Christa Pike, a Tennessee death row inmate, has unexpectedly regained consciousness nearly a week after a failed execution attempt left her on life support.

Pike’s attorneys had believed she was “brain dead” and expected that life support would eventually be withdrawn. But according to her lawyer Randy Spivey, she unexpectedly woke up and began speaking.

Spivey told reporters, “To the shock of everyone, including me, including her team and including the medical team, Christa woke up and began talking.”

He added, “I do not have an explanation for what happened between Monday night and Tuesday morning, but what we do know is that Christa has a long road to recovery.”

According to Spivey, Pike’s first words after regaining consciousness were “Where am I?” and “Who are you?” She reportedly remains confused and faces significant medical challenges, including pneumonia, difficulty swallowing and a blood clot in one arm.

Spivey also described her swollen hands, saying they looked “like if you were to blow up a surgical glove.” He said it remains uncertain whether she will regain full use of her arms.

Meanwhile, Tennessee officials are preserving evidence from the failed execution as the state investigates what went wrong. Governor Bill Lee has halted executions in Tennessee for the remainder of 2026.

00:04Our understanding was the first thing she said was, where am I and who are you?
00:11There's still a lot of cognitive confusion, and so I will say that.
00:16She has wanted to know what's happened, and she's asked about several people.
00:22She's asked about her team.
00:23She's asked about the victim's family.
00:27I think she is angry and confused about everything right now.
