00:38And apparently, I'll read this, that only 9% of 15-year-olds in the UK are at ease speaking
00:44a foreign language.
00:46Whereas, right across the EU, in 14 countries surveyed, the figure was 42%.
00:53And in Malta, strangely, and at Sweden, I can understand this, 82% learn a foreign language.
01:00And I was in Malmo not that long ago in a restaurant, sitting there quietly in minding my own business.
01:05A family was sitting there speaking the most accentless English.
01:10And that's what they do in Sweden.
01:12It was a Swedish family and they were perfect.

01:19My French is passable, but not elegant.

01:28I went to Prague recently and met some Estonians and one of them spoke 13 languages fluently.

14:05the top of the show about foreign languages and so forth you were ploughing to and fro across Europe with
14:10your programme yeah last year you must run into however many languages well I don't speak very many languages um
14:17but I certainly do a lot of travel I do try but I'm not gifted in that department but um
14:22last year I think I did something like 20 flights in nine weeks
14:25really yeah all over Europe um which was fantastic I was filming a new show called escape to the continent
14:32so it's finding people property but also helping them with a new way of life abroad and sort of trying
14:37to be quite realistic what it's like I mean if you have property abroad if you're lucky enough it is
14:42very different people often want to move just for the sun there's a lot more to it than that
14:46absolutely wonderful and you get to see these remarkable places and cities and I don't know if you've been ladies
14:52but I went to Dubrovnik for the first time ever
14:54medieval walled city in Croatia just beautiful and literally as soon as I arrived I was working and I was
15:02like I'm coming back as soon as I can I have to come back as a tourist and really see
15:06it properly
15:06it is extraordinary that that that big square it's almost like polished marble wonderful extraordinary and it was bombed bombed
15:15well you wouldn't think so though to walk around I mean the way it's been repaired it is beautiful
15:20and the couple that I was showing Dubrovnik they wanted to move there her parents were Croatian and we actually
15:25showed them a flat just off that square really yes yeah they were really taken with it they didn't buy
15:31but uh beautiful
15:32and a great coastline that Croatian coastline yes the Dalmatian coastline wonderful we sound like we're from the tourist board

15:40no I was there just before the last pope died and he was about to visit it and the place
15:45was decked out in the papal flags and so forth it was a fantastic place
15:48and of course the Roman emperors had their villas up the coast it's split I think yeah uh yeah extraordinary

24:43little bit about the language of the sexes in english because as you would expect over the last millennium
24:49and a half the word the different words for men and women are quite revealing of the way that we
24:53have viewed the sexes and you'll find for example that almost all of the words associated with the
24:58latin word via v-i-r meaning man are flattering so virtues was the word used by the Romans for
25:06strength
25:06courage excellence everything that was considered manly all the characteristics of virility and to be
25:14virtuous is to have all the traits of a man um and then if you apply all of these manly
25:19qualities to
25:19the fine arts you would be a virtuoso so again they've got that v-i-r at the beginning and
25:24that
25:24always means something manly and therefore good but if you're a woman in old english you'd be described
25:29merely as a whiff man or a wife man so w-i-f-m-a-n and a whiff or
25:34a wife meant a woman but she needed the
25:36man bit added on at the end to be considered a proper human being and many of the more neutral
25:42words for a woman have become downgraded so if you take the word hussy hussy used to actually mean just
25:48a housewife it comes from who's with the wife of the house or the woman of the house because that
25:53took on soon all the associations of immoral behavior and even dame and madam have sort of lost
26:00their slightly positive associations you can call somebody a right madam or you can refer to them being
26:05madam of a house of ill repute if you like um dame actually comes from the latin domina or mistress
26:11and there's another word with quite devious connotations um so lots and lots of examples
26:16throughout history of how very very neutral words for women have suddenly become uh not so nice whereas
26:21the ones um all to do with men the v-i-r words the virility and virtuous and all of
26:26those um have
26:27stayed fairly positive and children were once affectionately referred to as wenches and tarts so
26:32they were both very neutral affectionate terms as well and a courtesan was once a highly favored
26:37female at court so you can see how these words have changed over time and i'll touch on some more
