00:00you head out of the wise heart right we make it right call kyle wright hotline and welcome on
00:03of cleveland.com of 92.3 the fan lance risland joining us right now lance welcome to the show
00:09what's going on guys oh you know same old same old i will ask you first for your reaction to
00:18deshaun watson being named starter by the cleveland browns i'm okay with it and i know uh it's not a
00:24very uh well that was that was lance risland there it was a great hit now go ahead buddy sorry
00:28well
00:29here's what i'm going to say is that you know you can't go for me i i side on the
00:34uh side of coaches
00:35and him being named starter and people saying well this is the owner's um decision i don't believe
00:41that now i'm not saying it's not true but i don't believe that and if you're a coach and you
00:45go in
00:45and you say i'm uh the owner or gm says i'm not able to make that call then he's not
00:51going to be
00:51around anyway and you're not going to have a successful program so i think of it this way
00:55is that munkin uh made the decision and whether i like the decision or not i like the fact that
01:00he
01:00made it if he did now it doesn't mean you have to like it it means he made it and
01:04i'm always okay
01:05with football guys making football decisions because in the end it's munkin's you know what on the line
01:09so um you know the idea that um you know i've heard people say limit you know uh lance you
01:16don't
01:16know what you're talking about with operation you don't know you know this offense is different than
01:20anything he's got either of these guys have run and i'm not defending either of them and i really
01:24don't care who the quarterback is uh but if munkin made the only thing i care about is that munkin
01:28made the decision and if he did then i'm going to let it happen because he's been doing it a
01:33long
01:33time and i'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt all right then explain this for me uh
01:37because i'm not a head coach and i don't know yeah if if mental toughness is his number one
01:42quarterback trade that's what munkin has said is his number one quarterback trade mental toughness
01:46how is it when you display a lack of mental toughness that then in the post game you can
01:51just say well i don't i'm not going to count that and i'm not going to count any of the
01:54post game
01:54press conferences and the comments that he made or anything that would give you any sort of belief
02:00that the mental toughness isn't there that feels very pick and choosy uh in a way that i just don't
02:05appreciate or really think makes sense well you know and uh teach his own there i would say this the
02:11the post game the post game comments to me uh that's just poor decision making i you know for
02:17me mental toughness is getting uh not setting the right pass protection somebody drills you
02:23and you got up got to get up and make the next play mental toughness is you're down uh things
02:28not
02:28obviously not everything that he does but the post game stuff to me uh i feel the same way as
02:33munkin
02:33i i i really think that's that's an easy out for everybody uh it's not it's not doesn't look great
02:38and i understand all that but in terms of play uh if he wants to change the narrative i like
02:43what
02:43munkin said go win go play better everything that everybody said about him for the you know he hasn't
02:48done it in this long that's all true that also doesn't mean anything to munkin mean moving forward
02:52and as coaches we don't look for failure we don't assume injury we're trying to do everything we can
02:59to win week one and i'm not saying i my decision uh if i made the decision i'm not there
03:05enough only
03:06thing we're seeing is we're seeing a couple throws and we're seeing we don't know the whole thing that
03:11goes into it and there's a lot more that goes into it that we have we're not privy to and
03:16i'm going
03:16to give the coach the benefit of the doubt now if it doesn't work out it's also the coach's fault
03:21and that's what ends up happening so um yeah i would say the mental toughness uh in regards to
03:26the post game stuff that's just emotional stuff that it just doesn't it's not a good look in my opinion
03:31but for me that's not mental toughness i think my problem listen i'm a trust in todd man coach
03:36all right nobody loves to trust in todd more than nick wilson when people think of trusting in todd
03:42they think of nick wilson but here's the thing um i have been burned time and time and time and
03:50time
03:50again by deshaun and by the browns because the machinations never add up because their process
03:58always leads to flawed results and because quite frankly i don't know of another team that would
04:03that would force deshaun watson on his fans after four years of failure and suck the way the the way
04:10the browns are right now and so i i think like i i like todd munkin as much as the
04:16next person i think
04:16we were the quickest to flip to hey i actually think this guy is anti-stefanski and that's a good
04:22thing
04:23at the same point i that's not an infinite amount of trust like i do have to have some of
04:27my own
04:28ability to say why in the hell are you doing this and who in the hell think this makes sense
04:33oh yeah i agree with that uh here's here's my thought on it though is that he hasn't they haven't
04:38done anything yet you know he played i thought shador had a great half of football um they didn't
04:44show very much they didn't do very much on defense still played great his footwork was great his
04:48composure was great i thought deshaun played terrible but once again i never get too high
04:52too low and we don't know the whole body of work now i think shador has played more consistent
04:57in camp from what i've seen but we don't see everything and once again i'm going to the idea of
05:04what he's done the last four years he had we have not seen anything he's done with todd munkin as
05:09his
05:09coach and the same argument i'm having right now i promise you you guys know me very well i would
05:16have the same argument if they named shador the starter it's the idea of trusting the guy who's
05:21making the decisions and if he's making the decisions and it all rolls downhill on him
05:25then i'm okay with that if somebody else makes the decisions and that you know and i'm going to
05:30get on todd a little bit if he went in and said i'm making the decisions and they said well
05:34if we
05:34want you to hire if we're going to hire you you're going to play deshaun watson then that's todd's fault
05:39for taking the job because that's not how coaching works and so everything that's happened in the past
05:44means absolutely nothing now the most the likelihood of him playing at a high level is very
05:49little the likelihood of him not getting hurt is very little but we don't look at that as coaches
05:54saying we anticipate him playing poorly we anticipate him getting hurt no you just go with
05:58what you think it's not always right but as long as todd made that decision i'm going to live with
06:03it
06:03just because i want to see uh he's earned that he's now the head coach there's only 32 of them
06:07i'm going to give him a chance i've liked what i saw and how they practiced and because he named
06:14the guy that maybe people don't think should have been the starter now it's the owner's decision i
06:19just don't believe that i don't believe in conspiracy theories i just think right now he's trying to win
06:24week one and for whatever reason he thinks deshaun's the guy deshaun might go out and absolutely play
06:29terrible great then you move on but i don't think there's anything more than that he just thinks right
06:34now and that could be hey we got to get in the right run game maybe he gives us a
06:37better chance
06:38of playing complimentary football i know that sounds boring but that's how us coaches think
06:41we got to figure out ways to win if it's 2-0 or 40-0 it doesn't matter and and
06:45that's just that's
06:46what i think i don't i don't the past doesn't mean anything moving forward to a guy who's never seen
06:51what he's done i want to stay with the idea that coaches just throw out the post-game press
06:55conferences and act as if none of that matters like when watson was asked essentially whether he could
07:00get past slash defeat the negativity that answer was very poor that answer in himself
07:04saying i don't know i don't know it's a mental battle every day how does munkin not look into
07:09that at all he said your quarterback is at the podium telling the media that mentally this is a
07:13problem for him mentally he doesn't know if he can do it mentally it's a struggle for him
07:17and as coaches you're suggesting he just throws that aside and doesn't worry about that and i i just
07:21if that's true and i believe you why would you lie about that to me but if that's true then
07:25i feel
07:26like you guys as coaches could do a lot more work and being better with your players and the
07:29understanding around the players because that is that's a red flag to me coach
07:33well here's the thing though i would say this about me and you and everybody else we're not
07:37in that building we don't have the relationship with those guys we don't have the daily grind every
07:43day i get up and teach you guys go to the radio this is what they got this is what
07:46these guys do
07:47for a living and so we you're right we don't know but for in that case i don't know the
07:53whole scenario
07:53now if it was a guy um that has had a bunch of issues with other things whatever those may
08:00be
08:00for some reason they don't see it as a big deal now does it affect his play that would be
08:05my concern
08:05moving forward him coming out with this is this off his chest now and he's going to play a little
08:10bit lighter or is it really a thing well that comes out in his play and the bottom line is
08:15if he doesn't
08:15play well right then he doesn't get to play anymore and that's okay but i'm not going in with the
08:21idea
08:22that i know he's going to play poorly he gets two games and then we'll move on that's just not
08:26the
08:26mentality i have and i really hope that's the mentality todd munkin has because that to me is
08:31the browns are going to browns i just don't believe in that and i hope they they do as well
08:36and it's it's a bad look but i don't think it's anything to do with mental toughness it's a poor
08:40decision when you're emotional that's what that is to me which is a string of what we've seen with
08:44deshaun over the years anyway though he makes all sorts of poor decisions during games when he's
08:47emotional we saw that on saturday he got emotional the crowd booed and he made a bad play after bad
08:52play
08:52after bad play i don't i don't know how the connection isn't there for a coach well i mean
08:57once again though it's just the idea that he you know there was a practice that you know people saw
09:01that they said he was unplayable i've been to every practice i never saw a practice he was unplayable
09:05i saw a practice that he made a bunch of bad throws um but i also made i saw a
09:09practice where he got
09:10people into the right stuff same thing i'm saying for uh shador and it's it's interesting for me because i
09:15would be having the same kind of conversation with shador because really it all comes back to
09:19if munkin made a decision i'm good with it and that's where i'm at and uh i just don't believe
09:26you know it's it's everybody's that confirmation bias if you go to a practice and you watch a two
09:30hour practice and they throw 67 balls and you decide that you're going to uh be mad at the seven
09:36terrible throws he had then that fits you that's going to fit your narrative and i think that's a
09:40lot with both of these guys i think these guys have done a great job of growing and getting better
09:44throughout camp and that's where i'm at i you know the whole process i try to grade the whole
09:49practice i like what they've done both of them the idea that they play terrible or they can't do
09:55things or shador's not smart and i just haven't seen that like others and everybody's entitled to
10:00their own opinion and i value everybody's opinion and i don't you know i don't say my opinion is right
10:04at all that's just how i see it i see munkin's going to play the guy who gives him the
10:09chance to win
10:10in jacksonville and right now i think that's just sean it might not be that way for week two but
10:15i
10:15don't think there's an agenda where we're going to let him play for two and uh then we'll we'll see
10:20what happens and i just don't i don't i don't believe coaches think like that whatsoever i could
10:25be wrong but uh you know in my experience of 45 years of being with coaches that's just not i
10:31don't
10:31think that's how they think lance we appreciate your time today uh we'll catch up with you next week
10:36buddy appreciate you thanks coach absolutely boys we'll see you lance risland there cleveland.com
