Storm damage reports are coming in from Virginia up through Pennsylvania and into Delaware after severe and tornado-warned storms throughout the evening of Aug. 20.
Transcript
00:00Bucks County, Lower Bucks, and all of Philadelphia County under a flash flood warning.
00:04There are two of them that cover Philadelphia, the city itself.
00:07Now as we head down into Delaware, I want to get into the tornado threat here.
00:11As we switch over to the Dover, Delaware radar site, merely miles, just not many miles,
00:17but seven to, well, here we are about 20 miles north.
00:20The Dover radar site is about 20 miles south of the city of Dover.
00:24We've had reports of a tornado here.
00:26A train spotter reported a rain-wrapped tornado at 618, 15 minutes ago, on the ground with flying debris.
00:32A moment or two later than that, a funnel cloud was spotted at the airport.
00:38Pulling the map out, I really, really expect with high confidence that some of these purple dots will be translated
00:45to red there in parts of Pennsylvania as well there,
00:48eastern New York into western Lancaster County, based on the video evidence of a tornado.
00:53So I see some new footage there of some storms there in parts of Pennsylvania.
00:59It's been nasty stuff out there.
01:00Also, sadly, one was killed due to lightning in Cape Charles, Virginia.
01:05That's in Northampton County.
01:06That was at 4.05 this afternoon.
01:08So a lot of breaking news tied to weather, unfortunately, with these strong storms.
01:13And this was a storm that may not have even been severe.
01:15Again, any lightning strike can be a very dangerous thing.
01:19Now, there were some strong storms in the area.
01:21Norfolk gusted to 55 miles per hour.
01:23Trees blocking the road there in Ben's Church.
01:25I wanted to show you some more of the reports there into areas of eastern New York County.
01:30In Hallam, large oak trees down.
01:32Columbia building damage.
01:34Collapsed shed.
01:35Shingles blown off roofs in Columbia as well.
01:37I'm going to scoot this a little farther east so we can see with more clarity.
01:41And also to the north.
01:43Now, keep in mind, some of the plots, they plot a little bit funny.
01:47They plot too high in altitude.
01:49So I think that they're not always perfectly placed.
01:52But beyond this, I wanted to show you one or two of the other reports.
01:57The descriptors were more important.
01:59Roof damage.
02:00Severe building damage and walls collapsed in Columbia.
02:02So that occurred down here in Columbia right along Route 30 on the east side of the Susquehanna River in
02:08western Lancaster County of PA.
02:10Into Millersville itself.
02:11Tree down blocking the road.
02:12I suspect the tornado lifted by that time.
02:14But there you can see some stormy scenes there of late.
02:18Also, we're dealing with flash flooding into Harrison, New Jersey.
02:21Water rescues in progress at 613.
02:22That was 21 minutes ago.
02:24Clifton, New Jersey.
02:25Flooding on New Jersey 3.
02:27Garden State Parkway.
02:28Two lanes out of three closed.
02:30Not a good time for the evening commute.
02:32That was a 550 there in Passaic County.
02:34All right, let's get down into some of the details on this ongoing tornado threat.
02:39Specifically, I suspect it has moved offshore now.
02:44The tornado warning does continue for eastern parts of Kent County.
02:49Take shelter.
02:51Just play it safe.
02:52But this is likely still producing a water spout here.
02:55So it is offshore now.
02:57If you're in downtown Dover, I think you can come out of your shelter.
02:59I really do.
03:00The storm is now producing a water spout 10 miles to the east over the Delaware Bay.
03:06I would be very concerned, though, in Cumberland County, New Jersey, near Fortescue, just south of Fortescue, approaching Maurice River.
03:13Get ready.
03:13You've got a water spout in progress over the Delaware Bay that's likely to move into this area.
03:18So I would treat this like a tornado warning in Fortescue and Maurice River.
03:22We're looking at south Jersey on the Delaware Bay.
03:25On the Delaware Bay.
03:26So we're looking at southern parts of Cumberland County, New Jersey.
03:29We had a, about a month ago, we had a tornado that, it was a water spout.
03:34It went from very close to the path of the Lewis-Cape May Ferry, and it came into southern Cape
03:39May County.
03:39This is very similar to that.
03:41It's just a little farther north, about 15, 20 miles farther north.
03:44I'm going to check myself on the, about 20 miles farther north-northwest up the coastline.
03:50As this is likely a water spout in progress, very, very likely to be a water spout, soon to come
03:57into the bay side of Cumberland County, New Jersey.
04:01Cumberland County doesn't have any coastal areas outside of the bay.
04:03So the southern part of Cumberland County, where the Delaware Bay meets to land there.
04:08So again, and again, you can see the weather service, they're playing it safe.
04:11They still issued a tornado warning for the back end of the coastline there.
04:14But this water spout is offshore now, and moving into the area near Maurice River.
04:20So you can come out of your shelter in Dover itself, but consider taking shelter into Cumberland County, New Jersey,
04:28near Maurice River, near and south of Fortescue, Dividing Creek.
04:32Some of you are going to be facing what may be a tornado as it crosses the bay, currently in
04:36progress as a water spout.
04:39Overall, before I zoom out there, something just caught my eye.
04:42I want to make sure we're not dealing with any other water spouts over the Delaware Bay.
04:46We just need to keep an eye out for some of these other showers a little farther south, east of
04:50Milford.
04:50For now, though, the main event is going to be a landfalling water spout near Maurice River and south of
04:57Fortescue, New Jersey, possibly as a tornado.
04:59All right, we do have some ongoing threats in other areas here farther south, into New Jersey, and down into
05:06areas like southern Delaware, as I mentioned.
05:08Also, Richmond, Virginia, you're under a severe thunderstorm warning right now in our yellow zone.
05:13So we'll keep an eye out for you in Richmond.
05:15Damaging wind and hail will be the main concerns.
05:17Flash flooding, a big concern in New York City.
05:20Flash flooding is your big deal there.
05:21And as we look at the moderate risk to lives and property, that's two out of four.
05:25Areas like Wilmington, we've seen that.
05:27Atlantic City is going to be up next here.
05:29With that risk and also the chance for a tornado, a water spout in progress across the Delaware Bay.
05:35Look out, Fortescue, New Jersey, down into Maurice River.
05:39We're facing a dangerous threat there soon.
05:41Raleigh and Fayetteville, northeastern parts of South Carolina, you're under a two out of four risk tomorrow.
05:46And look at these storms that will break out tomorrow from the same front as it pushes farther south.
05:50Damaging wind and flash flooding.
05:52That's a pretty nasty screenshot there, 3.30, 4 p.m.
05:55And then onward up into other areas around New Jersey as some of that unfurls into southern parts of Virginia,
06:01I should say.
06:02Southern parts of Virginia tomorrow.
06:03So for the northeast tomorrow, big split, I-80 north, delightful.
06:07Still some rain in southeast New England.
06:10Thunderstorms linger in Virginia and West Virginia.
06:12And then the weekend for the northeast, we've got some issues here with some cooler air.
06:16That'll be nice.
06:16But it'll be unsettled with rain off and on, even a thunderstorm or two.
06:21And this is water spout weather on the Great Lakes.
06:23Water's warm.
06:24Air is going to be chilly aloft.
06:26We can see some of them.
