Risk for severe storms in the Plains this Thursday

AccuWeather forecasters say high winds, hail and even tornadoes are possible as storms pound the Plains on Oct. 12.

00:00 We're gonna see a lot of different factors

00:01 and a variety of conditions here with this.

00:03 So AccuWeather's Rhea Mayday is joining us

00:05 from our Severe Weather Center in Wichita, Kansas.

00:08 Rhea, thanks so much for joining us.

00:11 - Thanks again for having me.

00:12 - Well, we always like talking to you

00:13 about severe weather threats here.

00:15 And Rhea, behind me here,

00:17 we have tonight's severe weather risk,

00:20 which is limited, but it is a concern.

00:22 We've seen a couple of warnings issued

00:23 for severe thunderstorms in parts of Iowa,

00:25 even out to the west, closer to the core of this storm

00:28 in Wyoming.

00:29 So what are we looking at tonight in eastern Nebraska

00:31 and western parts of Iowa?

00:33 - We're kind of looking at a multitude

00:36 of different threats right along that front there.

00:38 And one of the threats that we're looking at

00:40 is of course going to be the severe thunderstorm threat

00:42 with high winds.

00:43 And the other threat is going to be flooding.

00:46 So it looks like these storms are going to be kind of

00:47 moving over the same area overnight tonight.

00:50 And that's gonna be an area

00:51 that we're not only gonna be concerned

00:52 about severe thunderstorms producing high winds,

00:55 but also the threat for flooding.

00:57 - And as we move forward in time tomorrow,

01:00 we break out the orange colored pencils here

01:02 because we have a slightly greater threat.

01:04 So could you talk about what kind of hazards

01:06 we could expect tomorrow and tomorrow night?

01:08 - So tomorrow is a whole different setup here.

01:12 We've got a huge plain system,

01:14 really the first of the season

01:15 where we're seeing a multitude of hazards,

01:16 not only just severe, but high wind,

01:19 snow, and even flooding like you talked about earlier.

01:21 But with this setup, we're seeing the warm front,

01:23 which is going to be the northern portion

01:25 of that region that's identified on the screen.

01:27 And that's where our storms are going to initiate.

01:30 They're likely going to start off as hailers,

01:32 as we like to call them, so more likely to produce hail.

01:35 And there even could be some wind and tornadoes

01:38 really close to the low.

01:39 So that's why we identified that area of orange.

01:41 A little bit further south,

01:43 that's not gonna happen till later in the evening,

01:45 if it even happens at all.

01:47 The environment's gonna be not as conducive

01:50 as it is in Nebraska,

01:51 as it's going to be in Kansas itself.

01:53 So really looking like Kansas, more like evening storms,

01:56 Nebraska, afternoon and evening.

01:59 And we do have a lot of eyeballs on Kansas City,

02:02 partly 'cause the Chiefs are at home

02:03 when they have a 715 Central kickoff.

02:06 There we have the future radar animation

02:08 for 530 Eastern, 430 Central,

02:11 with storms kicking off into parts of East Central Nebraska,

02:14 maybe near Lincoln, for example.

02:15 But what are some hazards as this continues to move east?

02:19 And also, can you tell us a little bit

02:20 about what your team at AccuWeather,

02:23 Severe Weather Center does when we have people in,

02:26 maybe clients that may pay us for special weather information

02:30 when you have large groups of people gathered?

02:32 Yeah, our clients can call us really at any point

02:36 to ask us about the forecast.

02:38 We're just a phone call away, 24/7, 365.

02:41 So the clients that we have up in Kansas City,

02:44 they're gonna be calling us asking,

02:45 "Hey, what are we looking like

02:46 for the forecast this evening?"

02:47 Or even calling us a couple of hours before

02:49 to see how they can bring in their customers

02:53 into the stadium, even possibly.

02:55 So they're starting to get prepared,

02:57 but during the preparedness itself

02:59 is actually when we get into the warnings.

03:00 So we can't issue those really impact-specific warnings.

03:03 So it's not just a severe thunderstorm warning.

03:05 It is high winds, it is tornadoes, it is hail.

03:09 So that's kind of the service that we could bring

03:11 to our clients in the Kansas City area

03:13 when we see those storms tomorrow night.

03:14 All right, well, we'll be staying on top of this,
