Colorado Rockies rookie Cole Carrigg found himself at the center of attention after an emotional mistake during Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

With Colorado leading 1-0, Carrigg attempted a diving catch on Michael Harris II’s fly ball but couldn't make the play. The ball turned into a two-run double, putting Atlanta ahead. As Braves fans reacted from the stands, Carrigg responded by making an offensive hand gesture toward them.

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer immediately condemned the incident.

“Cole made a mistake, and he knows that is an embarrassment to the organization and that we don't stand for that,” Schaeffer said. “Listen, everybody makes mistakes. It is just one that he has to learn from. It is just that we will not put up with that here.”

Carrigg accepted responsibility afterward.

“First, I apologize to my teammates and the organization, that's not how I want to represent us,” he said. “That's inexcusable on my part.”

He added, “Braves fans are pretty passionate themselves. Kudos to them. But that gesture can't happen.”

Carrigg was removed from the next day's starting lineup but later entered as a pinch hitter. The incident became a clear reminder that emotions can have consequences, even in professional sports.
