12:51Well, of late we've been doing our Rip Off Britain series, which is about how people feel they're being ripped
12:57off.
12:57And, of course, in the last 12 months, everything seems to gear towards energy prices and banking in particular.
13:04But currently I'm doing a program called Doorstep Crime 999.
13:09And it's how people are scammed on their own doorstep.
13:11And if you think about it, we've all got a front door and we're all open to a scam, whether
13:15we like to think of it or not.
13:17But it's quite remarkable, finding it very interesting, because one man, believe it or not, was scammed out of £520
13:24,000.
13:27And, again, it's too long to go into all the details, but a lot of the people who scammed, a
13:31lot of the rogue traders, very charming, very plausible, very friendly.
13:37And this poor man, he'd lost his mum recently, and he was living in a very beautiful five-bedroom house.
13:43And, you know, this rogue trader came up and said, I'd like to treat your driveway.
13:47I'm in the area.
13:48He treated me with some stuff.
13:49And then he goes on to say, I think your house is subsiding, because I've seen some evidence of it.
13:55And you see, from the surface, you think, how can anybody be scammed out of that?
14:00And this man was handing over £30,000, £40,000, £50,000 at a time, sometimes in cash.
14:05So you say to him, but, John, why would you ever think that's the way to pay for a job?
14:10And he just goes, well, I mean, they convinced me that I needed all the big machinery, and my house
14:14was going to fall down.
14:15But it's very sad, because that man, you know, lost his house.
14:18He had to sell his house to pay the so-called debt.
14:22And because he was afraid of, they said, they'd take him to the police.
14:25And now he's living in rented accommodation, you know, not very good rented accommodation.
14:29It's so sad.
14:30So it's a warning to all of us, you know, don't answer the door to anybody.
14:33And that's really the message, you know, unless you really know the person, or they've made an appointment, don't let
14:39them in.
14:39Simple as that.
14:40What a wicked thing to do.
14:42Wicked.
14:42But it's also, and sadly, the most vulnerable people are scammed first and foremost.
14:47You know, it's really sad.
14:48Yeah, yeah.
14:49And had the con man committed a criminal offence, or had he just sort of...
14:55Oh, well, now he's in prison, so he has been caught.
14:57But then the analysis is that, I can't remember the exact figures, but let's say there were eight people who'd
15:03been scammed.
15:04And in the end, he only has so much money that he'll put into the court or can offer.
15:09So it has to be shared out by eight people, which means our case that lost, you know, $520,000
15:15might only get $120,000 back.
15:17So, you know, it's very sad, all right.
15:19So be warned, folks.
