don't know if you're a card player, Nick, or a poker player.
27:29But certainly the British, at some point in our history, certainly were.
27:32Brilliant stars.
27:33Very good.
27:37Wonderful.
27:3879 plays.
27:3954.
27:40Richard, I invite you to a letters game.

30:52got info war. This is seven. An info war? Yeah. An information war? Yeah, it's another term
30:58for a cyber war. So it's the use of computers to disrupt the activities of a state or an
31:03organisation. I see. Or it can just generally be propaganda via electronic media. Absolutely.
31:09A lot of that going on at the moment. Anything else, Susie? No, that was our seven. Very good.
31:13All right. 68 plays. Johnny's 79. You're catching up there, Richard. Late, but it's sort of possible.
31:21Let's see how you get on with your numbers game. Can I get three large and three small,
