00:32Good afternoon. Welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34On the very day that way back in 1620, the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, heading for Virginia.
00:42Unfortunately, the weather was rotten, and they pitched up at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts.
00:48I began to wonder whether I've ever encountered adverse weather conditions or anything else, actually, that made me change my
00:54route.
00:54And I cast my mind back a few years ago when I was involved in a program called Round the
00:59World in 80 Days.
01:00And the producers in their wisdom thought it would be rather smart to send Syrah Khan and I to Iraq
01:07during the war.
01:08And when we got to the border with Iran, fortunately, the Iranians said, go away, BBC.
01:16What we had to do was then go north to Georgia and then to Azerbaijan and then cross the Caspian
01:22into Kazakhstan.
01:23And we had to cheat. We hired a huge Russian helicopter and every rivet in this thing danced, pleading to
01:32be free.
01:33Tell us what misfortune has befallen you that made you change your route or indeed pitch up in the wrong
01:40place.
01:40Well, you know, very similar story, Nick. I once went all the way around the M60.
01:47Very good. Well, I think we probably we probably reached the end of this little part of the program.
01:53And so I swivel around to meet Alex Fish, an accountant from London, who, after beating Natalie Corriette, 106-57,
02:04very good score, finds himself competing with Michael Douglas.
02:09How about that, Michael? From Limerick. And Michael is currently working in Dublin, helping his friends band Crow Black Chicken
02:19tour Ireland and abroad.
02:21Brilliant stuff. Are they any good? Yeah, very good. They're in Texas. They just finished a tour in Texas.
02:26How do they go down? The Irish have got some great bands. Let me tell you.
02:31This is another one. This is another one, yeah? And what does your pal do in this band? He's the
02:38lead singer or something?
02:39I know there are three of them. It's a blues rock band. They just tour around. They played Glastonbury this
02:43year.
02:44Did they? These are serious people. Yeah, they did a multitude of festivals in Ireland and they did a tour
02:49of Texas at the start of August.
02:51Brilliant. Good for them. Let's have a big round of applause then for Michael, Michael Douglas and Alex Fish.
03:02And over to the corner, of course, Susie. Hi, Susie. How are you?
03:05Hi, Nick.
03:06And back with you, of course, again is Jodie Kidd, who was discovered on a beach, not like a piece
03:11of flocks, but as a young girl.
03:14And then a wonderful career as one of the world's most famous models.
03:19And then from there you've branched out in all sorts of other things.
03:22I certainly have. And here I am.
03:24Here you are. Yes. The apogee. Or is it the pinnacle? I can't remember.
03:29Anyway, brilliant stuff. But now is the time to get down to work, chaps.
03:34Now then, Alex, off you go.

14:09880.
14:10Um, you could have said 50 times 9 is 450.
14:14Minus 10 for 440.
14:17And times that by 2 for 880.
14:20Very good.
14:27Excellent stuff.
14:28So, the score's standing, 39 old, dead heat here.
14:32But now it's time to have a little chat with Jodie.
14:34And Jodie, at the beginning of the show we talked about the Mayflower earlier on and heading for Virginia.
14:38Because on this Who Do You Think You Are?
14:40It transpired that back in 1705, a relative, Edward Knott, was governor of Virginia.
14:46Yes, well, um, I did Who Do You Think You Are?
14:49Which was, um, I was very excited to do.
14:52So, uh, started my journey.
14:54And the first half of the show, which was, um, dreadful, actually.
15:00Because they all turned out to be cash for honours, food hoarders, murderers.
15:06It was kind of, like, completely dreadful.
15:08But then, um, we followed, uh, Lord Beaverbrook's side.
15:11And, uh, found out that we were one of the first settling families that went over in about 1630, round
15:18then.
15:19And that one of my great, great, great, great, great, great uncles was, um, a chap called Moses Hazen that
15:26was Brigadier General for Washington.
15:28And, and so it was a great, um, experience to learn so much about the American history.
15:35And, and it was, it was fantastic, actually.
15:37I really, really enjoyed it.
15:39So, um, so, yes, we were shortly after the Mayflower and the St. John.
15:44So, yes.
15:45It's a great little honour.
15:47I did it recently, and I thought, well, what can we find out about us?
15:51We were just boring Wiltshire farmers.
15:53Yeah.
15:53Excuse me.
15:54Right.
15:55And one of them turned out in 1705 to be the governor of Virginia, which is where the Mayflower was
16:02headed.
16:03Yeah.
16:03So we're all, we're all, we're all American.
16:06It was the most wonderful, flattering little excursion, that.
16:11Who do you think?
16:12Well, I was terribly flattered.
16:13Well, mine didn't start very good when they're all murderers.
16:16And what not.
16:17Um, but then ended up on a high.
16:19So I was, I was pleased that that happened.
16:21Yeah.
16:22Wonderful, wonderful thing.
16:23Anyway, there we are.
16:2439 all.

25:21now then 69 to 66 but now it's time for susie to feed us with your learning spoon well some
25:3013 years
25:30before the mayflower set sail after many failed attempts the adventurous spirit of the first
25:36english colonists took them finally to jamestown um and there's some wonderful writings by um
25:42william wood who was one of those early colonists and he documented all the different plants
25:46animals and the different things that he encountered and most of them were named in an
25:52algonquian language and algonquian was a vast number of native american indian languages such as cheyenne
25:58um for example or um uh blackfoot so wonderful wonderful american indian languages
26:05that um that already had names for these things but of course the colonists didn't
26:09so they took on these um these names and made them their own so skunk for example
26:14um was arrived at it comes from a um a term that meant um urinating small animals so that was
26:21what
26:21the american indians noticed this animal's habits um and we took on skunk or the the colonists did
26:27um and powwow is another one that they encountered there it meant he who dreams and it was um applied
26:33to any priest or healer um and one of the american pilgrim leaders on the mayflower and one of the
26:39first um to set short on the new land at that time described the role of the powwow as to
26:45be
26:45exercised principally in calling upon the devil and curing diseases of the sick or wounded um but
26:51their magic was associated with wizardry um exorcisms and all types all sorts of um mysterious charms
26:58but 200 years on the first mention of the powwow as a meeting of powerful people such as the power
27:03of
27:03these original powwows and that idea emerged as the development of the idea of this magical ceremony
27:09so all those words were first encountered back in 1607 from the native american indian languages
27:14brilliant stuff so alex 69 to michael 66 well done alex and michael your letters game

29:20U.
29:22And another one.
29:24O.
29:25And a consonant.
29:28T.
29:29And a final consonant, please.
29:34And a final B.
29:37Turn down.
29:39It's for you.
29:40It's for you.
30:08Yes, Alex.
30:10Just a five.
30:11What about Michael?
30:14Uh, just a four.
30:16And that four would be?
30:18Uh, tone, again.
30:19What about you, Alex?
30:21Quote.
30:22Quote.
30:23Using the QU.
30:24Yes, it's easy.
30:25Yeah.
30:25And in the corner, what have we got there?
30:27Susie and Jodie.
30:28We got a six.
30:30Yes.
30:30Bounty.
30:31Pretty good.
30:32Bounty.
30:34Very good indeed.
30:3581 plays 73.
30:36Michael slipped there slightly.
30:38And we've got to that stage now.
30:41Near the end, chaps.
30:42Michael, your numbers game.
30:44Two large and four small pieces, Rachel.
30:46Thank you, Michael.
30:47Two from the top row.
30:48And four little ones for the last all-important numbers game.
30:51And for this round, the selection is three, ten, two, nine.
30:57And the last number, 75 and 25.
31:00And your target?
31:01Three hundred and ninety-nine.
31:03Three-nine-nine.
31:05Three-nine-nine.
31:35Michael?
31:37Just 400.
31:38Not written down.
31:40One away.
31:40What about Alex?
31:41400.
31:42400.
31:43So, Michael?
31:46What did I do?
31:4775 plus 25.
31:4975 plus 25 is 100.
31:5210 divided by 2 is 5.
31:53Yeah.
31:549 minus 5 is 4.
31:56It is.
31:57Multiply that.
31:58One away.
31:58400.
32:00Yes, Alex?
32:01For the 4, I did 10 minus 9 is 1.
32:05Another 3.
32:05Yeah, great.
32:07Okay.
32:08Nonetheless, they're short.
32:10399.
32:11Is that a tricky one?
32:12You could have got there.
32:13If you said 2 plus 3 is 5.
32:16Times by 75 is 375.
32:20Add the 25 for your 400.
32:22And then 10 minus 9 is the one to take away.
32:25That's the way it's done.
32:26Brilliant.
32:28Very good, Rachel.
32:31Very good.
32:32So, 88 plays Michael's 80 as we go into the final round.
32:37Alex and Michael, fingers on buzzers, please, because now we're revealing today's countdown conundrum.
32:48Michael?
32:51No.
32:53Oh, wait.
32:54Back to you, Alex.
32:58Alex?
32:59Recognize.
33:01Recognize.
33:01Let's see whether you're right.
33:04Well done.
33:07Well done.
33:09Well done, Alex.
33:10Just short of your 100.
33:12Nevertheless, 98 is a cracking score.
33:14And well done, Michael, because so is 80.
33:17But we're propelling you back to Dublin.
33:20Yeah?
33:20Yeah.
33:20Back to helping out with your mate and his crow black chicken band.
33:25When you say helping out, what are you doing?
33:28Sell their merchandise.
33:30Try and get them gigs.
33:31Go to all their events and pretty much help them.
33:34Well, good luck to them anyway.
33:35Take your goodie bag.
33:37And you can, you know, before the gigs, you can run through some dictionary questions with them or whatever they
33:43like.
33:44Will do.
33:44Brilliant stuff.
33:45My love to Limerick.
33:46Now then, young man, we shall see tomorrow another good win.
33:50And tomorrow we shall see the wonderful dictionary corner pair, Jody and Susie.
33:55Look forward to it.
33:56Look forward to it.
33:57More stories from Jody.
33:58Excellent stuff.
33:59And Rachel, I think our accountant from London, young Alex Fish, has got potential on the sums, hasn't he?
34:06Yes, doing really well.
34:07Very good indeed.
34:08Potential in all areas.
34:09Yeah.
34:09I think we've got a contender here.
34:11Mind you, we said that the other day.
34:13And Natalie was winning, winning, winning.
34:16And suddenly, Alex came in and sank her.
34:19How could you?
34:20Anyway, there we are.
34:21See you tomorrow.
34:22I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
34:23Same time, same place.
34:25Hold on tight.
34:26You'll be sure of it.
34:27Good afternoon.
34:39A roast side of salmon and a great use of the leftovers.
34:43Jamie's money-saving meals is tonight on 4 at 8 o'clock.
