Tigers legend Justin Verlander leaves mound in tears

Justin Verlander’s final career start at Comerica Park turned into an unforgettable family moment as the Tigers honored one of baseball’s greatest pitchers.

After throwing 5⅓ innings and allowing two runs in Detroit’s 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, manager A.J. Hinch made the emotional decision to have Verlander’s daughter, Genevieve, come onto the field to replace him.

The young girl ran toward the mound and wrapped her arms around her father. Verlander held her tightly for more than 15 seconds as the emotion became overwhelming and tears rolled down his face.

He later hugged his wife, Kate Upton, who was holding their second child, before sharing one final embrace with his teammates. Verlander then walked off the mound hand-in-hand with Genevieve as the Detroit crowd gave him a standing ovation.

The 42-year-old finishes an extraordinary career featuring three Cy Young Awards, an MVP, 10 All-Star selections and two World Series titles.

His next destination could be Cooperstown.
