00:00The person can be a believer, can sing in the choir, can be a singer, can be a missionary,
00:08can handle pamphlets, but if he's not a tither and giver, when he dies, he'll go to hell.
00:15Hello everyone, how are you? I'm Pastor Antonio Junior, and in today's video, I want to talk to you
00:20about a topic that always generates a lot of controversy, which is tithing. I wrote down here
00:26the main questions that everyone has about tithing, and I'm going to answer them in this video.
00:31These are questions like, is tithing mandatory? Do I have to give all my tithes to my church?
00:36Or can I help charities myself, for example? If I don't tithe, will I be cursed? Will the locust destroy
00:43everything I have?
00:45Where does he talk about tithing in the New Testament? What did Jesus say about tithing?
00:51So it's worth staying with me until the end, especially so you can help other people who
00:55have questions about this topic. Okay? But before we start, I want to ask you to subscribe to my channel.

01:06It's very important for you to activate this bell and select the all option, so you receive all notifications
01:12whenever I post a new message here on the channel. Okay? Brothers, let's go!
01:18One time I was at church and you won't believe what I heard from the pastor. The pastor said that
01:22whoever
01:23didn't give the tithe wouldn't go to heaven. And how did he support this idea? He quoted a passage
01:29from the book of Malachi that says the people of Israel were robbing God because they weren't tithing.
01:36And then he combined it with another passage from the New Testament that says, thieves will not inherit
01:41the kingdom of God. So he said that if you don't tithe, you are stealing and thieves will not inherit
01:47the
01:48kingdom of God. But that's heresy because he took two passages out of their original context and brought
01:54them into the present day. For sure a lot of people got scared and because they don't know the scriptures,
02:01because they don't know the word of God, people perish, people suffer. So brothers, we need to be
02:07very careful because there are a lot of wolves in sheep's clothing, there are a lot of people deceiving
02:11others. And there's another case too of a sister who told me that her mother was very sick and she
02:18urgently needed to take medicine, but the money the daughter had was set aside for the tithe. So she told
02:25her mother that she couldn't use that money, because it was money consecrated to the Lord. And unfortunately
02:31her mother became very ill. Thank God she was killed in time, because she went a long time without
02:36taking that medicine and she couldn't go without it. So brothers, do you realize how people have
02:41difficulty dealing with this subject? There are many doubts, brothers. I've also heard of a case
02:47with a pastor who said that if someone didn't give the tithe, they didn't even need to come back to
02:51church. First they had to get that money and only then could they attend that church. And the one who
02:57told me this was my grandmother. My grandmother used to go to a Pentecostal church, a very well known
03:02church throughout Brazil. And she was very sad because she couldn't manage to gather that money.
03:07Brothers, I was very sad about that situation. And because of that, I felt like recording this video
03:12for you. And I know that the issue of tithing is a very delicate matter, because it deals with the
03:19sin of greed, whether from greedy people who teach wrong things to make money off the church members,
03:26or from greedy people who keep looking for excuses not to contribute anything to the church and not feel
03:32guilty about it. So this video is for all of us and I'm going to start explaining now. The word
03:38tithe
03:39started back in Genesis chapter 14 verses 18 to 20. The word tithe started from a battle and he brought
03:48a
03:48lot of riches with him. Then he met with the king and priest Melchizedek, who blessed Abraham,
03:55and then Abraham felt the desire to give the tithe of everything he had gained in the battle.
04:01This practice was certainly very common in Abraham's time. And that's why Moses, who was the one who
04:07wrote the book of Genesis, doesn't give much explanation about where Abraham got this idea from,
04:13since Melchizedek didn't even ask him for it. And after that we will see the tithes appear in Jacob's time.
04:20The Bible says that Jacob was running away from his brother after deceiving him. He then had a vision
04:26of God, of the angels of heaven coming down here to earth. And then he made a promise to the
04:32Lord,
04:33that if God blessed him, blessed his journey and made him prosper, Jacob would give the tithe of
04:39everything he earned. If you read this passage, you will realize that Jacob didn't do this because it
04:46was a law, but because he understood that tithing was a principle that pleased the Lord.
04:52And tithing would only appear 500 years after these events, through the law that was created for the
04:58people of Israel. And look how interesting, at that time there was no money and that's why the
05:04Israelites had to give 10% of their crops and the animals they raised to the tabernacle,
05:10as it is written in Leviticus chapter 27 verse 30. This tithe was used to take care of the Levites,
05:18who were fully dedicated to the work in the temple. Later you can read at home, Numbers chapter 18 verse
05:2520.
05:26And besides this tithe, the Israelites still had to give a tithe to finance a feast,
05:31a celebration in honor of God. See what is written in Deuteronomy chapter 14.
05:36Set aside a tithe of everything the land produces annually. Eat the tithe of the grain, the new wine
05:43and the oil, and the firstborn of all your herds in the presence of the Lord your God, in the
05:49place
05:50he chooses as a dwelling for his name, so that you may learn to always fear the Lord your God.
05:57And there was also the tithe they had to give every three years, to take care of the poor Levites,
06:02the widows, the orphans and the refugees. This is found in Deuteronomy chapter 14 verses 28 and 29,
06:10which says the following. At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's
06:16harvest and store them in your own town, so that the Levites, who have no property or inheritance,
06:24and the foreigners, the orphans and the widows, who live in your town, may come and eat and be satisfied,
06:30and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
06:34So, look how interesting this is brothers, if you add all this up. You'll see that the Israelites had to
06:41give a tithe that was around 23.33% of everything they received.
06:48That's why the tithe in the Old Testament worked as a method of taxation to meet people's needs and not
06:55just as a religious rule. And it's always in this context brothers that the tithe appears in the Bible,
07:02from the law onward. It's as if it were a tax, a tribute that the people of Israel had to
07:07pay.
07:08And that's why that passage from the Old Testament, from the book of Malachi,
07:11says that the people of Israel were robbing the Lord because they were not tithing. It's because the
07:18Israelites had the obligation to provide for the needs of the Levites and priests who took care of
07:23the temple. So, when they didn't give the tithe, they were paralyzing God's work, since if they didn't
07:31do this job, no one else could do it. So brothers, the temple would come to a complete halt. The
07:37things of
07:38God were abandoned and the people also stopped receiving instruction from these men on how to
07:43live a life with God. And consequently, they went back to their life of sin and they reaped the curses.
07:50Things didn't work out. And God himself says that they planted, but it seemed like they didn't see
07:56the harvest. They gathered money, but it seemed like they were putting it into a bag with holes.
08:02So, in this book of Malachi, chapter 3, verse 8, which is used a lot, right, by many pastors,
08:08to put fear in people. Regarding the tithe, it's talking about that context and not about our reality,
08:15the present day, since we don't even have institutions like we did in the past. And it's in this context
08:20that Jesus also talks about the tithe, in the only passage in the New Testament about this practice.
08:25See what he said to the religious people of his time.
08:29Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, hypocrites! You give a tithe of mint, of dill and cumin,
08:37but you have neglected the more important matters of the law, justice, mercy and faithfulness.
08:44You should practice these things without neglecting the others.
08:48Look at these brothers. For many people, this passage is clear proof that everyone has to give the tithe,
08:55since Jesus is speaking in the New Testament. But we need to understand something very important
09:00that few people know. When Christ said that those men should obey the law, it's because Jesus was Jewish.
09:08Jesus was born under the law of Moses, as it is written in Galatians, chapter 4, verse 4.
09:14And that's why Jesus lived according to the law. But pay attention to what he said in Matthew,
09:19chapter 5, verses 17 and 18. Pay attention.
09:23Do not think that I came to abolish the law or the prophets. I did not come to abolish, but
09:28to fulfill.
09:29I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a
09:36pen,
09:36will by any means disappear from the law until everything is accomplished.
09:40So brothers, Jesus made it clear that the law should be fulfilled even during his ministry.
09:45Because if he broke the law, then he would be a sinner, like me, like you, like anyone. And so,
09:52he would not fulfill his mission here on earth, which was to free man from sin.
09:57And indeed the Bible says that Jesus fulfilled the whole law. The devil wanted Jesus to break the law
10:03at just one point, and then he would be a sinner like any of us. But Jesus, he was the
10:09only person
10:09who managed to fulfill the whole law. He was circumcised. On the eighth day, he was presented
10:15in the synagogue. He began his priestly ministry at the age of 30. And he did everything the law
10:21commanded. And you should remember that passage where Jesus healed the 10 lepers.
10:27The Bible says that only one of them came back to give thanks. And when this man returned and
10:32worshipped the Lord for this miracle, Jesus told him to present himself to the priest and bring an
10:38offering that Moses commanded in Leviticus. 14. And today, when someone receives a healing,
10:45do they have to present themselves to the priest and offer him an offering out of gratitude for this
10:51miracle? Of course not. That's why my brothers, it's very important for us to understand that the new
10:57covenant didn't begin at the birth of Jesus, but at his death. I'm going to leave some passages here
11:03for you to see that this is true. The new covenant only began after Jesus died and rose again. And
11:10so
11:10Jesus, he gave up his spirit. The veil was torn, and then a new phase in human history began, ending
11:18there all the ordinances of Moses, and introducing the gospel of salvation through the resurrection
11:23of Christ. Amen. So my brothers, up to this point, I have already answered some questions. You will not
11:31be cursed if you don't give your tithe, and you are also not obligated to give the tithe as if
11:36it were a
11:36tax. To help with the tabernacle or the temple, because that is no longer part of church life. First,
11:43because if it were like that, you wouldn't have to give only 10%, but you would have to give an
11:47average of about 23% of your income. And I believe that would be too much for a lot of
11:53people. And
11:54that was to help that system that worked in the Old Testament and is no longer our reality today.
12:00But stay with me until the end, because I'm going to clarify a few more very important things,
12:06and I'll give you my opinion. I'll show you how I handle this subject. If you read the New Testament,
12:12you'll see that after the resurrection of Jesus, there was no command, no verse, saying that you
12:18have to give the tithe, which represents 10%, but rather, that you should contribute as you have
12:23determined. In your heart, this is written in 2 Corinthians, chapter 9. I want to read to you,
12:29what the Apostle Paul said.
12:41Look at this, brothers. The Apostles understood that in the New Covenant, Christians should live
12:47by generosity, not by obligation as if it were a tax. Just like Abraham, when he gave the tithe to
12:54Melchizedek, he didn't do it because of a law or an imposition, but as a way to honor and thank
13:00the
13:00Lord. God loves those who give with joy, and not those who do it out of obligation or fear of
13:06being
13:06cursed. So, a true Christian should be known for his love, for his generosity, for his faith, for his
13:14obedience, because he recognizes that God is his provider. And with that, he has the desire to help
13:21God's work, to see the Kingdom of God advancing, reaching more people through evangelism and social
13:27outreach. And in the church of Corinth, for example, the Apostle Paul said that Christians should set
13:34aside a part of their earnings to help the church. See what is written in 1 Corinthians, chapter 16.
13:41Regarding the collection for God's people, do as I instructed the churches of Galatia. On the first
13:47day of the week, each of you should set aside the sum of money, in keeping with your income,
13:52saving it up, so that no collections will have to be made when I come. Look at these brothers,
13:58and pay close attention to what he said, in keeping with your income. Many people ask,
14:03if the Bible talks about 10% in the New Testament, but as I said, the church doesn't say anything
14:09about
14:09that. The church simply incorporated the 10% from the Old Testament and set it as the recommended
14:15minimum for Christians to give. I myself, brothers, was very blessed when I started giving the tithe,
14:23as a way to thank God for providing for my needs. It was a decision I made together with my
14:29wife,
14:29and I feel very good about it. I know that many people might criticize, but I praise God for the
14:36opportunity, for the privilege of being able to help God's work with my 10%.
14:43And I also see this as a way to discipline myself, because during a time in my life,
14:48I made the decision not to set a value, a percentage. But I realized, brothers,
14:54that I ended up not helping much, partly because I kept waiting for some opportunity to come up,
14:59someone who needed help. It was a time when I was living abroad and I wasn't attending a church,
15:05so I realized that wasn't good for me. And when I went back to giving the tithe, I felt really
15:11good.
15:11And to this day, I am very grateful to God for being able to help, to contribute to God's walk.
15:17Brothers, we need to be very careful with the sin of greed. We can't be selfish and we can never
15:23stop
15:24contributing. And as Paul teaches, Christians shouldn't feel obligated to always give 10%,
15:30but rather according to their income. Sometimes it means giving more than a tenth, sometimes it means
15:37giving less if you can't afford it. So each person has to pray, has to ask God for wisdom,
15:44to contribute in the best way and without that fear of being cursed, of reaping a curse, of the devourer,
15:51coming to your house and stealing everything you have. So we need to understand that this is a law from
15:57the Old Testament. And unfortunately brothers, I know that many people don't help. You can see it
16:03in your own church, here in my church too, and this really hinders the growth, the advancement of God's
16:09kingdom, especially because everything needs money nowadays. Isn't that true? Even the Apostle Paul,
16:16he asked for offerings, he asked people to help, because he knew that without money it gets much harder, right?
16:23And once he received help from the Church of Philippi and he praised those people, I want to read to
16:29you what is written in Philippians chapter 4. As you know, Philippians, in the early days of the Gospel,
16:37when I left Macedonia, no church shared with me. When it comes to giving and receiving, except for you,
16:44because when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me help, not just once, but twice, when I was in need.
16:51Not that I am looking for offerings, but what may be credited to your account. I have received
16:57everything and what I have is more than enough. I am amply supplied now that I have received from
17:04Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.
17:13My God will supply all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
17:21Look at these brothers, look what a blessing. Paul is very happy here, because he received the
17:25offerings from the brothers and he said that God would supply each of the needs of these people,
17:31because they pleased God. Of course, giving tithes and offerings is not a guarantee that you will never
17:37lack anything, ok? I need to say this, because there are a lot of people who come to me and
17:42say,
17:42Pastor, I give my tithe, I'm a faithful tithe, why are things so hard in my life? Why am I
17:49always
17:49struggling with money? So brothers, we need to understand that tithing is not a guarantee that
17:55things will go well in your finances, ok? We need to be good stewards of everything God gives us,
18:01we need to work for our livelihood, because money isn't just going to fall into your hands.
18:06So, we need to work, we need to do our part, ok? And now I'm going to answer some very
18:13common
18:13questions that people ask me. The other day a friend of mine asked me the following. Pastor,
18:18I didn't give my tithe last month. And now, do I have to give the tithe next month or this
18:25month,
18:25along with the tithe I missed? So, brothers, as I said, in the New Testament, giving is not a form
18:32of
18:32tax, but rather an act of love, an act of generosity. So, if last month for some reason you didn't
18:40contribute, you don't owe that to anyone. The important thing is not to lose the habit of giving,
18:45ok? For example, Paul, he didn't tell the brothers in the church that if they didn't give anything,
18:52they would owe him. No, he only praised those brothers when they helped him.
18:58And another question I hear a lot from people is this. Pastor, do I have to give everything to the
19:04church or can I distribute my tithe as I see feet? My brothers, in the New Testament it also doesn't
19:12mention a specific place where you have to give like it did in the Old Testament. What I think is
19:17that if you attend the church, you should help. Yes, you are enjoying that place, you are
19:22sitting in a chair that cost money, you are in a place that has water, that has electricity bills to
19:28pay.
19:29There are people involved in that work, so yes, you have to help your church.
19:34The church also has the pastor's salary who is dedicated to the work and many churches have several
19:39people. Working directly in the ministry. So, I am in favor of you helping your congregation.
19:47I know that maybe many people will say, Pastor, but in my church people don't help pastor.
19:54I've already analyzed it. People don't do charitable work. But could it be that people,
19:59or maybe the church isn't doing it because there aren't enough resources? Maybe there are few resources?
20:05So that's something for you to think about.
20:07Okay? And regarding setting aside part of your tithe to help institutions or people in need,
20:12I don't think there's anything wrong with that. What matters is the intention in your heart.
20:18Just as the Apostle Paul said, that each one should give as he has decided in his heart.
20:23Alright, okay? And another question people ask me is this. Pastor, do I have to give the tithe on gross
20:29income or net income? My brother, if you've watched up to this point, you saw that there is
20:34no set amount. You will decide in your heart how you want to contribute, based on your own circumstances,
20:41as you feel joy in participating in the work that God is doing.
20:46So, I advise you to first pay your employees and all the other company expenses,
20:51since the actual profit you'll see is much less than what you received in total.
20:57And if you tithe on the total amount, you might even go into debt. And there are people who,
21:03if they give 10, 15 or 20 percent of what they receive, they won't have financial problems.
21:08And let me tell you something. Unfortunately, most people who ask these questions about tithing,
21:15it's not because they want to give 10 percent, but because they want to give less. They want to save
21:21more money. And we also need to be careful with that, because God's work has to come first.
21:26We must prioritize the things of the Lord. We need to understand that when we are prioritizing God
21:33in all areas, that also affects our finances. Yes, we are pleasing God, because God sees the attitude
21:40of our heart. Amen. Unfortunately, people are always looking for a way to justify themselves,
21:47because they are not helping at all. And we have to remember that in the time of the disciples,
21:52in the first chapters of Acts, those people gave everything they had. Sometimes they would sell
21:58their properties. They were very generous, and no one there was worried about doing the math,
22:04because they felt a great desire to be part of something that was much bigger than what they had.
22:09And Jesus said that, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. So, my brother,
22:15if you value God's work and the people who work in it, you can be sure, you will be very
22:21happy,
22:22God will supply your needs, because God honors those who honor Him. So, brothers, we need to understand
22:30this. There is a law of generosity, and the Bible says that the generous will prosper. Whoever gives
22:36relief to others will receive relief. So, this is the principle I wanted to share with you here. We need
22:42to
22:43have joy. I believe this is the focus of the Gospel, to do everything wholeheartedly for God. Everything
22:49we do for people has to be as if it were for the Lord. Amen? Don't feel pressured. Don't let
22:56anyone force
22:57you to do anything either. If you chose to give, if you chose to contribute, let it be with all
23:03your heart.
23:04Just thank God, because God is giving you the means. And this, brothers, is a privilege. Amen?
23:12And just to wrap up something very important. All the members of the church have the right to know
23:17where these tithes are going. You! I know that most people say this. But I give the tithe and I
23:25don't want
23:25to know what is done with it. It's true, brothers. The church is more aware of the needs than the
23:30members are.
23:31Those who are in leadership really know what the greatest needs are. But you can ask for information,
23:36yes. Where is this tithe going? Okay? There needs to be transparency in the management of the church's
23:43finances. Because we are Christians and we should be honest in everything, especially in matters
23:49related to God. And besides that, when there is transparency, the members feel much more secure
23:55and they tend to help even more. Amen? And I want to give you one last piece of advice here.
24:00Set aside an amount
24:01every month. Always, when you receive any money, set aside an amount. Because this will help you become disciplined.
24:08If you keep waiting for someone in need to show up, you will end up missing out on helping a
24:13lot in God's work.
24:14Of course, the Lord God doesn't need money. But His work does. So make it a habit to contribute and
24:22you will be investing
24:23in something that will bear fruit for eternal life. Amen? I am Pastor Antonio Giorno. I hope you enjoyed it.
24:30I hope I have cleared up your doubts. And now I ask you to share it. Send it to as
24:36many people you know as possible.
24:37Because many people have doubts about this subject. And it's important for us to know what the Word of God
24:43says about this. Ok? God bless you and see you in the next video.
25:07God bless you.
